Michael Allen Cyrlin, 48, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998 in the University of Virginia Hospital. He was born June 28, 1950 in the Bronx, N.Y., a son of the late Benjamin Cyrlin and Doris Chappell Cyrlin. He was an employee of Ericsson Corp. in Quality Control, was a member of the Bedford Rescue Squad, Trinity Baptist Church and the Faith Redemption Fellowship in Forest. He was preceded in death by a son, Anthony L. Cyrlin. He is survived by his wife, Bonita Cyrlin; three sons, Michael A. Cyrlin Jr., N.J., David B. Cyrlin, Daniel J. Cyrlin both of Bedford; two brothers, Sheldon K. Cyrlin, Somerville, N.J., Gary Cyrlin, Texas; a sister, Rose Sebesky, Easton, Pa.; his stepmother, Gloria Cyrlin, Ore.; a stepsister, Carol Saunders and a stepbrother, Sonny Saunders; an uncle, Herb Cyrlin, N.Y. and one grandchild. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Trinity Baptist Bus Fund or the Faith Redemption Youth Center. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 from the Trinity Baptist Church. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

Mrs. Lorraine Hancock
Mrs. Lorraine Hancock, 63, of 201 Hillside Court, departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Tessie Morgan Richardson. She was the wife of the late Charles J. Hancock. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas J. Richardson and a devoted friend, Norman O. Rucker. She leaves to cherish her memories, three daughters, Mrs. Patricia H. Cox-Gwathmey of Lynchburg, Mrs. Marie H. Lindsay and Mrs. Brenda H. Beverly both of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Bernard S. Hancock and Douglas E. Hancock both of Lynchburg; brother, Jack M. Richardson of Lynchburg; one son-in-law, H. Eugene Gwathmey Jr. of Lynchburg; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Martha H. Brown of Petersburg; 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, a devoted niece, Mrs. Shirley H. Daniel of Appomattox; a devoted friend, Mrs. Carrie A. Robinson of Madison Heights, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 from Mount Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Ford officiating. Interment in Forest Hill Burial Park. Her remains will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. The cortege will assemble at the residence at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Patricia H. Cox-Gwathmey, 4140 Audubon Place, Lynchburg. Odessa W. Hopkins
Odessa W. Hopkins, 92, of Bedford, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 1998 in the Woodhaven Nursing Home. She was born Aug. 29, 1906 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late William J. Woodford and Mollie Cheek Woodford. Her husband was the late John D. Hopkins Sr. She was a retired teacher, having taught in Bedford County Schools for 30 years. She was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John D. and Glynis Hopkins, Bedford, William F. and Dorinda Hopkins, Bedford, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, 1998 from the Longwood Cemetery by the Rev. Joseph Gaston. Friends may call after noon today and the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Bedford Presbyterian Church.

Sarah Ellen Tolbert O’Brien
Sarah Ellen Tolbert O’Brien, 86, of Dillwyn, died Dec. 4, 1998 at her home after a lengthy illness. She was the widow of Berkley N. O’Brien. She is survived by two daughters, Christine O. Burton and her husband, Kenneth of Chesterfield, Ruby O. Simpson and her husband, Jack of Farmville; a son, E.A. (Bill) Talbert and his wife, Helen of Dillwyn; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, Rt. 612 with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn and other times at her residence. Memorial contributions may be made to Chestnut Grove Scholarship Fund.

Patsy Louise Perryman
FABER — Patsy Louise Perryman, 52, of Simpson Lane, Faber, died suddenly Thursday afternoon at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville. Born June 23, 1946 in Charlottesville, she was a daughter of the late Kermit Wilson Mawyer Sr. and Samanthia Stilton Mawyer. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell “Jim” Perryman on May 11, 1995. She was a retired employee of Pizza Hut in Charlottesville and a member of Rockspring United Methodist Church in Faber. Patsy is survived by her children, Larry Perryman of Shipman, Jimmy Perryman and Shelia Frye both of Charlottesville and Rhonda Perryman of Loomis, Calif.; four sisters, Lillian Matheny and Suzanne Powell both of Afton, Carolyn Ragland of Shipman and Pamela Freund of Fredirick, Md.; seven brothers, Kermit Mawyer Jr. of Esmont, John and Russell Mawyer of Keene, George Mawyer of Barboursville, Aller Mawyer of Afton and David and Eddie Mawyer both of Charlottesville; six grandchildren, Amanda, Larry Jr., Darrell, Brandon, Patrick and Bryan and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with the Rev. John Chaffee officiating with interment in the Hebron Cemetery in Afton. David Morris Pfeifer
David Morris Pfeifer, 58, of 202 Somerset Place, Rustburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Sandra Hyde Pfeifer for 35 years. Mr. Pfeifer was born January 20, 1940 in Paragould, Ark. to the late Leonard Pfeifer and the late Florence Higgins Pfeifer. Mr. Pfeifer was a Mason and a member of Rustburg Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and Sunday School teacher and active on several church committees. He retired from INS Border Patrol. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Kimberly Tyree and her husband, Stuart of Rustburg; his son, Kevin D. Pfeifer of Easton, Md.; a brother, Lawrence E. Pfeifer of Lowell, Ark.; a grandson, Casey Tyree and a granddaughter, Katie Tyree. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Rustburg Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Cole and the Rev. Roger Roller officiating. Interment will follow in the Rustburg Cemetery with Masonic Rites. Gerda Vestal
Gerda Vestal, 84, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998 at her residence. She was the widow of Bland A. Vestal to whom she was married for 63 years. Mrs. Vestal was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Paur. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Sept. 23, 1914, she was a member of Beulah Baptist Church where she was active in the choir, Silver Threads and Bells. She was active in Thomas Road Baptist Church’s Senior Saints. She was a former member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Virginia Beach and New Hope Baptist Church in Lowry. She is the much loved mother of five children and their spouses, Joseph B. Vestal and his wife, Donna of Crystal Lake, Ill., Paul D. Vestal and his wife, Jeanie of Chesapeake, Jeanne V. Hellstrom and her husband, Carl of Virginia Beach, Linda V. Spruill and her husband, William of Chesapeake and Valerie V. Graham and her husband, Granville Y. of Lynchburg, she is also dearly loved by 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, 1998 at Beulah Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Maurice T. McCarthy Jr. and the Rev. Ron Pegram officiating. Calvin McWade Campbell
Calvin McWade Campbell, 60, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at his home in Lowesville. Born in Amherst County December 11, 1937, he was a son of Mamie Cash Campbell and the late Willard Hampton Campbell. Mr. Campbell was a member of the Piney River Baptist Church, a United States Army veteran and was a heavy equipment operator for Dominion Stone Co. In addition to his mother, survivors include five brothers, Willie L. Campbell and Lanice of Hampton, Donald D. Campbell and Sandra of Guntersville, Ala., Carroll P. Campbell and Janie, Wayne and Ann Campbell, Willard H. Campbell Jr. and Harley, all of Lowesville; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Randall McWade Campbell. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998 at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home by Rev. A. Eugene Beverly and Rev. John Ragland. Interment with military honors by VFW Post 7701 and American Legion Post 17 will follow in Amherst Cemetery. Herbert Hugo Fetherolf
Herbert Hugo Fetherolf Jr. of Roanoke, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 at his residence. Born April 2, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Herbert Hugo Fetherolf Sr. and Elizabeth Congrove Lucas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was known for his loving and giving personality; always providing for others first and placing himself last. In addition to his wife, Patricia Bryant Fetherolf, he is survived by three sons, Herbert Hugo Fetherolf III of Calif., John Arthur Fetherolf of Ohio, Steven Ray Fetherolf and wife, Cynthia of N.C.; five daughters, Faith Christina Fetherolf of Tenn., Hope Elizabeth Christmon and husband, Will of Tenn., Charity Suzanne Fetherolf, Melissa Fetherolf, Jennifer Elaine Fetherolf all of Roanoke; one sister, Karen Karr-Bartley of Ohio; one brother, Terry Hall of Ohio; mother and father-in-law, Joan and Herbert Bryant of Madison Heights; six grandchildren, Christopher Fetherolf, Ryan Swindell, Xavier Christmon, Kobe Christmon, Crystal and Stacy Fetherolf. Carl Michael “Freight Liner” Layne, 50, of Gladys, passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998 in the Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born Nov. 29, 1948 in Bedford County, a son of the late John Henry Layne and Gracie Harriet Witt Layne. He was an employee of Thompson Trucking, Concord, a member of the Altavista Moose Lodge and was a member of the Evington Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gracie Ann Layne; two brothers, Henry DuVal Layne, Andrew Felix Layne. He is survived by his wife, Janice Beverly Layne; two daughters, Ida Mae Rosser, Virginia L. Hardwick all of Altavista; two stepsons, Allen Doyle Parrish, Harrisonburg, George Franklin Dalton Jr., Lynchburg; three stepdaughters, Janet Lynne Tolliver, LaShawn Kaye Dalton both of Frederick, Md., Melody Rose Pool, Brookneal; two sisters, Joyce L. William Alvin Massie
William Alvin Massie, 77, of Big Island, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in Nelson County, Feb. 7, 1921, the son of the late Hunter Talmadge Massie and Bessie Ethel Campbell Massie. He was an Army veteran serving during World War II. He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, a choir member and Sunday School Director for over 20 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, H.T. Massie and a sister, Dorothy M. Peters. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Christine Manley Massie; a daughter, Nadine Massie of Goode; three brothers, Byron B. Massie and Radford M. Massie both of Big Island and George F. Massie of Amherst; a grandson, Corp. Jason Whisenhunt of Camp Lejeuene, N.C. and a granddaughter, Shelly Nicole Whisenhunt of San Diego, N.M. and many nieces and nephews. PAMPLIN — Hubert Larry Mays Sr., died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Hazel Woodby Mays. Born in Appomattox County, Aug. 6, 1925, he was a son of the late Elmer Dillard Mays and Lelia Webber Mays. He was an Army veteran of WWII and Korea, a retired independent dealer with Jewel Home Shopping Service and a member of American Legion Post #104. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Berta Johnson, Alice Mays Adams both of Lynchburg, Larry Mays and his wife, Debbie of Goode, Pat Davis and her husband, Billie of St. Pauls, N.C., James Patrick Mays of Lynchburg; two brothers, Thomas Andrew Mays and his wife, Ann of Keysville and Beverley Dillard Mays of Lynchburg; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, a brother-in-law, Aubrey Townsend; a sister-in-law, Billie Mae Massie and her husband, Tommie, four nephews and two nieces. Edna Irene Turner Newman, 75, of Forest, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the widow of Russell Edgar Newman. Born in Bassett, Aug. 9, 1923, she was a daughter of the late George G. and Maggie Mayo Elliott Turner. She was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church which she loved, a choir member, a member of Timbrook Senior Citizens group and Gladys Senior Citizens Group. Mrs. Newman is survived by six children, Patricia Newman Vinson of Williamsburg, Barbara N. Holloran and her husband, James (Pete) of Forest, Russell Eddie Newman and his wife, Joan of Lynchburg, Gail N. Neal and her husband, Joe of Forest, Samuel T. Newman and his wife, Judy of Lynchburg, Vanessa Lyn N. Dalton and her husband, Ricky of Charlotte; two sisters, Ellis T. Jackson of Martinsville and Bessie Turner Epperly of Summerfield, N.C.; one brother, Clyde J. Turner of Danville, 13 grandchildren, one step-grandchild and three great-grandchildren. Kathryne L. Smith, 92, a native of Lynchburg, died in Virginia Beach December 3, 1998. Mrs. Smith, formerly of Nalcrest, Fla., had lived in Virginia Beach for the past five years. She is survived by her son, C. William Smith Jr. and his wife, Catherine of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Michael William Smith of Willis and Cynthia Smith Hart of Virginia Beach; and two great-grandsons, Raymond James and William Russell Hart. Mrs. Dorothy Aurelia Coles Smith departed this life at her residence, Dec. 1, 1998 after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Kemper Myles Smith and four sons, Pierce, James Brandy Sr., Mitchell, Captain Smith. She leaves to cherish her memories two sons, Satchell Smith of Amherst and Kemper M. Smith Jr. of Washington, D.C.; one devoted grandson, Brandy Smith Jr.; two granddaughters, Marquita Smith of Amherst, Rai Smith of Washington, D.C.; one goddaughter, Denise Carter of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Deacon Massie Coles of Amherst; three devoted sisters-in-law, Margarett Coles of Amherst, Velma Turner and Shirley Napper of Washington, D.C.; a devoted friend, Helen Gibson; two devoted nieces, Juanita Turner and Joyce Irving of Amherst and one devoted nephew, Cramon Smith of Amherst. Her remains rest at Winfree-Wright Funeral Service Inc., 162 Depot Street until 6:15 p.m. Friday afterwhich her remains will lie in state from 7-8 p.m. at New Jerusalem Baptist Church for the family and friends visitation. A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at New Jerusalem Baptist Church with the Rev. J.L. Sandidge officiating and the Rev. Margaret Nelson assisting. Lt. Milton George Tsoleas Jr.
Lt. Milton George Tsoleas Jr., 44, of Midlothian, died Dec. 2, 1998. He was preceded in death by his father, Milton George Tsoleas Sr. He is survived by his wife, Debbie; two children, Christina and Zachary and a stepdaughter, Brooke; his mother, Mary Lou Tsoleas and a brother, Ted Tsoleas. Mr. Tsoleas was a Virginia State Trooper for 20 years and a member of Mt. Pisgah United Methodist Church. Mr. Tsoleas received his bachelors degree in Criminal Justice in 1977 from East Tennessee State University. He was on his way to complete his masters program and was a Dean Scholar at Southern Police Institute for the 95 Administratives course. His remains rest at Bliley Funeral Home’s Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mount Pisgah United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery, Bedford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Virginia State Police Association Scholarship Fund.

Ethel Farmer Wooldridge
Ethel Farmer Wooldridge, 85, formerly of Hurt, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in Maplewood Home for the Elderly. She was the wife of the late William Robert Wooldridge. Born May 19, 1913, in Bedford County, she was the daughter of the late William Thomas and Elsie West Farmer. She was a member of Hurt United Methodist Church. She is survived by one son: Billy Wooldridge and his wife, Maxine, of Hurt; one daughter, Betty W. Morris and her husband, Johnnie, of Jetersville; two sisters, Clara F. Shields and Ora F. Goad, both of Hurt; seven grandchildren, Tammy Wooldridge, Tim Wooldridge, Kent Emerson, Mark Emerson, John D. Morris, Kelly Morris and Kristy Bowman and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond O. Farmer and William Thomas Farmer. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998, in Hurt United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Schooler and the Rev. George Knight. Burial will follow in Altavista Memorial Park. Margaret Ann Wirt Bragg
Margaret Ann Wirt Bragg, our loving and loved wife and mother, went gently into her Savior’s arms on Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was a very active member of Appomattox Courthouse Presbyterian Church. She served in many capacities, with special attention to the “Stitch and Chatter” group. She fulfilled a long time dream by taking painting classes for the last few years. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Coach Gordon Bragg; three daughters and their husbands, Margaret and John Swisher, Kathy and Roger Graybill and Patty and Sam Branch; three grandchildren, J.R. Swisher and his wife, Karla, Jolee Swisher and Gordon Smith and one great-grandchild, Scott Swisher. Hubert Beverly Cardwell
Hubert Beverly Cardwell, 75, of Concord, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the son of the late Neal Dixon Cardwell and Sally Drinkard Cardwell. Born Jan. 21, 1923 in Concord, Mr. Cardwell was a retired Tobacco Grader for the United States Government and a farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII with several medals including a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, a member of the American Legion and Indian Hill Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Thelma C. DeJarnette, Okla C. Caldwell and Ella C. Becque and one brother, George Cardwell. He is survived by one brother, Palmer N. Cardwell and his wife, Rena of Forest and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Dr. James D. Newman. Arnitha’ F. Cayton
Arnitha’ F. Cayton of Lynchburg, went home to be with the Lord as a result of a car accident on Dec. 1, 1998. Born May 25, 1967 in Fort Myers, Fla. to Mrs. Minnie Butter. She was the wife of the late Rev. Timothy L. Cayton Sr. She was a faithful member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son, Timothy Jr.; one daughter, Adreono Faris; a sister, Amelia Forrest of Naples, Fla.; two brothers and a sister, William, Willie and Roxanne Butler of Immokalee, Fla.; a foster brother, Charles Gardener; two foster sisters and four foster brothers, Valerie, Cynthia, Hiram, Nicholas, Howard, Tony Allen of Immokalee; her foster parents, Rev. Mary Cather Girling
Mary Cather Girling, 86, of Speed the Plough Orchard, Elon, died Nov. 28, 1998 at Drinkard Health Care Center. She was born in Castlefin, Donegal, Ireland, March 18, 1912, a daughter of the late Archie Cathers and Rebecca Joe Cathers. She and her family immigrated to British Columbia, Canada, where she met her future husband, Philip Girling. They were married in 1938 in Buffalo, N.Y. while on their way to manage the fruit orchard in Elon owned by Mr. Girling’s uncle, Roland Lea. Mr. and Mrs. Girling inherited the orchard and operated it into the 1990’s. Philip Girling died in 1994, and a daughter, Diane Girling Mantell, died in 1986. Mrs. Girling is survived by her son, Rowland Lea Girling; three grandchildren, Edward Girling and Diane Girling both of Lynchburg, Dr. Philip Girling and his wife, Dr. Mary Girling of Richmond; two sisters, Mrs. Jack Mannering of Vancouver, BC, Canada and Mrs. Arthur Reid of Nelson, BC, Canada. Mrs. Girling was for many years a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and the Hillside Garden Club. Her hospitality to the weekly Sunday afternoon tennis group at Speed the Plough was legendary. She was a woman of rare courage and generosity. The lives of her many friends will be a little darker without the light of her ready smile. William Alvin Massie, 77, of Big Island, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Paul Frederick Jenkins Sr.
Paul Frederick Jenkins Sr., 65, of 5953 Hines Circle, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998 at his home. He was the husband of Jean Svec Jenkins. Born Sept. 2, 1933 in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Fred William and Charlotte Heston Jenkins. He was a retired customer service manager with Alcatel Systems Inc. for 17 years and a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict. In addition to his wife, Mr. Jenkins is survived by three sons, Paul F. Jenkins Jr. and Susan Glass of Lynchburg, R. Michael Jenkins and his wife, Heidi of Rock Hill, S.C., E. Glenn Jenkins and his wife, Susan of Forest; two daughters, Elizabeth M. Jenkins and her husband, William Gordon and Laura L. Jenkins all of Lynchburg and six grandchildren, Katie and Christopher Jenkins of Rock Hill, S.C., Donald Scott Gordon, Michael Scott Gordon and Mary E. Gordon all of Lynchburg and Grayson Jenkins of Forest. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Gary L. Vernon. Delmar D. “Whitey” King Jr., 67, of Salem, passed away Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998. Mr. King was retired from General Electric in Salem after 36 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Alice Smith King; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard A. and Susan King, Roanoke; mother, Beulah T. King, Salem; brothers, Bobby King, Ashville, N.C., Freddie King, Bristol, Jimmy King, Muncie, Ind.; sisters, Charlotte Karnes, Bedford, Lois Prilliman; granddaughters, Amber and Rachel King, also surviving are several nieces and nephews. George Ernest Lowry died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998 at his residence in Bedford. Born to the late James and Nancy E. Lowry, Dec. 11, 1954 in Bedford County. He was preceded in death by one son, Kristopher George Willis of Roanoke. He is survived by two sons, Korey Willis and George E. Lowry Jr. of Roanoke; one daughter, Shameka Nicole Lowry of Roanoke; five brothers, Jerald W. Lowry, Gary M. Lowry and Charles N. Lowry all of Bedford, James Lowry Jr. of Raleigh, N.C. and Harry V. Lowry of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Dorethia Hurt and Pearl LyVern Robertson both of Bedford; two sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, four aunts, four uncles, one niece and a host of nephews, cousins and friends. Linda L. McGrory
Linda L. McGrory, 49, died Friday morning, Nov. 27, 1998 at her residence in Shipman. She was born in Norfolk, Feb. 13, 1949 and moved to Nelson County in June of 1984. Linda was very active in civic affairs and a familiar figure at the County Courthouse Meetings. She was the daughter of Edmund A. and Marie W. Caminati of Chesapeake. Besides her parents, she is survived by and greatly missed by her husband, Joseph P. McGrory; her son, Michael S. Johnson; her sister and brother-in-law, Marian and Ted Dixon of Shipman and her niece, Virginia “Jenny” Platt of North Wales, Pa.; her four stepchildren, Susan S. Turbit and Shannon E. McGrory of Havertown, Pa., Kimberly Butler of Villanova, Pa. and Matthew S. McGrory of Wayne, Pa.. Linda will also be missed by her neighbors and her special friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 1998 at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Home in Lovingston. Friends will be received after the service. Her family would like to thank the University of Virginia Cancer Institute and the Hospice of the Piedmont for the love and care they provided. APPOMATTOX — Lucy M. Patteson, 64, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Thomas Carroll Patteson. Born in Appomattox County, March 13, 1934, she was a daughter of the late William Edell Martin and Irene Cyrus Martin. She was a member of Spout Spring Baptist Church and a homemaker. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie P. and William Coles of Lynchburg, Sherry P. and Terrell McCoy and Penny P. and Roger Dale Franklin all of Appomattox; two sisters, Peggy Wright of Madison Heights and Alice Johnson of N.C.; a brother, Richard H. Martin of Appomattox, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah B. Coles. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998 at Robinson Funeral Home with burial following in the Patteson Family Cemetery. Ralph Rudolph Skinnell, 70, of 730 Leesville Road, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Richmond. Born in Lynchburg, he was a son of Hessie Craig Skinnell of Lynchburg and the late Floyd Fulton Skinnell. Mr. Skinnell was an Army veteran of WWII, a former employee of H.K. Porter Co., a member of the American Legion Post #16 and a member of Southview United Methodist Church. In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Carolyn S. Holofchak and Rebecca S. Harvey both of Forest; a sister, Ruth S. Callahan of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Matthew C. Holofchak and Kendra L. Harvey. Frances Lucille Rea Cobbs, 84, formerly of Nelson County, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998 at Mt. Vernon Hospital in Alexandria. Born in Nelson County March 17, 1914, she was a daughter of the late John Andrew Rea and Elizabeth McClure Rea. Survivors include her husband of sixty-one years, Carl Morrison Cobbs, a son, Carl Berkley Cobbs of Alexandria; two brothers, John Rea of Earlysville, and Woodrow Rea and wife Barbara of Charlottesville; two sisters: Pearl Swisser of Crozet and Effie Wells of Charlottesville; one granddaughter, Kelly Kaylor of Georgia; and two great-grandchildren. Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in Amherst Cemetery by the Rev. A. Eugene Beverly. Kathleen Hanks Creed
Kathleen Hanks Creed, 82, formerly of 803 Perrymont Avenue., died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998 at Guggenheimer Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Edward Howard Creed. Born in Mt. Airy, NC, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Martha Adams Hanks. Mrs. Creed was a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church, where she attended the Eleanor Watson Sunday School class. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson: Robert James “Bob” Creed. She is survived by a son: Jim Creed and his wife Billie, of Lynchburg; two daughters: Nancy Booth and her husband Richard, of Erwin, Tenn., and Dianne Burnett and her Husband Don, of Danville; three sisters: Frances Tilley and Irene Orrell, of Winston Salem, N.C. and Martha Ravenhorst, of Portland, Ore. five grandchildren: Gary W. Creed, Brian D. Booth, Bradley A. Burnett, Wendy C. Moss and Thomas A. Booth and four great-grandsons. A graveside service will be conducted at noon Tuesday at Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Ollie Mae Mann Daniel
Ollie Mae Mann Daniel died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Daniel. Mrs. Daniel was born in Rustburg, Aug. 31, 1909 the daughter of William Mann and Willie Waddell Mann. She was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church. She was a retired supervisor for Craddock-Terry Corp. She is survived by a daughter, Arlene D. Bailey and her husband Calvin of Rustburg, one sister, Edna Mann Kerr of Victoria, and one brother C. Harmon Mann of Rustburg; three grandchildren, Bonnie Gunter and her husband Charlie of Concord, Brad Bailey and his wife Wanda of Lynchburg, and Stacey Kearney and her husband Kevin of Annandale, and six great-grandchildren, Jennifer Jennings, Chad Gunter, Ace Bailey, Wynn Bailey, Kelli Brown and Ben Brown. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Mann and Harry Mann, and one sister, Dorothy Owen. Arthur Warren Kiser
Arthur Warren Kiser, 76, of 3131 Maryland Ave. died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998 at his residence. He was the husband of Ruby M. Kiser. Born in Wise County, Feb. 6, 1922, he was a son of the late Otis and Eva Kiser. Mr. Kiser retired from CVTC after over 20 years of service. In addition to his wife he is survived by one daughter, Patricia K. Harris and her husband Robert; four grandchildren, Jennifer Goff and her husband Robert, Brandi Robinson and her former husband Steve Johnson, and Jason and Travis Harris; and three great-grandchildren Darren, Trooper, and Jordan (Wally), all of Lynchburg; one sister June Vencil; a special uncle Noah Kiser and a special nephew, Randy Kiser and his family. Kayla Janae Stewart
Kayla Janae Stewart claimed her place with the angels on Nov. 29, 1998. She was here on earth for eight months and seven days. She leaves two loving parents, Arthur R. Stewart and Denice Ferguson Stewart of Evington; two devoted sisters, Britney and Nicole Stewart of the home, two wonderful brothers, Jason Ferguson of the home and Michael Carter of Lynchburg; her paternal grandmother, Shirley Watkins and step-grandfather, Abraham Watkins of Amherst, her paternal grandfather, Arthur H. Stewart of Arlington; her maternal grandfather, Boyd Ferguson, Sr. of Concord. Kayla was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Freddie Dorothy Ferguson. She leaves five aunts and six uncles, a devoted great uncle and aunt, Richard and Phyllis Stewart of Charlottesville; and a host of relatives and friends. Earl Jarvis Tweedy, Jr.
Earl Jarvis Tweedy, Jr. went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998 at the age of 45. Born in Campbell County he was the son of Ernestine Haskins Tweedy of Rustburg, and the late Earl Jarvis Tweedy, Sr. He is survived by his wife, Gloria H. Tweedy and two sons, Earl Jarvis Tweedy, III and Jerry Ernest Tweedy, and one daughter, Eraina Tweedy, all of Lynchburg; three brothers, Michael Tweedy of Hepzibah, Ga.; Steven Tweedy and wife Cil, of Rustburg; Kenneth Tweedy and wife Ramona, of Richmond, and three sisters Janice Holland and husband Robert, of Rustburg; April Allbritton and husband Stanley, of Virginia Beach; and Robin Ferguson and husband Courtney of Waldorf, Md.; his grandmother, Hattie Haskins of Rustburg; and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Edward C. Burley of 1012 16th Street, departed this life Friday night in Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late Edward and Phyllis Snead Burley. He is survived by a brother, James Burley of Macon, Ga.; five sisters, Mattie Watson of Ashville, N.C., Mary Robinson, Phyllis Martin Vanesse Turpin all of Lynchburg and Evelyn Jackson of Newark, N.J. and other relatives and friends. Cary Leonard Campbell
Cary L. Campbell, a long time patient at the Salem VA Medical Center, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, November 26, 1998. Born in Amherst County, on May 17, 1900, Rev. Campbell was a son of the late Raymond G. Campbell and Cora Gillispie Campbell. He was retired from Lynchburg Transit Company. He was a Word War One Veteran, having served with the 116th. Inf-29th Div. in France. He was wounded twice while in combat. He was an Ordained Minister of the Gospel in The Free Will Baptist Church, also a longtime member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Bedford. Rev. Campbell was a faithful laborer with the Salvation Army in Lynchburg for many years. Rev. Campbell is survived by one son, Robert L. Campbell; three daughters, Cora Griffee of Rifle Colo., Rebecca Cole of Nebraska City, Neb., Ruby Lowe of Evansville, Ind. and a great number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Bill Steele. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Frances Ann Dance
Frances Ann Dance, 68, of 4930 Tyreeanna Road, died Nov. 27, 1998 at Avante` at Lynchburg. She was the daughter of Frank Pendleton Dance and Theresa Loretta Harvey Dance. She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank Pendleton Dance Jr. who died in WWII. She is survived by a brother, William Kirkwood Dance and his wife, Janet Duke Dance and their children and grandchildren. Frances was retired from Crestar Bank. She was a life time member and former treasurer of Tyreeanna United Methodist Church and a member of the Fairview Rebekah Lodge #52 where she was a past noble grand. Born November 3, 1934, in Campbell County he was a son of the late Berkley Chambers and Nannie Worley Lewis. He was a retired employee of Ericsson, Inc. in Lynchburg. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Morris V. (Sammy) Lewis, Jr. and his wife Jean of Lancaster, Pa. and Christopher K. Roark of Lynchburg; one daughter, Sally L. Aughey and her husband Sam of Evington; three brothers, Meredith J. Lewis and his wife Dorothy of Altavista, Roger D. Lewis and his wife Sandi of Forest and Clyde B. Lewis and his wife Barbara of Colorado Spring, Colo.; one sister, Joyce L. Nelson and her husband Jim of Morgan City, La.; five grandchildren, B. Clay Lewis, Sonny Ashby, Curtis C. Clyde Thomas McCormick
Clyde Thomas McCormick, 64, of Lynchburg died Friday, Nov. 27, 1998. He was born June 10, 1934, in Lynchburg, the son of the late Dewey McCormick and Rose Clark McCormick. Mr. McCormick was a retired carpenter and an Army veteran. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He was preceded in death by one sister, Roszell McCormick. He is survived by one daughter, Linda Abbott of Bedford; two grandsons, David Richards and Tommy Coleman; one great grandson, Nicholas Richards; one brother, Roy McCormick of Lynchburg; one niece, Marie Manley and a dear friend, Laura Fitzgerald. Private memorial services will be held at a later date. Whitten Park Avenue Chapel in charge of arrangements.

William Francis Quinn
William Francis Quinn, 76, of Amherst, died Thursday at Guggenheimer Nursing Home following a long illness. He was the husband of Margaret Cyrus Quinn. Born in Gladstone, Oct. 6, 1922, he was the son of John Leo Quinn and Nellie Tyler Quinn. A retired employee of CSX Transportation, he was a member of Amherst Baptist Church and for more than 50 years, a member of John Ancell Masonic Lodge 255, AF & AM. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Macrina of Whitehall, Pa. and Jayne Freakley of Lynchburg; one son, W.F. Quinn Jr. of Amherst; a brother, John Leo Quinn Jr. of Appomattox; a sister, Mrs. Herman Stowe of Elon; three grandsons, Chris Farrar of Allentown, Pa. and Todd Farrar and Jonathan Farrar of Lynchburg and a great-grandson, Griffin Connor Farrar of Allentown. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Robert Edwards. Interment will be in Briarwood Memorial Gardens. A Masonic Evening Service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home followed by the family receiving friends.

Marguerite T. Wallace, 84, passed away at Home Sweet Home in Madison Heights. She was the widow of William A. Wallace. Born in Lynchburg, Jan. 27, 1914, she was a daughter of the late Jack Lee and Mary Poole Thompson. She was a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church. Mrs. Wallace was preceded in death by four brothers; C.T. Thompson, Russell Alvin Thompson, Alfred P. Thompson, and Richard G. Thompson and one sister Elnora Thompson Tuck. She is survived by three sons; William A. Wallace and his wife Edna, of Miami, Charles Erle Wallace of Orlando, and Dr. Donald M. Wallace and his wife Shelby of Lynchburg; three brothers and their wives, Erle and Dana Thompson, Lawrence and Doris Thompson, and Jimmy and Peggy Thompson, all of Lynchburg; three sisters Ancy Roark and her husband Ray of Lynchburg, Shirley Vassold and her husband Alton, of Danville, and Nancy Taylor, of Stafford; five grandchildren Kimberly Anne Wallace, Bryan Michael Wallace, both of Christiansburg, Frank Wallace, of Burk, Jessica Wallace of Los Angeles, and McGuire Wallace of Orlando.
