Ivette Ettienne
Ivette Maria Ettienne, 34, of Dale City, died Sunday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Potomac Hospital. A county resident for nine years, she owned a day care business and was a founder of Our Little Angels Child Care Association, where she served as treasurer.
Survivors include her daughter, Ivonne-Myrel Ettienne of Dale City; two sons, Marcus Mack and Enrique Ettienne, both of Dale City; two sisters, Gloria Hay-Bailey of Colorado and Nadira Weekes of Panama; three brothers, Roy Hay-Branford and Rolando Hay-Bailey, both of New York, and Herman Flores of Panama.
The family will received friends Friday at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 4143 Dale Blvd., Dale City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Fairfax Assembly of God, the Rev. Steve Brimmer officiating. Interment to follow at Fairfax Memorial Park.

Estella Marie Hendrick, 94, of Manassas died Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Marshall Manor, Marshall. She was born Estella Marie Kronlein in Ludington, Mich. Preceded in death by her husband, Gerald A. Hendrick, she is survived by her children, Joan Parrish of Manassas and Jerry Hendrick of California; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Claude Ellis
Claude Ellis, 76, of Stafford, died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001.
He is survived by his children, Claudia Ann Ellis of Stafford, Claude Ellis Jr., Felicia Ellis, Maxine Ellis and Margaret Hearns, all of Milpitas, Calif., Stella Clark of Dumfries, David Muse of Manassas and William Muse of Vienna; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two aunts, Annie Sims and Gertrude Little, both of Drainesville; and many other relatives and friends.

Nancy Jo R. Leonard
Nancy Jo Roberta Leonard, 62, of Pensacola, Fla., formerly of Manassas, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at West Florida Memorial Hospital. Her body was cremated and returned to Virginia for burial.
Born June 19, 1938, in Sparta, Wis., she was the daughter of the late William Geloneck and Vivian Cave.
She attended Washington State University, where she was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority. She was a military wife and homemaker. She later worked for 13 years at Peebles Department Store in Manassas before retiring to Florida.
She is survived by a son, David Leonard Jr. of Manassas; a daughter, Teri Goldzwig of Clear Spring, Md.; a brother, William Geloneck Jr. of Alamogordo, N.M.; her mother, Vivian Cave of Puyallup, Wash; six grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.
A family burial service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Stonewall Memory Gardens, 12004 Lee Highway, Manassas, with the Rev. Michael Tassler officiating.
Clarence B. Marshall
Clarence "Joe" Brady Marshall, 69, of Manassas Park, died Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Prince William Hospital.
Marshall was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the Korean conflict. He was a member of Colchester Free Will Baptist Church in Fairfax; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 26, Washington, D.C.; and Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 1811, Manassas Park.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Thelma Lynn Marshall; one son, John B. Marshall of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth A. and Roger Zadik of Manassas, Victoria D. and James Yates Sr. of Manassas Park and Sally L. and Joseph Hoffman of Manassas Park; five sisters, Betty Puckett and Thelma Harmon, both of Charlotte, N.C., Cora Green of Welch, W.Va., and Cathy Cantrell and Patsy Cook, both of Brenton, W.Va.; one brother, Daniel Shadd, of Marianna, W.Va.; eight grandchildren, Samantha L. Marshall of the home, Michelle D. Yates, James V. Yates Jr. and Emily M. Yates, all of Manassas Park, William J. Zadik, Rachel K. Zadik and Jessica T. Zadik, all of Manassas, and Lauren A. Elsie M. Hale
Elsie Mae Hale, 80, of Fredericksburg, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at her residence.
She had been a resident of Prince William County until 1987. She worked in the Prince William County school system for 27 years, retiring in 1986 as cafeteria manager of Occoquan Elementary. She cared for many of her infirm family members during her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George N. Hale.
She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy M. Gilreath of Fredericksburg; her son, David L. Hale of Woodbridge; a brother, Walter W. Leddon of Manassas; two granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

Col. Arthur Thurston Surkamp, 79, resident of Middleburg, died Oct. 17, 2001, after a heart attack.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Jean Heard Surkamp.
He is survived by his wife Barbara Surkamp; his children, Susan S. Anderson of Boston, James T. Surkamp of Shephardstown, W.Va.,a nd Arthur T. Surkamp Jr. of Manassas; his stepchildren, Lydna B. McCann of Gray, Maine, Robin B. Rowe of Hartford, Conn., Elizabeth B. Hume, Lower Heidelberg, Pa., one sister, Ann Hogan of Indian River Colony, Fla.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Betty M. Clay
Betty Martin Clay, 74, of Woodbridge died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001,at Potomac Hospital.
She had been a resident of Prince William County since 1962, a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Dale City and the AARP. She retired after 20 years of service as an executive secretary for the U.S. Air Force.
Preceded in death by her husband, Robert L. Clay, she is survived by two daughters, Karen E. Collins of Woodbridge and Robin M. Bishop of Newport News; one son, Gary L. Clay of Dumfries; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Turner T. Smith Sr.
Turner Taliaferro Smith Sr., died Wednesday, Oct. 17, at his home, Greenwood Farm, near Haymarket.
He was the father of five, a respected member of the legal community, a "gentleman farmer," and an avid golfer.
Born in Washington, D.C., he was raised in the Washington area. He received a bachelor’s degree in commerce from the University of Virginia in 1934, and earned an LLB from George Washington University in 1936. In 1936 he began practicing law and became associated with the Hogan and Hartson law firm in 1941. From 1943 to 1946 he served as an officer in the United States Navy as a member of the Office of Strategic Services.
At the end of World War II, Smith returned to Hogan and Hartson, but soon returned to the government in Foreign Service, serving in Istanbul, Turkey and Mexico City, Mexico.
In 1960, Smith returned practice law in Manassas. He represented the town of Haymarket from 1960 until 1995. He was the town attorney for the growing town of Manassas for 27 years, from 1961 to 1988. In 1973, Smith co-founded the law firm of Smith and Davenport and continued his work in municipal law, serving at various times as the attorney also for several other local municipalities, including Quantico, Dumfries and Manassas Park. for over fifty years he was a member of the Virginia Bar Association and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Virginia State Bar from 1981 until 1984. Turner Smith was a member of the Barristers, a member of the Virginia Election Laws Commission, and served as President of the Virginia Law Foundation. He was awarded the first Arthur Sinclair Professionalism Award in 1992 by the Prince William County Bar Association.
He served on the Board of Directors for Stuart Hall, a residential school for girls in Staunton, and assisted in the establishment of WETA as a board member and an advisor during its formative years. He was a long-time member of the Chevy Chase Country Club and the Washington Golf and Country Club. More recently, he and others founded the Evergreen Country Club, in Haymarket.
Turner Smith married Lois Fisk of Texas in 1938 and shared his life with her and their five children until her death in 1989. He was married to Mary Harrover Ayes Ferguson from 1991 until her death in 2000.
Turner T. Smith is survived by his son, Turner Taliaferro Smith Jr. of Middleburg; his daughters, Glenore Fisk Smith of Manassas, Jaquelin Smith Gotlieb of Stone Mountain, Ga., Josephine Pendleton Smith Strickler of Richmond and Emily Taliaferro Smith Rappold of Fairfax; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , 6760 Fayette St., Haymarket, with the Rev. David N. Jones officiating.
Lillian E. Lucas
Lillian Edith Lucas, 85, of Manassas died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church.
Born in Prince William County, she was a member of Westover Baptist Church, Manassas. She was a member and Sunday school teacher at various churches over the years.
Preceded in death by her parents, John Thomas and Sadie Heflin Norman; two sisters, Osie Wheaton and Anna P. Routt; and one brother, Luther A. Norman; she is survived by her husband of 70 years, Charles Edward Lucas; one daughter,
Shirley E. Webb of Manassas; three sisters, Beatrice Herrick of Gettysburg, Pa., Dorothy M. Keys and Jane Scott, both of Manassas; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Woodrow Hicks, 67, of Manassas died October 19, 2001, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.
He is survived by his wife Lillian; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Rose of Stephens City; one son, John Brabern Hicks of Manassas; two brothers Harry Hicks of Manassas and Bill Hicks of Warrenton; two sisters, Fannie Nicholson of Manassas and Stella Korzendorfer of Manassas; and two grandchildren.

Neta Brumback Young, 96, of Stafford died October 18, 2001, at Heritage Hall Health Care. Preceded in death by her parents, Henry Walton and Anne Huffman Brumback, and husband, Larrie Young, she is survived by one daughter; Lois J. Young of Stafford; one son, Warren L. Young of Stafford; two sisters, Eva B. Cato of Dumfries and Edith B. Payne of Strasburg; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

Michael W. Butler
Michael Wayne Butler, 50, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of the Fredericksburg area, died Monday, October 25, 2001, at Lakeland Regional Hospital, Lakeland.
He was a carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by his son, William J. Butler; father and stepmother; Joseph P. and Jacqueline Butler of Fredericksburg; and one half-brother; Joseph Butler Jr. of Staten Island, N.Y.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens, U.S. 1, Spotsylvania County with the Rev. John DeJong officiating.

Lana J. Nickell
Lana Jean Nickell, of Paducah, Ky., died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-East in Memphis, Tenn.
She was born in Charleston, W.Va., and grew up in Nokesville. She was a graduate of Brentsville District High School and received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Morris Harvey College in Charleston and a master’s degree in academic counseling from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She had served as a teacher and assistant principal at Lynchburg Christian Academy, Lynchburg and had taught in several public school systems in Virginia and North Carolina. After moving to Paducah, she taught at Cornerstone Christian Academy and served as a private tutor. Among her many professional honors, Nickell had previously been recognized as Virginia’s Teacher of the Year. She was a member of the Paducah Lions Club, Heartland Worship Center and the Alpha Omega Pi sorority.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Ruth Keeny of Manassas and Doyle King of Charleston; and one brother, James King.
She is survived by her husband of 11 years, Paducah attorney, Shea Nickell; two brothers, Dr. Terry King of Millboro and John Keeney of Manassas; and several nieces and nephews. The family received friends Friday at Heartland Worship Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.today at Heartland Worship Center, 4777 Alben Barkley Drive, Paducah. Officiating will be Dr. Jerry Falwell of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, where she was a former member. The Rev. Don Young, the Rev. Johnny Sams, the Rev. Jonathan Falwell, the Rev. Gregory Waldorp and the Rev. Joe Geary will assist with the service. Burial will be in Maplelawn Park Cemetery.
