EDNA GOODSON RUST, age 89, of Bristol, VA passed away Saturday, January 1, 2005 at Bristol Nursing Home. Mrs. Rust was originally from Danville, VA and had moved to Bristol in 1993. She was retired from Dan River Cotton Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Rust, and a stepdaughter, Ann Necessary. Survivors include her children, Franklin Goodson, of Virginia Beach, VA, Margaret Rice, of Providence, NC, and Nellie Dix, of NC; eleven stepchildren, Mary Kennedy, of Alvarado, VA, George Rust, Claude J. Rust, Margaret Casey, Geneva Graybeal, and Irene Childress, all of Abingdon, Ruth Ladd, of Greenville, MS, Brenda Johnson, of Bristol, TN, Elizabeth Roberts, Dorothy Robinette, and Bonnie Pippin, all of Bristol, VA; two brothers, Luther Large of Bristol, VA and Dewey Large, of Princeton,WV; and one sister, Bell Noe of Umatilla, FL. A graveside service will be held Monday, January 3, 2005 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens at 3:30pm, with Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA. Bonnie Ann Dye
Mrs. Bonnie Ann Dye, age 60, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2005 in the Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Bonnie was born and raised in Washington County, VA and had lived most of her life in Bristol. She was a loving mother and a devoted housewife. She was a member of the Blackwell Chapel Union Church and was preceded in death by her parents, David William and Kate Moore Scott. Survivors include her husband, Charles H. Dye, Sr., a son, Charles Dye, Jr., a daughter, Patricia Dye Bailey all of Bristol, VA, a sister and her husband, Hazel and Richard Blackwell, Edison, N.J., loving pet, Sampson. The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Brother Ronnie Matney officiating. Pallbearers will be Howard Dye, Richard Denzau, Brian Horton, Bobby Dye, Jim Edgeworth, Bobby Cuddy, Allen McNew. The committal graveside service will be conducted Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Jack Arrington
Mr. Andrew Jackson ' Jack' Arrington II, age 75, died Sunday, January 2, 2005 on his farm. Born on October 29, 1929, Jack was a son of the late Andrew Jackson ' Andy' Arrington and Nannie Sutherland Arrington. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Page Thomas Arrington, three sisters Betty Hawthorne, Leona McAmis and Buenos Cornett. Jack was a resident of the Lodi Community in Washington County and was a ' ole time' farmer and believed in the ' ole time' way of doing things and especially his farm work with his mules. Survivors include a daughter, Ava Warren and husband Jeff of the Lodi Community; two sons, Pride Arrington and wife Tracy and Jackson Arrington and wife Sandy all of the Lodi Community; two brothers, Duard Arrington of Abingdon and Tom Arrington of the Lodi Community; two sisters, Rosie Dunn and Shirley Bordwine both of Abingdon, VA; a dear friend, Ms. Carrie Price of Damascus; three grandsons and three granddaughters. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 5, 2005 in the Rock Spring Cemetery with Rev. Charles E. ' Jody' Blevins officiating. Interment will follow the service. Friends and casketbearers attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M. Wednesday. Casketbearers will be Jim Reid, Wayne Rector, Ralph Sullivan, Bill Trent, Lee Arrington, and Joe McConnell. Honorary casket bearers will be Earnest Copenhaver, June Copenhaver, C. B. Reece. Kathleen Fields Childers
Mrs. Kathleen Fields Childers, age 77, went to be with her savior and friend, The Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, January 3, 2005. Born on January 1, 1928 in Russell County, Virginia, Kathleen was a daughter of the late Carless Fields and Lucy Mae Kennedy Fields. Kathleen was of the Christian faith and attended the Greendale Chapel Church . Survivors include her husband, Elmer Childers; a son, David Childers of Abingdon; three sisters, Rose Ellen Leedy and Trula Fields both of Abingdon and Tiny Bumgarner and husband Ben of Lebanon, VA; special friends, Linda Rogers, David Leedy, Chris Leedy, Jean Calloway and Jim Calloway. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 P.M., Wednesday, January 5, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating. Interment and committal service will be at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, January 6, 2005 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Lillie Belle Mumpower Puckett
Mrs. Lillie Belle Mumpower Puckett, age 86, passed from this life, Sunday, January 2, 2005 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital following a long illness. She was born December 27, 1919 to late Calvin M. and Addie Reynolds Mumpower. Preceding her in death were her husband of 67 years, Everett Matthew Puckett, a son, Bobby Lee Puckett, a sister, Mabel M. Lemmons and a brother Roy B. Mumpower. Lillie Belle and Everett loved and attended the Old Primitive Baptist Church. She also loved and appreciated all those who came to the house to sing the old Hymns for them. She is survived by one brother, Gene Mumpower and wife Kitty, of Maryville, Tenn; two sisters, Dorothy M. Taylor of Broadford, Va. and Sue Addington and husband, Karl of Kingsport, Tenn.; her son, Edward Alvin Puckett and wife, Scarlett, Glade Spring, Va. ; two daughters, Doris Ann Cuddy and husband, Jimmy of Bristol, Va. and Frances (Frankie) Malcolm and husband, Gene of Bristol, Va. In this union are nine grandchildren; David (Janice) Malcolm, Matt Puckett, Eric (Mandy) Puckett, Sandra (Eric) Joines, Lancer (Crissy) Cuddy, Christopher (Judy) Puckett, Michael Puckett, Amy Malcolm, Bradley Malcolm(Rebecca). There are eight grand children, Jared Malcolm, Kimberly Puckett, Dakota Puckett, Eric Puckett II, Tyler Puckett, Ethan Puckett, Lancer Cuddy, Jr. and Levi Joines. The family of Lillie Belle would like to express sincere gratitude to very special caring and loving nieces, nephews and family members during their time of need. George Edward Lawson
George Edward (Short) Lawson, 82, of Abingdon, passed away Tuesday, January 4, 2005. He was of the Baptist faith and had served in the U.S. Army, where he was awarded the American Theatre Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Service Star; the good conduct medal, and the Victory Medal. Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by his parents, George Arnold and Mary Branch Wright Lawson; one sister, Cora Johnson; and 2 brothers, Henry A. and Robert L. Lawson. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Snead Lawson; six children, Michael Lawson of Abingdon, Melody Bowers of Abingdon, Edward Lawson and wife, Gayle, of Abingdon, Marvin Lawson and wife Thelma of Meadowview, Mary Bradley of Abingdon, and Barbara Bradley of Marion; one brother, William Lawson of Abingdon; one sister, Mary Ann Hinkle of Versailles, KY; seven grandchildren, Travis and Misty Bowers, Brian and Nicole Lawson, Samara Lawson, Tonya Sherfey, and James Bradley; four great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Charles Edmond Winesett
Mr. Charles Edmond Winesett, age 79, died Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie, VA. He was born on June 8, 1925 in Grayson County, VA to the late John Edmond Winesett and Hallie Carson Winesett. Edmond was preceded in death by his wife, Gae Crowe Winesett, a brother, Whit Winesett and a sister, Hallie Gwyn. He had lived in Mt. Airy, NC as a young man and had made his home in Washington County, Virginia since 1947. Edmond was a retired carpenter, brick mason and farmer. He had served in the U. S. Coast Guard during WW II and was a member of the Marion V.F. W. Post #4667. He was a longtime member of Friendship Baptist Church where he had also served as deacon of the church. Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Jo Davis and husband Howard, Andrea W. Newman and husband Fred, Sandra W. Heath and husband Glenn all of the Friendship Community and Tracy W. Coggins and husband Berry of Gray, TN; a sister Louise Adkins of Low Gap, NC; seven grandchildren, Eddie Davis and wife Jennifer, Anna Newman Campbell and husband Justin, Jeremy Weaver, Cathy Newman Reid and husband Emery, Jeremiah Weaver, Charlie Coggins and Kasey Coggins; three great grandchildren, Sydney, Christopher and Seth. A Graveside memorial service will be conducted at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, January 8, 2005 in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with Rev. David Sizemore and Rev. Paul Jones officiating. Dorothy Ernestine Weaver
Mrs. Dorothy Ernestine McCracken Weaver, 83, died Wednesday, January 5, at Indian Path Medical Center. She was a life-long resident of Washington County, Virginia and was a member of Mt. Carmel Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur C. ' Mike' Weaver; by her brothers, Monroe, Garland, Bobby and B. H. McCracken; and by her sisters, Lucille Jackson and Pearl Lloyd. She is survived by her sons, Jim Weaver and wife Susan of Kingsport, TN, Michael Weaver of Abingdon, VA; and by her daughter, Janie Weaver Stapleton and husband David of Kingsport, TN. Also surviving are her brother, Clyde McCracken of Abingdon and her sister, Geneva Repass of Meadowview; seven grandchildren: Mark Smelser and wife Tiffany; Michael Smelser; Kelly Smelser; Christopher Weaver; Todd Weaver and wife Nancy; Mary Catherine Weaver and Anne Weaver. Her surviving great-grandchildren are Hannah Smelser and Porter Smelser. She is also survived by step-grandson, Rodney Stapleton and a step-great-granddaughter, Brittany Stapleton; and several nieces and nephews . Mrs. Margaret Elaine (Judy) Roark, age 57, passed away, Thursday, January 6, 2005, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Deloras Henegar. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Dale Roark. MR. LENFORD M. ' IMP' HICKS, age 76, passed away, Saturday, January 08, 2005, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He had lived in Abingdon since 1960 where he was a Deacon at the Rosedale Baptist Church. He was a U. S. Navy veteran serving in World War II and a retired branch manager of the Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hazel Adams Hicks; five daughters, Linda Roseberry and husband, Mickey of High Point, N.C., Iva White and husband, Walter of Meadowview, Va., Sandy Johnson and husband, Dan of Lodi, Va., Beth White and husband, Steve of Glade Spring, Va., Connie Moffatt and husband, Charles of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister, Aleane Hash and husband, Claude of Marion, Va.; six grandsons, six granddaughters and eleven great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted Monday, January 10, 2005, at 8:00 PM in the Rosedale Baptist Church with Rev. Don Paxton and Rev. John Stapleton officiating. A committal service will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 AM in the Rosedale Baptist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 \endash 8 PM Monday at the church. Olen "Doc" Smith, Jr.
Mr. Olen ' Doc' Smith, Jr., age 83, passed away peacefully Sunday morning, January 9, 2005 in Johnston Memorial Hospital with his loving and caring wife, step-daughter and step grandson at his bed side. He was born May 21, 1921 to the late Virginia Lee and Olen Smith, Sr., Meadowview, VA. He was also preceded in death by twin brothers, Marvin and Marion Smith. Prior to World War II, Olen ' Doc' served in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC). He was drafted in to the military forces and assigned to the Tuskegee Institute. Later he was assigned over seas to Italy with the 332nd fighter group and was an aircraft mechanic and remained there till the end of WWII. He was one of the original Tuskegee Airmen. After being discharged from the service, he went to Erie, PA where he worked for General Motors. He was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church where he served as a teacher and a trustee. He was on the board of the Day Care Center and an honorary member of the American Legion. After coming back to Abingdon, he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher of the First Baptist Church, Meadowview, VA where he was a loyal member until his last illness. Olen ' Doc' is survived by his wife, Ethel Baker Smith, one daughter, Patricia Smith, one granddaughter, four grandsons, four great grandchildren, one step-daughter, Ellen Carter, three step-grandchildren. one sister, Viola Daniels and husband Ely of Colorado Springs, Colorado; three nieces and six nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 13, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Lafayette Vance, Rev. Andrew Arnold, Rev. William Austin, Rev. W. A. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military honors to be rendered by the Highland Veterans Honor Color Guard. Harold Daniel Mitchell, Sr.
HAROLD DANIEL MITCHELL, SR., passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2005 at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center. Mr. Mitchell was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. He was retired from the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation with 33 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Stafford, Sr. and Leah Mitchell, and a brother, Robert Mitchell. Survivors include his wife, Pearl Mitchell; two sons, Harold Daniel Mitchell, Jr. and his wife, Rose of Abingdon, and Philip Mitchell and wife, Vicki of Abingdon; two daughters, Rapunzel Belcher and husband Clyde, of Abingdon, and Cynthia Trail and husband Mike, of Bristol, VA; 8 grandchildren, Nakeesha Belcher, Felicia Martin, Sumer Lowry, Courtney Trail, Jason Mitchell, Tyler Trail, Victoria Mitchell, and McKayla Mitchell; one brother, Stafford Mitchell, Jr. of Trapp, Pennsylvania; one sister, Mary Catherine Davis, of Lebanon; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at 11am at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Tim Stevens officiating. Mary Ruth Bundy
Mary Ruth Reynolds Bundy, age 84, passed away at her residence on Tuesday, January 11, 2005.
Mary Ruth was born in Abingdon, MD the daughter of the late Ruth Cassell Reynolds and George Reynolds, Jr. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Jack P. Bundy.
Mary Ruth is survived by her brother, George Reynolds, III of Prague, OK; her sister, Virginia Wooldridge of Oxford, NC; her sister-in-law, Martha Jean Bundy of Bristol, TN; three children, James C. Bundy and wife Libby of Abingdon; Robert M. Bundy and wife Mary of Abingdon and Laura B. Johnson of Charlottesville, VA; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Mary Ruth lived in Abingdon for many years and was very active in the community. She was a prominent and deeply committed member of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church and the Altar Guild. Mary Ruth' s many community activities included her involvement in The Booklover' s Club, Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Washington County Historical Society, Virginia Highlands Festival Board, various bridge clubs, a patron for the Barter Theatre, William King Regional Arts Center and numerous local charities.
Mary Ruth will be remembered for her kindness, generosity and positive attitude toward all. She truly lived by the ' Golden Rule' , treating everyone with dignity and respect. She had no enemies and was loved by all who knew her. Her life was an example of grace and optimism.
A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M., Friday, January 14, 2005 in the St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. Craig Wylie officiating. There will be a reception following the memorial service in the church Parrish House.

Woodrow Wilson Duncan
Mr. Woodrow Wilson Duncan, age 91, passed away Wednesday January 12, 2005 in Grace Healthcare of Abingdon. He had lived all of his life in Washington County and attended the Yellow Springs United Methodist Church. He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U. S. Army. He was also a member of McCabe Lodge #56 I.O.O.F., the Parke P. Deans Rebekah Lodge #68 and was a carpenter. He was preceded in death by thirteen brothers and sisters. Survivors include his wife, Frances Tedder Duncan, two sons, Stan Duncan, Glade Spring, VA and Rick Duncan, Meadowview, VA, Grandchildren, April, Melissa, Eric, Nicholas and J. T. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday, January 16, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Katye Fox and Mrs. Barbara Farmer officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military honors to be rendered by the Highlands Veterans Honor Color Guard. Pallbearers will be Eric Duncan, Nicholas Duncan, J. T. Margaret Dell Clark Anderson, age 91 passed away Thursday, January 13, 2005 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and was a native of Lawrence, SC. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Duff Clark and Mary Pearl Layton Clark. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mildred Clark, Abingdon, VA. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, January 14, 2005 at 3:30 p.m. in the Sinking Spring Cemetery with Rev. John E. Massey, Jr. officiating.

Ellen Craig Porterfield
Ellen Craig Porterfield, age 87, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, Virginia. Mrs. Porterfield had been a resident of Hillsville, VA for several years, moving there from Glade Spring, VA. She was a retired Deputy Treasurer of Grundy, VA. Ellen was the daughter of the late Robert Craig and Georgia Legard Craig. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Porterfield and a son, Robert Porterfield. She is survived by her daughter, Rachel P. Worrell of Hillsville, VA, a daughter-in-law, Kathy Porterfield; two grandchildren, Mike Worrell and wife Susan and Craig Worrell and wife Kelly of Hillsville, VA; great-grandchildren Jacob, Jordan, Emily, Preston, Alli and Jessie Worrell. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 15, 2005 at the Glade Spring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Timothy Bird officiating. Freda Wolford Rife
Freda Wolford Rife, age 78, died Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at the Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. Born on April 9, 1926 in Woodman, Kentucky, Freda was a daughter of the late John Wolford and Mary Hurley Wolford. Freda was also preceded in death by her husband, James Lincoln Rife; a son, Larry Rife; a sister, Madge Burke and a brother, Carl Wolford. She was a former resident of Buchanan County before moving to Abingdon five years ago. Freda was a member of the Green Spring Presbyterian Church and will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Gail Rife Skeens of Abingdon and Robert Skeens of Grundy; daughter-in-law, Judy Lester Rife of Grundy; two sisters, Ollie Smithof Woodman, KY and Zella Sunderland of Worthing, OH; two grandchildren, James Robert Skeens and Heather Rife Bevins; a great grandson, C. J. Nebraska Pauline Boardwine passed away at Westhaven Retirement Home, January 18, 2005 at the young age of 87. Grace Crabtree Jones
Mrs. Grace Crabtree Jones, age 93, passed away, Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion following a long illness. She was born March 7, 1911 in Lincoln, Nebraska but moved to Virginia as a child. She was a resident of Saltville, Virginia where she was a member of the Saltville Baptist Church. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Richard Jones. She is survived by: Her daughters, Bernice Dunn of Abingdon, Va. and Carole Colley of Suwanee, Georgia; A sister, Mickie Deierlein of Mt. Vernon, Washington; Four grandchildren, Vicki Montgomery of Saltville, Va.; Dr. Melissa R. Osborne of Kansas City, Mo.; Will Colley of Atlanta, Ga.; and Wes Colley of Portsmouth, Va.; four great grandchildren; one very precious great great grandson; Several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, January 22, 2005, at 3:00 PM in the Mount Rose Cemetery with Rev. Bill Rowland officiating. Edward Cozzarin
Abingdon, VA \endash Edward Cozzarin, 76, was a long-time resident of Abingdon at 926 Maiden Street. Born in Detroit, Ed was an automotive and industrial engineer. He began his career at Chrysler, then relocated with his young family to Ithaca, NY, to take a position as a project manager at Morse-Borg Warner. He married Angela Bettucci in 1975 and moved to the Buffalo area where he was a manager with Columbus-McKinnon (CM), a manufacturer of industrial winches. Ed later transferred to CM' s plant operations in Virginia, settling down in the beau\-tiful town of Abingdon. In retirement, Ed and his wife enjoyed a second home in Naples, FL, where they hosted family and friends. Ed was diagnosed in May 2004 with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer, and underwent treatment. He passed away on January 19, 2005, at his home under the care of his wife Angela, and her sister, Joan Collins of Cuba, NY. In addition to his wife, Angela, he leaves four children, Audrey, Patrick, Christopher, and Gina, stepdaughters Judi Bettucci Cooper and her sister Marie Bettucci, a sister, Annie Cozzarin McCarthy, and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, January 22, 2005, at 11:00 AM in the Christ the King Catholic Church with Rev. Robert Krenik and Father Paul Maier officiating. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Hospice & Palliative Care of Virginia, P.O. Don Thompson
Don Thompson, age 72, of Abingdon, Virginia, formerly of Odessa and Midland, Texas, died Sunday, January 16, 2005, from injuries sustained in an accident. He was born in Dickens, Texas in 1932. He attended The University of Houston; Texas Tech University, and served in the Army Medical Corps. As a young man, he performed in Hollywood as a movie extra, acted in summer stock and worked in the television industry in New York City. Don was a talented chef who, together with his partner, Hector Bellini, owned and operated Bellini and Thompson, two restaurants in Midland and Odessa, both of which enjoyed statewide reputations for excellent dining. He retired to Abingdon to be with friends, to enjoy the beauty of Southwest Virginia and the abundance of cultural events available. He truly loved his new home. He is survived by his aunt Cindy Mays; his cousin Nancy McCann and her husband Mike and their children; numerous friends, and Alexander, his beloved cat companion of 16 years. Donna Belle Briscoe age 64 died Thursday, January 20, 2005 in the Select Specialty Hospital, Bristol, TN. She was a native of Russell County, VA and was a former of employee of Harwood Manufacturing. Later in life, she received her nursing degree and was employed at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Giles and Angeline Jessee Biggs. Survivors include her husband, John Briscoe, four sons and their wives, John and Kimberly Briscoe, Abingdon, VA, Mike and Tanya Briscoe, Meadowview, VA, Tim and Holly Briscoe, Pearland, TX, Mark and Kimberly J. Nadine Crosswhite Keesee, 14387 Stonybrook Road, Meadowview, Virginia went to Heaven on Sunday, January 23, 2005 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in Plasterco, Virginia to the late George and Mary Ellen Bordwine. Preceding her in death was her husband, James Kenneth Crosswhite of Meadowview and two granddaughters, Kitina Renee' Mink and Stacy Mink McCray, also three brothers and eight sisters. She had been employed with the Emory and Henry College Cafeteria with thirty-six years of service, retiring in November 2004. She was also an Avon representative for thirty-five years and attended the Mt. Carmel Christian Church. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, neighbor and a friend to everyone. Ella Mae Quesenberry
Ella Mae Blevins Quesenberry, age 75, died Monday, January 24, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born on December 16, 1929 in Washington County, VA, Ella Mae was a daughter of the late Hoit Blevins and Nina Miller Blevins. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Violet Clark and a brother, Roger Blevins. She was of the Methodist faith and attended Emory United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son Gregory T. Quesenberry of Abingdon; two sisters, Edna Chappell of Bear, DE and Ruth Blevins of Abingdon; three brothers, Harry Blevins of Austell, GA, Frank Blevins of Cartersville, GA and Charles Blevins of Bear, DE. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Friday, January 28, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. Born on June 10, 1939 in Pike County, KY, she was a daughter of the late Rell Williamson and Lizzie Murphy Williamson and was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister. Survivors include a very special sister-in-law, ' Momma' Peggy Williamson of Abingdon; two sisters, Nancy Williamson and Betty Jo Absher both of Kentucky and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 27, 2005 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Mr. Richard Gaminde and Mr. James Ling officiating. Casket bearers will be Edgar Williamson, Jr., Hank Williamson, Greg Williamson, Doug Yates, Charlie Yates and Roger Yates.

Rosalie Horn
ROSALIE HORN, age 92, of Bristol, TN, originally from Buchanan County, VA, passed away Thursday, January 27, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, Evans Horn. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Bill Whaley, of Bristol, TN; 2 grandchildren, Pamela West and Shelia Hayes; 2 great grandchildren, Seth Hayes and Michelle Barrett; and 2 great great grandchildren, Saylor and Hobie Dowell. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 29, 2005 at 2pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA with Pastor Richard Gaminde officiating. Jackie R. Humphrey, Sr.
JACKIE R. HUMPHREY, SR., passed away Thursday, January 27, 2005. Born November 16, 1937, he was a lifelong resident of Washington County. Mr. Humphrey was a self employed milk hauler, and retired from Pet Milk Co. with 45+ years service. Until recently, he had also worked part time at Southwest Virginia 4H Center. He was preceded in death by his father, Dewey Trigg Humphrey, and his wife of 34 years, Phyllis Helms Humphrey. Mr. Humphrey is survived by his wife of 12 years, Edna Gearldine (Jean) Humphrey; his mother, Helen E. Humphrey; sister, Peggy J. Smith, all of Meadowview; 4 daughters, Phala J. (Tay) Cannon, of Meadowview, Michelle L. Walden and husband, Frankie of Bristol, Anita Steffey and husband Ronald of Nickelsville, and Tammy Blevins and husband Dennis of Chilhowie; 4 sons, Rodney D. Humphrey and wife Kimberly, Jackie R. Humphrey, Jr. (Gee), Gary Morrison and wife Karen, and Wayne Morrison, all of Meadowview; a special granddaughter, Brandi Glover White of Abingdon and other special grandchildren, William, Dakota, Dustin, Doug, Jennifer, Makenzie, Jeff, Kenny, Gina, Michael, Bryan, Hannah, and Kirsten; a special niece, Teresa Hurd and husband Tom; and several other nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and family that were all special to him. Ila Creola Humphrey
Ila Creola Hash Humphrey was born 30 January 1909 in Grayson County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Andrew and Lothia Henderson Hash, her husband, Wiley N. Humphrey, one son, Leon Humphrey and one grandson, Tracy Humphrey, brothers: Gret, Paul, Yokely and Gale Hash, sisters: Octavia Clark, Theo Dutton and Buella Martin and a son-in-law, Roy M. Prater. She passed away Friday, January 28, 2005 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, VA. Survivors include two sons and daughters \endash in-law, Johnny and Reba Humphrey, Bristol, VA, Kermit and Christine Humphrey, Pine Grove, PA, one daughter, Virginia Prater, Glade Spring, VA, two sisters, Elizabeth Caudill and Mae Paris, both of Meadowview, VA, 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 22 great-great grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted Monday, January 31, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Brother Tommy Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery. Ruby W. Darnell
Ruby W. Darnell, age 91 moved to her new home in Heaven to live forever on January 30, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Mt. Carmel Christian Church, Meadowview, VA and was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Darnell, a son, Bobby R. Darnell, sisters, Lettie McCracken and Marie Pritchard and a brother. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Charles L. and Martha Darnell, a daughter-in-law, Mary Darnell, grandchildren; Ricky Darnell, Tina Thomas and husband, Brian, Monica Darnell, Jennifer Taylor and husband, Chris, great-grandchildren; Lindsey Bare, Trey Lopez, Landon Taylor, several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Mr. Tommy Oakes officiating Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Connie Evelyn Owens Phipps
Abingdon, VA - Connie Evelyn Owens Phipps, a 45-year resident of the Cummings Heights community in Abingdon, died January 31, 2005 at her home after a long illness. Mrs. Phipps was born December 1, 1925 in Haysi, Virginia to the late Ted R. and Lina Fuller Owens. She was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church. Mrs. Phipps loved flower and vegetable gardening and was known to many neighbors in Cummings Heights as ' The Rose Lady' . Mrs. Phipps was a graduate of Virginia Highlands Community College. After her graduation from VHCC she served as the college' s Financial Aid Officer from 1971 until her retirement in 1987. She was also active in the Appalachian Girl Scout Council and was a group leader from 1965 to 1974. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 56 years, Orien Kenneth Phipps, February 13, 2004, as well as her parents, two brothers, Ted R. Owens, Jr. and Cecil V. Owens. Survivors include one daughter: Sandra Phipps Hicks and husband Ed of Alexandria, Virginia; one grandson: Chris Morgan and wife Tracy of Dumfries, Virginia; two step grandchildren, Ashley Hicks of Monterey, California and Eddie Hicks of Alexandria. Two brothers: Tivis Owens and Russell Owens and wife Joanna of Abingdon, VA; One sister: Betty Owens McClanahan and husband Gerald of Tazewell, Virginia. One brother-in-law: Aven Phipps of Vansant Virginia, and five sisters' -in-law: Eunice Phipps Fleming of Bel Air, Maryland, Madge Phipps High of Reistertown, Maryland, Eva Phipps Allen of Concord, North Carolina, Jean Phipps Taylor of Glencoe, Alabama, and Karin Owens of Washington state. Mrs. Phipps is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of loving friends and neighbors. Conley Trigg Greer
Mr. Conley Trigg Greer, Jr, age 86, died Sunday, January 30, 2005 at the Grace Health Care Center in Abingdon. Born on July 26, 1918 in Abingdon, Conley was a son of the late Henrietta Johnson Greer and Conley Trigg Greer, Sr. He was a graduate of William King High School in Abingdon and the Business College of Johnson City, TN. Conley and his wife were the former owners and operators of Greer & Son Jewelers. He was an active and lifelong member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church. Conley was very active in show horses from his P & G Stables for many years and played a big roll in the development of the 4-H Riding Center in Washington County, VA. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Pearl Aline Combs Greer; his uncle, Raymond Johnson; cousin Charles Galliher and wife Betty as well as several other cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends Joe and Janavee Phipps. For their loving and tender care, the family wishes to extend a very special thanks to the staff of Grace Health Care Center, special friends Jane and Helen Bryan, Jean Combs, J.H. John Franklin Barrett
Mr. John Franklin Barrett, age 58, died Monday, January 31, 2005, at his home after an extended illness. He was born January 11, 1947 in Abingdon, Virginia to the late Robert Francis and Vivian Clark Barrett. He grew up in Abingdon and then moved to Greensboro, North Carolina. He was a U. S. Army veteran serving in the 82nd Airborne, 1st Calvary Division in Vietnam. He had worked at Tyco for 26 years where he was a tool and die specialist. John was a member of the American Legion, VFW and Army Reserve. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Ann Barrett; his children, Robert James Barrett and wife, Leslie Ann of Abingdon, Va., Joel Brian Barrett and wife, Olivia of Abingdon, Va., Shawna Aaron Wilson and husband Tripp of Laurinburg, N.C., Todd Ryan Henry and wife, Tracey of Marietta, Ga.; his sisters, Patricia Barrett White, Elizabeth Ann Porter and Jennifer Lucille Barrett all of Greensboro, N.C.; his brother, Robert Francis Barrett, Jr. of Greensboro, N.C. his grandchildren, Brittany Paige Barrett, Jesse James Barrett, Sarah Ashlie Henry, Jacob Cohen Henry, Gavin Hambrick Wilson and Ethan Nicholas Wilson; Aunts and uncles, Sylvia Arbelle (PeeWee) Arnold, Douglas Franklin Clark and Sonja Ruth Clark. David Lee Kloppenborg
Mr. David Lee Kloppenborg, age 52, died Thursday, January 27, 2005. Born on September 22, 1952 in Clay County, Nebraska, David was a son of Wesley Carl Kloppenborg and the late Betty Marie White Kloppenborg. He was employed as a computer engineer. Prior to moving to California, David was a former resident of the Bristol area and was formerly employed at the Raytheon Defense Systems plant there. He was a U. S. Army Veteran. In addition to his father, David is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Rowe Kloppenborg; two daughters, Anna Kloppenborg and Alissa Kloppenborg and his two sisters, Vicki and Debbi. A private funeral service will be held Saturday, February 5, 2005 with Rev. Herbert Peak officiating. Military graveside rites will be provided by Highlands Fellowship Honor Color Guard.
