Helen McGuire Connelly Carwile, 86, of 368 Amelon Road, Madison Heights, died Thursday, April 1, 1999 at her residence. Twice married, her first husband was Earl T. Connelly. She was the wife of M.D. “Screechy” Carwile. Born April 19, 1912 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Harry Nathaniel McGuire and Nomecha Johnson McGuire. She was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by one brother, H.N. McGuire Jr. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Phyllis C. Vassar, Shirley C. Caskie and Audrey C. Pritchett; two grandchildren, David Vassar and his wife, Laura and Dianne Vassar; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Andrew Vassar and John Rose Metz; two sisters, Hilda M. Guill and Dorothy M. Campbell and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Helen had a God given talent for the piano, at 15 years of age she started her music ministry playing for 1st Baptist Church of Monroe. She continued her ministry of music for 71 years playing at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church, West View Baptist Church, all the nursing homes in the area as well as special activities. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Randolph Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. L. Grant Carter, the Rev. Eugene Campbell and the Rev. John D. Ragland. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Whitten Monelison Chapel and other times at the home of her daughter, Shirley C. Caskie, 2501 Link Road, Lynchburg. The family suggests memorials be made to the Monelison Rescue Squad, Randolph Memorial Baptist Church or West View Baptist Church.

VERNON HILL — Troy Wade Davis, 62, of 12157 Mountain Road, died Thursday afternoon, April 1, 1999 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was the husband of Betty Hamlett Davis. Mr. Davis was born in Lunenburg County, Oct. 6, 1936, son of the late James Henry Davis and Mattie Perkins Davis. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and a former member of the Chesapeake Gun Club. He was a retired yard master for the Norfolk and Southern Railway. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one brother, James Everette Davis of Drakes Branch; one sister, Evelyn Davis Kittrell of Tacoma, Wash.; a number of nieces and nephews and faithful companions, Thunder, Lighting, Dakota and Big Foot. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 5, 1999 at the old Ferrell Farm in Oak Level by the Rev. Bill Wilkins and the Rev. Dr. Glen W. Small. (casual dress). Mary Alice Michael
Mary Alice Michael, 43, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, April 1, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital. A beautiful loving, kind and gentle soul was given by birth to mother Sallie Holbein on Jan. 25, 1956. She was carried in the Arms of the Angels back to her Heavenly Father on April 1, 1999. Family and friends remained by her side as she was escorted to her heavenly father and departed family. Surviving her are two daughters, Develyn, 11 years and Hally Michael, four years old. She is also survived by two brothers, Leroy M. Legg Jr. and Henry R. Nelson II of Lynchburg; two sisters, Cynthia A. Nelson of Columbus, Ohio and Evelyn Riffle of Pittsburgh, Pa.; her mother, Sallie Holbein of Halifax; her grandparents, Albert S. and Mary J. Holbein of Columbus, Ohio; her aunt, Evelyn Locklin of Columbus, Ohio and uncle, Albert S. Holbein Jr. of Chandler, Ariz. and a significant other, Jimmy (Red) Evans. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. today at Fairview United Methodist Church on Campbell Avenue with the Rev. Russell Ashby Templeton, 79, of 2960 Trents Ferry Road, died March 31, 1999 at his home. He was the loving husband of Barbara Lee Hatter Templeton for 49 years. Mr. Templeton was born April 11, 1919 in Bedford County, a son of the late Raleigh Robert Templeton and the late Mary Lee Dillard Templeton. He was the founder and owner of R. Ashby Templeton Inc., a member of Boonsboro United Methodist Church, Boonsboro Ruritan Club and a charter member of Boonsboro Volunteer Fire Department. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons and their wives, Gary W. and Donna D. Templeton of Forest, Michael A. and Diane L. Templeton of Amherst, Darrell T. and Lori A. Templeton of Lynchburg; a daughter and her husband, Sharon T. and C. Barry Hall of Forest; a sister, Ruby T. Ammon “Ben” Benjamin Tucker, 69, of Route 3, Rustburg, died Friday, April 2, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of Evelyn Elliott Tucker. Mr. Tucker was born March 3, 1930 in Evington, the son of the late Ammon Tucker and the late Blanche Lemon Tucker. He was a Korean War veteran and was a supervisor at Winebarger Furniture Co. for 33 years. After retirement from Winebarger, he worked at Adjustable Steel. He was a member of Meade Memorial Methodist Church. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 16, the Moose Lodge and the Rustburg Ruritans. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Kevin Benjamin Tucker of Rustburg, Mark Jeffrey Tucker of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; three stepchildren, Josephine Graybill Wells of Rustburg, Joseph Robert Graybill of Madison Heights, Roger Wayne Graybill of Forest; six grandchildren, Amy Sue Tucker of Rustburg, Ryan E. Willie Woodall Booth, 91, of the Jefferson House, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 1999 after a long illness in The Carrington in Lynchburg. Born June 25, 1907, she was a daughter of the late William W. and Alice M. Woodall and was the widow of Justus Booth. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Booth Harris, two granddaughters, four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Jean Booth Wright; her sister, Georgia W. Carwile; her brother, Wilson E. Woodall and his wife, Evelyn, seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Diuguid Waterlick Chapel with the Rev. Charles Harbin officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Anne Stice Harper, 46, of Monroe, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of William N. Harper. Anne was born Aug. 21, 1952 in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of George Stevens and Mildred Stice. She was an employee of Greater Lynchburg Habitat for Humanity. In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by one son, Shiloh Schmelz of Madison Heights; one daughter, Kaili Schmelz of Monroe; two granddaughters, Sahara Schmelz and Heather Schmelz of Madison Heights and two stepdaughters, Windy Harper-Moore of Madison Heights and Erin Noel Harper of Monroe. Jerome A. Hester
Jerome A. Hester was born in Mecklenburg County on Feb. 20, 1951 to John and Doris Hester. In his youth, he was baptized into the family of God and joined the St. Matthew Baptist Church. He affiliated with the church school, the choir and the Trustee Board and served as church treasurer for a number of years. He died at 4:45 a.m., March 30, 1999 surrounded by loved ones at Healthsouth Medical Center, Richmond. Jerome’s educational pursuits, beyond the public school system took him to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & University, where he distinguished himself as Chair of Student Affairs Committee for the College of Ed., member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, and Editor of the Ag. Ed. Journal. Jerome earned both the Bachelor and Master of Science degrees there. Jerome’s work experiences were Instructor, Agriculture Education, Vice President and Manager, Central Fidelity Bank, Senior Vice President and Group Manager for Central Fidelity and Finally, Senior Lending Officer - Mortgage Banker for GMAC Mortgage. Along the way, he earned Advanced and Graduate Certificates in Bank Management and became an instructor in area community colleges and banking firms. His affiliations have included VA - FFA Foundation Inc., Board of Trustees, American Institute of Banking, Outstanding Young Men of America, American Red Cross, Board of Directors, Lynchburg Chapter, Alpha Tau Alpha, Alpha Lambda, Teachers of Teachers, Bronze Award, President, United Way of Farmville, Farmville Chamber of Commerce, VP Habitat for Humanity, President, Anne Spencer Foundation, Rotary Club, STEPS Inc., Farmville Jaycees, Junior Achievement Advisor, Keysville Center Trustee Board, VP Bluestone - Harmony Convention, President Liberty Church-School Union, President, Mecklenburg Education Association. Jerome was united in holy matrimony on March 22, 1986 to Shaun Spencer. To this union was born Jordan Alexander their only offspring. He will be missed as an exemplary husband, father, son, brother and friend by his devoted wife, Shaun; his son, Jordan; his parents, John and Doris; his brother, John Jr., six uncles, one aunt, his father and mother-in-law, Chauncey and Anne Spencer, three sisters-in-law, two brothers-in-law, numerous cousins, other relatives and a world of friends. Jerome’s strong work-ethic was matched only by his unfailing faith in God, which he never relinquished. His favorite out-of-town outing was the Lott Carey Missionary Convention and “Preaching At Its Best”. His daily bible reading always included Psalm 27. “As we asunder part, it gives us inward pain, but we shall still be joined in heart and hope to meet again.” Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 1999 at St. Matthew Baptist Church, Highway 49 North at 701, Clarksville. Mrs. Mary Lee West Hudgins, 75, of Stuart, died Wednesday morning at Patrick Community Hospital in Stuart. Mrs. Hudgins was born May 19, 1923 in Stuart to the late John Jefferson and Louise Coles West. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a brother, Edward West, Mrs. Hudgins, attended Farmville State Teachers College and was retired from the Patrick County Department of Social Services. Mrs. Hudgins has been a member of Stuart United Methodist Church for 64 years. Mrs. Hudgins is survived by her husband, Reuben B. “Rube” Hudgins Jr. of the home; five sons, John Wesley Elder of Fairfax, Douglas Harvey Elder of Forest, Robert Bruce Elder of Tampa, Fla., Lee Wren Hudgins of Stuart and Reuben B. “Boaty” Hudgins III of Stuart; six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Ann Hale of Stuart; two brothers, John Douglas West of Clarksville and William Jefferson “Bill” West of Altavista. BROOKNEAL — Richard Douglass Williams Jr., 91, of 305 Virginia Avenue, died Thursday morning, April 1, 1999. He was the husband of Elizabeth Hackney Baskervill Williams. Mr. Williams was born in Brookneal, Oct. 19, 1907, son of the late Richard Douglass Williams Sr. and Louise Monroe Williams. He was a member of Brookneal Presbyterian Church where he was active for many years. He attended the Virginia Military Institute. Mr. Williams was owner and operator of R.D. Williams Tobacco Co., R.D. Williams Insurance Agency and co-owner of Williams Lumber Co. for many years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Richard Douglass Williams III of Moreland, Ga.; two daughters, Elizabeth Williams Hoover of Cape Charles, Dabney Williams Allingham of Victoria, British Columbia; four stepchildren, William R. Baskervill of Wilson, N.C., Evelyn Baskervill of Wilson, N.C., Elizabeth B. Goodman of Franklin, Tenn., Harriett T. Dorothy Bell Mayberry Brooks Witt, 88, of Lynchburg, died Thursday, April 1, 1999. She was the wife of the late William Emmitt Brooks and the late William Howard Witt. Born May 30, 1910 in Lynchburg, she was a daughter of the late John Dudley Mayberry and Susan Davis Mayberry. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. Mrs. Witt was a member of Fairview Christian Church where she was a member of the Sunshine Bible Class. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter William Mayberry and Frank Carrington Mayberry and one sister, Irene Mayberry Page. Mrs. Witt is survived by one daughter, Naomi Vine Brooks Smith and her husband, Tommy of Lynchburg; one granddaughter, Angela Smith Price and her husband, Steve of Rustburg; one grandson, Anthony Vern Smith and his wife, Sharon of Lynchburg; two great-grandsons, James Stephen Price and Eric Thomasson Price both of Rustburg. She is survived by five sons, Lawrence Cook and his wife, Joann of Rustburg, Donnell Cook and his wife, Ann of Hurt, Lonnell Cook of Hurt, Willie Lee Cook of Halifax County and Larry Cook of the residence; two sisters, Mrs. Betty Whitfield of Hurt, Miss Brenda Cook of Halifax County; a devoted niece, Miss Evanette Cook of Lynchburg; two brothers-in-law, Curtis Whitfield and Russell Hunt of Hurt; nine grandchildren, four step grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one aunt, Mrs. Anna Monroe of Lynch Station and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Emma Jane Ebright Link died March 29, 1999, at the Carrington. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Sept. 27, 1911. Since coming to this area in 1985 from Delanco, N.J., she lived in Lake Vista and at Valley View Retirement Community. She is survived by her daughter, Carole Link Rodman of Forest; her grandson, Douglas Blinn Rodman, granddaughter, Wendy Rodman Doyle and husband, Kevin, a great-granddaughter, Jamie Braxton Doyle, all of Richmond; a sister, Mary Alberta Yerger of Millersberg, Pa., and two nephews. Emma served as a volunteer at Poplar Forest. She was employed for many years as deputy tax collector of Riverside, N.J. She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Link; her son-in-law, James B. Rodman Jr.; and grandson, James Blair Rodman III (Jamie). Dr. J. Charlotte (Dews) Rhodes, 64, of Bowling Green, formerly of Gladys, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, March 28, 1999 at her residence after a brief illness. She was the wife of Carlton Bernard Rhodes Sr. of the residence and formerly of Lynch Station. Born in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late Lindsey Dews and Beulah Freeman Dews. She joined Spotswood Chapel Holiness Church at an early age and later joined Zion Grove Church in Bowling Green. Known to all as “Big Baby”, she was a loving and kind homemaker and will be sorrowfully missed by her children, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Gloria Rhodes and Sherry R. Samuel; two sons, Carlton Bernard Jr. (CB) and Wilburn (Wimpy) Rhodes; a son-in-law, Herman Samuel; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild all of Bowling Green; four sisters, Cleta D. She was retired from Wilco Uniform Company and was a faithful member of Oakdale Baptist Church. She was the wife of the late Harry Allen Dowdy. She was the loving mother of two children and their spouses, her son, Dale Allen Dowdy Sr. and his wife, Darlene; her daughter, Doris Lee and her husband, Lloyd Lee all of Madison Heights. James R. Gorman Jr.
James Raymond Gorman Jr. of Wellesley, Mass., died March 15, 1999 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was 73. Born in Lynchburg, he was the son of the late James R. Gorman, M.D. and Mary W. (Ferguson) Gorman. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg and from Babson College in 1959. Mr. Gorman was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. A longtime resident of Wellesley, Mass., Mr. Gorman had a summer home in Sackets Harbor, N.Y. He was a member of the Old Colony Ski Club and the Wellesley Sailing Club. Mr. Gorman has been employed by Honeywell Inc. as a computer programmer. She was born Feb. 20, 1904 in Clinton, Missouri, the daughter of the late George Drake Coon and Cora Ella Rosebrough Coon. She was a retired Realtor, a member of the University of Missouri Alumni Association, Pewter Collector’s Club of America, Society of Mayflower Descendants, Daughters of American Revolution, Blue Ridge Chapter and serving as Past Regent in Illinois and Virginia and a member of The Pilgrim Edward Doty Society. Audrey F. Millner
Audrey F. Millner of Franklin Place, Chatham, died March 28, 1999. She was born in Bassett, Nov. 11, 1932 and was the daughter of Hobart D. and Zella L. Frazier. In 1959 she was married to H. Victor Millner Jr. who survives. She was recently honored as Citizen of the Year for Pittsylvania County. Her professional career ended in Dec. 1998 when she retired as Executive Director of the Pittsylvania Economic Development Organization (PEDO), an organization which was founded under her guidance and which she directed for 15 years. Mrs. Millner had previously served as Executive Director of the Chatham Chamber of Commerce and under her direction it was merged with other local chambers into the Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce of which she served as Executive Director until it was separated from PEDO in 1989. Mrs. Millner held a Bachelor’s Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master’s Degree from the University of Virginia. She founded the Adult Education Program for the Pittsylvania County Public School System. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chatham. Mrs. Millner served on the Board of Directors of Hughes Memorial Home, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts & History, and was, at her death, a member of the initial Board of the DPC Community Foundation. In addition to her husband of the home, she is survived by her mother, Zella L. Frazier of Chatham; a daughter, Elizabeth Frazier Millner of Mattaponi; a son, H. Victor Millner III of Charlottesville and a son, James R. Millner II of Washington, D.C. and three grandchildren, Evan Daniel Millner, Katherine Anderson Millner and Margaret Spotswood Millner all of Charlottesville. She taught English and French at Mansfield High School until her retirement. She belonged to the Pa. Association of School Retirees. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Mansfield. Surviving are two sisters, Jane Conson of Wellsboro and Mary McClanan of Merritt Island, Fla.; sister-in-laws, Amy Wessling of Lewistown, Pa., and Ruby Conson of Lynchburg; three nephews; one niece; three great-nephews; and one great niece. Baldwin Jennings Yewell died March 28, 1999. She had lived at Westminster Canterbury in Lynchburg for the last 18 years. Born in 1905 at Red House in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late Jane Wilkens Smith and Frank Stratton Jennings. Her parents moved to Lynchburg when she was two years old. Mrs. Yewell attended Miss Mason’s School at Tarrytown-on-Hudson, N.Y. In 1926, she married James Arthur Wood of Petersburg. They lived in Washington, D.C. where her husband was an attorney for various federal agencies for many years. He died in 1970. Baldwin Yewell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames, the Kenwood Country Club of Bethesda, Md., and the Boonsboro Country Club of Lynchburg. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Daly Yewell of Westminster Canterbury; two sons, James Arthur Wood, Jr. of North Bethesda, Md., and William Jennings Wood of Santa Barbara, Calif.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cozzens, formerly of Lynchburg and Washington, D.C., died March 20, 1999, in Lakewood, Wash. She was the daughter of the late Theresa Chilton Wallace and Aubrey Wallace. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert N. Keeler. She is survived by one daughter, Kay Keeler Burns and husband Theodore, three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. The family will be at the home of her cousin, Mrs. Ann Newman Murrell in Forest.

Celeste Ivey Edmunds
Celeste Ivey Edmunds, 94, of Lynchburg, died Friday, March 26, 1999. She was the wife of the late Benjamin Prescott Edmunds. Mrs. Edmunds was born in Lynchburg, Dec. 23, 1904, a daughter of the late Edwin Clark Ivey and the late Eleanor Prescott Ivey. She was a long time member of St. Johns Episcopal Church, having been married to Prescott there in 1929. After attending Lynchburg Public schools, she graduated from Hollins College in 1926. Mrs. Edmunds was a former member of the Junior League of Lynchburg, the Lynchburg Garden Club, and Antiquarians Club of Lynchburg. She also belonged to the Lee Society, The Jamestown Society, The Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia and The Order of the Crown in America. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Prescott Edmunds and Harriet Howerton Edmunds of Lynchburg; three grandsons and their wives, Benjamin Prescott Edmunds and Deborah, Paul Carrington Edmunds and Lisa all of Lynchburg, John Page Edmunds and Ellen of Raleigh, N.C. and three great-grandchildren, Celeste Taylor Edmunds, Dustin Kean Edmunds and John Page Edmunds Jr. She was predeceased by a sister, Emma Ivey Barksdale; three brothers, Robert Kean Ivey, William Christopher Ivey II and Edwin Clark Ivey Jr. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, March 29, 1999 at Spring Hill Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Westminster Canterbury Chapel at 11 a.m. with Father Frank Dunn officiating both services. The family will receive friends at the home of Dr. and Mrs. B.P. Edmunds Jr., 1543 Lexington Drive, from 1:30-5 p.m. today. Mrs. Lena T. Euille
Mrs. Lena T. Euille, 95, of 343 Old State Road, Amherst, entered into eternal life Thursday, March 25, 1999 at the Avante Nursing Home. Born in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jennie Tyler. Her husband was the late Luther Euille. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Coolwell. She leaves to cherish her memories a loving and devoted daughter, Ms. Esther E. Rose of Amherst; three devoted nieces, Louise Brown of W.Va., Teresa Hill of Washington, D.C. and Mary Beverly of Amherst; a special friend, Amanda Davis of Lynchburg and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 29, 1999 from the First Baptist Church, Coolwell with the Rev. M.D. Mays officiating. Interment will be in the Briarwood Memorial Gardens. Lelia Hortense “Hortie” Glass
BEDFORD — Lelia Hortense “Hortie” Glass, 81, of Bedford County, died Saturday, March 27, 1999 in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Columbia, S.C., May 1, 1917, a daughter of the late Edward George Daniels and Pauline Nettles Daniels. She lived most of her life in Linden, Ala. and the past several years with her son and daughter-in-law, in Bedford County. She was retired from the City of Linden, Ala. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin H. Glass Sr. “Cuz”; two sisters and one brother. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin and Sue Glass of Bedford and Patrick Glass and Maria Underwood of Atlanta, Ga.; two granddaughters, Morgan Underwood of Atlanta, Ga. and Amy Glass Dullaghan and her husband, Patrick of Mason, Ohio. A funeral service will be conducted at the graveside at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999 at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church Cemetery with the Rev. Louis C. Fischer III officiating. John Hansford Humphreys
On March 27, 1999, John Hansford Humphreys of 489 Amelon Road, Madison Heights, passed peacefully from this earth and entered into the glorious kingdom of God. He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, “Virgie” Virginia Tomlin Humphreys. Born Sept. 26, 1919 in Amherst County, Mr. Humphreys was a son of the late William Edward and Fannie Wilmer Humphreys. He was retired from Bethlehem Steel and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Oronoco Brethren Church, Vesusvius and attended Temple Baptist Church, Madison Heights. In addition to his wife, Mr. Humphreys is survived by his six loving children, Robert Humphreys, Johnnie Humphreys and his wife, Christine and Rachel H. Sowa and her husband, Steven all of Baltimore, Md., Thomas Humphreys and his wife, Liz of Sykesville, Md., Anthony Humphreys and his wife, Deloris of Madison Heights and Timothy Humphreys and his wife, Vickie of Forest; one brother, Archie Humphreys of Madison Heights; one sister, Ruth H. McClung of Spottsylvania, 13 grandchildren, who adored him and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Whitten Monelison Chapel by the Rev. J.D. Surbaugh, the Rev. Earl Clarkson and the Rev. Arnold Bradley. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens, Amherst. Joi Nikia Johnson (Stinka)
Joi Nikia Johnson (Stinka), 12, departed her life Friday, March 26, 1999 at Lynchburg General Hospital after a sudden illness. She leaves to mourn her mother, Lois Johnson Hall; stepfather, Alfred Hall (Bud); one brother, Robert Johnson; one sister, LaToya Johnson and father, Robert Brown and a host of relatives and friends. Joi was a sixth grader at Dunbar Middle School. She was baptized in 1996 and became a member of Rivermont Baptist Church. She was a dedicated participant in the Salvation Army Christian Activities. The family will receive friends at 2007 Main Street. The funeral notice will appear later. Her remains rest at Community Funeral Home.

Miss Elizabeth Rose Miller
ABINGDON — Miss Elizabeth Rose Miller, 58, died Saturday, March 27, 1999 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Forest and had lived most of her life in Forest and Lynchburg. She was a member of the Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church and was a nurse at Lynchburg General Hospital with 23 years of service. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Rubinette Niemann, Abingdon; brother-in-law, John P. Niemann, Abingdon; niece, Mrs. Beth Niemann Starkey, Denver, Colo.; nephew, John W. Niemann, Richmond. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 1999 in the Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, 4460 Fort Avenue with the Rev. Murry Unruh, Pastor Emeritus and Dr. Nolan Crowder, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Forest. BROOKNEAL — Joseph Wayne Powell, 49, of 13916 Red House Road, died Friday afternoon, March 26, 1999. He was the husband of Linda Harris Powell. Mr. Powell was born in Halifax County, Feb. 25, 1950, son of the late Raymond E. Powell and Frances Hudgins Shelton. He was a member of Liberty Congregational Christian Church, a former member of Brookneal Rescue Squad and a employee of Watts Petroleum Corp. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Christopher Powell of Nathalie; one stepson, Sam Smith of Lynchburg; two stepdaughters, Debra Guthrie of Nathalie, Gracie Rice of Gladys; two brothers, Ray Powell of South Boston, Gerald A. Slade of Danville; four sisters, Betty Greer of Raleigh, N.C., Faye Trent of Clarksville, Ruth Bohannon of Danville, Judy Glass of Nathalie and six stepgrandchildren. Ms. Patricia Dalton Rice, 64, of 1025 Burnt Bridge Road, Lynchburg, died Friday, March 26, 1999 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Rudolph Dalton and Nannie Clements Dalton. Ms. Rice was a journalist for Alumni Relations-Lynchburg College and a member of Fairview Christian Church. Survivors include a daughter, Pattie Rice of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, Mark Rice of Lynchburg and Robert C. Rice Jr. of Gainesville, Fla. and two grandchildren, Lauren and Caitlin Rice of Gainesville, Fla. John W. (Bill) Smith
AMHERST — John W. (Bill) Smith, 62, of Hartless Road, Amherst, died Saturday morning, March 27, 1999 in a Charlottesville nursing home. Born Sept. 3, 1936 in Nelson County, a son of the late William N. Smith and Evelyn Perry Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Hudson Smith and was a retired self-employed farmer. He is survived by his sisters, Evelyn S. Johnson and Margaret S. Gilbert both of Lynchburg, Kathleen Ramsey of Shipman, Susie (Polly) Stevens of Madison Heights, Judy M. Smith and Bessie F. Smith both of Lovingston and Virginia (Nannie) Johnson of Amherst; his brothers, Jesse Smith of Lovingston, Lester Smith of Shipman and Douglas Smith of Lynchburg and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston with John P. Campbell officiating with interment in Mountain View Cemetery in Lovingston. Larry Wayne Staton
AMHERST — Larry Wayne Staton, 55, died Saturday, March 27, 1999. He was the husband of Janette Smith Staton. Born May 12, 1943 in Amherst County, he was a son of the late Olin Mason and Adell Burks Staton. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jack Quinton Staton and wife, Kathy of Amherst; one daughter, Hazel Staton Tyree and husband, Mark of Evington; three sisters, Geneva Lou Fuller of Lynchburg, Juanita Doss of Roanoke and Frances West of Lanoir, N.C.; two brothers, Howard Staton of Gladstone and Johnny Staton of Lynchburg; one grandson, Hunter Allen Tyree. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee Staton. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 1999 at Driskill Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Stan Pique officiating. Orice F. Tibbs
Orice F. Tibbs, 76, of Manassas, died Friday, March 26, 1999 at his residence. Mr. Tibbs was born and grew up in Gladys. He then lived in Solomon’s Island, Md. and has resided in Manassas since 1956. He was a United States Army veteran, serving in WWII and receiving such commendations as the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign medal with three bronze stars and the Victory Medal. Mr. Tibbs worked for the George Hyman Company for many years, retiring in 1986. He helped build the Kennedy Center and was also integral in setting the bust of John F. Kennedy in the building. He also helped to build the underground METRO system. He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pauline (Elder) Tibbs of Manassas; his daughter, Bettie C. (and Gene) Keyton of Manassas; three brothers, C.B. Tibbs of Arlington, Asa Tibbs of Port Charlotte, Fla. and Lawrence Tibbs of Ocean City, Md.; two sisters, Beatrice Nelson of Altavista and Grace Roaks of Gladys; two grandchildren, Jessica D. Keyton of Manassas and Marc (and Stacey) Keyton of Nashville, Tenn. and one great-granddaughter, Ashley N. Keyton of Chattanooga, Tenn., as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. today at Lee Funeral Home of Manassas, 8521 Sudley Road, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 29, 1999 with the Rev. Carol S. Hazel Letts Williamson
Hazel Letts Williamson, 91, of 501 VES Rd. died Friday, March 26, 1999. She was the widow of Raymond H. Williamson. A memorial service for the residents will be held at Westminster Canterbury in the Weissert Chapel at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 30, 1999. At a later date a memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church at the convenience of her family. Members of the Blue Ridge Chapter of NSDAR are invited to attend Tuesday. Diuguid Rivermont Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
