Ronald Blood
Ronald "Ron" Richard Blood, 54 of Fairfax Station, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Inova Alexandria Hospital. Born in Jamestown, N.Y., he moved to Northern Virginia in 1994. After serving 29 years with the U. S. Army, he retired as a Chief Warrant Officer Three. He had been employed with TSI in Lanham, Md. since 1997. He enjoyed video and photography. He is preceded in death by his father, August A. Blood and his brother, Richard A. Blood. He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Marcia M. Enyart of Fairfax Station; two daughters, Rhonda J. Crowell of Dale City and Erin M. Blood of Fairfax Station; one son, Ron R. Blood Jr. of Kingstowne; his mother, Evelyn M. Blood of Jamestown, N.Y.; one grandchild, Jordan A. Crowell of Dale City; one sister, Sharon J. Cederquist of Jamestown, N.Y. and one brother, David A. Blood of Jamestown, N.Y. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City. Interment will take place in Jamestown, N.Y.

Penelope Greer
Penelope Pauline Greer, 63, of Manassas, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas. She had been a resident of Woodbridge since 1959. She worked for the Department of the Army in Fort Belvoir as the EEO operations secretary for 25 years before retiring in 1994. She was a member and past president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 7916. She was also the 10th District past president of the VFW. She is survived by two sisters, Betty Ann Kinder of Evansville, Ind., and Cora Grontas of Woodbridge. A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at the VFW Post 7916, 204 Mill St., Occoquan. Interment will be private. Contributions may be made in memory of Penelope Greer to Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Washington, 10920 Connecticut Ave., Suite 1600, Kensington, MD 20895. Diane Salak
Diane Lee Salak, 59, of Warrenton, died Tuesday, July 10, 2002 at Prince William Hospital, Manassas. She enjoyed writing, reading, sewing, baking and her family. Survivors include her husband, John R. Salak; two daughters, Alexis Adamson of Fairfax and Celeste Diane Ruth of Blacksburg; one step-daughter, Hope Salak Yannarell of Bristow; one step-son, John Wesley Salak of Warren County; two brothers, Vinson H. Beuchert Jr., and Kent A. Beuchert, both of Fairfax. Also surviving are three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas.

Edna Hurdle
Edna Mae "Conner" Hurdle, 48, of Radford, formerly of Manassas, died Sunday, June 30, 2002 at Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem. She was preceded in death by three nieces, Rebecca Curley, Cheyenne Messer and Destiny Messer; and one great-nephew, Kevin Zimmerman. Survivors include her parents, Wade L. Hurdle Sr., and Ethel M. Hurdle of Conway, S.C.; six sisters and brothers-in-law, Ida and Frank Zimmerman, Joyce and Daniel Miller, Pauline and Robert Lane, and Theresa Messer, all of Manassas, Susan and Paul Curley, of Nokesville; and Gloria and Randall Jaquins of Dillwyn; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Wade L. Hurdle Jr. of Gainesville, Joe Hurdle and AJ Curtis-Hurdle, of Fairfax, and Patrick Hurdle of Conway, S. C.; 27 nieces and nephews and 12 great-nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, with the Rev. Dr. Larry L. Lee officiating. Inurnment will follow at Stonewall Memory Gardens in Manassas.

Diane Salak
Diane Lee Salak, 59, of Warrenton, died Tuesday, July 10, 2002 at Prince William Hospital in Manassas. She enjoyed writing, reading, sewing, baking and her family. Survivors include her husband, John R. Gail Zyto
Gail Zyto, 57, of Woodbridge, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge. She attended Manassas Baptist Church and Ft. Belvoir Post Chapel. She retired in 2001 from Osbourn High School in Manassas after 22 years of service. Survivors include her husband, Gregory Zyto; three sons, Justin Allen Powers of Vienna, John Michael Powers and David Andrew Powers, both of Woodbridge; her mother, Yvonne Virginia Murphy of Norfolk; two step children, George Zyto of Alexandria and Gabrielle Zyto of Woodbridge; two sisters, Yvonne Jones of Portsmouth and Catherine McKean of Exeter, Mo. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m., both Sunday and Monday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 16 with the Rev. Beverly Stamford
Beverly "Ted" Burr Stamford Sr., 86, of Woodbridge died Thursday, July 11, 2002 at Potomac Hospital in Woodbridge. He had retired from the Lorton Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center. He also retired from the federal government after 35 years. He had also worked for Skip's Auto Parts as a driver. He enjoyed working on small engines, such as lawn mowers. He also loved hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Dale City Moose Lodge and the Dupont Masonic Lodge in Washington, D.C. He was a very devoted father, grandfather and husband. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Iris I. Stamford of Woodbridge; one son, Beverly B. Stamford Jr. of Woodbridge; two grandchildren, James B. Stamford and Timothy J. Stamford; and one great-grandchild, Alekzondra Anastasia Stamford. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Grace Salzberg
Grace Salzberg, 77, of Woodbridge died Friday, July 12, 2002 at her residence. She moved to Woodbridge in 1997 after being a resident of Florida for 18 years. She was a member of Temple Ner Shalom in Dale City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel H. Salzberg. She is survived by one daughter, Judith Salzberg Kirihara of California; one son, Jeffrey Salzberg of Woodbridge; four grandchildren; and one brother, Lloyd Robinson of Charlottesville. A graveside service will be held in the Star of David Memorial Gardens in North Lauderdale, Fla. A memorial service will be held in Woodbridge at a later date. Gregory Stanley
Gregory Pete Stanley, 45, of Abingdon died Friday, July 12, 2002 at his home. He was a native of Dante, and had lived in Manassas for 20 years before moving to Abingdon 17 years ago. He is survived by his wife, Stacey Stanley; two sons, Aaron Stanley and Justin Stanley, both of Abingdon; one daughter, Jessica Stanley of Abingdon; two brothers, Rodney Stanley of Abingdon and Robert Stanley of Manassas; one sister, Christina Vella of Johnson City, Tenn.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. A funeral service will be conducted Monday, July 15, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul Bufford officiating. Burial will follow in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Alfred Thorne Jr.
Alfred Jesse Thorne Jr, 49, of Leesburg, died Saturday, July 6, 2002 at Loudoun Hospital Center in Leesburg. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eugenia Davis Thorne and a brother, Raymond Thorne. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Thorne of Reston; two sons, Shawn Thorne of Reston and Kenneth Thorne of Richmond; four daughters, Tanya Thorne of Leesburg, Sharon Thorne and April Thorne, both of Reston, and Robin Thorne of Centreville; two brothers, Michael Thorne of Chantilly and Melvin Thorne of Warrenton; his father, Alfred J. Thorne Sr. and step-mother, Bessie Thorne; five sisters, Linda Smith and Beverly Payne, both of Manassas, Betty Payne of Occoquan, Robin Thorne of Lynchburg and Toni Lansdowne of Manassas Park; two grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. Monday at Ames Funeral Home, 8914 Quarry Road, Manassas, where services will be held at noon. Interment will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery, Manassas.

Lyle LeMasters Sr.
Lyle Russell LeMasters Sr., 61, of Manassas, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at his residence after a one-year illness with cancer. He was born March 28, 1941 in Mount Hope, W.Va. He was the son of the late Russell King (Bud) LeMasters and Mary Marie LeMarr. He was president of LeMasters Heating and Air Conditioning Services, Inc., Manassas. He worked in the heating and air conditioning industry for 40 years. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Christine Critchley. Survivors include his wife, Betty K. Fox LeMasters; one son, Lyle Russell LeMasters Jr. of Manassas; five sisters, Demma Jean Coulter and her husband Elba of Ronceverte, W.Va., Lucille Bragg of Ansted, W.Va., Mildred Cavendish of Manassas, Grace Flester and her husband Dave of Colonial Beach and Brenda Horrocks of Charleston, W.Va.; two brothers, James Critchley and his wife Norine of Versailles, Ky., and Audie Critchley and his wife Gladys of Corliss, W.Va. Also surviving are two chosen grandchildren, Alicia Chan and Olivia Chan, both of Gainesville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, and from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, 350 W. Maple Ave., Fayetteville, W.Va., where services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. Russell Coulter officiating. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens, Victor, W.Va., with Mr. LeMasters' nephews serving as pallbearers. William Carlisle Jr.
William Spencer Carlisle Jr., 40, of Woodbridge, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Mt. Vernon Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Prince William County and a member of the Vineyard Christian Fellowship. Preceded in death by his parents, William S. Carlisle Sr. and Jo Ann Carlisle, he is survived by three sisters, JoAnn Covert of Tennessee, Lisa Carlisle of South Riding and Laurie Miller of Dale City; and two brothers, Joe Carlisle of Front Royal and Gary Carlisle of Fredericksburg. A memorial service will take place Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 13900 Church Hill Drive, Woodbridge. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, Md. Edgar Conner Jr.
Edgar Ren Conner Jr., 88, of Catharpin, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Falls Church. He was born Aug. 17, 1913, in Manassas, the son of the late Edgar Ren and Anna Ursula Newman Conner. He graduated from Swavely School in Manassas and was a 1936 graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a farmer. Survivors include his wife, Katherine Pattie Conner; one son, Edgar R. Conner III of Catharpin; and one sister, Elvere Cox of Charlottesville. Graveside services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sudley United Methodist Church Cemetery, 5308 Sudley Road, Catharpin, the Rev. Dr. Ralph G. Satter officiating. Edna Haines
Edna May Sadorus Haines, 83, of Front Royal, formerly Warrenton, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at the home of Leroy and Loretta Henry. She was born May 14, 1919, in Sadorus, Ill., the daughter of Warren and Pearl Walsh Sadorus. She moved from Sadorus to the Washington, D.C., area in the 1940s where she was a secretary for the Defense Department. She later moved to Fauquier County and became a secretary with Tom Frost. She retired from the Fauquier County Health Department. She was a member of Midland United Methodist Church and a former member of the John Marshall Garden Club. Survivors include her son, Gordon Donald Haines Jr. of Manassas and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Midland United Methodist Church, the Rev. Brian Segal and the Rev. Bill Day officiating. Interment will take place at Craw Cemetery in Sadorus. Carl Harris
Carl Thomas Harris, 83, of Herndon, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Reston Hospital Center, Reston. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Reston. He is survived by one daughter, Bessie Harris-Smith of Oxon Hill, Md.; son-in-law, McCalvin Smith of Oxon Hill; one granddaughter, Cher Harris of Herndon; one grandson, John Thomas Harris of Manassas; three great-grandchildren; seven sisters, Cora Carter and Evelyn Young, both of Vienna, Vergie Barbour of Clifton, Florance Lee, Bertha Brent of Centreville, Lillian Newman of Fairfax and Josephine Offer of Orange; two brothers, Charles Harris and Lloyd Harris, both of Vienna; many relatives and friends. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 2506 Squerrell Hill Road, Herndon, where services will be held at noon with the Rev. James Graham officiating. Karen Lipinski
Karen Ann Lipinski, 55, a popular second-grade teacher at Dale City Elementary School from 1980 until she retired because of illness earlier this year, died of breast cancer, Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Inova Alexandria Hospital. Mrs. Lipinski was born in Shenandoah Heights, Pa., and raised in Edgewood, Md. She was a 1964 graduate of Edgewood High School. She earned a bachelor's degree from James Madison University and a master's degree in speech pathology from the University of Nebraska. She served as a speech therapist at an Army base in Germany before returning to the Washington area in 1980, settling in Alexandria. At Dale City Elementary, she was known for her creativity in introducing activities for her students. She raised vegetables with them in the school's garden. In 1992, she was named Elementary Teacher of the Year by the Dale City Civic Association. She had been a member of Edgewood United Methodist Church and attended St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria. Survivors include her husband of 31 years, retired Army Col. Edward Lipinski of Alexandria; her mother, Wilhelmina Yackabonis of Edgewood; and a sister, Elizabeth Eden of Helena, Mont. Arrangements were handled by Demaine Funeral Chapel in Springfield. Interment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on July 30 at 8:30 a.m. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in her memory. There will be a dedication ceremony at Dale City Elementary School in the fall.

John Taylor
John David Taylor, 48, of Alexandria, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Oak Meadow Nursing Center in Alexandria. He worked with his father in their family-owned construction company. He built many homes in the Mount Vernon area. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hilda M. Taylor. He is survived by his father, John W. Taylor of Alexandria; his son, Nicholas Richard Marra of Harper's Ferry, W.Va.; his sister, Jody L. Taylor of Lorton; and one nephew. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, where services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery in Manassas.

Arthur Sampson Jr.
Arthur Carroll Sampson Jr., 56, of Woodbridge, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Potomac Hospital. He was a member of the American Legion Post 162 in Lorton and a member of the Elks Lodge No. 2355. He is survived by his wife, Sandy K. Sampson of Woodbridge; two sons, Duane C. Sampson and his wife, Patricia, and W. Todd Sampson and his wife, Teresa, all of Stafford; two granddaughters, Rachel and Kaitlyn Sampson; one sister, Cheryl Zacharias of Woodbridge; four brothers, Michael Sampson, Ronnie Sampson and Chris Sampson, all of Woodbridge, and Wayne Sampson of Martinsburg, W.Va. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., today at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev.
