Lillian Reynolds “Lil” Atkins, 68, of 213 Parrish Road, Danville, died Thursday morning, Oct. 8, 1998 at her residence. She was the wife of S.E. “Tony” Atkins. Born June 5, 1930 in Altavista, she was the daughter of the late Robert J. Reynolds and Ruth Gibson Reynolds. She graduated from Virginia Baptist Hospital in 1951 as a Registered Nurse, worked at Danville Regional Medical Center as a Charge Nurse from Dec. 1955 until her retirement in June of 1992. She was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, Altavista. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Robert E. Atkins of Callands, James A. Atkins of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Debra A. Wesley of Danville; two brothers, R.J. Reynolds, Lloyd C. Reynolds; two sisters, Lois R. Hackworth, Mary Catherine R. Pillow all of Altavista, and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vernell R. Wilson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 10, 1998 at Barker Funeral Home Chapel, Danville by the Rev. Becky J. Cloud. Burial will be in Highland Burial Park. Harry Robert (Bobby) Camden III
Harry Robert (Bobby) Camden III, 57, of Roanoke and formerly of Bedford, passed away Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998 in the Veteran Administration Hospital, Salem. He was born Oct. 12, 1940 in Bedford County, a son of Harry R. Camden Jr. of Lynchburg and Nelsie Arthur Camden of Madison Heights. He was a former employee of Murray & Bolling Chevrolet and was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Danny Ray Camden, Fort Lee; a sister and brother-in-law, Sara Ann and Richard Pentecost, Madison Heights. Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, 1998 from the Greenwood Cemetery by the Rev. Dr. Carl H. Douglass Jr. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Sunday and the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home, Bedford.

Lelda Elizabeth Harlow
Miss Lelda Elizabeth Harlow, 91, of Camelot Hall Nursing Home, Lynchburg, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 7, 1998. Miss Harlow was born May 17, 1907 in Arrington, a daughter of the late Thomas Edward Harlow and Lula May Smoot. She was a member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. Miss Harlow worked for the C&P Telephone Company of Virginia from Sept. 13, 1926 until she retired May 31, 1972. During her tenure with the telephone company, Miss Harlow worked throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and District of Columbia and was recognized for superior performances during World War II when she served as a telephone operator for the Norfolk and Washington, D.C. areas. Miss Harlow was a member of the Virginia Garden Club, the Lynchburg Business and Professional Women’s Club and held a lifetime membership in the Telephone Pioneers Club. During her lifetime Miss Harlow traveled throughout the United States, Europe and Mexico. She loved children and devoted much of her time and money to causes supporting underprivileged children throughout the United States and the world. Survivors include the following nieces and nephews, Mary Daniel Brown, Charlottesville, Lula B. Drumheller, Charlottesville, Malinda H. Traweek, Pine Bluff, Ark., Shirley Walkup, Arrington, Calvin W. Harlow, Murrell’s Inlet, S.C., William R. Harlow, Wichita Falls, Texas, Joseph T. Harlow, S.C., Craig R. Millner, Portland, Ore., Herbert I. Walkup, N.C. and a special cousin, Rev. C. Randall Harlow, Staunton. Miss Harlow was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas M. Harlow and William R. Harlow and six sisters, Mary Etta Harlow Brown, Carolyn Harlow, Myrtle Harlow, Mildred H. Millner, Bessie H. Vickers and Frances H. Walkup. Miss Harlow’s wishes and directions were that her body be donated for research to the Virginia State Anatomical Division, Richmond. The family will hold a memorial service to celebrate Miss Harlow’s life at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, Lynchburg in early Nov. with the Rev. C. Randall Harlow, the Rev. O. Murray Unruh and the Rev. Nolan R. Crowder officiating. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, 4660 Fort Avenue, Lynchburg, Va. 24502.

Mrs. Annie (Mickey) Jones
Mrs. Annie (Mickey) Jones of 409 Monroe Street, Lynchburg, departed this life Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998 in Avante Nursing Home. Born in Appomattox County, she was the daughter of the late Luke and Arlene Cardwell. Her husband is Finice A. Jones Sr., she was a member of Pilot Mountain Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, Finice A. Jones Jr. and his wife, Linda Jones of Concord; three brothers, James Richard Cardwell, Eugene Cardwell and Percy Cardwell; two sisters, Magdalean Cheatham and Mary Yuille all of Lynchburg, three grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. The family is receiving friends at the home of her son, Finice Jones Jr., 83 Coffey Road, Concord and her sister, Magdalean Cheatham, 1516 Pierce Street. Funeral announcements will appear later. Merle Watson Lee
Merle Watson Lee, 67, of 4715 Boonsboro Road, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Lee was born March 27, 1931 in Lynchburg to the late Rawley Hatcher Watson and Elizabeth Kershaw Watson. She was a member of Rivermont Avenue Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane L. and Andy J. Whitehead of Lynchburg; a nephew, his wife and son, Ley, Meredith and Joshua Watson of Richmond; a niece and her husband, Margaret and Tim Stone of Auburn, Ala. Earl S. Taylor Sr.
Earl S. Taylor Sr., 75, of 7706 Kemp Lane, Frederick, Md., died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Doris F. Tregoning Taylor. Born March 17, 1923 in Worcester County, he was a son of the late Neal T. and Jennie L. Stevens Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a veteran of World War II, where he served aboard a Landing Ship, Tank (LST-119) in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He was a retired electrician with Pelburn Electric, Rockville and was an avid gardener and had operated Earl’s Produce Stand at his home on Kemp Lane for a number of years. Besides his wife, he is survived by seven children, M. Carroll Taylor and wife, Sharon of Salisbury, Md., Russell A. Taylor and wife, Pat of Elizabethtwon, Pa., Joy B. Taylor and husband, Norris of Salisbury, Md., Corlis Anita Broadway and husband, Harvey of Nashville, Tenn., Patricia Ann Pruitt and husband, Robert of Peddler Mills, Earl Steven Taylor Jr. of Orange City, Fla. and Gordon Lee Taylor also of Fla.; three stepchildren, Kenneth Russell Cromwell of Hagerstown, Md., Steven Cromwell and wife, Lori of Frederick, Md., Susan Baker and husband, Jim of Keymar, Md.; three brothers, Herman Taylor of Quarryville, Pa., Granville Taylor of Pocomoke, Md., William Taylor of Stockton, Md.; one sister, Olive Johnson of Pocomoke, Md., 25 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Taylor and one grandson. Ralph Anthony Dendtler
The end of life’s journey for Mr. Ralph A. Dendtler closed as he exchanged mortal life for life eternal. Ralph passed away at the age of 77 on Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital with his wife, Marguerite Dendtler present. He was a native of Bronx, N.Y. and presently residing in Madison Heights. He was born June 1, 1921 in St. Croix, USVI, a son of the late Crystalia Bolling and Ivan Gustav Dendtler. At an early age he accepted Christ as his personal savior, was baptized and became a member of All Souls Episcopal Church in New York City. He performed with distinction in the U.S. Army from April 10, 1942 until Nov. 30, 1945. Serving in Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France Rhineland and Ardennes, all without any wounds. He received the following decorations and citations during his tour of duty, Good Conduct Medal, American Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and World War II victory medal. Ralph worked diligently as manager of Dentler’s grocery in New York along side his mother for many years. He was later employed by the city of New York as a medallion Taxi driver and by the New York Transit Authority. He later met and married Alberta E. Mills. To this union, five children were born, Ralph T. Dendtler of Madison Heights, Denise C. Lee of Ithaca, N.Y., Dr. Pamela Dendtler and Carmille Dendtler both of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Malcolm Dendtler of Lynchburg. In addition to his wife and children, survivors include a loving sister, Geraldine Whittington of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five stepdaughters, Sandra Spain of Augusta, Ga., Diane Bash, Susan Bash and Terry Hamilton all of Bronx, N.Y., Melvina Hamilton of Augusta, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Artis Dendtler of Madison Heights; a son-in-law, Abraham Lee of Ithaca, N.Y., 12 grandchildren, one step grandchild, two great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives, along with devoted friends. A funeral service will be held at noon today, Oct. 9, 1998 at Benta’s Funeral Home Chapel in New York City. Interment will follow in Cypress Hill Cemetery. Whitten Monelison Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Richard Lawrence Edwards
GREENVILLE, N.C. — Richard Lawrence Edwards, 74, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C. Mr. Edwards, a native of Aurora, Ill., had been a resident of Greenville, N.C. since 1996. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army. He was a graduate of Aurora University in Aurora, Ill. For 28 years, he was employed as a district manager LUTC-CLU with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, a member of the Holy Trinity United Methodist Church, he was active on the Administrative Board and the United Methodists Mens Organization, an ordained minister, served as a chaplain for Campers for Christ Ministries, and was involved with the local Promise Keepers Organization. He attended Banner Elk Christian Fellowship in Banner Elk, N.C. during the summer months. Mr. Edwards is survived by his wife, Charlene “Chuckie” Edwards; a daughter, Marcia E. Board of Greenville, N.C.; two sons, Gregory A. Edwards of Rocky Mount and James K. Edwards of Nashville, N.C.; a sister, Betty Jane Edwards of Pekin, Ill.; his twin brother, Robert Lloyd Edwards Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998 in Holy Trinity United Methodist Church on Red Banks Road. Ms. Pauline F. Edwards
Ms. Pauline F. Edwards of Rt. 151, Clifford, departed this life Oct. 8, 1998. She leaves to cherish her memories one brother, Thomas D. Edwards of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters-in-law, a devoted and caring aunt, Helen Thomas Garland of Clifford and another aunt, Jeanette Jones of Baltimore, Md. and a host of other relatives and friends. Carroll Pugh Marshall
AUSTELL, GA. — Carroll Pugh Marshall, 76, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998. Born July 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Sylvester Thaeton and Gladys Wade Pugh. Mrs. Marshall graduated from Longwood College, Farmville in 1943 with Home Economics and Education degrees. She was certified in Library Science from the University of Virginia in 1967. She taught school in Arlington County and Loudoun County. She retired in 1972 as Librarian with the Loudoun County School System. She then moved to Bedford County, where she was an elder at the Bedford Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the D.A.R. and the Book Club and a long time volunteer at the Bedford Hospital. Her favorite activities included church activities, reading, traveling, sewing and preparing food for different occasions. In 1995, she moved to Austell, Ga. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Edward Marshall III; a son, Thomas E. “Tem” Marshall IV of Marietta, Ga.; a daughter, Linda Marshall Mitchell of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Myrtle Pugh Minnick of Roanoke; a brother, Ray Pugh of Charlotte Court House; grandchildren, Kim and Stephanie Marshall, Matthew and Carolyn Mitchell. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, 1998 at Driskill Funeral Chapel in Amherst with Dr. Richard Boyce officiating. Private burial will be in the Amherst Cemetery. Janice Arleen Parr, 65, of Amherst, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998 at Avante` of Lynchburg. Born in Amherst, Feb. 23, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Edward Virgil Parr and Carrie Higginbotham Parr. Ms. Parr was a member of Central Baptist Church and retired from Catawba Hospital after 34 years of service. Survivors include one brother, James E. (Jimmie) Parr and wife, Mary Lee of Amherst; one niece, Susan Parr Bailey and husband, Steve also of Amherst; one nephew, Gregory Parr and wife, Gwen of Amherst; four great-nieces, one great-nephew, five aunts, one uncle and several devoted cousins. In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her stepmother, Nancy Teass Parr and a sister, Beatrice Parr Burley. Mary Brooks Rush, 60, of 46 Barbour Drive, Forest, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998, at her home. Mrs. Rush was born January 8, 1938, in Lynchburg to the late Lyle and Frances Brooks. She was the owner of T.L.C. Health Care. She is survived by her husband, Ennis Rush; two brothers, Lyle Brooks Jr. and his wife, Eva, of Lynchburg, Preston Brooks of Casa Grande, Ariz.; two sisters, Sandra Spencer and her husband, Jay, of Lynchburg, Linda DellaMea and her husband, Carl, of Hanover, Mass.; two stepdaughters, Mary Sandridge and her husband, Tom, Pam Witt and her husband, Jeff; three grandchildren, Joseph, Amanda and Nora. Maynard Harvey Wood
Maynard Harvey Wood, 80, of 2013 Poplar Street, died Thursday, Oct. 8, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mabel Coleman Wood. Born May 3, 1918 in Nelson County, he was a son of the late Charles Lewis and Estelle Simpson Wood. Mr. Wood was retired from Conner Produce, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Nelson County. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Charles Elmo Wood, Otis M. Wood, Frank P. Wood and Willie Lewis Wood and one sister, Lucille Wood. Mr. Wood is survived by his son, Charlie M. Wood; one brother, Robert Wood both of Lynchburg; two sisters, Emory Pugh of Rustburg and Estelle Spencer of Lynchburg. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Robert Campbell and the Rev. Mrs. Clara Brown Banks, formerly of 810 Polk Street, departed this life Friday, Oct. 2, 1998, in Western Wake Hospital, Cary, N.C. Born in Campbell County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary L. Brown. She was the wife of the late Thomas Evans Jr. and a member of Eighth Street Baptist church. She leaves to cherish her memories one son, Thomas Evans and his wife, Vivian, of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Anne Williams of New York, four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9 from the Eighth Street Baptist Church, Rev. Arthur A. Holmes officiating with interment in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Coleman Falls. Her remains will lie in state for one hour prior to service. Robert H. Clemmons Sr.
APPOMATTOX — Robert Holman Clemmons Sr., 91, of Rt. 3, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998 at the Appomattox Health Care Center. Twice married, his first wife was the late Gladys Marie NcNabb Clemmons and his second wife was the late Sara Stanley Beasley Clemmons. Born in Afton, Oct. 27, 1907, he was a son of the late Samuel Smith and Nanny Stanley Clemmons. He was retired from the C & O Railroad where he worked as a machinist for over 40 years. He is survived by a daughter, Norma Lepley, Harrisburg, Pa.; two sons, Thomas Samuel Clemmons, Daytona, Fla. and Raymond L. Clemmons, Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Alan Clemmons of Check and Clarence Clemmons, Waynesboro; four stepdaughters, Leah Carter, Sadie Shrader, Mary Thomas Evans and Vida Estabrook also he is survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and stepgrandchildren including Albert and Karen Faye Carter, Appomattox. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert H. Clemmons Jr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. She was born in Charlotte County, Sept. 28, 1913, the daughter of Mr. John Bennett and Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. Carrie Lloyd (Burns) Droog, 83, of 110 Page Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Twice married, she was the widow of the late Boyd E. Burns and Kors Droog. Born Oct. 17, 1914 in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel Anderson and Lizzie Vest Lloyd. Mrs. Droog was a member of Leawood Baptist Church. In addition to her husbands and parents, Mrs. Droog was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara B. Bowen and one son, Allen E. Burns Sr. She is survived by five sons, Samuel L. Burns, Sidney W. Kelly Michelle Jennings, 17, of Elon, died Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998 in Amherst County as a result of an automobile accident. She was the daughter of Charles W. and Deborah Irish Jennings. Born in Lynchburg, May 14, 1981, Kelly was a senior at Amherst County High School. She was also employed with T.J. Maxx department store and was a member of Elon Presbyterian Church. AUSTELL, GA. — Carroll Pugh Marshall, 76, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998. Born July 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Sylvester Thaeton and Gladys Wade Pugh. Mrs. Marshall graduated from Longwood College, Farmville in 1943 with Home Economics and Education degrees. She was certified in Library Science from the University of Virginia in 1967. She taught school in Arlington County and Loudoun County. She retired in 1972 as Librarian with the Loudoun County School System. She then moved to Bedford County, where she was an elder at the Bedford Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the D.A.R. and the Book Club and a long time volunteer at the Bedford Hospital. Her favorite activities included church activities, reading, traveling, sewing and preparing food for different occasions. In 1995, she moved to Austell, Ga. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Edward Marshall III; a son, Thomas E. “Tem” Marshall IV of Marietta, Ga.; a daughter, Linda Marshall Mitchell of Marietta, Ga.; a sister, Myrtle Pugh Minnick of Roanoke; a brother, Ray Pugh of Charlotte Court House; grandchildren, Kim and Stephanie Marshall, Matthew and Carolyn Mitchell. Josh Thomas Miller Jr., 53, of Route 2, Gladys, died Sunday morning at his residence. Born in Halifax County, April 14, 1945, he was the son of Josh Miller of Lynchburg and the late Ada Poindexter Miller. He was an Army veteran and was last employed by Cunningham Construction Company. He joined the Mt. Airy Baptist Church at an early age. In addition to his father, he is survived by one son, Josh Miller of N.C.; four sisters, Pathana Jones of Eggharbour, N.J., Minister Lillie Benjamin, Virginia Pratt and Rosa Lee Williams all of Philadelphia, Pa. and one half brother, Robert Rosser of Long Island and many other relatives. Elsie V. Knotts, 75, of 305 Taneytown Road, Gettysburg, Pa., died Saturday morning at the Gettysburg Hospital. She was born Nov. 6, 1922 in Lynchburg, the daughter of the late Joseph and Lilly Martin Viar. Her husband, Irvin L. Knotts died in 1978. Mrs. Knotts is survived by one daughter, Gloria L. Baker of Gettysburg, Pa., two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Joshua Loren McGarrahan
Joshua Loren McGarrahan, 16, of Bedford, passed away Monday, Oct. 5, 1998 at his residence. He was born July 18, 1982 in Roanoke, a son of Loren and Margaret Saunders McGarrahan. Josh was a member of Radford Baptist Church, was active as a junior member of the Moneta Rescue Squad and played the Tuba in the Staunton River High School Marching Band. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister, Jessie L. McGarrahan, Bedford; his paternal grandparents, Eugene T. and Della J. McGarrahan, Maryville, Tenn.; his maternal grandparents, Gordon D. and Judith M. Saunders, Lynchburg; uncle, Harry C. and aunt, Eunis T. Saunders, Bedford. Memorial services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998 from the Bedford Baptist Church, Moneta by the Rev. Nicholas T. Shaffer. Nancy Webber Patterson, 72, of Blackstone, passed from this life, Monday, Oct. 5, 1998. Nancy retired after 40 years as the office manager/bookkeeper of J.E. Patterson Jr. Lumber Company. She was a member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was presently serving as President of the Friendship Circle and Coordinator of the church prayer chain. She is survived by her husband, John Edward Patterson Jr.; her mother, Mrs. Riley Young of Blackstone; two daughters, Laura Jackson of Amelia, Elizabeth Smith and her husband, Thomas Dean Smith of Richmond; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Patterson of Farmville; five grandsons and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Dr. John Edward Patterson III. Thelma Stultz Pigg, 59, of 3384 Wagon Trail Road, P.O. Box 29, Spencer, died Monday, Oct. 5, 1998 at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. She was born in Henry County, July 28, 1939 to the late Merritt C. Stultz Sr. and the late Dora Howser Stultz. She was a 1957 graduate of Drewry Mason High School, Ridgeway and was a former executive secretary for Martinsville and Henry County Life Underwriters. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, a member of the Victory in Jesus Sunday School Class and the chimes choir. She is survived by her husband, Philip C. Pigg of the home; two sons, Connie G. Pigg of Alton and Timothy W. Pigg of Amherst; six grandchildren, two sisters, Betty S. Hammack of Lugoff, S.C. and Lucy Carole Stultz of Waynesboro; two brothers, Merritt C. Stultz Jr. of Ridgeway and Robert F. Stultz of Lawrenceville, Ga. Carroll Joseph Reid, 81, of 424 Stafford St., died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Born in Lynchburg, Jan. 16, 1917, he was a son of the late John Cecil Reid and Minnie Barricks Reid and was the husband of Reva Crawley Reid. Mr. Reid was retired from the John P. Hughes Motor Co., a member of Euclid Christian Church and for the last 20 years was very active in Perkins Park Christian Church. He was also very active in the AA. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Phillip Carroll Reid and his wife, Mary Beth; his daughter, Jane Reid Clough and her husband, William all of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, Patrick Joseph Clough and his wife, Alexandra of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jonathan Davis Clough, Amy Reid Gordon and her husband, Michael and Jason Phillip Reid all of Lynchburg; a great-granddaughter, Allyson Faith Gordon of Lynchburg and his sister, Corinne Wooldridge. A funeral service will be conducted at noon Wednesday at Perkins Park Christian Church with the Rev. Rucker A. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Agnes Myree Morris Russ
ROCKFISH DEPOT — Agnes Myree Morris Russ, 82, of Rockfish Depot Community, Shipman and formerly of Whiteville, N.C., died Monday morning, Oct. 5, 1998 at her sisters home in Rockfish Depot. Born Sept. 10, 1916 in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Alex Henry Morris and Annie Kidd Morris. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Russ and was a member of Antiock Baptist Church in Whiteville, N.C. She is survived by two sisters, Margaret M. Adams of Rockfish Depot and Ardell M. Simpson of Faber along with several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday from Ridgecrest Baptist Church near Lovingston with the Rev. John P. Campbell officiating with interment in the church cemetery. Clyde Guthrie
Clyde Guthrie, 69, of 1541 Blackburn Street, died Saturday, October 3, 1998. He was the husband of Theresa Henson Guthrie. Clyde was born in Campbell County, June 26, 1929, the son of Lena Godsey Mayberry and the late Otis B. Mayberry. He retired from Crystal Foods and was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was an avid bowler and won many trophies including the first sanctioned 300 game in Lynchburg and was inducted into the Bowler’s Hall of Fame. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert “Bob” Mayberry and Aubrey “Shorty” Mayberry and one sister, Eleanor Johnson. In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three children, Marcia Darnell Gilliam of Bedford, Clyde James Guthrie of Highland Springs and Michael David Guthrie of Minot, N.D.; two brothers, Lee Mayberry of Tucson, Ariz. and Otis Mayberry of Lynchburg; five sisters, Helen Adamson of Forest, Jean Jones and Margaret Layne of Lynchburg, Elizabeth Smith of Evington and Dorothy Williams of Forest; six grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and special friends, Ruth Silby and Robert Perdue. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Fort Hill Memorial Park by Dr. Donald L. Godfrey. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Whitten Park Avenue Chapel and other times at the residence.

Audrey S. Robinson, 78, of Goode, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 1998 at Oakwood Manor, Bedford. She was the wife of Ulysses G. Robinson. Born in Bedford County December 16, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Walter P. Spinner and Miranda Goode Spinner. She was a retired employee of Sam Moore Furniture Company. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughter, Gaynelle (Melvin) Moore of Madison Heights, Jacquelyn R. (Donald) Miller of Bedford; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, 1998 at Poplar Spring Baptist Church, Goode. Interment will follow in the Spinner Family Cemetery, Goode. J. Dudley Thomas Jr.
J. Dudley Thomas Jr., 72, of 5534 Hubbards Branch Road, Huntington, West Va., died Sunday, Oct. 4, 1998, after a long illness. He was born in Amherst County, a son of the late J. Dudley Thomas and Connie Johnson Thomas. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a retired builder, and member of Ceredo Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy L. Thomas and W. Joe Thomas. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Dean Robinson Thomas; a stepson, Stephen Robinson of Jacksonville, Fla.; a grandson, Stephen Robinson Jr. of Huntington; a granddaughter, Julie Nystrand of Jacksonville and two great-granddaughters; two brothers, Charlie D. Willard Irvin Arthur
Williard Irvin Arthur, 84, formerly of Rustburg, died Friday, Oct. 2, 1998 at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart. He was the husband of the late Edith Bryant Arthur. Born in Evington, May 11, 1914, he was the son of the late Charles Benjamin Arthur and Willie Bowling Arthur. He was a dairy farmer for the Arthur Family Dairy. Mr. Arthur was a member of the White’s United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John W. Arthur and Ben Arthur and two sisters, Myrtle Arthur and Elsie Arthur. He is survived by two daughters, Roberta Pettway and her husband, Frank of Stuart, Susanne Eyler and her husband, Jacob of Rustburg and six grandchildren, Damion Richardson, Brooke Richardson, Nathan Pettway, Jason Eyler, Jon Eyler and Jayne Eyler. Mildred Beatrice Cash, 86, of Lovingston, died Saturday morning, Oct. 3, 1998 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Born Feb. 17, 1912 in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Alexander Giles and Cora Lee North Giles. She was twice married and preceded in death by both husbands, Eugene Tinnell in 1950 and Maurice Cash in 1988. Mildred was a retired Mercantile Clerk, a loving and caring mother and a devoted friend to all who knew her. She was a member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church near Lovingston. She is survived by three daughters, Cora Dean Fitzgerald of Appomattox, Mary Lee Simpson of Waynesboro and Ruby Ann Houston of Coleman Falls; one son, Robert Eugene Tinnell of Bowling Green, 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. McFadden Sr. Born Oct. 22, 1945, she was a daughter of Dorothy Kress Wilson, Appomattox and the late Daniel Milton Wilson. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy and an employee of the Super 8 Motel. In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by two sons, J.R. McFadden Jr. and his wife, Vicky and Thomas McFadden and his wife, Stefanie; seven grandchildren, Joey, David, Becky, Jonathan, Matthew, Stephen and Jared all of Appomattox; three brothers, Daniel Wilson, Appomattox, Floyd Wilson, Rustburg, Samuel Wilson, Lynchburg; five sisters, Betty Kershner, Shirley Johnson, Ella Carter and Elizabeth Ramsey all of Appomattox and Frances Green of Roanoke.
