Ruth Bennett Chaffin, 91, of Bedford, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 in the Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 9, 1907 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Dr. Richard Alfred Bennett and Gertrude West Bennett. Her husband was the late Selwyn Russell Chaffin Sr. She was a graduate of Radford College and was a retired school teacher, having taught in the Commonwealth of Virginia for 32 years, 30 of which were in Bedford County. She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard B. and Joanne Chaffin, S. Russell Chaffin both of Lynchburg; a sister, Hilda Garrett, Monticello, AR.; a brother, Edwin Bennett, Bedford; two granddaughters, Christine Chaffin, Katie Chaffin both of Lynchburg. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 1999 in the Greenwood Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass Jr. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Sunday and the family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford and request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Main Street United Methodist Church.

Ira Lee Dalton
GRETNA — Ira Lee Dalton, 92, of 2152 Paisley Road, Gretna, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born Aug. 18, 1906 in Pittsylvania County, he was a son of the late Albert Lee Dalton and Rose Dove Dalton. He was predeceased by a daughter, Brenda Dalton. Mr. Dalton was a retired farmer and of the Primitive Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Velma Brumfield Dalton of the residence; one son, Glenwood Dalton of Gretna; two daughters, Atha Bailey and Judy Dalton both of Gretna; two sisters, Alice Dalton and Jennie Brumfield both of Gretna; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 at Weatherford Primitive Baptist Church by Elder Raymond Goad and Elder Marvin Brumfield. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence, 2152 Paisley Road, Gretna. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Gretna Rescue Squad, P.O. Joseph Alexander Gilchrist Jr.
Joseph Alexander Gilchrist Jr. died Jan. 21, 1999. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio on Feb. 21, 1903. He attended the University School in Cleveland and graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1928. He joined the 1st Cleveland Cavalry in Cleveland and served in the Army in Germany in World War II, attaining the rank of Major. He worked for many years for Sweet Briar College, beginning as Superintendent of the Farm in 1947, and becoming Director of Natural Resources in 1965. He retired in 1971 and moved to Lynchburg where he continued to serve the college in a consulting capacity. He was an active member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served as a member of the vestry; he also volunteered for the Meals on Wheels Program. He was a member of the Bob White Lodge in Lynchburg and was a life long outdoor enthusiast, he had been an active member of the Amherst Rotary Club for many years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Lee Cox Gilchrist, whom he married in 1948, who died in 1988. He is survived by his two daughters, Joan Cox Danzansky of Washington, D.C. and Judith L. Cox Hollohan of Arlington; three grandchildren, Michael Winston Danzansky of Washington, D.C., Katharine Cox Danzansky of Boston, Mass. and Thomas Lee Hollohan of Arlington and a nephew, Daniel Gilchrist Barnes of Hickory, N.C. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Lynchburg, the American Red Cross or the Salvation Army. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church. A private committal service will be held prior to the memorial service. Jane Anthony Kirkpatrick
Jane Anthony Kirkpatrick, 103, of Rt. 1, Evington, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late John Lewis Kirkpatrick. Born Oct. 13, 1895 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Mark and Roberta Mitchell Anthony. She was a long time member of Otterwood Presbyterian Church and retired as Post Master of the U.S. Post Office of Evington. She is survived by a daughter, Jane Kirkpatrick Craddock of Altavista; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, John Lewis Kirkpatrick and two daughters, Elizabeth K. Rosser and Ruth K. Langhorne. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999 in Otterwood Presbyterian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Paul Beighley and Dr. J.P. Kelley. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Jane K. Craddock, 2205 Beverly Heights, Altavista. Winnie Sculthorp Kirrmann
Winnie Sculthorp Kirrmann, 82, a long time resident of Lynchburg, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 in Raleigh, N.C. She was born Jan. 11, 1917 in Mecklenburg County, the daughter of the late Edwin Samuel Sculthorp and Annie Lee Bowers Sculthorp. She retired from Howard Johnson and was a member of Monroe United Methodist Church. She is survived by two daughters, Thelma Darden Williams and her husband, Edward Bruce of Raleigh, N.C. and Barbara Darden of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Enslow Kable of New York, N.Y., Hartman Kable of Albuquerque, N.M., Moffett Kable Burgess of Seattle, Wash., Robert Hayes of Bridgeport, Conn. and Thomas Hayes of Stuart Draft; two great-grandchildren, one brother, Edwin Lee Sculthorp of Stoney Creek; four sisters, Annie S. Rideout of Newport News, Katherine Spindler of Fort Lee, N.J., Lacy Hawkins of Gasburg and Lena S. Wilkes of Bedford and a number of nieces and nephews including Ralph Wilkes of Lynchburg. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Sculthorp family cemetery in Brunswick County. The family suggests memorials be made to the Monroe United Methodist Church. Traia Faith Kiley Laurent
Traia Faith Kiley Laurent, 82, of Lynchburg, on Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, went to meet her husband and her family members who led the way. She was born June 8, 1916 in Racine, Wis., a daughter of the late William Manton Kiley and Mary Eldred Kiley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph David Laurent; two sons, John and Donald Laurent; a grandson, Stephen Laurent; a brother, Manton Kiley; two sisters, Ruth Stendahl and Alice Christophersen. She is survived by three daughters, Marie M. Sandor of Wis., Jeanne Adele Laurent of Colo. and Judith Ann Ingeman of Ariz.; seven sons, Joseph Laurent Jr. of Wis., James Laurent of Wis., Edward Laurent of Goode, David Laurent of Calif., Mark Laurent of Texas, Dennis Laurent of Wis. and Anthony Laurent of Tenn.; a close and loving sister, Vivian Ager of Wis.; 20 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Laurent lived in Racine and Adams-Friendship, Wis. until retirement about 20 years ago. Most recently she lived very happily with her many friends at Valley View Retirement Center. She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Lynchburg. She collected porcelain birds and loved crochet, reading, crossword puzzles, bingo, humorous stories and keeping in touch with her family. She will be sadly missed by her family and all her friends at Valley View. Private family services will be held today, Jan. 23, 1999. AMHERST — Jim Harvey McMahon, 70, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 at his residence. He was the husband of Anita Gaudes McMahon. Born Nov. 4, 1928 in Gaines, N.Y., he was a son of the late Thomas James and Irene Hayes McMahon. He was a member and Deacon of the Amherst Baptist Church, a retired mechanic from the Pan American Airlines and an Air Force veteran of WWII and the Korean Conflict. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Timothy James McMahon and wife, Lisa of Richmond; one daughter, Wendy Sue McMahon, Clifton Park, N.Y.; two sisters, Audrey McMahon and Virginia Coleman both of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren, Tyler Niedhammer, Kacey Niedhammer and Moriah Niedhammer all of Clifton Park, N.J., Katrina McMahon and Christopher McMahon both of Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Driskill Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the Amherst Cemetery. Roberta M. Sames
Roberta M. Sames passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Harry Q. Sames. Born Dec. 6, 1936 she was a member of Whites United Methodist Church, a former member of the Boyscouts and of the Girlscouts in the Rustburg and Campbell County area, a former certified nurses aid and a former nurses aid in the Campbell County and Lynchburg area. She is survived by one son, Thomas Glenn Sames of Atlanta, Ga.; one daughter, Sharon Anne Blankenship and son-in-law, Dean A. Blankenship of Evington; two brothers, Richard Eddy and Norman Eddy and one sister, Donia Overby all of Pa. Evelyn Brown Wooldridge
Evelyn Brown Wooldridge, 84, of Lynchburg and formerly of Forest, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 1999 in the Medical Care Center. She was born Nov. 3, 1914 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Hugh Pleasant Brown and Martha Millner Brown. Her husband was the late Earl Wooldridge. She was a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sisters and a brother-in-law, Vivian B. Watson, Fey B. and Charles E. Bumgarner all of Lynchburg. Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 1999 in the Virginia Memorial Park by the Rev. Robert Gochenour. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Rebecca Wartman Ellis
Rebecca Wartman (Reba) Ellis, 87, of Lynchburg, formerly of Blacksburg, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 at the Medical Care Center in Lynchburg. She was born in South Hill, June 17, 1911, a daughter of William B. and Carolyn Bracey Wartman. She was a member of the Rustburg Presbyterian Church. Reba was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She was a past president of the school section of the Virginia Department of Education, served as librarian for the Training School of the College of William and Mary, librarian for the County of Appomattox and taught in primary schools in Lynchburg and Rustburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ellis of Buckingham County. Surviving are one daughter, Kathryn Ellis VanHook; two grandchildren, Kenneth Crawford VanHook Jr. of Nashville and Shannon VanHook Harris of Raleigh, N.C. and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Rustburg Presbyterian Church. Evelyn Cantrell Jones, 78, of Natural Bridge Station, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, in the Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Jones was born in Bradshaw, W.Va. February 7, 1920, and was a daughter of the late John Sam Cantrell and Mary Payne Cantrell. She owned and operated Evelyn’s Beauty Shop for many years. Mrs. Jones is survived by her husband, Floyd Wilson Jones of Natural Bridge Station; one son and daughter-in-law, Carl L. and Carol Horn of Glasgow; three brothers, Ed Cantrell, J.S. Cantrell, both of Lynchburg, Gene Cantrell of Silver Springs, Md.; two sisters, Bea Cantrell and Lou Cantrell, both of Lynchburg; grandchildren, Rhonda Kern of Springwood, Mark Bishop of Rockbridge Baths, Debbie Jordan of Southpoint, Ohio; great-grandson, Nathaniel Squire Kern and four other great-grandchildren. Veronica T. Leddy
Veronica T. Leddy, 79, of Bellport, died Jan. 17, 1999. Her husband Joseph preceded her in death in 1974. Born Feb. 2, 1919 in Lynchburg. She was a homemaker, a member of South Country School District PTA volunteer and a lifelong member of St. Joseph the Worker RC Church. She is survived by three daughters, Cecelia Walsh, Barbara Cacicio, Joanne Leddy; one son, Joseph Leddy, six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and two brothers, Walter Magri and Ralph Magri. A Mass was conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 at St. Joseph the Worker RC Church, E. Patchogue. Burial was in LI National Cemetery, Pinelawn, N.Y. Family visitation was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999.

Miss Frankie L. Mitchell of East Ferry Road, Gladys, passed away January 20, 1999, at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born July 20,1918, she was the daughter of the late Mary V. Mitchell and Eddie J. Mitchell Sr. She was preceded in death by one brother, Eddie J. Mitchell Jr. (Melvin). She was a faithful member of Gladys Weleyan Church. She is survived by one sister, Doris M. Jefferson and her husband, Elmer E. Jefferson of Gladys; three nephews, William N. Jefferson Sr. and wife, Patricia of Gladys, Michael E. Jefferson and his wife, Rhonda of Jackson, Tenn. and James E. Mitchell and wife, Louise of Moneta. She is also survived by many great nieces and nephews. She was the wife of 68 years of the late Luther James West Sr. Born Jan. 8, 1912 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of the late Nannie Doss Eades and John Merriman Eades. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Altavista. Teresa Smith Wood
Teresa Smith Wood, 82, of 5913 Hines Circle, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999 at Avante’ Nursing Home. She was the beloved wife of Frank Jennings Wood. Mrs. Wood was born July 28, 1916, in Lynchburg to Samuel N. Smith and Theresa Smith. Mrs. Wood was a member of Timberlake United Methodist Church and the Susanna Wesley Circle. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Selma Smith Brooks and Hilda Smith Milstead and a brother, James Garland Smith. Mrs. Wood is survived by her very special daughter, Faye Wood Talley of Lynchburg; a grandson, Mark S. Talley and his wife, Donna, of Wake Forest, N.C. and two great-granddaughters, Danielle Talley and Jessica Talley. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. James Tongue officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Merrill Howard Grubbs
Merrill Howard Grubbs of Lynchburg, died January 19, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Alma Lancaster Grubbs for fifty years. He was born November 20, 1927 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Howard L. and Florence B. Grubbs. An alumnus of Maryville College, he was a Presbyterian missionary, serving for thirty years as a hospital administrator in South Korea and Lesotho, Africa. Since retiring in Lynchburg, he had been an active member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He is survived by his wife, Alma, and five children: Jeff Grubbs and his wife Gloria of Lynchburg; Cyndi Viemeister and her husband Peter (son Ben) of Bedford; Scott Grubbs and his wife Sarah (children Jonathan, Beth and Daniel) of Greer, SC; Tim Grubbs Lowly and his wife Sherrie (daughter Temma) of Chicago, IL; and Amy Moore and her husband Bill (daughters Rachel and Naomi) of Lynchburg. In addition, he is survived by brother Owen Grubbs and his wife Marcia of Chambersburg, PA; sister Doris Timmerman and her husband Harold of Sun City, AZ; and brother David Grubbs and his wife Sue of Murfreesboro, TN. A family visitation will be held Thursday, January 21, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the Cheatham Room at Rivermont Presbyterian Church, 2424 Rivermont Ave. A memorial service will be held Friday, January 22, at 11:00 a.m. at Rivermont Presbyterian Church, 2424 Rivermont Ave. The body will be donated for medical research. Patrick Bradley Johnston
Patrick Bradley Johnston, 15, of Evansville, Ind., died early Saturday morning, Jan. 16, 1999. He was riding in a truck driven by a fellow classmate, Jeremy Alexander Clouse, 17, of Evansville, Ind. who also died from injuries suffered in the accident. Patrick attended the Crossroads Christian Church and was a member of the West Lynchburg Baptist Church. Surviving are his parents, Vicki B. and Michael J. Kelly of Evansville; his grandparents, Claudia O. Bradley of Lynchburg and Joan and Robert Kelly of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; two sisters, Mary and Christina Kelly both of Evansville and a brother, William Johnston of Charleston, S.C. The funeral service was held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999 at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 4200 Epworth Road, Newburgh, Ind. 47630, the Revs. Kevin Maxey and Phil Heller officiated. The body was cremated. James Stuart Gordon Lane Jr.
James Stuart Gordon Lane Jr., 58, of Madison Heights, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Edith Fitzgerald Lane. Born in Charlottesville, July 16, 1940, he was a son of Elsie Gardner Lane and the late James Stuart Gordon Lane Sr. He was an independent mobile home mover. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, Timothy W. Lane of Spotsylvania and Thomas W. Carol Ann Williams Moore, 57, of Rt. 3, Rustburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999. She was the wife of Aubrey M. Moore. She was born April 13, 1941 in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late Elmo O. Williams and Martha Ponton Williams Carter. She was an employee of Central Virginia Training Center. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Aubrey M. “Doole Bug” Moore Jr. of Rustburg; two daughters, Audrey M. Myers of Rustburg and April M. Mr. Overstreet was the owner and operator of Overstreet Septic Service and was in the business for 33 years. He was a member of Shiloh Methodist Church. Cassie Smith Rafferty, 94, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999 at Heritage Hall in Charlottesville. She was the wife of the late William A. Rafferty. Mrs. Rafferty was born Oct. 25, 1904 in Lynchburg to the late George Smith and the late Mary C. Smith. She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her son, Ronald C. Rafferty and his wife, Doris of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Gertrude Nichols and Daisy Wood both of Lynchburg; two brothers, George Smith of Lynchburg and Claude Smith of Roanoke; a daughter-in-law, Carol Rafferty of Rustburg, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Howell A. Robinson Sr., 83, of 512 Dawnridge Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Juliet Adams Robinson and was retired from the H.A. Robinson Peanut Company. He was born in Roanoke, Sept. 12, 1915 to the late James E. and Glenna Dillard Robinson. SPOUT SPRING — Reginald Riley Spradlin, 72, of Route 1, died Tuesday night, Jan. 19, 1999 of cancer in Virginia Baptist Hospital. Reggie was born in Lynchburg, Dec. 21, 1926, a son of James Henry Spradlin of Spout Spring and the late Mary Roakes Spradlin. He was a member of Bethlchem United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and served on many other committees, a Charter Member of the Concord Rescue Squad serving on the Board of Directors, as president and on other positions, lifetime member of the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, served on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, Piedmont Division, a Navy veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Babcock & Wilcox. In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Katherine Elder Spradlin; two sons, Larry Kent Spradlin and his wife, Becky and Kenneth Wayne Spradlin; three grandchildren, Margaret Catherine Spradlin, Joshua Kent Spradlin and Regina Massie Perrow; one great-grandson, David Wayne Perrow and a brother, Thomas G. Mildred M. Barrett
Mildred Lucille M. Barrett, 96, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998 at our Lady of Peace. She was born in 1902 in New Albany, Ind., but grew up in Lynchburg from the age of 3. She attended Dickenson College and dedicated her life to helping others including “Meals on Wheels’, Church Ingathering, Head Start and volunteered at the Lynchburg Training School for many years. She was a very active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Lynchburg and Church of our Saviour in Charlottesville. Mildred received the award for the Mother of the Year for volunteer service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton A. Barrett; a son, Carlton A. Barrett Jr. and a brother, Herbert Leland Mix. She is survived by a daughter, Nancy Baldwin of Charlottesville; a son, Henry Shaw Barrett II of Corinth, Miss.; eight grandchildren, Judy Baldwin Kenter, William Gregory Baldwin, Kathleen Baldwin Pinnix, Susan Baldwin Slaw, Carol Barrett Lewin, Mary Lee Barrett Peksa, Carlton A. Barrett III and Henry Shaw Barrett III and 11 great-grandchildren. Guy was born Dec. 3, 1925 in Charlottesville, the son of the late Guy Edward Crawford Sr. and the late Virginia Armstrong Crawford. He was a member of Amelon United Methodist Church. He was a dispatcher for 42 years in the trucking industry retiring in 1982 from Hemingway Transport. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Steven Glenn and Marie Crawford of Richmond; a daughter, Leigh Anderson Harlow of Lovingston and a step-son, Christopher Anderson of Monroe; six grandchildren, Steven G. Crawford II, Brooke E. Crawford, Hunter Harlow, Courtney Harlow, Jon Russell Crawford and Cody Harlow; two great-grandchildren, Paitin and Natalie Crawford; two sisters, Aeleene Mayberry (Elmo) and Mary Ann Paris (Pete); one brother, Harry (Buddy) Crawford (Linda) and one sister-in-law, Peggy Crawford. He was predeceased by one brother, Wendell Crawford. Guy lived a full life, filled with his devotion to family, his love for the outdoors and his constant pursuit of knowledge. E. Donald Fuerst, 78, of Smith Mountain Lake and Sarasota, Fla., died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999. He was born Nov. 24, 1920 in Pittsburgh, Pa., a son of the late Earl Fuerst and Marie Vogel Fuerst. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen Wilson Fuerst. A pioneer of the independent life brokerage business, he founded his agency, Special Risk Underwriter, Inc. in 1955 in Pittsburgh and later opened offices in Fla. in 1962. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., past president of the Broward County Life Underwriters Association, past Commodore of the Coral Ridge Yacht Club, past president of the Florida Blue Gavel Association, a current member of the Halifax River Yacht Club and was a Mason. He is survived by his wife, Mary Whitney Fuerst; two sons, David D. Fuerst and wife, Mona, Douglas P. Merrill Howard Grubbs of Lynchburg, died January 19, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Alma Lancaster Grubbs for fifty years. He was born November 20, 1927 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Howard L. and Florence B. Grubbs. An alumnus of Maryville College, he was a Presbyterian missionary, serving for thirty years as a hospital administrator in South Korea and Lesotho, Africa. Since retiring in Lynchburg, he had been an active member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. He is survived by his wife, Alma, and five children: Jeff Grubbs and his wife Gloria of Lynchburg; Cyndi Viemeister and her husband Peter (son Ben) of Bedford; Scott Grubbs and his wife Sarah (children Jonathan, Beth and Daniel) of Greer, SC; Tim Grubbs Lowly and his wife Sherrie (daughter Temma) of Chicago, IL; and Amy Moore and her husband Bill (daughters Rachel and Naomi) of Lynchburg. Kallie Lee Overstreet, 53, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999 at his residence. He was the husband of Betty Overstreet. Mr. Overstreet was born March 10, 1945 in Evington to Daniel Stevens Overstreet and Janie Witt Overstreet. Mr. Overstreet was the owner and operator of Overstreet Septic Service and was in the business for 33 years. He was a member of Shiloh Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, his sons and daughters, Brian Kallie Overstreet, Vickie Overstreet Litten, Patricia Mae Overstreet and Tommy Lee Overstreet; two sons-in-law, David Litten and Chris Wendt; three brothers, Mike Overstreet, Daniel Overstreet and Dean Overstreet; seven sisters, Arlene Logwood, Mattie Ashlock, Liz Keatts, Alice Summer, Phyllis George, Martha Phillips and Gloria Hall; three grandchildren, Charlie Litten, Kelly Litten and Sarah Campbell. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel by the Rev. Scott Dean and the Rev. Steve Hundley officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Larry Campbell, 16449 Leesville Road. Diuguid Waterlick Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jean W. Taylor formerly of Lynchburg, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999 at Fair Oaks Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late George H. Taylor Sr. She was the loving mother of George H. Taylor Jr., Diane Cahill and the late Michael A. Taylor, devoted grandmother of five and great-grandmother of one. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999 at Everly Funeral Home, 10565 Main Street, Fairfax. Interment will follow at National Memorial Park, Falls Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sons, Brandon Wayne White, Moneta, Wesley White, Bedford; a daughter, Sara White, Bedford and a brother, Bob White, Bedford. Harry Samuel Winfrey Jr.
NEWPORT NEWS — Harry Samuel “Sam” Winfrey Jr., beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999. He was born in Roanoke in 1923, graduated in 1940 from Andrew Lewis High School in Salem and had been a resident of Newport News since the early 1940s. He also served in the U.S. Navy on an LST # 973 in the South Pacific during World War II. Sam is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Kelley Winfrey; two sons, two daughters, two brothers, one sister, seven grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one loving aunt, Alma Winfrey of Roanoke. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 14, 1999 at North Riverside Baptist Church and burial services followed in Peninsula Memorial Park. Arrangements were handled by Weymouth Funeral Home.

Samuel Watts Burford
Samuel Watts Burford, 81, of Monroe, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999 at his home. He was the husband of Lorena Satterfield Burford for 43 years. Mr. Burford was born Oct. 13, 1917 in Amherst County to the late Russell Burford and the late Zada Watts Burford. He was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church and a WWII Army veteran. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, James David and Allison Burford of Anitoch, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen B. and Mike Altman of Monroe; a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Jim Carnley of Goode; a brother, Robert Burford of Monroe; a sister, Ossie B. He was born Dec. 30, 1951 in Amherst County, the son of Virginia Hamilton Johns and the late Lemon Wiley Johns. He was a former employee of Crown Cork & Seal Co. and was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a brother, Matthew L. Johns. In addition to his loving mother, he is survived by five brothers, Leonard W. Johns of Amherst, Warren E. Johns, Dewey L. Johns and his wife, Elise of Lynchburg, Donald R. Allen Andrew “Mutt” Martin, 81, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999 in Guggenheimer Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Mary Jane Watts Martin. He was born Feb. 3, 1917 in Lynchburg, the son of the late Andrew Gaston Martin and Cora Dunkley Martin. Martin all of Lynchburg, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Whitten Timberlake Chapel by the Rev. Lenn E. Lloyd. AMHERST — Carrington Horsley “Bud” Proffitt, 83, of Amherst, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 17, 1999 at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville. Born Nov. 9, 1915 in Nelson County, he was a son of the late John Fletcher Proffitt and Verdie Tyree Proffitt. He was a retired employee of the Alexandria Dairy, a World War II Army veteran and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Lovingston. He is survived by his brother, James Riley Proffitt of Lovingston; his sister, Mary P. Walker of Port Charlotte, Fla. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Estelle P. Clark and Dora P. Hodges along with three brothers, John Morris Proffitt, Mell Proffitt and Irvin Proffitt. A funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating. Interment in Mt. View Cemetery in Lovingston.
