Alan L. Sink
Alan Lloyd Sink, 53, of 2403 Airport Road, Penhook, died Tuesday, April 15, 2003, at his home. Born June 6, 1949, in Guilford County, N.C., he was a son of Peggy Payne Sink of Thomasville, N.C., and the late Lloyd B. Sink. He graduated from N.C. State University with a degree in agricultural engineering and was a licensed surveyor in North Carolina and Virginia. He was employed as a land surveyor with Land Engineering & Design in Danville and also worked for Henry County. He served in the Army National Guard Reserves and was an active member of the Star City Promenaders of Roanoke. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in Thomasville, N.C., and attended Bassett Church of the Brethren. Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Marguerite Mills Sink of the home; one daughter, Alana Sink Shackelford of Anderson, S.C.; a son, Brian Lowell Sink of Thomasville; a stepdaughter, Susan Mills Novelly of Sacramento, Calif.; two stepsons, Marvin Lee Roop of Millcreek, Wash., and Byron Jay Roop of Virginia Beach; one sister, Sherry Sink Bass of Thomasville; one brother, Larry Tyson Sink of Willow Spring, N.C.; two grandsons; a step-granddaughter; and a step-grandson. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at Collins Funeral Chapel in Bassett. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bassett Church of the Brethren with the Rev. Gary Edwards and Dr. Joe D. Coltrane officiating. After the funeral in Bassett, the family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Thomasville, with a graveside service and burial to follow in the church cemetery. Jasper Douglas Fulcher, 78, of McCrystal Circle, Moncks Corner, S.C., and formerly of Martinsville, died Friday, May 30, 2003, at his residence. He was born March 7, 1925, in Spray, N.C. He was the widower of Mary Frances Shaw Fulcher. He was a retired electrician for DuPont. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Rose, of the home; a son, Steven D. Fulcher; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Roselawn Burial Park. Wayne R. Gunter
Wayne R. Gunter, 88, of Maxey Drive, Spencer, and formerly of the Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at RJR Patrick Community Hospital. He was born Nov. 2, 1914, to the late Walter A. and Mattie Coleman Gunter. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Lawson; four brothers and four sisters. He was retired from American Furniture and was a member of Meadow United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Gladys Ashworth Gunter of the home; a daughter, Frances Moss of Spencer; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one step great-grandchild. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Stuart with Pastor Mike Hundley and Rev. Leroy Ashworth officiating. Burial will follow in the Gunter family cemetery. Fannie Ellen Harbour Hubbard, 87, of Lone Ivy Road, Stuart, died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at RJR Patrick Community Hospital. She was born March 11,1916 to the late John W. Harbour and Mary Lou Jefferson Harbour. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four sons; James Hubbard, Marvin Hubbard, Clyde Hubbard, and Earnest Lee Hubbard; six brothers and five sisters. She was a member of Jacks Creek Primitive Baptist Church for more than 60 years. Surviving are her husband of 72 years, Alvery Brockley Hubbard of the home; two daughters, Lou Ella Handy of Woolwine, Delora Barker of Martinsville; a son, Maynard Hubbard of Stuart; 13 grandchildren, one step-grandson; 15 great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and six step great-great-grandchildren. The funeral for Elsie Mae Gilbert Barnes, 84, of 1201 Spruce St., Martinsville, who died July 29, 2003, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home. Ministers David Cuthbertson and Joe Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. A native of Princeton, W.Va., Barnes was born on June 27, 1919, a daughter of the late Maggie Gilbert and John Gilbert. She was the widow of Ezra Hairston Barnes. She had been a member of Horsepasture Christian Church for 30 years and had worked as a private duty nurse. Surviving are three sons, Dennis Lynn Barnes of Hampton, Ezra Hairston Barnes Jr. of Martinsville and Marvin Francis Barnes of Ridgeway; two daughters, Carolyn Rakes of Ridgeway and Lucy Mae Baggarella of Swansonboro, N.C.; two sisters, Vergie White and Pauline Pendleton, both of Colver, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Nancy W. Doyle
Nancy Marshall White Doyle, 93, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at KingÕs Grant Retirement Community in Martinsville, where she was a resident. A native of McDowell County, W.Va., she graduated from business school and retired as a medical technician with DuPont. Her parents were the late Henry Cheatham Marshall and Ada Fulcher Marshall. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, William T. White; her second husband, Orin Doyle; three sisters, Grace M. Stone, Alice M. Merriman and Velma Marshall; and three brothers, James D. Marshall, Percy Marshall and H.C. Marshall Jr. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star of Martinsville and was a member of the Daughters of the Confederacy, Altrusa Club and Business and Professional WomenÕs Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Martinsville and the United Methodist Women. Surviving are three daughters, Ireita W. Cauthen of Norfolk, Mary W. Beal of Colonial Heights and Marie W. Underwood of Ridgeway; one son, William T. White Jr. of LaCrosse; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Ernest L. Hairston
Bishop Ernest L. Hairston, B.T.H., D.D., 87, of Yonkers, N.Y., and formerly of Martinsville, died July 28, 2003, in Yonkers. Born Sept. 3, 1915, in Axton, he was a son of the late Sam Henry Hairston and Cora Lee Hairston. He was a graduate of Kimball High School and served four years in the Army. He graduated from Aenon Bible Institute, Suny Purchase College, New Haven Theological Seminary, receiving a doctorate of theology, and Manhattan Bible Institute. Hairston was pastor of Kings Highway Apostolic Church and was presiding bishop of the United Churches of Jesus Apostolic. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Lucille Hairston, of the home; one daughter, Audrey L. Millner of Yonkers; a son, Eulas Hairston of Yonkers; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Hattie Roach, Martha Franklin and Lucille Kelley, all of New York. A wake will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at Kings Highway Apostolic Church, 36 Kenmore St., Yonkers. A funeral service will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Community Baptist Church, 156 N. Nellie Coffer Jones, 99, of 1491 Jones Ridge Road, Axton, died Wednesday, July 30, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born March 12, 1904, in Eden, N.C., to Joseph W. Coffer and Lilly A. Tilley Coffer, both deceased. Her husband, Oscar Jones, died on Nov. 10, 1977. Also deceased are two sisters, Rosa Pickeral and Nora Coffer; and four brothers, George, David, Jesse and Silas Coffer. She was a member of Carroll Memorial United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. Surviving are three daughters, Virginia Gilley and Margaret Jean Williams, both of Danville, and Geneva Elizabeth Bourn of Birmingham, Ala.; three sons, Marion Jones of Martinsville, Alton Lee Jones of Roanoke and Thomas W. She was born in Seward, Neb., on May 1, 1925, a daughter of the late Fred and Alta Alley Rasmussen. In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raye Layman. She was a member of Fairystone Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara L. Vipperman of Stuart; two sons, Gary D. Layman Sr. of Woolwine and Ronnie R. Lucille Carter Martin, 91, of 810 Stoney Mountain Road, Martinsville, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Martinsville. A native of Madison, N.C., she was born on Feb. 26, 1912, a daughter of the late Lizzie Draper. Also preceding her in death were her husband, David Martin; three brothers, Joe Richard Martin, David Lee Martin and Thomas Martin; and a sister, Josephine Butler. She retired as a housekeeper at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, where she worked for many years. She was a a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church and its usher board. Surviving are two sons, McArthur Martin of Richmond and Jerome Martin of Atlanta; one daughter, Gloria Hightower of Martinsville; 17 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hairston Funeral Home with Elder Shantae Younger presiding. Burial will follow in Carver Memorial Gardens. Kathlyn Gaynell "Gay" Meeks Mitchell, 87, of 527 Harrison St., Martinsville, died Tuesday, July 29, 2003. A native of Spray, N.C., she was born Nov. 18, 1915, a daughter of the late William Morris Meeks and Elizabeth Saunders Meeks. In addition, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Kerr Mitchell Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth M. Martin; and two brothers, John W. and Ted Meeks. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Martinsville; a charter member of Fairlawn Garden Club; and a member of Chatham Heights Home Demonstration Club. Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Ann M. Sutphin of Fairfax, Mary Elizabeth M. Warren of Martinsville and Kathlyn Gaynell M. Foster of Dixfield, Maine; four sons, Robert Kerr Mitchell III of St. Augustine, Fla., William Edward Mitchell and Jack Terrell Mitchell, both of Richmond, and Thomas Franklin Mitchell of Harrisonburg; one sister, Nancy M. ROCKY MOUNT -- The funeral for Thelma Young Smith, 78, of Rocky Mount, who died July 29, 2003, in a Roanoke hospital, will be held at 11 a.m. today at Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ralph Engles Thomasson, 73, of Pensacola, Fla., and formerly of Henry County, died July 27, 2003. He was born in Henry County and graduated from Fieldale High School. Preceding him in death were his father, Robert Lee Thomasson; a brother, Clyde Thomasson; and a son, Ralph Thomasson Jr. Surviving are his mother, Nannie Thomasson of Collinsville; his wife, Shirley Joyce Thomasson of Pensacola; one daughter, Pam Thomasson of Crestview, Fla.; one brother, J.T. Thomasson of Pensacola; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Eastern Gate Funeral Home in Pensacola, with burial to follow in the Pensacola Memorial Gardens. A Virginia native, he was a son of the late William Andrew Ashby and Vera Martin Ashby. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Ashby Draper, and a brother, Cecil William Ashby. He served for two years in Japan with the Air Force, and was formerly employed by the Henry County Sheriff's Office. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Gladys Lorine Lawrence Gordon, 76, of 225 Tenth St., Fieldale, died Nov. 30, 2003, at the Stanleytown Health Care Center. She was born in Martinsville on Nov. 20, 1927, a daughter of Elva Oakes Lawrence of Martinsville, and the late William Stover "Jack" Lawrence. Her husband was the late Carl Eugene Gordon Jr. She worked at the former DuPont plant in Martinsville for 38 years. Surviving are one son, Michael Lawrence Gordon of Fieldale; two sisters, Faye Lawrence Morley of Martinsville and Gloria Lawrence Vaughn of Fieldale; one brother, William Cecil "Bill" Lawrence of Martinsville; and one grandson. Betty Montgomery Johnson, 72, of Claudville, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born in Surry County, N.C., on June 5, 1931. She retired from Bassett-Walker Knitting after 31 years and was a member of Mayo Mountain Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Camden Akers Johnson of the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart; and one son, Cam Johnson of Claudville. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnson family cemetery in Claudville. The Rev. J.R. Shelton will officiate. Moody Funeral Home, Stuart, is in charge of arrangements.

Ann J. Martin
DEWEY, OKLA. - Ann Jarrett Martin, 64, of Dewey, a native of Henry County, Va., died Nov. 27, 2003, in a local hospital. The daughter of the late Herbert Lee Jarrett and Lillie Wells Jarrett, she moved a number of years ago to Oklahoma, where her husband pastored a church. She also was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jarrett, and a brother, Glen M. Jarrett. She graduated from Fieldale High School and was a former member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church in Henry County. Surviving are her husband, the Rev. Leon Martin of the home; one granddaughter; two brothers, Leroy and Bernard Jarrett, both of Leslie, Ga.; and other relatives in Henry County. The funeral and burial was in Dewey. Arnold Moore Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Lewis Minter
The funeral for the Rev. Lewis Minter, 91, of 380 Dick and Willie Ave., Martinsville, who died Nov. 27, 2003, was held Monday at Mount Bethel United Methodist Church on Hodges Farm Road. The Revs. George Gorman and DeRoy Campbell officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Christian Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Alan Thompson, Tommy Mitchell, Kenneth Mitchell, Ed Foley, Allen Weese, Kevin Hendrick and Charlie Bradshaw. Arrangements were by McKee-Stone Funeral Services.

Harold J. Napper
The funeral for Harold J. Napper, 64, of 480 Stockton Road, Martinsville, who died Nov. 26, 2003, was held Monday at Jerusalem Christian Church with the Rev. Eugene Reynolds officiating. Burial was in Carver Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were James Shelton Jr., Ben Gravely, Greg Preston, Richard Harris, Wydale Harris and Nickie Hairston. Hines Funeral Services handled arrangements.

Belma H. Pedigo
Belma Hodges Pedigo, 77, of 300 Blue Ridge St., Martinsville, died Nov. 30, 2003, at the Blue Ridge Rehab Center. Born Nov. 13, 1926, in Pennsylvania, her parents were the late Ella Fern Dennison Hodges and Jasper Eldrie Hodges. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel C. Pedigo; a son, Melvin R. Pedigo; brothers, Virgil, Roy and Eugene Hodges; and a sister, Clara Griffin. She had worked as an inspector for Barnes & Co., and she attended the First Assembly of God. Surviving are two sons, the Rev. Ronald L. Pedigo of Hillsville and Gary W. Pedigo of Matinsville; one brother, Robert Hodges of Illinois; three sisters, Vonnie Fulcher and Juanita Murphy, both of Illinois, and Verna Lee Dennison of Arkansas; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at noon Wednesday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home. The Rev. Ronald L. Pedigo will preside. Burial will follow in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until time for the funeral Wednesday, and at other times at the home of Gary and Connie Pedigo, 149 Sedgefield Drive, Martinsville. Roselawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Fletcher H. Ross
Fletcher H. Ross, 86, formerly of Bassett, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in Buffalo, N.Y. He was the son of the late Harden Ross and Mattie Turner Ross. Surviving are two sisters, Ada Turner and Jennie Smith, both of Bassett; and two brothers, Raymond Ross of Bassett and Letcher Ross of Buffalo. Services will be held in Buffalo. Collins Funeral Services provided the local information.

Patsy L. Cole
Patsy Lynn Cole, 46, of 290 Shadowbox Road, Axton, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 at her home. She was born Feb. 10, 1957 to Norma Jean Nealy Murphy and the late Earley Emerson Murphy. She was a graduate of Averett College with a degree in social work. She worked as a child protective services supervisor for the Henry County-Martinsville Social Services for 24 years before retiring because of a disability. She served as the treasurer for the Task Force of Martinsville and Henry County and was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Eden, N.C. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a stepdaughter, Kimberly Cole, of Gainesville, Fla. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Westover Wrenn Yeatts Funeral Home in Danville. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Eden, N.C., with burial in the Providence Baptist Church cemetery.

Doris W. Holt, 79, of 139 D&W Lane, Patrick Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 at R.J. Reynolds Patrick Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Howell Funeral Home of Stuart.

Christine D. Honeycutt
Christine Donavant Honeycutt, 80, of 39 Blalock Drive, Martinsville, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 at Blue Ridge Rehab Center. Born in Henry County on July 31, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Hobert Hubert Donavant and the late Mary Francis Hodges Donavant. She was a member of Central Baptist Church of Axton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Erma Ray; and a brother, Hubert Donavant. She is survived by her husband, Ray Honeycutt, of the home; a daughter, Alicia Dianne Walker of Cascade; two sons, David Eugene Gunter of Dobson, N.C., and Rodney Alton Gunter of Martinsville; a sister, Linda R. Walker of Hurt; three brothers, James Donavant and Daniel Donavant, both of Martinsville, and Lewis Donavant of Kernersville, N.C.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 3 at the Donavant family cemetery in Martinsville, the Rev. Billy Stegall officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. today at Community Funeral Services chapel and at other times at the home of James Donavant, 387 Woodlawn Dr., Martinsville.

Virginia S. Hutcherson
Virginia May Shupe Hutcherson, 87, of Blue Ridge Rehab Center and formerly of Mineral Street, Martinsville, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. Born June 24, 1916 in Carroll County, she was the daughter of the late John Shupe and the late Mary Gordon Shupe. She was retired from American of Martinsville. She was of the Baptist faith. In additional to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Hutcherson, who died in 2000. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Roselawn Burial Park, pastor Elka Cheshire officiating. The family will receive friends at Norris Funeral Services and Crematory beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Ruth H. Shelton
The funeral for Ruth Hazelwood Shelton, 82, of Martinsville, who died Jan. 28, 2004, was held Sunday at Big A Church of Christ, preacher Don Bailey officiating Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Gary Plaster, Tim Shelton, Chris Shelton, Michael Shelton, Lee Hazelwood, Billy Black, Don Richards.
