Kimani Da-Stephen Brown, infant son of Elizabeth Da-Loraine Trent of Rustburg, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Carolyn Faye Trent; maternal great-grandparents, David E. and Loraine B. Trent all of Rustburg and a god father, K. J. Wendell Crawford
J. Wendell Crawford, 67, of 525 Midvale Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998 at his home. He was the husband of Peggy Holloran Crawford. Born March 13, 1931 in Charlottesville, he was a son of the late Guy E. and Virginia Armstrong Crawford. He was retired from Lynchburg Foundry with 37 years of service and was presently employed by Kidd’s Services. Mr. Crawford was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, a member of American Legion Post #16 and a member of Memorial Christian Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, W. Timothy Crawford and his wife, Vicki of Amherst and M. Kelly Crawford and his wife, Janice of Lynchburg; one daughter, Pam C. Whetton and her husband, Mike of Ramstein, Germany; two brothers, Guy E. Crawford Jr. and his wife, Faye of Forest and Harry (Buddy) Crawford and his wife, Linda of Ohio; two sisters, Alleene Mayberry and her husband, Elmo of Lynchburg and Mary Ann Paris and her husband, Pete of Bristol, Tenn. and six grandchildren, Meghan Leigh Crawford, Timothy Joseph Crawford, Samuel Garrett Crawford, Matthew Brendan Crawford, Joshua Taylor Whetton and Sean Michael Whetton. Graveside services will be conducted at noon Monday from Fort Hill Memorial Park by Dr. David Curtis with military honors by American Legion Post #16. John D. Cronin of Lynchburg, died on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998 at the John Hopkins Hospital one day after his 63rd birthday. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Beate M. Cronin and three sons, Michael J. Cronin of Washington, D.C., Christopher F. Cronin of Falls Church and Daniel A. Cronin also of Falls Church. Mrs. Dorothy E. (Dot) Mitchell of 13500 Cold Water Drive, Ft. Washington, Md., died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998 in Ft. Washington Medical Center. Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Royal and Roxie Megginson. She was the wife of the late James (Jazz) Mitchell. She leaves to survive many friends and family who loved her dearly, especially her niece, Rachel Smith of Ft. Washington, Md.; her sister, Ellen Wheeler and brother, Randolph Megginson both of Lynchburg and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Sunday from Pleasant Valley Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Jackson officiating. Interment will be in the Megginson family cemetery. Edward Thomas Pettigrew Jr.
Edward Thomas Pettigrew Jr., 73, of Lynchburg, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Norma Newby Pettigrew. Born April 1, 1925 in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Irene Fielding Pettigrew and Edward T. Pettigrew Sr. Mr. Pettigrew was retired as Vice President of Scott and Stringfellow Inc. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a member and past president of the Exchange Club of Lynchburg, a member and first president of the Governmental Finance Officers Association and a member and former Treasurer of St. John’s Episcopal Church. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving in the Third Armored Division and was recipient of a Purple Heart and four Battle Stars. Mr. Pettigrew is survived by two sons, Dean A. Pettigrew of Stanardsville and Alan W. Pettigrew and his wife, Ann Kendall Pettigrew of Lynchburg and four grandchildren, Meagan A. Pettigrew, Alan W. Pettigrew Jr., Kendall Reams Pettigrew and William Edward Pettigrew. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 1998 at Fairview Cemetery, Roanoke. Joseph Alexander Younger
Joseph Alexander Younger, 82, of Rustburg, died at the Carrington on Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998. He was born in Campbell County, Oct. 29, 1915 and was the son of the late William Thomas and Sallie Herndon Younger. He was married to the late Katherine Phillips Younger. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde, Herndon and Robert Younger and three sisters, Rebecca Bondurant, Ruby Oakes and Lula Holmes. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation and was also a retired farmer. Mr. Younger was a member of the Rustburg United Methodist Church. He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Metcalf of Rustburg and Dana Kinsley of Emporia; two sons, J. Donald Younger, Ted Phillips Younger both of Rustburg; five grandchildren, Cliff Metcalf of Lynchburg, Michael Metcalf of Rustburg, Michele Happs and Joe D. Younger both of Rustburg, Teresa Younger of New York City, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, Erik and Morgan Happs, Joseph Alexander Younger II all of Rustburg and one brother, Carlton Younger of Winston-Salem, N.C. Myrtle Simpson Dudley
Myrtle Simpson Dudley, 74, of Richmond and formerly of Rainbow Forest Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998 at her residence. She was the widow of Lyle Macon Dudley. Born in Lynchburg, March 19, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Charles Hopson Simpson and Nannie Rice Simpson. She was retired from the Lynchburg General Hospital and a member of Sandusky Baptist Church. She is survived by three children, Gary Wayne Dudley and Delores Dudley Chewning both of Richmond and Dennis Dale Dudley of Concord; her sister, Nancy New and a brother, Emmit Simpson both of Lynchburg; six grandchildren, Tracy Georw, Kelli Dudley, Virginia Nguyen, Christopher Dudley, Taylor Dudley, Carrie Dudley and two great-grandchildren. Born March 12, 1903 in Elma, she was a daughter of the late William Fletcher Robertson and Ella Robertson. She was a member of the former Elma United Methodist Church. She is survived by a son, Harvey J. Elliott Jr. and his wife, Gladys of Shipman; two daughters, Bernice Cameron Elliott of Houston, Texas and Faye E. McClanahan of Palm Beach, Fla., 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the graveside in Mountain View Cemetery in Lovingston with the Rev. PINEY RIVER — Martha E. Mays, 87, of Montebello, died Wednesday evening, Oct. 21, 1998 in the Shannandoah Nursing Home in Fisherville. Born Aug. 22, 1911 in Nelson County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Phillips and Josie Elizabeth Painter Phillips. She was a member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church in Montebello and was preceded in death by husbands, Isaac Fitzgerald and Wilford Mays. She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Benjamin of Lyndhurts, Wyonna Hamilton of Glasgow and Clara Straw of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, Lynwood Fitzgerald of Staunton and Henry Fitzgerald of Richmond; a stepson, Earl Fitzgerald of Covington; 17 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Annie Serena Ramsey Olson, 73, of 729 Opie Street, died Wednesday, Oct. 21, 1998 at Augusta Medical Center. She was born Sept. 27, 1925 in Bedford, a daughter of the late Walter H. and Ollie E. (Ages) Ramsey. Mrs. Olson was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her husband, Boyd R. Olson; a daughter and her husband, Lisa O. and Anthony F. Caywood of Staunton; two grandchildren, Chase and Collin Caywood and two sisters and their husbands, Marie and Matthew Loehmer of Virginia Beach and Helen and Charles Gowen of Palmyra and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Leland Olson on Jan. 27, 1996. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church conducted by Dr. A. Taylor Todd. Overstreet both of Moneta; and a very special friend, Thomas Payne. Born in Westland, Mich., June 3, 1969, he was a son of Larry G. Robinson and Doris Lee Taylor Robinson of Westland, Mich. Larry was the Associate Director of Admissions for Liberty University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one son, Tyler Sean Robinson; one daughter, Jenna Elizabeth Robinson and another child due in April, 1999 all of Lynchburg; one sister, Debra Gazdecki of Novi, Mich.; two brothers, Steve Beggs of Westland, Mich. and Tim Robinson of Elmwood Park, Ill.; a stepbrother, Scott Lauden and a stepsister, Kim McCullin both of Dearborn, Mich.; his paternal grandmother, Luccillie Werstein of Hale, Mich.; his father and mother-in-law, Ernest and Sylvia Kaeppler of Millville, N.J. Mrs. Evelyn B. Davis
Mrs. Evelyn B. Davis went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998. She was born in Bedford County, Aug. 28, 1914 to the late Henry R. Bell and Mrs. Alice Brown Bell. Mrs. Davis confessed her belief in Christ at an early age and became a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Forest. She later became a member of Sharon Baptist Church in Big Island where she lived for many years. There she served a as deaconess, a member of the senior choir and as a Sunday school teacher. In addition to her church activities, she was also a member of the Big Island Chapter of the Order of Eastern Stars. After her husband’s retirement, they moved to Lynchburg and enjoyed a wonderful life together. Then she became a member of the Hill City Helping Hands Club. Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Eloise D. Sledd; a granddaughter, Miss Angela D. Sledd and a stepson, Leroy Davis. She is survived by Willie H. Davis, her loving husband for over 60 years; a beloved son-in-law, Louis J. Sledd, Washington, D.C.; a stepson, William M. (McClinton) Davis, Md.; three loving grandsons and their wives, Calvin L. and Gwendolyn R. Sledd, Bowie, Md., Kenneth W. Sr. and Donna B. Sledd, Columbia, Md. and Larry D. and Carmen W. Edward A. Durrwachter, 87, formerly of Altavista, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998, in Westminster-Canterbury. He was the husband of the late Mary Batty Durrwachter. Born Aug. 20, 1911, in Williamsport, Pa., he was a son of the late Christ J. and Mary Berger Durrwachter. He was a retired employee of Burlington Industries and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Jean Ewers Irvin, 71, of Highland Springs, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998 after a long battle with cancer. She was the wife of Kenneth L. Irvin. Born Dec. 26, 1926 in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Ballard M. Ewers Sr. and the late Doris Knight Ewers. Mrs. Irvin was a retired licensed practical nurse and a member of Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ballard M. Ewers Jr. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Betty E. Coakley of Lexington and Barbara E. Shaner of Lynchburg; one son, Randall L. Having received a B.A. degree from Lynchburg College and a M.F.A. degree from James Madison University, she was an artist and a veteran of WWII. Mrs. Rash was active in the Piedmont Literary Society, Lynchburg Art Club, Poetry Society of Virginia, Poetry Workshop of the Women’s Club of Lynchburg and was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. She is survived by two sons, Wayne Rash Jr. of Clifton and Charles R. Rash of Ft. Meade, Md.; one daughter, Linda L. Juanita Weeks Short, 79, of 203 E. Hurt Road, Hurt, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 1998 in her home. She was the wife of Ollie S. Short. Born March 10, 1919 in Pittsylvania County, she was a daughter of the late Walter N. (Jack) and Mary Gregory Weeks. She was a member of the Hurt United Methodist Church. APPOMATTOX — Frances Harvey Abbitt, 75, of 3 Evergreen Ave., died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was the wife of Herbert M. Abbitt. She was previously married to the late Bruce H. Paulette Sr. and the late Emmitt Walker Paulette Sr. Born in Appomattox County, Dec. 7, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Charles Courtney Harvey and Elizabeth Harvey Harvey. Mrs. Abbitt was Associate Editor for the Times Virginian, a member of New Hope Baptist Church where she served as church clerk, Sunday school teacher and co-organist, a member of the Appomattox Woman’s Club, secretary of the Appomattox Historical Society and served on the Board of Directors for the Appomattox Chapter of the American Heart Association. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Bruce H. Paulette Jr., Chris P. Greever and her husband, Chuck and E.W. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 29 years of service. He was the husband of Jenny R. Moon of Napa, Calif. Dorothy Tart Putman
Dorothy Tart Putman, formerly of Duluth, Minn., died Sunday, Oct. 18, 1998 at Drinkard Health Center. She had returned to Duluth every summer since moving to Danville in 1959. Since 1984, she had lived at Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg. Born in Menominee, Mich., she was the daughter of the late Ralph Tart and Lillian Oberkircher Tart. Mrs. Putman attended the University of Minnesota, Duluth and Michigan State University in Lansing with further studies in New York City, Germany and Austria. Widely recognized as a soprano soloist and teacher, she had been a member of the music facility at Duluth State Teachers College (now UMD), Chatham Hall and Stratford College in Virginia. She was an active member of the Matinee Musical and Cecilian Society of Duluth and of the musical life of every community where she lived. A former member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church of Duluth and the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Danville, she was a member of St. Johns Episcopal Church in Lynchburg. Mrs. Putman was married in 1946 to Willis A. Putman of Duluth who predeceased her in 1961. She is survived by one brother, Ralph J. Tart of Houston, Texas and three nephews, Peter M. Tart and James S. Tart of Dallas, Texas and Stephen M. Tart of Greenwich, Conn. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of Westminster-Canterbury in Lynchburg at a later date. Bill Winders
Bill Winders, 49, of Alexandria, died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 16, 1998 at his home. The third of seven children, Bill was born Sept. 16, 1949 in Aimes, Iowa to Gordon and Ruth Winders. Bill was a fighter from birth, life was not easy for him but he managed to find happiness in family, friends and the things he did. Bill started his construction and racing interests in 1963 at age 13, when he built a soap box derby car and raced in national competitions. Bill attended Ohio University and later became a Solar Technician with Sun Trac Industries. From there Bill worked for Engineered Energy Systems as a marketing manager. Most recently he became an assistant superintendent in residential construction. In his sparetime Bill enjoyed training dogs. His love for racing never subsided and he was a member of the Potomac Regional Porsche Club. Bill was a devoted husband and loving father. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Terry Bostick of Alexandria; daughter, Andrea Winders of Lancaster, Ohio; father and mother, Gordon and Ruth Winders of Raleigh, N.C.; brothers and sisters, Jane, Jim, Tom, Mary Kay, Donna and Ann. A memorial service in celebration of the life of Loren Oliver will be held in the Sweet Briar College Memorial Chapel at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 23, 1998. A reception will follow in the Pannell Gallery.

James Gray Otey
James Gray Otey, 75, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998 at Eldercare Nursing Home, Farmville. He was the husband of Lottie Nuckles Otey. Mr. Otey was born June 8, 1923 in Montgomery County to the late Jacob Dalton Otey and the late Alma Lilly White Otey. He was a retired painter and served in the U.S. Army. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four stepdaughters, Mrs. David (Iris Ann) Fitzhugh, Mrs. Samuel (Patricia Sue) Stump Sr., Mrs. James (Frances) Wood all of Lynchburg and Shirley Marie Wood of Rome, Ga., nine stepgrandchildren, 11 step great-grandchildren, one step great-great-grandchild. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Woodall-Tharp Chapel with the Rev. Gary Moore officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park with military honors provided by American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Wood, 113 Carnell Lane, Lynchburg, Va. 24504. Willie Payne
Willie Payne of 2005 Tulip Street, departed this life Friday afternoon in the Virginia Baptist Hospital. Born in Lynchburg, the son of the late Carrie Bateman Payne. He was a retired employee of the Portsmouth Fish Company. Surviving Willie are his daughter, Mrs. Carol Bradshaw and son, Leroy Payne both of Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Mrs. Estelle Payne of Campbell County, Mrs. Helen Dillard of Gladys and Mrs. Agusta Payne of Baltimore, Md.; one brother, Clarence E. Bateman of Lynchburg; a devoted nephew, Willie H. Crawley of Lynchburg. He is also survived by other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Community Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James E. Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until time of service. Interment will be in the Baptist Cemetery. Community Funeral Home directing.

Lona Bomar Phelps
Lona Bomar Phelps, 91, of 1550 Blackburn Street, died Saturday, Oct. 17, 1998 in Guggenheimer Nursing Home. She was the wife of Lawrence Murphy Phelps. She was born May 28, 1907 in Campbell County, the daughter of the late Elisha Bomar and Mattie Hunter Bomar. She was a member of Fairview Christian Church. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter, Hubert and Dick Bomar and four sisters, Fannie Matthews, Elsie Mowell, Georgia Dowdy and Evelyn Scott. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one son, James L. Phelps and his wife, Lore of Forest; one sister, Lizzie Kreger of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and four step great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Whitten Park Avenue Chapel by the Rev. Jan Weston. Interment will be in Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

William Malcolm Royal
William Malcolm Royal, 79, of 521 Farmers Mt. Road, Gretna, died Saturday morning in the Jefferson Park Center, Charlottesville. Miller Funeral Home, Gretna is in charge of arrangements.

Harold Corbin Turner
Harold Corbin Turner, 82, of Bedford, died Friday, Oct. 16, 1998 at Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was a farmer in Bedford County after he returned from service in 1945. He was a member of Mt. Olivet Southern Baptist Church for over 60 years. At the time of his death, he was the chairman of the Bedford County Board of Elections and had served as secretary of the Board for more than 25 years. Mr. Turner was also director of Bedford County Mutual Insurance Company. He was born Oct. 26, 1915 in Bedford County, a son of the late George Walter Turner and Jessie Preston Turner. He is survived by his wife, Katherine Robertson Turner; two daughters, Judy Turner Scott and Ann Turner Burks; three grandchildren, David Harwell Burks, Kay Alison Scott and Michael Douglas Scott. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Oct. 18, 1998 at Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Michael Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the American Heart Association, Lakeside Plaza, Office Bldg. B-#2, 2250 Murrell Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24501.
