Mr. Homer Lee Chryssikos, 70, of Fredericksburg, passed away Friday, March 26, 1999 at his home. He was a native of Bedford. He received a B.S. in Civil Engineering at The Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1950B. In 1991, he retired as the District Engineer/Administration of the VA Department of Transportation’s Fredericksburg District with 41 years of service. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 48 years, Nell Ketron Chryssikos; two daughters, Ann C. McBroom of Fredericksburg and Lee C. Cole of Salem and their husbands, Kerry J. McBroom Jr. and Scot W. Cole; grandsons, Kerry J. McBroom III, Connor W. McBroom and granddaughters, Emily S. Cole and Allison L. Cole; one brother, Lewis J. Chryssikos of Bedford and one sister, Georgia C. Witt of Locust Grove. Mr. Crews was born in Halifax County, March 4, 1939, son of the late William Abe Crews and Lillian Adams Crews. He was a member of Buffalo Baptist Church and a farmer. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Ronald Wayne Crews Jr. of Long Island; one brother, John Irvin Crews of Long Island. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Franklin Crews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 1999 at Henderson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Shelton Miles with burial to follow in Wickliffe Cemetery. Roosevelt (Dee) Culpepper of 1300 Wise Street, departed this life Thursday, March 25, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital from cancer. He was born in Lynchburg, Sept. 13, 1939, the son of Mrs. Agnes Culpepper Witcher and the late Roosevelt Culpepper. He was a former employee of Lynchburg Public Works for many years. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his daughters, Lisa C. Beverley and her husband, Kenneth, Veronica Spinner and Sandra Culpepper; his brother, Glenn Culpepper; his sisters, Bernice and Betty; his stepsister, Sylvia Payne; his former wife, Mary Scott Culpepper, three grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday at Community Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Artemus Dixon officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Burial Park. Robert Lee Bryant, 66, of 101 Winding Cedar Way, died Thursday, March 25, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Louise Maddox Bryant. Born in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Clarence Wilson Bryant and Florence Johnson Bryant Coleman. Mr. Bryant was a graduate of Roanoke Bible College in Elizabeth City, N.C., a member of Lynchburg Church of Christ and served as the minister of several Church of Christ congregations in Va. and N.C. He was also a 17 year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. Reserves. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Brenda B. Maddox and her husband, Ronnie of Lynchburg, Robert N. Bryant and his wife, Gloria of Elizabeth City, N.C., Steven L. Bryant and his wife, Donna of Lawrenceville, Ga., Keith Bryant and his wife, Fran of Vinton, Jonathan Bryant and his wife, Shanna of Lynchburg, Kevin Bryant of Lynchburg and Christopher P. Bryant and his wife, Tara of Hampton Sidney; one brother, Clarence W. Winfred Henkle Sensabaugh, 81, of Madison Heights, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Marjorie Dunlavy Sensabaugh. Born Aug. 23, 1917 in Rockbridge County, he was the son of the late Walter B. and Myrtle Sensabaugh. He was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center with 29 years of service and was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, Mr. Sensabaugh is survived by a sister, Martha Gregory of Waynesboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. Gary Moore. FOREST CITY, N.C. — Mrs. Geneva Figgers Sorrells, 55, of 357 Elizabeth Avenue, Forest City, N.C., formerly of Va., died Thursday at Rutherford Hospital. A native of Amherst County, a daughter of Rev. Frank Howard Figgers Sr. of Vesuvius and the late Ethel Byers Figgers, wife of Lester Sorrells, lifetime member of Oronoco Church of the Brethren, Columbus, N.C. for the past 10 years and she was employed by Reeves Brothers, Inc., Rutherfordton, N.C. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Jeffrey S. Sorrells of Forest City, N.C.; a daughter, Mrs. Tamyra S. Vest and son-in-law, Tim Vest of South Boston; three brothers, Frank H. Figgers Jr. of Troutville, Fred E. Figgers of Greensboro, N.C. and Ralph D. Figgers of Arlington and a sister, Mrs. Gayle F. Tolley of Natural Bridge; a stepbrother, David Bradby of Buena Vista and Mrs. Martha Ann Ramsey of Vesuvius. There are also four grandsons. AMHERST — Gloria Louise (Jackie) Sullivan, 69, of Rt. 3, Amherst, died Friday morning, March 26, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief illness. Jackie was born April 5, 1929 in Chesterfield County, a daughter of the late John Merritt and Cecile Spain Merritt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth M. Sullivan on Dec. 3, 1991. She was employed as a scale house operator with Greif Brothers at Riverville with over 24 years of service. She is survived by her daughter, Linda C. Nunnally of Birmingham, Ala.; two sons, Stewart P. Sullivan of Bulverde, Texas and Michael S. Sullivan of Madison Heights; two sisters, Edie Goyne and Bunt Frost both of Chester; a granddaughter, Stacy Nunnally of Nashville, Tenn.; a grandson, Sean Sullivan of Bulverde, Texas, one niece and three nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the graveside in the Purvis-King-Sullivan Cemetery in Shipman. Born July 30, 1939 in Campbell County, he was a son of Ella Mae Phelps Cofflin of Gladys and the late Elwood Goodman. Mr. Goodman was employed at the Archer Creek Foundry. Elsie Mae Almond Snow, 91, of 104 Tulane Street, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the widow of John William Snow. Born Oct. 2, 1907 in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late William Oaker Almond and Minnie Wood Almond. Mrs. Snow retired from Craddock-Terry Shoe Co. after 25 years of employment, was a member of the Quarter Century Club and a member of Fairview Christian Church. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. A.C. (La Verne) Snow Tweedy of Rustburg; a son, Johnnie J. Snow and his wife, Shirley of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, John Wayne Tweedy and his wife, Dianne, Ryland Mitchell Tweedy and his wife, Jean, Marc Leland Tweedy and his wife, Gloria, John Gregory Snow and his wife, Sarah, Karen Lynn Hall and her husband, Kevin and 10 great-grandchildren. Born in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late Harry and Haddie Walker and was preceded in death by a son, Travis E. Walker. Mr. Walker was retired from Wilson Heating & Cooling Co., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Langhorne Chapel United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Margaret W. Viar of Roanoke and Thelma W. Hackworth of Lynchburg; and a brother-in-law, Lloyd S. Blankenship of Lynchburg. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 1999 at Spring Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Chuck Schooler. NELLYSFORD — Annie Bell Berry, 90, of Nellysford, died Wednesday morning, March 24, 1999 at her residence. Born May 6, 1908 in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Gray. She was a member of Rockfish Valley Presbyterian Church in Nellysford. She is survived by two daughters, Janice M. Smith and Diane Marie Purvis both of Nellysford; a sister, Hazel Lucado of Ypsilanti, Mich.; one brother, Stuart Gray of Afton; three granddaughters, Norma J. Wade, Linda Smith and Tammy Matheny, four great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. She was preceded in death by six sisters and six brothers. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with interment in the Rockfish Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Nellysford. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel and other times at the family residence. Pallbearers will be Bliss Wade, James Bridgewater, Roger and Kenneth Gray, Harrison Smith Jr., Thomas Clark, Robert Stokes and Cecil Truslow. Honorary pallbearers will be friends of the family.

Emily Marie Cochran
Emily Marie Cochran, a longtime Hamden, Conn. resident and widow of J. Rowland Cochran, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at age 90. She had been annoyed by poor health for some time. Mrs. Cochran was an artist, particularly known for her legendary greeting cards. She studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts and the Newark School of Fine Arts, was a past president of the Brush & Palette Club, served on the board of the New Haven Committee Yale University Art Gallery Associates, was a lifetime member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut and was an officer and leading member of the Spring Glen Garden Club. During her tenure as president of the Brush & Palette Club she inaugurated the highly successful “Collectors’ Market” at the John Slade Ely House. She lectured on flower arranging and the glory of guide dogs. Her guide dog, Ali, was her constant companion for the last 10 years. Always full of ideas and committed to making life more beautiful, more interesting or more fun, Mrs. Cochran volunteered her artistic talents for civic beautification projects as well as social and cultural ones. She was a member of the P.E.O. sisterhood, the New Haven Country Club and a former member of the Madison Beach Club and High Lane Club. Mrs. Cochran is survived by her two daughters and their husbands, Suzanne and Michael Maney of New York City and Madison, Conn. and Linda and E. Allen Womack Jr. of Lynchburg; three granddaughters, Connie Womack Britton, Cynthia Womack David (and her husband, Christopher) and Michele Maney and a great-grandson, Matthew Allen David. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 1999 at the Spring Glen Church, 20 Glen Parkway (at Whitney Avenue), Hamden, Conn. She was born in Charlotte County, Oct. 30, 1916, daughter of the late James W. Garrison and Ellie Baldwin Garrison. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She is survived by three sons, Sandy A. Garrett Jr. of Lynchburg, James R. Garrett of Madison Heights and Horace L. Garrett of Lynchburg. Virginia Johnson Hendricks, 68, of 1740 Texas Avenue, died Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of Henry Lewis Hendricks. Born in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late George Johnson and Sadie Tanner Johnson Silby. Mrs. Hendricks is survived by her children, Wanda Kay Hendricks, Linda Gayle Hendricks, Henry Lewis Hendricks II and Charles Thomas Hendricks all of Lynchburg; a brother, Melvin Johnson of Lynchburg; a half brother, Wesley Silby of Lynchburg; a half sister, Louise Silby of Roanoke and two grandchildren, Jimmy Wayne and Derick Neil Hendricks both of Lynchburg. Capt. James Monroe Hingson USN (Ret.)
James Monroe Hingson, 83, of Lynchburg and formerly of McLean, died Monday, March 22, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Josephine Ellen Hingson. Born in Oxford, Ala., June 18, 1915, he was a son of the late Robert Andrew Hingson and Eloree Haynes Hingson. Capt. Hingson was a 1939 graduate of the US Naval Academy and was a survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor in Dec. 1941. Upon the declaration of war, he volunteered for the “Silent Service” (submarine duty) and remained on active duty for 30 years. Capt. Hingson served as Commodore of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean from 1963 to 1965 and retired from the Navy in 1969. He was a long time member of McLean Baptist Church and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Jory Hingson Fisher and her husband, David of Lynchburg and one son, Curtis O. Hingson of Jacksonville, Fla. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Rebecca, Brett and Jana Beeson, Brooks and Lisa Hingson and Katherine, Amanda, Elizabeth and Benjamin Fisher. Earl Foster Harvey, 83, of Whissen Street, Edinburg, passed away Sunday evening at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital. He was born in Alexandria, Aug. 19, 1915, a son of the late Leonard F. and Margaret Gaines Harvey. Margaret Avery Ringle Struble, 91, of 501 VES Road, died Saturday, March 20, 1999 in Drinkard Health Care Center. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Duval Ringle; a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy and her second husband, Arthur D. Struble, a Vice Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Mrs. Struble was very active in The Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, New Iberia, La., where she served on the church vestry and also founded the Brown Bag Program. Elenora Esther Odrlin, 74, of Amherst, died Saturday, March 20, 1999 at her residence. Born in Lead, S.D., April 21, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Leslie Cox and Mary Persoma Cox. Mrs. Odrlin was a retired sale associate of Bradley’s Department Store. Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, John Joseph Odrlin; three daughters, Sharon L. DeBilzan, of Arrington, Mary Lou Gramesty, of Westhaven, Conn, JoAnne Lochow, of Palos Park, Ill.; a brother, John Cox of Rapid City, S.D.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. RUSTBURG - Wilmouth Rein (Pete) Overstreet, 68, of Mountain Lane, died Saturday morning, March 20, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Shirley Gillespie Overstreet. Mr. Overstreet was born in Charlotte County, April 24, 1930, son of the late Audrey W. Overstreet and Lizzie Hamlet Overstreet. He was of the Methodist faith, U.S. Army Veteran, member of the Rustburg VFW and a retired superintendent of the Virginia Dept. of Transportation Rustburg area headquarters. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son—law, Tammy and Ken Elder of Brookneal; one grandson, Chris Elder of Brookneal; two brothers, Ronald N. Overstreet of Alexandria, Carroll C. Overstreet of Pennsville, N.J.; five sisters, Thelma O. Mason of Rustburg, Iris D. McAllister of Hamden-Sydney, Becky O. Borders of Pennsville, N.J., Brenda O. Green of Phenix, Nancy O. Khaln of Spring Lake, N.Y.; also a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Overstreet and Julian Overstreet. Roberta Ayscue, 71, of 147 Howard Street died Saturday morning, March 20, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of Russell Lee Ayscue, Sr. for 43 years. Mrs. Ayscue was born November 23, 1927 in Goochland County, a daughter of the late John Guerrant and the late Jennie Nicholas Guerrant. She graduated from Virginia Baptist School of Nursing in 1956 and was a registered nurse with Virginia Baptist Hospital. She also was a consultant coordinator for the Friends Bible Coffee of the Christian Womens Club and a member of North Bedford Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Russell and Kim Ayscue of Lynchburg; sisters, Adelle Francisco of Powhatan, County, Dorothy Dickinson of Charlotte, N.C.; a grandson, Russell Lee Ayscue, III, and several nieces and nephews. Beemer was born Oct. 6, 1911, in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late Charles Edward Judson Beemer and the late Gladys Goff Beemer. Ret. Sgt. Henry B. Camm Jr.
Ret. Sgt. Henry B. Camm Jr., 44, of Killeen, Texas, departed this life Monday, March 15, 1999 at a Temple hospital. He was born July 2, 1954 in Lynchburg, the son of Mrs. Jeanette Camm and the late Henry Benjamin Camm Sr. and he was the husband of Mrs. Cynthia Camm. Camm lived in Killeen, Texas area for 13 years. He worked as a counselor at Cedar Crest Hospital in Belton. He retired from the U.S. Army with 15 years of service, during which time he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon Driver and Mechanic Badge and Expert Rifle Badge. He served as Tiler for Jno G. Lewis Lodge No. 622, a member of Mount Sinai Chapter No. 42, the treasurer for South Central Texas Commandery No. 37 and the commander-in-chief of Central Texas Consistory No. 306 from 1995 to 1996. He was elevated to Grand inspector General of the 33rd Degree of the Scottish Rite in Oct., 1996, the highest honor in the organization. He most recently served as Illustrious Potentate of Nubia Temple 191. Camm was a member of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order of the Nobles of Mystic Shrine, which awarded him the Legion of Honor award. He was a member of the Harge Commander of the Rite. He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9191 and Disabled American Veterans. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by four sons, D’Havelon Cardwell of Roanoke, Naamdi Camm of Fort Bragg, N.C., Dexter Lee and Robert Williams both of Killeen, Texas; a brother, James E. Camm of Fairbanks, Alaska; three sisters, Deborah Ware of Madison Heights, Margie E.C. Jones of Virginia Beach and Angelia Crummie of Fort Campbell, Ky. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at White Rock Baptist Church with the Rev. James Cobbs officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Burial Park. His remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Robert C. Scott
Robert C. Scott, 70, died of heart failure at Lahey Clinic, Burlington, Mass. on Sunday, March 14, 1999. He was the son of Anna Frances Deane and the late Robert Clark Scott. Born in Lynchburg, he attended Virginia Episcopal School and received a chemical engineering degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was a field engineer with the DuPont Company and served two years as a process design engineer with the Army Chemical Corp. For over 25 years he was associated with the Eddy-Rucker-Nichols Company in Cambridge, Mass., which specialized in incentive programs for manufacturing firms in the U.S. and Eastern Canada. He then formed Gainsharing, Inc., a management consulting company in Lexington, Mass. and was a senior specialist for H. B. Maynard and Company, Inc. in Hartford, Conn. In recent years he was active in the Lexington Senior Center programs where he enjoyed telling stories and cooking an occasional southern style dish for the day care group. He leaves his wife, Sally (Terrell); two sons, J. Terrell Scott of Boulder, Colo; R. Carter Scott and his wife Priscilla of Lexington, Mass.; his mother, Mrs. Robert C. Scott of Lynchburg; his sister, Anna Deane Scott of Brookline, Mass. and three grandchildren, Amber, Shanti and Caleb of Lexington, Mass. A memorial service was held on Friday, March 19th in Lexington. Burial will be in Virginia in the late spring. Evelyn Boley Stone, 90, of Lynchburg died Saturday, March 20, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of Harry Lee Stone. Born in Lynchburg, July 7, 1908, she was a daughter of the late William A. and Bessie Johnson Boley. She was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Boley; and three sisters, Gladys B. Newcomb, Myrtle B. Hyatt and Lois Duff. She was retired from the American Red Cross and a member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. Mrs. Stone is survived by one brother, Kenneth W. Boley; and two sisters, Christine V. Boley and Grace B. Hoover, all of Lynchburg. A graveside funeral service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery with Dr. Nolan Crowder and the Rev. Robert Newcomb officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. Monday at Diuguid Rivermont Chapel. Margaret Lee Peters Wiatt
On Friday, March 19, 1999, Margaret Lee Peters Wiatt passed away at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Hopewell, Va., Christmas Eve, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Harold Marvin Peters and Iva Maude Updike Peters, and the widow of the late Charles Graham Wiatt. She was retired from Old Dominion Box Co. and enjoyed working for Morris Orchard, the American Red Cross, and driving for the Central Virginia Area Agency on Aging. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Carlyle and Russell Peters, and her sister, Virginia Neely. She is survived by two daughters, Diane Thompson and her husband Wendell, Yvonne Falls and her husband, Roger; a son, Graham Lee Wiatt; and one grandson, Charles Lucas Wiatt. A memorial service will beheld on March 28, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Bethany United Methodist Church, 732 High Peak Road, Monroe, Va. A reception will follow the service in the church social hall. The family will receive visitors at both daughters’ homes. It was Margaret’s wish that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Bethany United Methodist Church.

Thomas William Zimmerman, Sr.
Thomas William Zimmerman, Sr., 54, of Lynchburg died Friday, March 19, 1999 in McGuire Va. Hospital, Richmond. Born in Maryland, March 26, 1944, he was a son of Frances Love Zimmerman of Franklin, Va. and the late George L. Zimmerman. He was a retired manager of G. C. Murphy and an U.S. Air Force Veteran. In addition to his mother, he is survived by a daughter Angela D. Zimmerman; two sons, Andrew D. Zimmerman; Thomas W. Zimmerman, II all of Lynchburg; a brother, Fred Zimmerman of Youngwood, Pa.; a sister, Nancy Hamilton of Franklin; a fiancee, Nancy Mann; and a granddaughter, Alison Zimmerman. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. today by the Rev. Gene McNutt officiating in the Heritage Funeral Service and Crematory Chapel, 427 Graves Mill Road, 239-2405, with visitation to follow.
