Johnnie Henry Bennett Sr., 79, of 18833 U.S. Highway 29 North, Chatham, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998 at Danville Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Louise Spencer Bennett. He was born Nov. 15, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late Bruce Coleman Bennett and Pauline Jacobs Bennett. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Sheva Church of Christ. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Johnnie H. Bennett Jr. and Aubrey M. Bennett, both of Chatham; one daughter, Carolyn B. Toney, and two granddaughters, Natalie Toney and Allison Toney, all of Gretna. A funeral service will be held a 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at Scott Funeral Home Chapel by ministers Mike Stephenson and Frank Fuller. Burial will be held in the Sheva Church of Christ Cemetery, Pittsylvania County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Scott Funeral Home and at other times at the residence.

James Edward Carr
James Edward Carr, 77, of Rustburg, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Beulah Hall Carr. He was born July 7, 1921, in Halifax County, the son of the late Jim Carr and Madie West Carr Foster. He retired from Lawhorne Brothers and attended Fairview Christian Church. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Alvis Mason Carr, Jr. and a number of brothers and sisters. He is survived by two sons, James Earl Carr of Lynchburg and Alvis Mason Carr and his wife, Brenda of Long Island; one daughter, Alice Marie Clerval and her husband, Dennis of Evington; two brothers, Warren Eugene Carr of Lynchburg and Franklin “Buck” Carr of Forest; two sisters, Lillie Mae Cox of Rustburg and Erlene Puckett of Lynchburg; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Fort Hill Memorial Park by the Rev. Nathan Green. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel.

John Dudley Elder
BROOKNEAL - John Dudley Elder, 81, of Route 1, died Thursday morning, Dec. 24, 1998, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home. He was the husband of Josephine H. Elder. He was born in Campbell County, April 24, 1917, son of the late John D. Elder Sr. and Uta Marshall Elder. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, an Army veteran of World War II, and was retired from the U. S. Air Force. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one stepdaughter, Dorothy H. Marstin of Brookneal; one brother, Willie H. Elder of Portsmouth; two sisters, Arlene E. Tasker of Woodstock, Ga., Ruby E. Mason of Arlington; four step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Samuel Elder; three sisters, Gracie E. Breedlove, Erma E. Elder and Lucy E. Daniel. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998 at Beulah Baptist Church by the Rev. Shelby Royal and the Rev. Joey Anthony with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Buddy Ray Fuller
Buddy Ray Fuller, 44 of 6028 New London Road, Forest, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Susan Campbell Fuller. Buddy was born November 11, 1954 in Lynchburg, the son of Robert N. Fuller and Doris Brooks Fuller. He was an employee of Wynns Precision and attended Coolwell Presbyterian Church. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one son, Troy Lee Fuller of Forest, one brother, Bobby Lee Fuller of Lynchburg; two sisters, Linda Smith of Evington and Dodie Fuller of Lynchburg; and his paternal grandmother, Pearl Pearson of Connecticut. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Charles Sutton. Interment will be in Virginia Memorial Park. APPOMATTOX _ Annie Frances Thompson Garrett, 89 of Church St., died Friday morning, Dec. 25, 1998 at Camelot Hall Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Lewis Walker Garrett. Born in Appomattox County, June 21, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Emma McFadden Thompson. She was a retired employee of Appomattox Garment Co. and a member of Liberty Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Dorothy G. Carter of Appomattox; two sons, Lewis C. Garrett of Prince George and John R. Garrett of Lynchburg; one brother, Clifford Thompson of Chesapeake; a grandson, Luke Paulette of Appomattox; two step-granddaughters, Donna Foster and Sharon Tucker, both of Lynchburg and one great-granddaughter, Cindy Paulette. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Lewis C. Garrett with burial in Liberty Cemetery. Louise Boswell Harris
Louise Boswell Harris, 86, of 128 Summit Road, Danville, died Dec. 25, 1998, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home, after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. George A. Harris who died April 1, 1983. She was born Jan. 9, 1912 in Burkville, a daughter of the late John F. Boswell and Una Payseur Boswell. Mrs. Harris lived most of her life in Burkville and Charlotte Court House area and in 1986 moved to Danville. Prior to her retirement, she worked as an associate professor of the campus school at Longwood College. She had acquired a masters degree in education and worked with WMU camps as a director for a number of years and was an active member of Woodberry Hills Baptist Church and was a member of the Love Circle and The True Seekers Sunday School Class. She is survived by two sons, George F. Harris and the Rev. Lewis P. Harris Sr., and a loving daughter-in-law, Peggy Harris, all of Danville; a sister-in-law, Mickie Boswell of Crewe; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was the last survivor of her immediate family. A funeral service will be conducted by the Rev. Alden Hicks at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27 at Woodberry Hills Baptist Church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the cemetery in Charlotte Court House. The family will receive friends at the residence. Frances Smith Jamerson, 96, of Bedford died Wednesday, December 23, 1998. She was born in Washington County, Md., on November 6, 1902, daughter of the late Mahlon Carlton Smith and Fannie Kitzmiller Smith. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Roland W. “Pete” Jamerson; and her son, Roland Walton Jamerson, Jr. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth J. and James W. Brunson of Lynchburg, and Nancy J. and Ed Dangler of Kailua, Hawaii; a daughter-in-law, Mary H. Jamerson of Williamsburg; a brother, Elmer C. Smith of Bedford; eight grandchildren, Beth Brunson, Lea Brunson, Will Brunson, Nan Carmack, Jean Dangler, Mark Dangler, Keith Jamerson, and Susan Frontain; also twelve great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Monday, December 28, 1998, at Main Street United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. D. Glen Langston and the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass, Jr. officiating. Hunter and the late Ruby Williams Hunter Jones. She was a member of College Hill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Judy Levine and three brothers, Fred G. Hunter, David L. Hunter and Ted A. Hunter Jr. She is survived by one son, Jimmy Whitcomb of West Virginia; one daughter, Ruby Fishoff of Lynchburg; one brother, Arthur Hunter of Amherst; and six grandchildren. Horace Andrew Bragg, 79, of 3201 Rose Mill Road, Arrington, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at his home. Born August 16, 1919 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late Lewis Andrew Bragg and Eula Bailey Bragg. He worked as a chemist at American Cyanamid for thirty years and as a teacher for Nelson County Public Schools for twelve years. He was a 1940 graduate of Lynchburg College and a World War II U.S. Army Veteran. He was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church and Fleetwood-Harmony Masonic Lodge No. 92. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Marion Wright Bragg; two sons, William Clarence Bragg, and Lewis Andrew Bragg and his wife, Sharon Showalter, of Charlottesville; a daughter, Jean B. Ballard and her husband, William Ballard, Jr., of Aylett; four grandchildren, Justin William, Aaron Andrew, Mari Elizabeth, and Blake Ballard; a sister, Beverly B. Nichols of Forest; a brother, M. Arnold Bragg and his wife, Lois, of Huddleston; a sister-in-law, Mildred Bragg; and a beloved aunt, Alma B. Stinnett. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen B. Pollard and Audrey B. Harold Burkley Burnett, 66, of Huddleston, died Wednesday, December 23, 1998 at his residence. He was the husband of Margaret Hash Burnett. Born in Bedford County, November 13, 1932, he was a son of the late Jake Burnett and the late Isabell Cofer Burnett. He was a retired self-employed truck driver. He was preceded in death by one brother, Albert Burnett. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Harold Douglas Burnett of Huddleston, and William Kirk Burnett of Lynchburg; two daughters, Linda Gail Wood of Evington, and Virginia Leigh Brewer of Huddleston; two sisters, Francis O’Masta of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Cornelia Lindsey of Forest; eleven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery by Rev. Patrick J. Simon. Mary Luella McDowell DeMuth, 78, of Phenix, died Wednesday, December 23, 1998. She was the only child of the late James Carl and Anna Kate Feaster McDowell. She is survived by her husband, Rev. Philip E. DeMuth; seven sons, Douglas E. and wife, Carolyn, Curtis L., Roger D. and wife Jean, James P. and wife Bonnie, Richard G., Robert A. and wife Delores, Ronald C.; one daughter, Sharon D. Harris and husband, R.L., 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Linda Jean. Funeral services will be held a 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, in the Phenix United Methodist Church with interment in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mrs. John T. Drewry (Frances Clemmons Drewry), 77, died after a courageous battle with cancer Tuesday night, Dec. 22, 1998 at The Medical Care Center. For 57 years, she was the devoted wife of John T. Drewry of 287 Hilltop Drive, Madison Heights. Born July 20, 1921 in Lynchburg, Va., she was the daughter of the late Robert N. Clemmons and Edna Wright Clemmons. She retired from General Electric after 23 years of service. She was a lifelong member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter, Shelby D. Holt and her husband, Larry, of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Ellen Holt and Julie Holt, both of Lynchburg, and Drew Holt of Philadelphia, Pa.; three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Thelma Clemmons (Buck), Mrs. Lois Clemmons (Robert) and Mrs. Pauline Clemmons (Ralph); special friends, Adele Crews and Joyce Newcomb, both of Madison Heights, Betty Carner of Lynchburg and Ruth and Charlie Eastwood of Charlottesville, and several nieces and nephews. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., Aug. 6, 1904, he was a son of the late Thomas C. Wallace Jr. and Grace Scott Wallace. He was a 1928 graduate of Princeton University. He was the husband of Julia Marsh Albertson and was a retired yardmaster with the Norfolk-Southern Railway. Mr. Albertson was born in Lynchburg, Feb. 21, 1932 to the late Joseph Carter Albertson Sr. and the late Gladys Cordelia Drewry Albertson. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. Born May 16, 1920 in Amherst County, he was the son of the late Sylvester Branham and Vicie Johns Branham. He was a retired farmer, a member of the Monacan Indian Tribe and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Born in Roanoke, March 6, 1918, he was the son of the late Hansford Elliott and Bessie Fox Elliott. Mr. Elliott was the former owner of Elliott Florist and Gifts, a World War II Army veteran, a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason and a long time member and past president of the Lions Club. He is survived by a son, Alex Elliott and his wife, Mary and two grandchildren, Ashleigh Marie Elliott and Charles Alexander Elliott all of Dyersburg, Tenn. She was born May 10, 1924 in N.C., a daughter of the late Luther Elmore Stafford Sr. and Quillie Irene Taunt Stafford. She was a member of the Bedford Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Sue Holland. She is survived by her husband, Paul W. Holland Sr.; a son, Paul W. Holland Jr. of Bluffton, S.C.; a daughter, Faye A. Cowardin of Richmond; a brother, Fred W. Stafford of Thaxton; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and beloved friends, Kevin and Phyllis Dellis and family. Dr. Clarence Edwin Keefer, 93, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, December 20, 1998. He was the husband of the late Virginia Monroe Keefer. Dr. Keefer was born March 7, 1905 in Cameron, W. Va., the son of the late Justus Alvin Keefer and Myrtle Hughes Keefer Gump. He was a retired Orthopedic Surgeon and was past President of the Lynchburg Academy of Medicine and the Virginia Orthopedic Society. He was an active member of the Rotary Club. He graduated from West Virginia University and the University of Cincinnati Medical School. At the University of West Virginia, he was Captain of the 1928 Football Team and was selected as an All-American Fullback. He served as a long time physician to the E.C. Glass Football Team, team physician for the Liberty University Football Team, and also team physician for the VMI Football Team. He also served as a ring side doctor to Hill City Boxing and was awarded the Virginia High School Distinguished Service Award in 1973. He was a retired Naval Commander, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Clarence Edwin Keefer, Jr. He is survived by one son, Dr. Verne Monroe Keefer of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Mrs. Harold Lee Riley, III of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren, Clarence E. Hallie Tuggle Kintz, 91, a retired employee of the National Bank of Washington, D.C., died Monday, December 21, 1998, at the University Park Nursing Home in Richmond. Mrs. Kintz was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Marcia Burns and Emily Nelson Chapters, D.C., for 50 years, in which she held various offices and was a Page at Continental Congress. In her earlier years of employment, she worked for the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., Blackstone’s Florist and WRC Radio Station. Her husband, Clyde B. Kintz, predeceased her in 1985 in San Diego, Calif., where they resided for 15 years. Mrs. Kintz is survived by two daughters, Lorene Kay of Keysville, and Kathaleen Schwier of Oakton; two brothers, John L. Tuggle of Lynchburg, and Robert N. Tuggle of Portsmouth; two sisters, Ann T. Wright of Appomattox, and Inez L. Tuggle of Richmond; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Marlene Carter Logan
Mrs. Marlene Carter Logan, of 4625 Oakdale Drive, departed this life Saturday, December 19, 1998 at her residence. Born in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late Ms. Beatrice Austin. Her husband was the late John Logan, Jr. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Lynch Station. She leaves to cherish her memory to sons, Ronnie Logan and Frank Logan; a daughter, Mrs. Matricia Brown and her husband, Chuck, all of Lynchburg; a brother, James Frank Carter and his wife, Charity, of Silver Springs, Md.; two grandchildren, and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Dennis Craig Madigan
Dennis Craig Madigan, 54, of Madison Heights, died Sunday, December 20, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born January 22, 1944 in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of the late William Madigan and Betty Craig Madigan. He was a program manager at Central Virginia Training Center, an Air Force veteran of Vietnam and a member of the Catholic Church. He is survived by this daughter, Katharine Claire Madigan; his former wife, Janina Nesitz Madigan of Amherst; and two sisters, Donna Graham and Linda Brust, both of California. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Jeff Wilder. HIGH POINT— Ernest Tyler Wingfield, 90, of 201 Greensboro Road, High Point, died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 19, 1998 at Presbyterian Home of High Point. He was a retired railway postal service clerk. Before moving to Presbyterian Home, Mr. Wingfield was a resident of Glen Aire Retirement Community in Cary, N.C. for over four years. Prior to that he was a lifelong resident of Lynchburg. In his active years, Mr. Wingfield was dedicated to the American Legion, and the Apex Lions Club. Carl Simpson Hewitt
Carl Simpson Hewitt, 79, of 1410 Broad Street, Altavista, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 1998 in his home. He was the husband of Ruth Yount Hewitt. Born Aug. 19, 1919 in Newton, N.C., he was a son of the late Marvin G. and Minnie Simpson Hewitt. Carl was a graduate of Newton Conover High School and Clevenger Business College. He entered the U. S. Army July 11, 1944 and was wounded in Manheim, Germany February 27, 1945. He was a member of the 8th Division of Company A-13th Infantry as a rifleman, was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Service Star, Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, and World War II Victory Medal. He was in Oliver General Hospital in Augusta, Ga. until his discharge July 9, 1948. He returned home and resumed his work with Burlington Industries. He was transferred to Altavista in 1964 and retired in 1985 after 43 years with Burlington Industries and the Klopman Division. He was a member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of DAV Chapter 46. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Marvin Richard Hewitt and his wife Doris of Hickory, N.C.; a daughter, Sandra Dalton and her husband Cuyler Dalton of Altavista; a granddaughter, Jennifer McCarrick and her husband Chris; two great-grandchildren, William McCarrick and Maggie McCarrick, all of Hickory, N.C.; and a sister, Mary Hewitt of Newton, N.C. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998 in Green Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Deacon Calvin Elliott, of Route 1, Box 1815, Spout Spring, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the loving and devoted husband of Mrs. Carretta Elliott. Born in Campbell County, he was the son of the late Wyman C. and the late Mrs. Lula Leftwich Elliott. He was a long time member of Long Mountain Baptist Church. Later, he joined Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church so that he might worship with his beloved wife. There he served as a deacon and as the church treasurer. He was a graduate of Hampton Institute. He was retired from Lynchburg Foundry after 35 years of service. He was also a member of the singing Gospel Entertainers. John Taylor “Jack” Whiting
John Taylor “Jack” Whiting, 81, of 108 Lake Drive, Amherst, died Friday, Dec. 18, 1998 at the Briarwood, Amherst after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. For 57 years, he was the husband of Janice Stouffer Whiting. Born July 8, 1917 in Detroit, Mich., he was the son of the late Rolland John “Bob” Whiting and the late Bertha Mouch Whiting. After serving as a medic during World War II on Okinawa, Jack purchased and operated the Morrowdale Creamery in Mt. Gilead, Ohio. After selling the Creamery, Jack and his family moved to Des Plaines, Ill., where he began working for the General Telephone Directory Co. After living there for eight years, he transferred to Des Moines, Iowa, where he would stay another eight years. After being transferred to Virginia in 1970, Jack worked for three years until he was transferred to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, where he became the President of the West Indies Directory Co. While there, he trained Grand Bahama natives to sell telephone directory advertising and eventually take over the entire operation of the company. While in Freeport, he became a Master Mason and also joined the Rotary to become President in 1975. In 1978, Jack returned to Amherst, to happily retire, devoting himself to volunteer work with the Humane Society and the Amherst Rescue Squad Support Group. He was also a member of the Amherst Rotary Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Winton Country Club where he and his wife were members for twenty-seven years. Jack was a member of the Amherst Presbyterian Church, Amherst, where he served as Elder. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children; Sharon Whiting of Chicago, Ill., John S. Whiting and his wife, Bonnie of Tyler, Texas, Judith W. Myers of Amherst, Richard J. Whiting of Arlington, Texas, Mark D. Whiting and his wife, Alicia of Richmond, and Wendy W. Paris and her husband, Bennie of Lynchburg; seven grandchildren, Tad Myers of Amherst and Matthew Myers of Tampa, Fla., Michael Mahnke and Tim Urban, both of Chicago, Steve Whiting of Castle Rock, Colo., Stacey Foster of Flint, Texas, and Jake Paris of Lynchburg. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Kyle Otterbein. The family will receive friends for one hour, prior to the service, beginning at 10 a.m. The family requests those who wish to make memorial contributions consider the Building Fund of Amherst Presbyterian Church, Amherst or the Amherst Rescue Squad.

Ernest Tyler Wingfield
HIGH POINT - Ernest Tyler Wingfield, 90, of 201 Greensboro Road, High Point, died Saturday afternoon, Dec. 19, 1998 at Presbyterian Home of High Point. He was a retired railway postal service clerk. Before moving to Presbyterian Home, Mr. Wingfield was a resident of Glen Aire Retirement Community in Cary, N.C. for over four years. Prior to that he was a lifelong resident of Lynchburg. In his active years, Mr. Wingfield was dedicated to the American Legion, and the Apex Lions Club. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, Dec. 26, 1998, at 2 p.m. in the Glen Aire Retirement Community auditorium, 200 W. Cornwall Drive, Cary, N.C. with the Rev. Carlton Best officiating. Surviving are his wife, Cornelia E. Wingfield of the home, two sons; Neal E. Wingfield and wife Page of Mt. Olive, N.C., and Joseph W. Wingfield and wife Candee of High Point, N.C. Also, surviving are four beloved grandchildren; Joseph, Stella, Daniel and Kellie Wingfield. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the Glen Aire Auditorium. Memorials may be made to Cary American Legion Post 67, Re: Boy’s State, P.O. Box 67, Cary, N.C. 27511. Services are entrusted with Apex Funeral Directors, 511 W. Williams Street (Hwy.55) in Apex, N.C.
