Ruth Johnson Aston of Laurel, Md., died March 13, 1999. She was the daughter of Mrs. Charlotte Johnson of Altavista. She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Grimes, Linda Aston and Kathy Bartolomeo and two grandsons, Michael and James Bartolomeo; a sister, Mary Johnson and a brother, William D. Johnson. She was a world traveler and a founding member of the University United Methodist church and retired from Prince George’s County Memorial Library System. memorial service will be announced later. Louise Dunn Barger
APPOMATTOX — Louise Dunn Barger, 79, of Rt. 5, died Thursday, March 18, 1999 in the Appomattox Health Care Center. She was the wife of Henry T. Barger for 61 years. Born in Bland County, July 7, 1919, she was a daughter of the late Lena T. and Charles M. Dunn. She was a member of Appomattox Courthouse Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Marlene B. Simpson and Mrs. Rebekah B. Burke and her husband, William A. (Bill) all of Appomattox; a son, Robert M. Barger and his wife, Marlene of Miami, Fla.; three sisters, Mrs. Kendall (Nancy) Minnick of Bristol, Mrs. Hugh (Ruth) Lewis of McDonough, Ga., Mrs. Kermit (Margaret) Mustard of Pulaski, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 21, 1999 in Liberty Cemetery by the Rev. Lanny Howe and the Rev. Millard Stimpson. Ruth Elizabeth Beemer, 87, of Lynchburg, died Friday, March 19, 1999, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Beemer was born Oct. 6, 1911, in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late Charles Edward Judson Beemer and the late Gladys Goff Beemer. She was a member of First Christian Church and a retired employee of Charles Dept. Store and Pearsons Drug Store. She is survived by her niece, E. Louise Beemer Cheatham of Lynchburg, and a cousin, Charles M. Beemer of Mannassas. She is preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Beemer Sprouse and a brother, Charles E. Beemer. A funeral service will conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 22, 1999, at First Christian Church, with the Rev. Dr. Roger W. Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. Edward Franklin Burch
Edward Franklin Burch, 73, of Monroe, (Amherst Co.), died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, in Lynchburg Hospital. He was born March 12, 1926, in Amherst County, son of the late Howard Tallie Burch and Allie Davis Burch. He was a life-long member of Oronoco Church of The Brethren, a charter member of Pedlar Volunteer Fire Dept. and a U.S. Navy veteran of WW II. He retired from the Virginia Dept. of Transportation after 28 years of service. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lowrene Wilmer. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Smith Burch; three brothers, McKinley Burch and David Burch, both of Buena Vista, Emery Burch of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Rosa Bradley of Amherst Co., Jean Argenbright of Roanoke, and Rachel Bowyer of Hurt. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Oronoco Brethren Church, with the Rev. Arnold Bradley and the Rev. Kenneth Payne Officiating. Ret. Sgt. Henry B. Camm Jr.
Ret. Sgt. Henry B. Camm Jr., 44, of Killeen, Texas, departed this life Monday, March 15, 1999 at a Temple hospital. He was born July 2, 1954 in Lynchburg, the son of Mrs. Jeanette Camm and the late Henry Benjamin Camm Sr. and he was the husband of Mrs. Cynthia Camm. Camm lived in Killeen, Texas area for 13 years. He worked as a counselor at Cedar Crest Hospital in Belton. He retired from the U.S. Army with 15 years of service, during which time he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon Driver and Mechanic Badge and Expert Rifle Badge. He served as Tiler for Jno G. Lewis Lodge No. 622, a member of Mount Sinai Chapter No. 42, the treasurer for South Central Texas Commandery No. 37 and the commander-in-chief of Central Texas Consistory No. 306 from 1995 to 1996. He was elevated to Grand inspector General of the 33rd Degree of the Scottish Rite in Oct., 1996, the highest honor in the organization. He most recently served as Illustrious Potentate of Nubia Temple 191. Camm was a member of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order of the Nobles of Mystic Shrine, which awarded him the Legion of Honor award. He was a member of the Harge Commander of the Rite. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9191 and Disabled American Veterans. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by four sons, D’Havelon Cardwell of Roanoke, Naamdi Camm of Fort Bragg, N.C., Dexter Lee and Robert Williams both of Killeen, Texas; a brother, James E. Camm of Fairbanks, Alaska; three sisters, Deborah Ware of Madison Heights, Margie E.C. Jones of Virginia Beach and Angelia Crummie of Fort Campbell, Ky. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. James Cobbs officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Burial Park. His remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Armeta S. Jordan, formerly of Appomattox, departed this life Friday morning in Avante Nursing Home. Born in Buckingham County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Minne Walker Spencer. She was the wife of the late Rev. Nelson R. Jordan. She is survived by a daughter, Carsue Miller, 10 grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. LONG ISLAND — Warren George Layne, 77, of 4138 Buffalo Road, Long Island, died Friday morning, March 19, 1999 in the Halifax Regional Hospital in South Boston. Born in Pittsylvania County, March 2, 1922, he was the son of the late Jimmy Layne and Mrs. Ora Lovelace Layne. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Booker, Walter, Arby and Robert Layne and three sisters, Mrs. Victoria Graves, Mrs. Madeline Hubbard and Ms. Mary Madeline Layne. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by B.G.F. in Altavista and was a member of Mt. Airy Baptist Church where he served as a member of the Mt. Airy Male Chorus. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Rebecca Layne of the residence; one son, Jessie Layne and his wife, Beverley of Nathalie; one daughter, Barbara Pannell and her husband, Donnie Pannell Sr. of Brookneal; three brothers, James (J.D.) Layne of Gretna, Jimmy Layne of Nathalie and Joe Layne of Long Island; five sisters, Mrs. Erma Barbour of Gretna, Mrs. Cora Barbour and Mrs. Marie Patrick both of Nathalie, Mrs. Ruby Hall of Long Island and Mrs. Edith Watson of Newark, Del., six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and other relatives. Bessie Mae Payne Moyer, 86, of Gladys, departed this life Friday, March 19, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. Born June 23, 1912 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Benjamin Payne and Bessie Woodall Payne and her devoted stepmother, Minerva Walker Payne. Bessie was twice married, first to the late John Edward Kabler and then to the late Clyde Herbert Moyer. She was a member of the Wesleybury United Methodist Church for many years. She is survived by one daughter, Anna Mae Kabler of Gladys; two sons, John Frederick Kabler and his wife, Carolyn of Louisville, Ky. and Thomas Harvey Kabler of Gladys; four brothers, John Mosby Payne of Md., James Payne and his wife, Elsie of North Augusta, S.C., Thomas B. Payne Jr. and his wife, Dell and Russell Rudolph Payne (half brother) all of Altavista; one sister, Jean Sarno and her husband, Ralph of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Sophia Mae Kabler and John Russell Kabler; one great-granddaughter, Nataleigh Elizabeth Kabler and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends. Pearl Lucado Baxandall, 88, of 409 Euclid Avenue, died Thursday, March 18, 1999 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Percy Baxandall. Born in Appomattox County, Sept. 27, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Kate and Edward L. Lucado. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. She is survived by three sisters, Mabel White of Keysville, Nelda Garrett and her husband, Nathan and Ruby Reynolds and her husband, Harold all of Appomattox; one brother, Alton Lucado and his wife, Mary of Appomattox; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Lucado of Keysville and Eleanora Lucado of Fla. and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Page and three brothers, Homer, Eddie and Calvin Lucado. Florence Calder
Florence Calder, 92, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She had resided for the past several years at Westminster-Canterbury. Born in Ridgeway, Pa., she was a graduate of Eastman and Julliard Schools of Music and pursued a lifelong musical career in voice and piano. Mrs. Calder, known professionally as Florence Vickland, has been a Lynchburg resident for 49 years, retiring as Professor of Music from Randolph-Macon in 1975 after 25 years. She is survived by one son, Howard Calder of Denver, Colo. and several grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Spring Hill Cemetery. Mary Frances Reynolds Cox, 88, of 210 Flynn Street, Gladys, died Thursday, March 18, 1999 in Camelot Hall of Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Jack R. Cox. Born July 9, 1910 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late Samson Reynolds and Fannie Ellington Reynolds. She was a member of Wesleybury United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Jack T. Cox of Lynch Station and Sam N. Cox of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Mary C. Flynn of Gladys, Emily C. Simmons of Danville and Ruby C. Viar of Gladys; two sisters, Carrie R. Gallier and Sadie R. Williamson both of Lynchburg, 19 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dorothy C. Rice; one son, Billy M. Cox; two sisters, Elsie R. Dudley and Edna R. Jamerson and four brothers, Arthur Reynolds, Calvin Reynolds, Russell Reynolds and L C Reynolds. Born July 4, 1903 in Halifax County, she was a daughter of the late Frank Newton and Katie Sharp Newton. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Altavista High School. She is survived by one son, Malcolm Drinkard of Lake Wales, Fla.; one half brother, Ray Newton of Lynchburg; one half sister, Zelma Davis of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Daniel Drinkard, David Drinkard and John Drinkard, six great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Frances Nettie Bell Duigiud, formerly of 2121 Bedford Avenue, departed this life Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Camelot Nursing Home. She was born in Lynchburg, Aug. 4, 1905 to the late John Mark Diuguid and Genora Taliaferro Diuguid. She was a graduate of Virginia Seminary and a life time member of Rivermont Baptist Church. She was a devout Sunday School teacher and a Bible Scholar. Anyone who was ever taught by her was truly blessed. She is survived by a foster brother, Arthur Clark of Salem; her loving and devoted neighbors, Mrs. Alcinda Hale and her son, Jackie and Mrs. Blanche Green and her children, also the Langhorne family, Sales, Douglas, Moss and Charlton families. The family will leave from the home of Jackie Hale, 2123 Bedford Avenue at 10:30 a.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 1999 at Rivermont Baptist Church with the Rev. Born in Lynchburg, July 10, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Mitchell Bell and Dorothy Bell Horsley. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She attended Holy Cross Catholic Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, John Wesley Bell and two grandchildren. Mrs. Hubbard is survived by five sons, Mitchell Stephen Hubbard and Gary Patrick Hubbard both of Forest, John Abbott Hubbard, Timothy Duane Hubbard and Anthony Jay Hubbard all of Evington; two daughters, Gloria Sue Lewis of Evington and Angela Regina Hudson of Lynchburg; one brother, Wayne Lee Horsley of Woodstock, 20 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two nephews. She was employed by Blue Cross/Blue Shield of N.C. and was a charter member of Mead Memorial United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Barry A. Moorefield and Rita of Rustburg; a daughter, Valerie Moorefield Ricedorf and Doug of New Bloomfield, Pa.; two loving sisters, Betty J. Davidson and Peggy J. Moore both of Lynchburg and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. Terry L. Clark officiating. She is survived by her four sons, Edward O. Wilson, Lorenzo L. Wilson and Roy T. Wilson and his wife, Lois all of Rustburg and Luther C. Wilson of Lynchburg; four daughters, Lavorn W. Danos, Myrtice W. Jennings and Eleanor W. Sheriff of Lynchburg and Mazie W. Dr. E. Ashby Woods Jr., 75, of Bainbridge, Ga., died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at his residence. Born Jan. 27, 1924 and was a native of Pedlar Mills. He was the son of Edward Ashby Woods and Gladys Hooten Woods and married Dorothy Myers Woods Oct. 31, 1947. Mr. Woods operated a family practice from 1958 to 1989, served as Company Physician for Amoco Fabrics and Fibers Company from 1973 to 1991. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bainbridge, Ga., a pilot in the U.S. Air Force and a veteran of World War II, former chief of staff of Memorial Hospital, American Medical Association, Georgia Medical Association, V.F.W. Post 4904 and American Legion Post 62. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Belle Woods Saddler of Charlotte, N.C., Elizabeth Woods LeBell of Charlotte, N.C., Ellen Woods Demperio of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, William Dabney Woods of Pedlar Mills and seven grandchildren. Murrell Lewis Denn, 85, formerly of Front Royal, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at the Lynchburg Medical Care Center in Lynchburg. Mrs. Denn, was born Nov. 4, 1913, in Covington, the daughter of the late Asa S. and Pearl G. Tanner Lewis. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Gregory Denn III. Winthrop Roser Carter, 77, of Colonial Heights, died Sunday, March 14, 1999 at Colonial Heights Convalescent Center. He was the son of the late I.B. and Laura M. Carter, the widower of Carolyn Carter and a native of Lynchburg. He was a member of American Legion Post 284, Colonial Heights Optimist, Colonial Heights Baptist Church and the former Clerk of Colonial Heights School Board. Mr. Carter was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and retired from North Western Railroad. He is survived by his son, W.R. Born May 10, 1921 in Campbell County, he was a son of the late William David Holland and Hattie Clementine Fariss Holland. He was a retired farmer. He is survived by one sister, Martha Holmes Hockett of Lynchburg; two special brothers-in-law, Henry C. Winston and Harold O. Hockett; sister-in-law, Lula D. Holland; a very devoted and special sister-in-law, Cornelia C. Holland; numerous devoted nieces and nephews whom he loved very much and a special niece whom he called “my nurse”, Clem Shelton of Gretna. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wesley F. Mary Catherine Mitchell Branch, 84, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 after more than a week of hospitalization with pneumonia. A Lynchburg native, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Cora Mitchell. She was married to the late M. Stuart Branch, Jr., a design engineer, for 47 years. She survived by one daughter, Ann Branch McKellips of Lynchburg; two grandchildren, Robert Branch-Dasch of Tempe, Ariz. and Valerie Bonini of Sacramento Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. J.W. Marks and Mrs. Leslie Cash, both of Lynchburg. Visitation will be at Diuguid’s Rivermont Avenue facilities from 7-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17. Elsie Frances Cabell
NORWOOD - Elsie Frances Cabell, 82, of Falls Church and formerly of Inglewood “Nelson County”died Thursday, March 11, 1999 in Northern Va. Born December 10, 1916 at Tom Creek, she was a daughter of the late Somers Eubank Cabell and Elsie Hughes Cabell. She was a graduate of Longwood College in 1939 after which she taught school for several years. During World War II she worked with the American Red Cross and retired in 1982 after 40 years of service. She was the National Director of the office of personnel of the American Red Cross and was the first women to hold that position. Afterwards she became a volunteer consultant with the League of the National Red Cross and the Red Cross Crescent in Geneva, Switzerland. She is survived by a brother C. Patrick Cabell of Albuquerque, N.M.; three cousins, Mrs. Boyd Tucker and Bettie Cabell both of Lovingston and Robert Self of Warminister, and Andrew Gantt, II of Wingina. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the graveside at Inglewood with the Rev. John Gordon officiating. Edith Dodson Cunningham, 87, of 516 Horseman Drive died Saturday, March 13, 1999. Born in Nathalie on Jan. 3, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Noel Osman Dodson and Lillie Blanche Hardy Dodson and was the widow of Herbert M. Cunningham. Mrs. Cunningham attended Longwood College in Farmville and the Virginia Baptist School of Nursing. She was a long time employee of Leggetts Department Store. A former member of Catawba Baptist Church, Nathalie, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, the Joy Group and the Evening Circle. She was also a member of The Extension Homemakers Club, The Loyal Club and the Fort Hill Woman’s Club. She is survived by her niece, Annie Bob Read and her husband Lee A. of Lynchburg; two great nephews; Rick Read and David Read; and a beloved friend, Harry Miller. She was preceded in death by her brother, Noel Osman Dodson, Jr. who died in action during WWII. A funeral service will be conducted 12 p.m. today in Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. Elizabeth (Betty) Thompson Hoback of Roanoke, passed away Friday, March 12, 1999. She was the daughter of the late Samuel T. Thompson and Laura Watkins Thompson of Rustburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold N. Hoback and brother, S. James Thompson Jr. of Lynchburg. Mrs. Hoback was a graduate of Mary Washington College and the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She taught at Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing and was a strong supporter of Center in the Square and of the Children’s Medical Center of Community Hospital where she served as a volunteer. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Christi H. and Charles M. Crutchfield; a son and daughter-in-law, H. David and Marie B. Hoback all of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Crutchfield, Samantha Christian Hoback, Macie Elizabeth Hoback; brothers, Stephen L. Thompson, M.D. of Rustburg, Colonel Robert A. Thompson, Retired of San Antonio, Texas; sister-in-law, Mrs. Dean H. Young and several nieces and nephews. W. Page Powers
W. Page Powers, 76, of Bedford, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 at his residence on Old Lynchburg Salem Turnpike. He was born in Bedford County on March 8, 1923, a son of the late Piercy Page Powers and Nannie Shepherd Powers. He was a Army veteran serving in World War II and he retired as First Sergeant from the Virginia National Guard Company A, 116th Infantry, 29th Division. Page was retired from the Elks National Home with over 34 years of service. He was a longtime member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, the VFW Peaks of Otter Post #2157, the BPOE Elks Lodge #321, a charter member of the Blue Ridge Chitterling Club and a member of the 29th Division Association. Page was also a proud member of the Bedford High School football squad, “The Otters” from 1938 to 1941. He was an avid quail hunter and fisherman. Page is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marie Burnette Powers; his son, William Burnette Powers and his wife Martha of Farmville; his brother, Thomas Frederick “Fred” Powers and his wife Jackie of Bedford; two grandsons, Mathew Burnette Powers and John William Powers both of Farmville; his nieces, Cynthia Powers, Richmond; Cecilia Janney, Fredericksburg, Pamela Powers, Centerville; many devoted and special friends. Patrick Cabell of Albuquerque, N.M.; three cousins, Mrs. Boyd Tucker and Bettie Cabell, both of Lovingston and Robert Self of War Minister. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the graveside at Edgewood with the Rev. John Gordon officiating. Janie Coleman Chernault
APPOMATTOX - Janie Coleman Chernault, 102, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Appomattox Health Care Center. She was the widow of Jessie J. Chernault. Born in Appomattox County, August 6, 1896, she was the daughter of the late Tyler and Sallie Garrett Coleman. She was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Henry T. Chernault and his wife Lavonne of Pamplin, Clark Chernault of Appomattox; six daughters, Edna Anderson of Appomattox, Maude Craddock and her husband George of Lynchburg, Sally Mottley and her husband Gene of Farmville, Evelyn McCormick and her husband Curtis of Lynchburg, Jeannette Burge of Lynchburg and Wanda Hamlett and her husband Lindy of Farmville; 28 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a special friend, Audrey Waldo. She was preceded in death by four sons, Walter, Russell, Robert H. and Jimmy Chernault; one daughter, Ethel McMinn and one granddaughter, Robin Burge. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. James Bunce and the Rev. Steve Tyree. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the homes of her children.

Edith Dodson Cunningham
Edith Dodson Cunningham, 87, of 516 Horseman Drive died Saturday, March 13, 1999. Born in Nathalie on Jan. 3, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Noel Osman Dodson and Lillie Blanche Hardy Dodson and was the widow of Herbert M. Cunningham. Mrs. Cunningham attended Longwood College in Farmville and the Virginia Baptist School of nursing. She was a long time employee of Leggetts Department Store. A former member of Catawba Baptist Church, Nathalie, and a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, the Joy Group and the Evening Circle. She was also a member of The Extension Homemakers Club, The Loyal Club and the Fort Hill Woman’s Club. She is survived by her niece, Annie Bob Read and her husband Lee A. of Lynchburg; two great nephews; Rick Read and David Read; and a beloved friend, Harry Miller. She was preceded in death by her brother, Noel Osman Dodson, Jr. who died in action during WWII. A funeral service will be conducted 12 p.m. Monday in Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. John Thompson officiating. Interment will take place at 2:30 p.m. in the Catawba Baptist Church Cemetery, Nathalie with the Rev. Ed. Griffin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Margaret Steele Hawkins
Margaret Steele Hawkins, 44, of Lynchburg died Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at her home. Mrs. Hawkins was born Aug. 14, 1954 in Coco Beach, Fla., the daughter of James W. Steele and Frances W. Steele. She graduated from Brookville High School in 1972 as valedictorian. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her four sons, Christopher McCrady and his wife Allison of Warner Robins, Ga., Jeffrey Lee McCrady of Biloxi, Miss., Clifford Paul McCrady and Richard Allen McCrady both of Jennings, Fla.; a devoted friend Richard P. McCrady of Jennings, Fla.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Martha and Bill Walker of Charlottesville, Susan and Bud Oxner of Amherst and Debra and Duane Hamlet of Appomattox; a brother, William Stratton Steele of Amherst; twin granddaughters, McKynzie McCrady and Riley McCrady of Warner Robins, Ga.; a grandmother Alice G. Steele of Rustburg, and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, March 15, 1999 in the Woodall-Tharp Chapel with the Rev. Steve Bird officiating. Elizabeth (Betty) Thompson Hoback
Elizabeth (Betty) Thompson Hoback of Roanoke, passed away Friday, March 12, 1999. She was the daughter of the late Samuel T. Thompson and Laura Watkins Thompson of Rustburg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold N. Hoback and brother, S. James Thompson Jr. of Lynchburg. Mrs. Hoback was a graduate of Mary Washington College and the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She taught at Roanoke Memorial School of Nursing and was a strong supporter of Center in the Square and of the Children’s Medical Center of Community Hospital where she served as a volunteer. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Christi H. and Charles M. Crutchfield; a son and daughter-in-law, H. David and Marie B. Hoback all of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Laura Elizabeth Crutchfield, Samantha Christian Hoback, Macie Elizabeth Hoback; brothers, Stephen L. Thompson, M.D. of Rustburg, Colonel Robert A. Thompson, Retired of San Antonio, Texas; sister-in-law, Mrs. Dean H. Young and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at her home. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 15, 1999 at the Northminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David A. Kirk officiating. Dora Mays Paige
Mrs. Dora Mays Paige of 244 Woody’s Lake Road, Madison Heights, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Amherst County, she was the daughter of John Smith, Sr. and the late Mrs. Geraldine Mays Thomas. She was a member of Scott Zion Baptist Church. In addition to her father, she is survived by three sons, Doniel Paige and Jeffrey Paige, both of Lynchburg, and Chrisean Paige of Madison Heights; five brothers, Phillip Leon Thomas of Washington, D.C., Dwight Thomas of Amherst, Allen Thomas of Lynchburg, John T. Smith of Alexandria, and Danny Smith of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Mrs. Claudette Baldwin of Lynchburg and Mrs. Percy Boyd of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends. W. Page Powers
W. Page Powers, 76, of Bedford, died Saturday, March 13, 1999 at his residence on Old Lynchburg Salem Turnpike. He was born in Bedford County on March 8, 1923, a son of the late Piercy Page Powers and Nannie Shepherd Powers. He was a Army veteran serving in World War II and he retired as First Sergeant from the Virginia National Guard Company A, 116th Infantry, 29th Division. Page was retired from the Elks National Home with over 34 years of service. He was a longtime member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church, the VFW Peaks of Otter Post #2157, the BPOE Elks Lodge #321, a charter member of the Blue Ridge Chitterling Club and a member of the 29th Division Association. Page was also a proud member of the Bedford High School football squad, “The Otters” from 1938 to 1941. He was an avid quail hunter and fisherman. Page is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marie Burnette Powers; his son, William Burnette Powers and his wife Martha of Farmville; his brother, Thomas Frederick “Fred” Powers both of Farmville; his nieces, Cynthia Powers, Richmond; Cecilia Janney, Fredericksburg, Pamela Powers, Centerville; many devoted and special friends. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 15, 1999 at Bedford Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joseph S. Gaston and the Rev. Francis B. Avery, Jr. officiating. Rucker (Juanita) of Upper Marlboro, Md.; two step sons, Theodore Sanchious, Roy Brown both of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Henry Rucker (Pearline), Aaron Rucker (Edith) both of Evington; one sister, Ms. Anna Allen of Evington; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the late Mrs. Thelma Clark Rucker; two sons, Collie Rucker and Phillip Rucker; and a daughter, Mrs. Lindell Rucker James. Joyce F. Jones Morris Sousi, 43, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Amherst, departed this life after a brief illness on March 10, 1999 at Virginia Baptist. Born in Charlottesville on November 27, 1955 to Robert and Annie F. Jones and was the wife of Samiral Sousi. She leaves to cherish her memories a daughter, Cameshia Morris; three sons, Jeffrey, Daniel, and Michael Morris of Amherst; six sisters, Barbara Morgan and her husband, Rev. Glenwood Morgan, Amherst, Shelia Jones, Washington, D.C., Mary Cardwell, Boston, Mass., Linda Marion and her husband Dennis, Baltimore, Md., Brenda Johnson and her husband Larosa, Jacksonville, N.C., Doris Jones, Lynchburg; four brothers, Leon Jones and his wife Yvonne, Laurel, Md., James Jones, Amherst, David Jones, Rustburg, Frank Jones and his wife, Frances of Hurt. She is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Her remains rest at Winfree-Wright Funeral Service, Inc., 162 Depot, Amherst. A funeral service is scheduled for Monday a 1 p.m. at St. Peter Baptist Church. Her remains will lie in state one hour prior to service scheduled time. The Rev. Glenwood Morgan will officiate and the Rev. Sarah Carter will be the Eulogist. Interment will be in the family cemetery located at the residence of her parents on Boxwood Farm Road. Douglas Wayne Watson, 37, of Route 2, Lynchburg, died Friday, March 12, 1999 in Campbell County. Born May 2, 1961 in Martinsville, he was a son of Lee Clyde Watson and Mona Baxter Brooks and her husband, Ronald Brooks, of Lynchburg. He was the grandson of Imogene P. Baxter of West Jefferson, N.C. and the late Hugh F. Baxter. He is also survived by four sons, Douglas Tyler Watson of Sanville, Chase Dwayne Watson of Bassett, Travis James Koester of Sanville, and John D. Pagan of Ridgeway; and one brother, Michael Leslie Bowles of Anderson, S.C. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Finch & Finch Chapel, Altavista.
