Virginia Heninger
Mrs. Virginia Ruth Morgan Heninger, age 89, passed away Saturday January 
3, 2004 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Plasterco, VA 
and was a lifelong resident of Washington County. She was a Presbyterian 
and was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert J. Heninger., sons, 
Johnny and Jimmy. Survivors include a brother, Earl Morgan, Bristol, VA 
and a sister, Ruby Barker, Glade Spring, VA, several nieces and nephews. A 
graveside service will be held Monday January 5, 2004 at 3:00 p.m. in 
Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pastor Tim Norris will officiate. Pallbearers 
will be Robert Barker, Coy Barker, Jr., Gerald Norris, Michael Church, 
William Morgan, Reece White. Flowers will be accepted or memorial 
contributions to be made to your favorite charity. The family will receive

Nellie Hess
Mrs. Nellie M. Sword Hess was born in Saltville, VA and resided in 
Bristol, VA. She died Saturday January 3, 2004 at Welmont Hospice House 
after a long illness. She worked at Valley Dale Meat Packers and was a 
member of Victory Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of fifty 
years: Garland Hess; daughter: Barbara Hess Baines and husband Larry 
Baines of Jefferson City, MO; son: Wesley Hess and wife Sharleen Hess of 
Bristol, TN; granddaughter: Brittany Nicole Baines of Jefferson City, MO; 
five stepgrandchildren. A cryptside funeral service will be held Monday 
January 5, 2004 at 11:00 A. M. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens Colonial 
Chapel Mausoleum. Dr. Austin Cook will officiate. Honorary pallbearers 
will be Clinton Hedricks, James Sword, Harry Russell, Johnny Humphrey,

Junior Wright
Mr. Junior Lane 'J.L.' Wright, age 82, passed away 
Sunday January 4, 2004 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He attended the 
Carvosso United Methodist Church and had been a resident of Grace Health 
Care of Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Ray and 
Lena Wann Wright and his wife, Mildred June Wright. Survivors include, a 
brother, Raymond Wright and a sister, Betty Wright both of Abingdon VA, 
one niece, Susan Wright and a great nephew, Christopher Hill. The funeral 
service will be held Tuesday January 6, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. in Farris 
Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charlie Harmon and Rev. Leonard Smith 
officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu 
of flowers, memorials can be made to the Carvosso United Methodist Church, 
19429 Rustic Lane, Abingdon, VA 24210. The family will receive friends

Billie Marie Fleenor
Mrs. Billie Marie Fleenor, 74, passed away Saturday, January 3, 2004, at 
her residence, having fought a courageous battle with heart disease. Mrs. 
Fleenor was born December 21, 1929, in the Benhams Community to the late 
Joe Bascom and Gladys Hutton Fleenor. She was the wife of the late Kenneth 
W. Fleenor, Sr. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was 
preceded in death by her brother, James Roger Fleenor, Sr. She spent her 
entire life in the Benhams Community, where she and her late husband 
farmed. In addition to helping with the farming operation, she was 
principal of the Benhams Elementary School. After the consolidation of the 
community elementary schools, she and her husband operated a general store 
and gas station which also served as the post office for Benhams, 
Virginia, and she was Postmistress. After closing the store, she devoted 
herself to her home and raising her children. When her children started 
school, she became very involved in bettering education in Washington 
County, becoming an advocate for the schools needs. She was very active in 
P. T. A. both on a local level and on the district level serving in 
various offices and helping to establish P.T.A.'s in other schools. 
In 1967, she was honored with a P.T.A. Life Membership. After her children 
graduated, she continued to be an advocate for education, even more so as 
her grandchildren began school. She was retired from Westinghouse 
Corporation, Abingdon, Virginia. She was a devoted member of Camp Ground 
United Methodist Church and served as Sunday School Superintendent for 
many years and was a member of the United Methodist Women. She is survived 
by her children: daughter and son-in-law: Mona and Allen Doss of Damascus, 
VA; son and daughter-in-law: Kenneth W. , II and Terri Fleenor of Bristol, 
Tennessee; Sons: Charlie Joe Fleenor and William A. Fleenor both of 
Bristol, VA; grandchildren: Ernie Doss, Khala Campbell and husband Jason; 
Beth Fleenor, Krystal Watson, Andrew Fleenor, Tessa Fleenor and Kenneth 
Fleenor, III; great-grandson: Brandon Doss. She is also survived by one 
nephew: James Roger Fleenor, Jr. and one niece: LuAnn Jonson; two aunts: 
Ora Bowman of Bristol, VA and Trula Counts of Abingdon. Pallbearers will 
be Arthur McCroskey, Howard Hutton, Sonny Scardo, Terry Lee Scardo, Eugene 
Scardo and Dillard Sproles. Honorary pallbearers will be: Frank Fleenor, 
Carl Leonard, Charles Anderson, Bill DeBoard, Bobby Harless, Jack 
Sprinkle, Frank Stewart and Men of Campground United Methodist Church. 
Funeral services will be held Monday January 5, 2004 at 8:00 P. M. at 
Farris Funeral Chapel. Rev. Keith McGraw and Rev. Roger Ball will 
officiate. The family will receive friends Monday evening before the 
funeral service from 6-7:45 P. M. at the funeral home and other times at 
her residence on Rich Valley Road. A graveside committal service will be 
held on Tuesday January 6, 2003 at 11:00 A. M. at Forest Hills Memory 
Gardens. The family will assemble at Farris Funeral Service at 10:00 A. M. 
on Tuesday and will go in procession to the gravesite. Flowers will be

Homer L. Dixon
Mr. Homer Lee Dixon, age 80, of Green Village, passed away Sunday, January 
4, 2004 at Abingdon Manor. He was born on September 21, 1923 in Dante, 
Virginia to the late Earnest Dixon and Annie Branson Dixon and was also 
preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Brummitt. Mr. Dixon was a retired 
employee of the Virginia Department of Transportation after 40 years of 
service. He was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include his wife of 62 
years, Geneva Dixon; two sons, Billy R. Dixon and wife Carol of Damascus, 
VA and Leroy Dixon and wife Edna of Bristol, TN; a daughter, Ann Newman 
and husband Mickey of Abingdon; six grandchildren and four great 
grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., 
Wednesday, January 7, 2004 in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul 
Price officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. 
Casket Bearers will be Michael Roark, David Arnold, Derek Arnold, Tim 
Fogleman, Travis Dixon, Mickey Newman, Bobby Brummitt and Johnny Mowery.

Mr. Billy Wayne Leonard, age 48, passed away Monday January 5, 2004 in the 
Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his 
father, Walter Leonard. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Sue Leonard, two 
sons, Billy Wayne Leonard, Jr., Bristol, TN, Christopher Allen Leonard, 
Bristol, VA, a daughter, Amanda Sue Leonard, Bristol, VA, his mother,

Barbara J. Burnett
Barbara J. Burnett died Friday, January 9, 2004 at Johnston Memorial 
Hospital in Abingdon after a terminal illness. She is survived by two 
daughters and a son-in-law; Pat Stewart and husband Stoney of Abingdon and 
Daphne Garrett of New Orleans, LA; a sister, Mabel Paulmann of Savannah, 
GA; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A memorial service 
will be conducted at 7:30 P.M., Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Forest 
Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon with 
Rev. Larry Bales and Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating. The family will 
receive friends from 6 - 7:15 P.M. before the memorial service. A 
reception for family and friends will immediately follow the memorial

George Wiley Gregory
MR. GEORGE WILEY GREGORY, age 73, died Friday, January 9, 2004 at the 
Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Washington 
County, Virginia. He was the son of the late William Oscar and Martha 
Lloyd Gregory. Wiley was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in Korea and had 
worked at the Vance Supply Company for over thirty years and worked at the 
Big M farm supply until his health prevented him from working. He was a 
member of the Meadowview United Methodist Church and preceded in death by 
a son, William (Bill) Gregory. Wiley loved the outdoors especially hunting

MRS. JANIE CECIL ELSWICK, age 96, died Saturday, January 10, 2004, at the 
Grace Healthcare Center. She was born August 26, 1907 in Cherokee, West 
Virginia to the late James Boyd and Lottie Cecil. She had lived in Harman, 
Virginia before moving to Abingdon, Virginia. She was of the Church of God 
faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Elswick; brothers, 
Henry Cecil, Charlie Cecil, Woodrow Cecil, Herbert Cecil and sisters, Alva 
Taylor, Gracie Shrewsbury, Sadie Lane, Cosby Gillespie, Bessie McKinney 
and Helen Viers. She is survived by:

Kathy Ann Lewis Moses
Mrs. Kathy Ann Brown Lewis Moses, age 36, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004, 
at her home. She was born in Winchester, Virginia, graduated from Holston 
High School and lived in Damascus, Virginia before moving to Greenville, 
South Carolina. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester W. and

Pearl Robins Bricker
Mrs. Pearl Robins Bricker, died Monday January 12, 2004. Pearl was born 
August 21, 1927 in Russell County, Virginia. She dedicated much of her 
life to helping other people. She was very generous to all of her family 
and to others. She was a life time member of the auxillary of Johnston 
Memorial Hospital and had been named Volunteer of the Year. She was a 
member of the Virginia Rebekah Lodge, Abingdon, VA. She was preceded in 
death by her husband, Charles Richard Bricker and a brother, Beecher 
Robins. Survivors include three brothers and their wives, James A. and 
Eleanor Robins, Charlie and Patsy Robins and Clarence and Frances Robins 
all of Meadowview, VA, numerous nieces and nephews and a special nephew 
and his wife, Mike and Gail Bricker. The funeral service will be held 
Wednesday, January 14, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel.

L. Preston Stevens, Jr.
Mr. L. Preston Stevens, Jr., age 50, went to be with his heavenly father, 
Monday January 12, 2004 at the home of his parents. Preston was a native 
of Abingdon, VA, having graduated from Abingdon High School in 1971, 
setting several records in high school sports. He attended East Tennessee 
State University on a track scholarship and was a 1976 graduate of Emory 
and Henry College, a standout in track and football. He had resided in 
Richmond, VA and Greensboro, NC before returning to Abingdon. Preston was 
a member of the Second Baptist Church, Richmond, VA and was employed with 
Medic Computer Systems, Raleigh, NC for several years. Survivors include 
his parents, Lewis P. and Sallie Woolwine Stevens, Abingdon, VA, his 
children, Lewis Preston 'Skip' Stevens, III, Richmond, 
VA, Robert Walker 'Bucky' Stevens, Greensboro, NC,

John Jay Reese
MR. JOHN JAY REESE, age 58, died Tuesday, January 13, 2004, at the 
Johnston Memorial Hospital. He had lived in Damascus, Virginia for 
fourteen years having moved from Lake Charles, Louisiana. John was a 
member of the Damascus Town Council , Chairman of the Police Committee and 
a member of the Chamber of Commerce where he was a former member of the 
executive board. He had been on the Parks Recreation Committee and the 
Trail Days Festival. He was a member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church 
and the Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge #104 AF & AM. He is survived by:

James Robins
Mr. James (Jim) Robins, 82, died January 13, 2004. Mr. Robins is survived 
by his beloved wife of 55 years, Eleanor Harris Robins; two daughters, 
Lisa Reynolds, Abingdon and Linda Harriger and husband Scott of Pulaski; 
two grandchildren: Jonathan Manili, Winston-Salem, NC; Meghann Harriger 
Edwards of Medford, MA; two brothers: Charlie and Clarence Robins of 
Meadowview. He was one of Jehovah's Witnesses and served as an 
elder in the Meadowview Congregation. Jim Dedicated his life to Jehovah 
God on April 25, 1954 and spent the remainder of his life helping others 
to learn about the Bible. He was a caring individual who put the needs of 
others ahead of his own. He will be remembered for his unselfish love and 
devotion. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the 
staff of Select Specialty Hospital and to Drs. Maria Herman and Robert 
Walker for their exceptional care and concern. Memorial contributions can

Katie Ellis
Katie Ellis, infant daughter of Michael and Mary Elizabeth Ellis, died 
Tuesday, January 13, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. In addition to 
her parents, she is survived by a sister: Kennsington Reign Ellis of the 
home; her grandparents: Clifford Dent, Phyllis Mae Holt, Estella Bouton 
and Bill Canter; her great grandmother: Verti Basford. Private burial 
services will be held at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. 

Frances Isabelle Thayer
Miss Frances Isabelle Thayer, 84, died Wednesday January 14, 2004 at Grace 
Health Care in Abingdon. A native and lifelong resident of Abingdon, Miss 
Thayer was a member of Abingdon United Methodist Church where she served 
on the Administrative Board. She was also a member of the Julia Lake 
Circle. She was a member of Business and Professional Womens Club, 
Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She served as a Pink Lady and was a 
member of Abingdon Senior Center. She worked for many years at County 
Treasurers Office and at Farm Credit. Survivors include one brother: 
Father Charles C. Thayer, Jr. and his wife Evelyn of Abingdon; one nephew: 
Hugh Thayer and his wife Cathy of Sioux Falls, SD; three great nieces and 
nephews: Michele, Grant and Drew Thayer; two first cousins: E. Kate Evans 
and Virginia MacArthur. A memorial service will be held Friday January 16, 
2004 at 3:00 P. M. at Abingdon United Methodist Church. The Reverend Betty 
Reiff will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service at 
the church. A private committal service will follow at Knollkreg Memorial

Michelle C. Pendergast
Michelle Catherine 'Chelley' Pendergast, 37, of 
Brandon, Mississippi, formerly of Abingdon, Virginia and Charlotte, North 
Carolina died Thursday January 15, 2004 in Brandon, Mississippi. Michelle 
was born December 12, 1966 in Charlotte. She was a 1985 honor graduate of 
Abingdon High School. In 1989, she graduated cum laude from Belmont Abby 
College. Michelle had lived in Brandon for the past six months. She was a 
systems analyst in the insurance industry. Survivors include her parents: 
Joe and Cathy Pendergast of Abingdon, VA; paternal grandparents: John and 
Helen Pendergast of Palm Bay, FL; two brothers: Joseph (Pat) Pendergast 
and wife Tena of Round Rock, TX; John F. Pendergast and wife Rebecca of 
Charlotte, NC; one sister: Jennifer (Jenny) and husband James (Jim) 
Mitchell of Meadowview. She had a niece and two nephews who dearly loved 
their 'Aunt So So' : John (Jack) Pendergast, Clayton 
(Clay) Mitchell, and Katherine Renee Pendergast. She is also survived by 
her former husband, Loye Pack and special friends, Jimmy Mullinax and 
Allison Statzer. The family will receive friends Monday January 19, 2004 
from 6-8 P. M. at Abingdon Bible Church, 16210 Elementary Drive Abingdon. 
A memorial service will be held following the visitation at 8 P. M. at 
Abingdon Bible Church. Pastor Paul Bufford will officiate. A committal 
service will be held Tuesday January 20, 2004 at 10 AM at Forest Hills

Erma Hazel Woodward Orr
Mrs. Erma Hazel Woodward Orr, age 87, passed away Friday January 16, 2004 
in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the 
Old Glade Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by her husband, 
Roby Lee Orr, Sr. Survivors include her sons, Roby Lee Orr, Jr. and wife, 
Judy, Damascus, VA, Walter A. Orr and wife, Patricia A., Cumberland, VA, 
Joe Orr and wife, Debbie, Meadowview, VA, Jack Orr, Glade Spring, VA, her 
daughters, Ruth Ann Arington, Glade Spring, VA, Eloise Thomas and husband, 
Joe, Johnson City, TN, Linda Marie Cieri and husband, Joe, Graves Mill, 
VA, a brother, Ewell Woodward, Saltville, VA, a sister, Nannie Bell 
Lester, Bluefield, VA, numerous grandchildren, numerous great

William C. Mullins, Jr.
William C. Mullins, Jr., age 60, went to be with the Lord Friday, January 
16, 2004. Mr. Mullins was a native of Dickenson County but had resided in 
Bristol for the past 29 years. He was a retired businessman and a Trustee

Myrtle B. Hardin
Mrs. Myrtle B. Hardin, age 83, passed away Thursday January 15, 2004 at 
her residence. Myrtle was born in Algoma, WVA, and lived most of her life 
in Coalwood, WVA. She was a member of the Coalwood United Methodist 
Church. She moved to Abingdon in 1989 and was preceded in death by her 
husband, Fred Hardin. Survivors include a son, William Frederick Hardin, 
Sterling, VA, two daughters, Sue Hardin Carroll and Carol Ann Hardin, both 
of Abingdon, VA, three grandsons and six great grandchildren. A memorial 
crypt side service will be conducted Sunday, January 18, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. 
in the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel, Bluewell, WVA with Rev. 
John Stapleton officiating. There will no visitation in the funeral home.

Robert Sells
Mr. Robert Sells, age 79, passed away at home after a long illness on 
January 18, 2004. He was born on October 14, 1924 in McDowell County, WV 
to the late R. J. and Lucy Sells. He was a former resident of Switchback, 
WV where he worked for Consolidated Coal Company at Ackman, WV. He had 
been a resident of Abingdon for over 50 years and retired from the 
Virginia Department of Transportation in 1988 with 30 years of service. He 
was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include his wife, Edna Flinchum Sells; 
a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Teresa Sells of Abingdon; two 
grandchildren, Kaselin Sells and Chandra Parris and husband Kevin; two 
great grandchildren, Kerrington Parris and Greyson Parris; a brother, 
Hubert Sells of Abingdon; a sister, Callie Short of Abingdon and several 
nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. 
Wednesday in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory 
Gardens with Rev. Wendell Harlow officiating. Interment will follow in the 
cemetery. Casket bearers will be William Bott, Sammy Sells, Bobby Leonard, 
Shannon Weddle, Kevin Parris and Wayne Sells. Those attending the service 
are asked to assemble at the Mausoleum chapel by 12:50 P.M., Wednesday.

John J. Mahaffey
John J. Mahaffey, age 83, died Monday, January 19, 2004 at his home. He 
was a native of Abingdon, VA and the son of the late John and Mary Keys 
Mahaffey. Mr. Mahaffey was a veteran of the Army Air Corp during World War 
II, serving in Africa and Italy. He worked for the former Journal 
Virginian newspaper in Abingdon and for the Bristol Herald Courier for 13 
years before moving to Houston, Texas. He worked for the Houston Chronicle 
for 21 years, and then returned to Abingdon in 1986. Mr. Mahaffey enjoyed 
traveling and spending days with his sons in construction projects. He was 
on the Abingdon Senior Citizens Board and also was a volunteer for yard 
work and maintenance for both the Senior Center and The Virginia Creeper 
Trail. Survivors include:

Theodore Darius Moore, Jr.
Theodore Darius Moore, Jr., age 74 died on 01/20/04 in Johnston Memorial 
Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Marlinton, WV on June 20, 
1929 and was the son of the late Theodore D. Moore, Sr. and Mary Cochran 
Moore. Ted was a proud graduate of West Virginia University with a B.S. in 
Mining Engineering. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army and a retiree 
of Clinchfield Coal Company where he was Chief Engineer. Most recently, 
Ted was a resident of Westhaven Retirement Living where he was an avid 
reader of the Bible and enjoyed playing bingo. He was a member of Abingdon 
Baptist Church. Ted was a strong willed survivor of an automobile accident 
in 1977. While it forever changed his life, it never affected his love and 
devotion as a husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Jane 
Shinaberry Moore of Abingdon, VA, five children, and five grandchildren. 
His children are Theodore D. Moore, III of Marlinton, WV, Joseph E. Moore 
and wife Hope Moore of Manteo, NC, Stephanie Moore Costarakis and husband 
Matthew Costarakis of Nashville, TN, John A. Moore of Northern VA, and Amy 
E. Moore of Johnson City, TN. His grandchildren are Magen Moore, Brandon 
Haga, Christine Haga, Sommer Moore, and Joseph Moore, Jr. A service will 
be held at Farris Funeral Chapel at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, 
2004. Dr. Steven Pollard will officiate. Family will receive friends from 
6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Burial will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in

Pearl Mae Young Bare
Ms. Pearl Mae Young Bare, formerly of 701 Dixie Street, Bristol, VA went 
to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at Grace 
Healthcare in Abingdon, VA. She is survived by one son, Bill Young and 
wife, Brenda, grandchildren, Cynthia Jackson and husband, Jerry, Jeff 
Young and wife, Molly, Teresa Hall and husband, Johnny, Sharon Haupt, 
Monica McCall and husband, Frank. Nine great-grandchildren and two 
great-great grandchildren, one brother, Doc Haga, two sisters, Clyde Brunk 
and Stella Riley. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday January 
22, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Scott 
Price, who was so well loved by Ms. Bare, officiating.
Interment will follow in Konnarock, VA

Dochie McClanahan Ferrell
Mrs. Dochie McClanahan Ferrell, age 87, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004, 
at the Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center. She was born June 18, 
1916 in Buchanan County, Virginia to the late Joseph Adam and Pearl Taylor 
McClanahan. She had lived most of her life in Grundy where she and her 
husband operated the Ferrell's Grocery. After her retirement from 
her grocery business in n 1989, she moved to Abingdon, Virginia where she 
enjoyed her love of quilting and and cooking for her family. . She was 
preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Ferrell; a son, Charles D. 
Ferrell; three brothers, Johnny McClanahan, Earl McClanahan and Willie 
McClanahan and two sisters, Abby McClanahan and Ocie Mitchell. She is 
survived by; A daughter, Phyllis Dean Ramey and husband, Robert C. Ramey 
of Abingdon, Va.

Wanda Faye Eastridge
Wanda Faye Eastridge, age 55, died Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Johnston 
Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Born on September 19, 1948 in Russell 
County, She was a daughter of the late Arthur Maiden and Ollie Mae 
Galliher Maiden. Mrs. Eastridge was a Day Care Provider for 35 years and 
had lived in Abingdon most of her life. Her faith was the truth. She is 
survived by her husband, Richard Eastridge; a son, Richard Eastridge, Jr. 
of Abingdon; a special aunt and uncle, Stanford and Shirley Elam of 
Castlewood, VA; her uncles, Willie Elam and Vernon Elam, both of Lebanon 
and Ernest Elam of Nicklesville, VA; special close family members, 
Kathleen, Linda and Arlis Elam and a very special friend, Kim Russell. The 
funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, January 24, 2004 
in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul Viers officiating. Interment 
will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Casket bearers will be Terry

Jeffrey R. Wilson
The Lord called for Jeffrey R. Wilson, age 26, on Saturday, January 24, 
2004 at the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Jeffrey was born on 
January 13, 1978 in Prince William County, Virginia and had lived most of 
his life in Bristol and Washington County. He was employed by U. S. 
Solutions Group as an employee trainer. Jeffrey attended the Shelby Street 
Church of God in Bristol, TN. He is survived by his wife, Amanda Odum 
Wilson; his mother and father, Paul and Deborah Wilson of Bristol, VA; his 
birth father, Fred Wilson and fiance' Chris Dodson of Culpepper, VA; his 
birth mother, Teresa Eastridge of Colonial Beach, VA; three sisters, 
Jeanna Wilson, Renee Brewster, and Lori Beth Wilson all of Colonial Beach, 
VA; grandparents, Roy and Genell Hess of Davenport, VA and Ron and Una 
Smith of Northern, VA; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bobby Odum and 
Peggy Mitchell both of Abingdon; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Tabitha 
and James White of Richmond, VA; his wife's grandmother, Elizabeth 
Mitchell of Abingdon; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many

Helen M. Sholes
GLADE SPRING - Mrs. Helen Marie Sholes passed away Wednesday, Jan. 
28, 2004, at Bristol Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She 
will be forever remembered for her kindness and hospitality to others, 
including helping with the March of Dimes and United Way drives. Mrs. 
Sholes was born in Kingsport and lived most of her life in Glade Spring. 
She was a member of Glade Spring Baptist Church. She was retired from 
Raytheon Corporation in Bristol and worked many years as a caregiver.. She 
was preceded in death by her parents, Carson and Ola Perry, her husband, 
baseball great Leo "Muscle" Sholes, and three sisters, Lillian Salyer, 
Phyllis Wells and Billie Mellons. Surviving are four sons, Ronnie Sholes 
and wife Melissa of Church Hill, Tenn., Tim Sholes and wife Stella of 
Bristol Virginia, Gary Sholes of Kingsport and Gregory Sholes of Glade 
Spring; one daughter, Yvonne Archer and husband Michael of Church Hill; 
one brother, Carson C. Perry Jr. and wife Clara of Kingsport; sisters, 
Mildred Hare of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Evelyn Archer and husband Aaron of 
Kingsport; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and several 
nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, 
at 2 p.m. at Farris Funeral Chapel. Rev. Steve Turner will officiate. 
Entombment will follow in Mount Rose Mausoleum in Glade Spring.

Joyce O'Neal
Mrs. Joyce Ann Rowe O'Neal, of 408 Brookhill Drive, passed away 
Friday, January 30, 2004 at her home. She was born January 7, 1933 in 
Besoco, West Virginia to the late William M. and Dossie G. Cole Rowe. She 
lived for many years in Grundy prior to moving to Abingdon in 1976 and was 
preceded in death by her two brothers, Mont Rowe and Robert Rowe of 
Toledo, Ohio. She was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church 
and a founding member of the Washington County Animal Defense League. She 
loved to read, garden and most of all, being with her family. She is 
survived her husband, Dick O'Neal, Abingdon, VA, two daughters, 
Peggy Haines and husband Greg, Melbourne, Australia, Genie O'Neal 
and husband Walter Smith, Abingdon, VA, Mrs. O'Neal has one 
grandson, Neal Smith and several nieces and nephews. The family will 
receive friends Monday, February 2, 2004 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the 
Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, 
Abingdon, Virginia. Entombment will be private. A special thank you to Dr.

Grace Curd Taylor
Grace Curd Taylor, 90, went to meet the Lord Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004. 
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. William Taylor; one 
sister, Doris Curd Smith; one brother, Joe Curd; one stepsister, Roberta 
Eastridge; and a stepbrother, Charlie Terry. Grace leaves behind one 
brother and a sister-in-law, Morris and Meryl Curd of Meadowview; four 
brothers, John, Epperson, King and J. D. Terry; five nieces, Dora Smith of 
Dry Fork, Va., Diane Smith of Saltville, Vicki Stephenson and Jennifer 
Chapman and Lisa McArter of Meadowview; two nephews, Greg and Jeff Curd of 
Hiram, Ga.; and two great-nieces and four great-nephews. Thanks to Grace 
Health Care for the loving care she received. Funeral services will be 
held Tuesday Feb. 3, 2004, at 11 a.m. at Farris Funeral Service. Rev. Rick 
Cuddy will officiate. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory 
Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 
the funeral home. Pallbearers will be nephews.
