Mrs. Lillian Virginia Patterson Anderson, age 71, passed away Monday, December 1, 2003 in the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Lillian was born August 5, 1932 in Saltville, VA to James and Magnolia Wilson Patterson. She attended the Carnegie High School, Marion, VA and was a member of the First Baptist Church, Meadowview, VA. She retired from Raytheon with twenty-five years of service and was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Herman Anderson, I. Left to mourn her passing are a son, Harry H. Anderson, II, Bristol, VA, daughters, Dorothy Jane Martin, Bristol, VA and Karen Anderson, Bristol, TN, a brother, James Patterson, Enas, PA, sisters, Mary Delapp, Bristol, VA, Iris Cloyd, Bristol, VA, Sue Bradley Glade Spring, VA, Patricia Goins, Bristol, VA, grandchildren, Coretta Ocasio, Dion Bradley, Harry H. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, December 4, 2003 at noon in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Shelton, Dr. W. A. Johnson, Rev. Donald Daniels, Sr., and Rev. William Henry Jenkins
Mr. William Henry Jenkins, 75, of Abingdon passed away Monday December 1, 2003 At Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Survivors include his wife: Ella Mae Jenkins; daughters: Kimberly Dawn Martin of Florida; Elizabeth Dutrow of Front Royal, VA; Ruby Kay Butler of Abingdon; three sons: Billy, Steven, and Wayne Jenkins of Front Royal, VA; two step-sons: Jimy Goodman of Chilhowie; Anthony Lockhart of Front Royal; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother: James Jenkins of Lakeland, FL; several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be: Jake Stillwell, Jimmy Goodman, Charlie Mutter, George Burster, and Charles Jenkins. A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday – December 4, 2003 at 11:00 A. M. at The National Cemetery at Mountain Home, Tennessee. Reverend Ernest Church and Reverend Darrell Martin will officiate. The family will receive friends Thursday from 9-9:45 A. Elmer Jackson Caldwell
Mr. Elmer Jackson Caldwell, 63, of Abingdon died Thursday December 4, 2003 at Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native of Wise County, Mr. Caldwell had lived here for the past 28 years. He retired from Norfolk and Southern Railroad after 37 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents: Roy and Ruth Steele Caldwell. Survivors include his wife: Joyce Smith Caldwell; one daughter and son-in-law: Rebecca and Darryl Wise; two sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Edwina Caldwell and Scott and Valeria Caldwell; five granddaughters: Sarah, Rachel and Heather Wise and Megan and Mandy Caldwell; two grandsons: Morgan Caldwell and Jacob Caldwell all of Abingdon; two brothers: Ronnie Caldwell and wife Jettie of Coeburn and Ernest (Ernie) Caldwell and wife Patricia of Wise; four sisters: Betty Brown and husband Larkin of Burlington, NC; Judy Maine of Coeburn; Glenna Hicks and husband Kenneth of Coeburn and Donna McDilda of Blountville, TN. Katherine L. Edmondson
Mrs. Katherine Lester Edmondson, 83, of Meadowview died Thursday December 4, 2003 at her home. Mrs. Edmondson was born Dec. 27, 1919 in the Maple Grove Community of Washington County to the late W. G. Lester and Elizabeth Brodie Lester. She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church. She was a 1940 graduate of Madison College. Mrs. Edmondson was an elementary school teacher in Abingdon and Meadowview and retired from there after 38 years. She was a member of Meadowview Home Demonstration Club and Emory Community Club. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Frank H. Edmondson; two brothers: Bill Lester and Fred B. (Dot) Lester and a special friend, Francis Flannagan. Survivors include one son: Frank (Bucky) Edmondson and wife Betty of Abingdon; two daughters: Susan Edmondson of Bristol, VA and Kathy and husband Ron Owens of Signal Mountain, TN; one brother: John K. (Kit) Lester of Abingdon; grandchildren: Elizabeth and Brody Owens; Hunter and Davis Edmondson; a special friend: Zola Nelson. Funeral services will be held Sunday December 7, 2003 at 2:00 P. Mrs. Thada Ernestine Arrington Wright, age 71, died Friday, December 5, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Wright was born September 3, 1932 to the late Hadley and Leona Castle Arrington. She was a retired bookkeeper and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include her husband: Kent Wright; two daughters: Cyntia Rees and husband George of Atlanta, GA; Leisa Wright Moseley of Raleigh, NC; one brother: James Arrington of Grundy; one sister: Jean Arrington of Abingdon; a cousin: Shirley Stump of Bristol, VA; three grandchildren: Cameron and Courtney Rees and Lauren Moseley. Funeral services will be held Monday December 8, 2003 at 1:00 P. M. at Farris Funeral Chapel. Rev. Warren Wilson will officiate. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Mrs. Nancy Alice Whittaker, age 68, died Friday, December 5, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She attended the Rich Valley United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, Jack Whittaker; a daughter, Jackie Whittaker of Abingdon; a son, Jeffrey Whittaker of Abingdon; a sister and brother-in-law, Dora Lee Hampton and Roy Hampton of Abingdon; a sister-in-law, Geneva McCormick of Bristol, VA and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Monday, December 8, 2003 in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Darrel Ray officiating. Interment will follow in the cemetery. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the Mausoleum Chapel by 10:50 A.M. Monday. Susie F. Taylor
Susie F. Taylor, age 60, passed away Saturday December 6, 2003 at her residence. Susie was a native of Dickenson County, VA and lived and worked in Richmond, VA several years before moving to Abingdon twenty-seven years ago. She attended Tumbling Creek Primitive Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, Estil and Zephyr Colley Taylor and two sisters, Neeshia-Brown Taylor and Jane Lee Taylor. Survivors include three brothers, Bob Taylor, Kingsport, TN, Jimmy Taylor, Abingdon, VA and Niles Taylor, Richmond, VA, three nephews, Dean Taylor, Jason Taylor and Johnathan Taylor and a niece, Adriene Taylor. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday December 10, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Elder Garnell Gilbert and Elder Noah Edwards officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Mrs. Ruth Campbell, age 74, went to the bosom of Abraham on the 8th of December, 2003. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Mr. E. T. Campbell, her son, Mr. Bryan Campbell and wife, Linda, Charlotte, NC, her daughter, Ms. Lisa Campbell, Meadowview, VA, her grandson, Mr. Bryan Campbell, Jr. and his wife, Sherry, Abingdon, VA, her granddaughter, Mrs. Penny Hodge and husband, Ray, Clover, SC, much loved great grandson, Dylan Cole Hodge, her sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Hagy and husband, Charles, Watauga, TN, Mrs. Evelyn Lowe, Damascus, VA and Mrs. Dorcas Saltz, Abingdon, VA, one brother, Mr. Louis Camper, Abingdon, VA, numerous nieces and nephews. James H. Fulbright
Major James H. Fulbright, U. S. Marine Corp,(Retired), age 86 died Saturday December 6, 2003 in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Major Fulbright served his country with distinction as a member of the U. S. Marine Corp for twenty-eight years. He completed tours of duty in Korea, Japan and Vietnam and also served in World War II. Major Fulbright received the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat distinguishing Device from Air Station Commanding Officer, Colonel Louis H. Steman. He received the citation for meritorious service and organizational ability as Aircraft Maintenance Officer of Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron 13, 1st Marine Air Craft Wing while in the Republic of Vietnam. He was a member of the Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church , Bristol, VA. Survivors include his wife, Harriet Dolinger Fulbright, a daughter, Barbara Fulbright Finger and husband, John, Rock Hill, SC, a son, Jim Fulbright and wife, Glenda, Johnson City, TN, two sisters, Betty Jean Dawson and Bea Stephenson both of Henderson, Nevada. The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday December 10, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Markel officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Margaret McConnell
Sarah Margaret McConnell, 84, died Tuesday morning, December 9th, 2003, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Miss Sarah Margaret McConnell, of the Green Spring Community, was a retired school teacher, having taught in Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee, most recently in the Kingsport, Tennessee system. She was educated at Virginia Intermont, Radford University and Columbia University. She had talents in art, music, and writing. She enjoyed nature and was an avid gardener. A benefactor of social programs, she helped out those around her and provided homes for the needy. A life long member of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church, she played the piano for churches and schools where she taught. She taught Sunday School and Bible School. She was devoted to the care of her mother during her mother’s long illness. Preceding her in death were her parents, Guy and Mary Thomas McConnell, and her brothers, Fred A., Sr., and Marvin H. McConnell. Surviving are one brother, Tom McConnell, three sisters-in-law, Amelia B. McConnell, Betty B. McConnell, and Edna S. Juanita K. Smith
Mrs. Juanita K. Smith, 97, of Meadowview died Tuesday December 9, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Smith was born May 29, 1906 in Washington County to the late Walter J. and Minnie Hope Keller. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, VA, a homemaker and a member of Meadowview United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell T. Smith, Sr.; two brothers, Frank Keller and Blair Keller, Sr.; one sister, Naomi Grant. Survivors include one son: Russell “Tommy” Smith, Jr. and wife Helen of Meadowview; two granddaughters: Karen Leah Smith and Debra Lynn Smith both of Meadowview; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express a special thank you to Robin Smith and to all the staff of Grace Healthcare and also to the third floor staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital for the wonderful care extended to Mrs. Smith. Danny E. Osborne
Mr. Danny Everett Osborne, Sr., 56 of Glade Spring died Wednesday December 10, 2003 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Mountain Home, TN. A native and life long resident of Washington County, Danny served in the United States Marine Corps. He did two tours of duty in Vietnam, receiving the Purple Heart and many other distinguished metals. He was retired from the Washington County School Board and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Grace Trivett Osborne; his son, Danny Everett Osborne, Jr.; his brother, Ronnie Osborne, Sr.; his sister: Peggy Osborne. Survivors include his father: R. M. Osborne of Damascus; two sons: David Osborne and wife Sherri; Michael Osborne and wife Susan; one daughter: Melissa Akers and husband Darren all of Abingdon; one brother: Bob Osborne of Damascus; two sisters: Kay Seymore and husband Vernie of Abingdon; Claudine Owen and husband Henry of South Boston; one sister-in-law: Judy Osborne of Abingdon; four grandchildren: Darren Lee Akers, Chance Osborne, Lindsey Osborne and Tosha Megginson. Darlene S. Harmon
Mrs. Darlene Stinson Harmon of Bristol departed this life and went to be with her Lord whom she praised every day of her life. Mrs. Harmon was born in Russell County to the late Troy Remley Stinson and Susie Honaker Stinson. She was a self-employed realtor/broker and the owner and operator of Harmon and Associates. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Richard James Russell, 52, Myrtle Beach, S.C. died unexpectedly Thursday, December 11, 2003. He was born and raised in Washington County, VA. He is the son or Richard Russell of Abingdon, Virginia. James was self-employed. He was preceded in death by his mother, Hattie Wilson Russell and brother, David Russell. Survivors include his wife Gloria Russell, Myrtle Beach, SC; son, Richard James Russell, Jr., Bristol, TN; two daughters, Juanita Lester Carver, Camp May, NJ; April Dawn Carver, Drexel, NC; one step-daughter, Tracey Huchel; two brothers, Emmett Russell, Bristol, TN; Larry Russell, Hudson, NC; one sister, Mildred Rosenbalm Bradshaw, Abingdon, VA and several grandchildren. Robert R. Cook
Mr. Robert “Bob” Roy Cook, age 51, died Thursday, December 11, 2003 at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. Born in Smyth County on July 13, 1952, he was a son of the late Joseph Harrison Cook and Ellen Norris Cook Bob was a member of the Alvarado Bible Church. He is survived by his brother Joseph H. Cook and wife Sandy of the Alvarado Community; three sisters, Charlotte Ward and husband Pete of Abingdon; Susan Carol Sutphin and husband Mason of Eden, NC; Betty Lyons and husband Benny of Marion, VA; three nephews, three nieces and several special great nieces and great nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Sunday, December 14, 2003 in the Old Glade Presbyterian Church with Brother Donald Denton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Casket bearers will be Richard Guinn, Dewey Sweet, Craig Milhorne, Dean Smith, Dave Freeman, and Bobby Wilson. Bertie Mae Scott
Bertie Mae Scott, age 70, died Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was born on August 23, 1933 in Washington County and was a daughter of the late Wyndham Johnson and Edna Short Johnson. Bertie was a member of Blackwell’s Chapel Union Church. She is survived by a foster daughter, Linda Wolfe of Emory, VA; four step children, Frances D. Hockett and Ralph E. Scott both of Emory, VA; Mary C. Willey of Dover, DE and Charles W. Scott of Camp Hill, PA; three sisters, Pauline E. Poston of Glade Spring, VA; Sadie Ruth Eldridge of Meadowview, VA and Lillian O. Hayden of Chilhowie, VA; eleven grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 A.M., Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at the graveside in Blackwell’s Chapel Cemetery with Rev. Scott Spence officiating. . Casket bearers will be Eddie Arnett, Doug Hardin, Allen Rush, Joe Scott, Curtis Scott, Clyde Scott, Mike Hoback and Bill Farris. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 AM Tuesday. In keeping with the wishes of Bertie, there will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, December 17, 2003, at 1:00 PM in the Painter Creek Church of Christ with Mr. Richard Gaminde officiating. Mr. West will be taken to the church at 5:00 PM Tuesday where the family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM and a song service will be held. MRS. JESSIE B. HUTTON, age 84, died Saturday, December 13, 2003 at the Smyth County Community Hospital. She was born in Bluefield, West Virginia and had lived most of her life in Glade Spring, Virginia. Mrs. Vivian Louise Glass Sandefur, age 76, passed away Tuesday December 16, 2003 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Wayne Alton Crosswhite
Mr. Wayne Alton Crosswhite, age 62, went to be with the Lord on December 17, 2003. Wayne was born June 21, 1941 in Washington County, Virginia to the late Lawry and Grace Rhudy Crosswhite. A brother, James Crosswhite and an infant daughter, Patricia Crosswhite, also preceded him in death. He was a very special, loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Wayne was an active and faithful member of the Little Rock Baptist Church. Wayne was employed with Royal Moulding Limited, Atkins, VA. Mr. Danny Lee Childress, 63, of Kingsport died Tuesday Dec. 16, 2003 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport. A native of Washington County, VA, Mr. Childress was the son of the late Hurley and Carrie Davenport Childress. He was the owner of C and H Rentals in Kingsport. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Childress and a son, Jeffrey Childress both of Bristol, TN, sisters-in-law, Shirley Wagner, Glade Spring, VA and Helen Smith, Meadowview, VA, a brother-in-law, Tommy Smith, Meadowview, VA, several aunts, uncles and cousins. Mrs. Virginia Alice Martin Necessary, age 92, died Wednesday, December 17, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was a native of Tannersville, VA and had lived in Washington County, over thirty years. Mrs. Necessary attended Meadowview United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Necessary; a son, Bob Necessary; a daughter-in-law, Irene B. Necessary, a daughter, Dolores Necessary, her parents, six brothers, and three sisters. She is survived by her grandchildren: Tom Necessary of Abingdon, Jeff Necessary of Surfside Beach, SC and Kim Necessary Worley of Roswell, GA; her great grandchildren: Lance, Connor, and Brooke Worley of Roswell, GA and Hayley Necessary of Abingdon, VA; two sisters; Betty Lezzer of Berkley Springs, WV and Jane Martin of Lynchburg, VA; several beloved sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews. Evelyn J. Grant
Evelyn June Grant, age 77, of the Bethel Community, went home to be with the Lord On Thursday, December 18, 2003 in Johnston Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born on June 6, 1926, she was the loving daughter of the late Frank Grant and Lettie Maiden Grant. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Lacy Marshall Grant. She was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church and attended Temple Baptist Church in Abingdon. She is survived by two sisters Edith Whittaker of Abingdon; Vivian Parker and husband Fred of Abingdon; a brother Frank Grant and wife Pauline of Bristol, VA; nieces, Eula Grant (her caregiver), Louise Dye, Shirley Rhoten, Mary Schunke, Betty Gayle McCall, Martha Ann Keesee, Kathy Trivett, Trish Estep, nephews, Bob Grant, John Grant, Bill Grant, Jim Grant, Tim Grant, Freddie Parker, Frankie Gene Whittaker and Rick Trivett, two special great-nephews, who helped take care of her, Thomas and David Waugh and several other great nieces and nephews as well as several great- great nephews. William K. Sykes
Mr. William Kenneth Sykes, age 65, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Friday, December 19, 2003 in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Kenneth was born March 24, 1938 in Russell County, VA. He received an honorable discharge from the U. S. Army and was a longtime member and deacon of the Midway Baptist Church. He retired from the United Parcel Service with 31 years of service. He was an avid hunter, gardener and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Henry and Georgia Hazel Nash Sykes, Brothers, Arvil Eugene Sykes and Clyde Ellis Sykes. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Yvonne Sykes, two daughters, Pam Williams and husband, Dave, Lisa Johnson and husband, Greg, two sons, Doug Sykes and wife, Julie and Stephen Sykes, sisters-in-law, Froncie Sykes and Shirley Sykes, grandchildren, Jessica Sykes, Meghan Sykes, Jordon Johnson, step-grandchild, Rachel Johnson. Joseph McKee Colley
Mr. Joseph McKee Colley, 79 of Abingdon died Friday December 19, 2003 at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion. A native of Saltville, Mr. Colley spent most of his life in Richmond. He moved to Abingdon in 1991. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and was a welder. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Licata Colley. Survivors include two brothers: Wiley Colley of Marion; Al Colley of Suwanee, GA; one sister: Lois Tolbert of Saltville. A graveside service will be held Tuesday December 23, 2003 at 10:00 A. M. at Elizabeth Cemetery in Saltville. There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home.

John Marshall Grant
John Marshall Grant, age 58, went to be with the Lord Saturday, December 20, 2003 at his home in Rantoul, Illinois after a lengthy illness. He was born March 18, 1945, the son of the late Marshall and Eleanor Grant of Abingdon. He was raised in the Bethel Community and was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church. Willa Gray "Gay" Merritt
Willa Gray “Gay” Merritt, age 73, passed away on Saturday, December 20, 2003 at the Wellmont Hospice House after a courageous battle with cancer. She will be greatly missed but fondly remembered. Born on August 13, 1930 in Wayland, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Ollie and Gypsy Elkins. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Watkins. After graduating from Bowling Green Business College, she married Jack D. Merritt and spent most of her married life in Grundy, VA before moving to Abingdon in 1995. While in Grundy, she was a bookkeeper, business manager, and she was active in Girl Scouts of America for many years. She was a member of the Grundy United Methodist Church.

Richard Arthur Beltz
Mr. Richard Arthur (Richie) Beltz, 28, of Abingdon died Friday December 19, 2003 at his home. Richie was born Feb. 24, 1975 in Ogden, Utah. He had resided in Washington County for the past 23 years. He was a 1994 graduate of John Battle High School where he played on the football team. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder commonly known as manic depression. On October 5, 2003, he was the subject of an article in the Bristol Herald Courier on life with bipolar. He became active in NAMI ( National Alliance for the Mentally Ill). He enjoyed helping people with mental illnesses and going to schools to speak with students about his condition. He was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of Lighthouse Clubhouse in Bristol. The family wishes to thank Lighthouse Clubhouse for the impact they have made in Richie’s life. He is survived by his parents: Dick and Kay Beltz; one sister: Kimberly Lynn Beltz of Bristol, VA; three uncles: James Beltz and Gary Beltz of Minnesota; Alexander Clark McKean of Florida. Mrs. Gae Crowe Winesett,, age 78, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at the Bristol Wellmont Hospice House. She was born on March 5, 1925 in Washington County, Virginia to the late J. W. Crowe and Maggie Buchanan Crowe. She had lived most of her life in Washington County, was a retired employee of the Buster Brown Company and was a longtime member of the Friendship Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, C. E. Winesett; four daughters: Jo Davis and husband Howard, Andrea Newman and husband Fred, Sandra Heath and husband Glenn all of the Friendship Community, and Tracy Coggins and husband Berry of Gray, TN; seven grandchildren; Eddie Davis, Anna Newman, Jeremy Weaver, Cathy Newman, Jeremiah Weaver, Charlie Coggins and Kasey Coggins; three great grandchildren; Sydney, Christopher and Seth. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:15 P.M., Friday, December 26, 2003 at the graveside in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Rev. David Sizemore officiating. Interment will follow. Gladys Irene Hogg
Mrs. Gladys Irene Gray Hogg, 85, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday Dec. 23, 2003 at home. Mrs. Hogg was born on April 18, 1918 in Acme, West Virginia to the late Marshall Gray and Mollie Harlow Gray. She was reared in Summersville, WV and married Hiram Hogg who was a native of Roxanna, KY. She had resided in Abingdon since 1976 coming from Fayetteville, West Virginia. She was a homemaker, mother and wife and a member of Scenic Park Baptist Church. Surviors include her husband, Hiram Hogg; three daughters: Debra Garland of Bristol, VA; Betty Reddy of Cocoa Beach, FL; Shirley Alvandian of Locust Grove, VA; two sisters: Sylvia Hale of Bristol, VA; Crinthia Crawford of Summersville, West Virginia; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday December 26, 2003 at 12:00 Noon at Farris Funeral Chapel. Rev. Luke Martin and Rev. Austin Cook will officiate. Christina D. Henderson
Mrs. Christina Davenport Henderson, age 72, of the Lindell Community, passed away Wednesday December 24, 2003 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Christina was a lifelong resident of Washington County and a member of the Lindell Church of Christ. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and was preceded in death by her parents, Moody and Bessie Counts Davenport and a half-sister, Phyllis Browning. Survivors include her husband, D. N. Henderson, a son, Eddie Henderson both of the Lindell Community, brothers, Tom Davenport and wife, Augustine, San Mateo, Florida, Kenneth Davenport and wife, Shirley, Hayter’s Gap, VA, Edmund Davenport and wife, Linda, Meadowview, VA, her twin sister, best friend and soul mate, Lorene McCray and husband, Ralph, Hayter’s Gap, VA, Dorothy Malone and husband, Harold, Bristol, VA, Nellie Morris, Hayter’s Gap, VA and the late Robert Morris, grandchildren, Melissa Henderson and Bryan Henderson both of Emory University, Atlanta, GA. Cecil Mullins
MR. CECIL MULLINS, age 82, died Thursday, December 25, 2003, at the Wellmont Hospice House. He was born April 27, 1921 in Dickenson County, Virginia and moved to Bristol in 1965. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a seaman first class in World War II and later worked at the Clinchfield and Eastover Coal Mines until his retirement. Cecil was a member of the Clintwood Masonic Lodge and a faithful member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Bristol. Charlie M. Pippin
Mr. Charlie M. Pippin, age 75, died Saturday, December 27, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born on April 16, 1928 in Washington County, he was a son of the late Druie Pippin and Lilly Boardwine Pippin. He was a lifelong resident of the Greendale Community. Mr. Pippin was a U. S. Army Veteran. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and dearly loved his dogs Rusty and Brownie. Mr. Samuel Dale Wilson, age 54, passed away Thursday, December 25, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital Emergency Room. He had served in the U. S. Marines during Vietnam and attended the Watauga Chapel of Green Spring Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed his trips to Florida, gardening, nature and photography. A memorial service and scattering of ashes will be held on Palm Sunday, April 4, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. on the Farm. He is survived by several special friends. Alverta Mae Dennison
Mrs. Alverta Mae Dennison, 87, of Meadowview passed away Monday December 29, 2003 in the Russell County Medical Center. Mrs. Dennison was born May 30, 1916 to Vance and Eve Tolliver. Born on August 23, 1935 in Washington County, she was a daughter of the late James Ted Thomas and Bessie Maxwell Thomas. She was preceded in death by her husband Garnett Preston Lloyd; two brothers, Ted Thomas and Ballard Thomas, and two sisters, Ruth McCray and Helen Griffitts. She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church in Meadowview. Mrs. Mary Hogan Canonico, age 80, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at Wellmont-Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. She was a native of Rockbridge County, VA and was a long time resident of Abingdon, VA. Mrs. Canonico earned a bachelors of science degree in nursing from Georgetown University. During her career, she served as a surgical trauma nurse and nursing administrator. She was a founding member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Abingdon and was preceded in death by her husband Stephen Canonico.

Mr. Martin Van Bates, 63, of Abingdon, died Wednesday Dec. 31, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Bates was born Feb. 14, 1940 in Jenkins, KY to the late Landis D. Bates and Mary L. Hayes Bates. He was a U. S. Army veteran and was stationed in Germany. He was retired from Columbus McKinnon Company after thirty years of service. Anna Lee Call Wright
Mrs. Anna Lee Call Wright, 2012 Sherwood Drive, passed from this life on Wednesday, December 31, 2003. She was born on August 3, 1929 in the Beaver Creek section of Smyth County, Virginia, the second of nine children of Rev. James Henry Call and Anna Blanche Call. In 1947, she married Roy Samuel Wright; they lived most of their 52 years together in Washington County, Virginia. Mr. Wright preceded his wife in death in September, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her father and a brother, Curtis Hufford Call. Mrs. Wright was deeply spiritual and lived her life fearing the Lord and possessing the wisdom and understanding that comes delighting in His commandments. She was a righteous and gracious woman, full of love and compassion. She was a licensed cosmetologist and worked at Buster Brown children’s clothing. She taught Sunday School for many years, primarily at Mahanaim Untied Methodist Church. She was a member of Galilean Baptist Church. It was her expressed wish to be remembered as a good mother. Mrs. Wright is survived by a daughter, Linda Wright Jernigan and husband, Dr. T. Watson Jernigan of Johnson City, TN; her mother, Anna B. Call of Chesapeake, VA; three sisters, Dorothy (Mrs. Ralph) Haynes of Cleveland, TN, Acquilla “Kit” Eldreth of Chesapeake, VA and Millie (Mrs. Joseph) Mansfield of Chesapeake, VA; four brothers, James H.
