Shelia E. Lawrence
Mrs. Shelia Evette Elam Lawrence, 41, of 2418 Cherry Blossom Dr., Suffolk, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001 in DePaul Medical Center. A Suffolk native, she was the daughter of Pastor James T. Elam. Sr. and Mrs. Bernice Blow-Elam of Zuni. Mrs. Lawrence was a graduate of Windsor High School. She received her BS degree in elementary education from Virginia Union University, Richmond, and her MA degree in administration from Old Dominion University, Norfolk. She was employed with the Isle of Wight County Pubic School System for 20 years, and was a member of the National Teachers Association, VEA and the Education Association of Isle of Wight County. She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Windsor, and was a member of its Deaconess Board, Intercessory Prayer Team and Christian Support Ministry. She also directed the Gospel Choir and combined choirs. Besides her parents, she also leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted husband, Deacon Gregory A. Lawrence; a brother and sister-in-law, Rev. James T. Elam Jr. and wife, Rose (Penny) Elam, of Hampton; a god-sister, Mashonda Joyner; a god-son, Tracy O. Stallings; nephews, James Elam III and Joshua Elam; aunts, Irene B. Littlejohn, Roberta B. Wilson, and husband, Wilburn, Mildred E. Haskins, and husband, Herman, all of Suffolk; Catherine E. Butler and husband, Samuel, of Ivor; and Evangelist Florence E. Brown of Chester, Pa.; uncles, Rev. Wesley Elam, and wife, Sylvia of Durham, N.C.; Frank Elam of Suffolk and Matthew Elam, and wife, Brenda, of Zuni; and several other relatives, cousins and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Shiloh Baptist Church, Windsor by Pastor James T. Elam Sr. Interment will be in Shiloh Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Friday. The family will receive friends at the residence. Crocker Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Jean I. Watford, 64, of 2525 E. Washington St., Apt. 805-H, Suffolk, died July Saturday, 14, 2001. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Tabernacle UCC Church. Burial will be in the Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery and Mausoleum. Peebles Funeral Home is in charge.

Lutrelle V. Lane, 85, of 2513 Godwin Blvd., Suffolk, died Monday, July 16, 2001 in Nansemond Pointe. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Peebles Funeral Home. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.

Nathaniel K. Warren
Nathaniel Kelton Warren, 80, of Suffolk, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, in Obici Hospital. A native of Boykins, he was the widower of Betty Vick Warren, and the son of the late Walter Roy Warren and Hattie Pearle Smith Warren. He was predeceased by a son, Kelton Randall Randy Warren. He was retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a sheet metal mechanic, and then later retired from VDOT as a scale operator. He was a member of First Baptist Church, and a member of the Suffolk Masonic Lodge No. 30, the Portsmouth Scottish Rite, the Khedive Temple of Chesapeake, the Suffolk Shrine Club and Suffolks Elks Lodge No. 685. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in WWII. Kelton Warren was a craftsman who had a special talent for fine woodworking. He shared his crafts and fostered many friendships in the community. He will always be remembered for this generosity and one who enjoyed fishing and had a great appreciation for nature. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia W. and James C. Dennis of Raleigh, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey E. and Pauline W. Warren of Suffolk; grandchildren, Autumn Faith Warren, Erica Joy Warren and Angela Grace Warren, Kimberly D. DuBose and her husband, Irvin, and Scott Clifford Dennis; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home with Dr. David Chauncey officiating. Interment will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Sidney F. Robert W. Mansfield
Robert W. Mansfield, a resident of Williamsburg, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001. Mr. Mansfield was a Army veteran of WWII, fought in the 'Battle of the Bulge' at Omaha Beach. He was a member of the VFW Post 2582 and DAV Chapter 5. He served his Lord as a deacon in First Baptist Church, North Main Street, and in Wilroy Baptist Church, both in Suffolk, and was an active member of James River Baptist Church in Williamsburg. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth S. Mansfield; three daughters, Vickie M., and her husband, Chris Cahoon, Brenda M., and her husband, Robert Holland, and Robin and Jerry Hudson; four grandchildren, Jonathan Hooland, Kelly Turner, Grant Hudson and Lorraine Hudson; two brothers, Herbert Mansfield, and his wife, Alice, and Lester Mansfield, and his wife, Margaret; and many nieces and nephews. The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery, Suffolk. Louise Jernigan Holland, 84, of Kenyon Road, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001 at her residence. A native of Nansemond County, she was the widow of W. Beverly Holland, and a daughter of the late Archie Tesmon Jernigan and Maggie Carter Jernigan. She was an honor graduate of Holland High School in 1936. She had retired as a sales clerk from F.W. Woolworth. She was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church, the Bethlehem Christian Church Fellowship, Ladies Star Circle and the Prime Time Singers. She was a member of the Liberty Spring Senior Citizens Group, a past member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter Sinai No. 18, and the Holy Neck Homemakers Club. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Holland Harrison and husband, Michael, of Chesapeake; a son and daughter-in-law, W. Thomas Holland and wife, Barbara, of Suffolk; a son-in-law, Bobby F. Dale of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Michele Fowler, Mark Franklin Dale, Bryan Holland and Sean Kerlee; six great-grandchildren, Christopher Dale, Leigh Ann Dale, Payton Kerlee, Lincoln Kerlee, Kaitlin Gudger, and Cody Gudger; a sister, Marjorie J. Margaret Elizabeth Copeland March, 94, of Suffolk, died Monday, Feb. 4, 2002. Born on Nov. 27, 1907 in Nansemond County, she was the daughter of the late Christopher Columbus and Juliette Pierce Copeland, and widow of Mills J. March. Mrs. March was a member of Holy Neck United Church of Christ, its Ladies' Bible Class and Women's Fellowship. She was a member of the Box Elder Homemaker's Club, Box Elder Pollyanna Club, the Holy Neck Friendly Fellowship, and Liberty Spring Senior Citizen's Club. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Paige March and W. Randolph Thomas of Boalsburg, Pa.; sons and daughters-in-law, William C. March, Mills A. and Sharon March, all of Suffolk, Norman K. and Ann G. March of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Frank A. March, Mills Hunter March, David H. March, Ann Firman March, Horton Wray March, Paul Thomas, Sarah Thomas; and great-grandchildren, Jessica, Will and Matt March. Madison Leigh Holland, infant daughter of Tommy and Fran Holland of Cypress Road, Portsmouth, died in Norfolk on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002. In addition to her parents, Tommy and Fran Holland; she was survived by her paternal grandparents, Tom and Anita Holland of Suffolk; maternal grandparents, Sonny and Jean Cobb of Chesapeake; paternal great-grandmother, Clara Hicks of Suffolk; maternal great-grandmother, Frances McDonald of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; two aunts, Tanya Cobb and Tammy Cobb; two uncles, Sonny Cobb and Ricky Cobb; two cousins, Wade and Grace Cobb; and extended family members and close friends. Fleet Hallett Glenn, age 72, son of the late Russell B. and Mary S. Glenn of Old Myrtle Road., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. Charles H. Wood
Charles H. Wood Sr., 86, of the 3700 block of Nansemond Parkway, peacefully entered his eternal home on Feb. 2, 2002. He was the widower of Annie Marie Wood. A native of Hertford County, N.C. and a resident of Suffolk for over 60 years, he was a World War II Army Veteran and had retired from the Norfolk Naval Air Station after 36 years. He was a member of the Tabernacle Christian United Church of Christ where he served on the Senior Usher Board. He also was a member of the Nansemond Parkway Civic League and was a member of the former Drivers' Odd Fellows Lodge No. 2627. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Lillian Wood; a son, Charles H. Wood Jr., and three brothers, Joe, John and George Wood. Survivors include his two daughters, Princetta Bowman and husband, James; and Cora Lee Wood, both of Baltimore, Md.; one stepson, Horace Harrington and wife, Josephine, of Laurinburg, N.C.; four sisters, Martha Morings and Elizabeth Green of Chesapeake; Estella Jones and husband, Alex, and Emma Cross and husband, Vernon, of Suffolk; three sisters-in-law, Rose Mary Wood, Mattie Wood, and Lillie Goffigan of Suffolk; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and wonderful neighbors. He was a loving and caring relative and friend. Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday, Feb. 7 in Tabernacle Christian United Church of Christ, Suffolk by Dr. Carlton Upton Sr., with Peebles Funeral Home in charge. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Alex and Estelle Jones of 3724 Nansemond Parkway and will assemble there at 11 a.m. for the procession on Thursday.

Mrs. Stephanie Yvette Bailey, 33, of 114 Nancy Dr., Suffolk, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Edenton, N.C. she was a daughter of Wesley Mozell, and the late Mary Holley, and the adopted daughter of Fitzhugh and Evangline Edwards. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Joseph and Mary W. Holley, and Wesley E. and Rosa Mozell. She was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, was a manager of a McDonalds Restaurant, and was a 1986 graduate of Forest Glenn High School. She is survived by her husband, Rufus Bailey; daughter, Jasmine Rene Edwards; son, Kalil Rashad Bailey; two stepsons, Leshawn Demiel and Shaquan Miller; sister, Ann Staton; five brothers, Wesley Mozell Jr., James L. Holley, and his wife, Stella, Mackell Holley, and his wife, Katina, James M. Green, and his wife, Gail, and William D. Green, and his wife, Mary; three aunts, Carolyse W. Ashe, Jessie Mizzell and Tency Eason; and several other relatives and friends. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Piney Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Eugene Wiggins. Gould, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Patrick Henry and Flora Pierce Robertson, and widow of Lycurqus Jerome Small. Mrs. Rountree was predeceased by her sons, Henry Malcolm Small, L.J. Small Jr., and her granddaughter, Keely Dean Small. Mrs. Rountree formerly worked at Planters, had retired from J.C. Penney Co., and then worked for Barr Brothers Jewelry Co. Survivors include her sisters, Elsie Garrison of Chesapeake, Elizabeth Byrum of Corapeake, N.C., and Gladys Andrews of Richmond; daughters-in-law, Mildred H. Small of Suffolk, Rita D. Small of Greensboro, N.C.; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. Jesse L. Williams Jr.
Jesse Lyonia Williams Jr., 85, of Suffolk, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002 in his home. Born on Nov. 25, 1916 in Nansemond County, he was the son of the late Mignon Delane Johnson and Jesse Lyonia Williams Sr., widower of Dorothy Virginia Griffin Williams, and brother of the late Eleanor W. Troiano. Mr. Williams was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and a sixth-generation farmer who had a keen love of the land and quality horses and cattle. During WWII he served in the 101st Division of the 3rd Army and participated in the Allied drive across France, Belgium, Germany and the Battle of the Bulge. Survivors include his daughter, Delane Williams Porter; sons, Jesse D. Williams, Travis W. Williams, and a sister, Nell W. Williams, all of Suffolk; grandchildren, Jesse A. Williams, G. Brooke Williams, and Eleanor M.M. Porter. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery.
