Robert L. "Bob" Pugh
Robert Lynnwood "Bob" Pugh, 61, of Abingdon, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2005. A native of Lee County, V A, he had lived in :Beckley, WV and West Jefferson, NC prior to moving to the area in 1970 and was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church. Bob was a graduate of North Carolina State and Appalachian State Universities, and spent his professional life as an educator, teaching at Northwest Ashe High School in Warrensville, NC, and Appalachian State University. He was a faculty member at Virginia Highlands Community College from 1970 to 1975, and served as the Dean of Administration there from 1975 to 1998; during this period he twice served as the Acting President of the College. He served several terms on the Virginia Highlands Airport Commission, and as an amateur radio operator devoted many hours to Civil Defense training and exercises. A lifelong Boy Scout and adult leader, he was a proud Eagle Scout and recipient of both the Silver Beaver and Pioneer awards for distinguished service. Bob was also an avid duplicate bridge player and participated in many local and regional tournaments. He is preceded in death by his mother Cornelia Orr Pugh, and his father Robert Guy Pugh. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Wanda Baldwin Pugh of Abingdon; two daughters, Robyn Leadbitter and husband Doug of Columbia, SC and Laura Elizabeth Pugh of Chilhowie; one son, James T. Pugh of Arlington, VA; one sister, Rebecca Burgess and husband Wayne of West Jefferson, NC; one nephew, Robert W. Burgess of Jamestown, NC; one niece, Amy B. Weaver of Mooresville, NC; one grandson, one\-month old Ryan Douglas Leadbitter; and one uncle, Edsel F. Pugh of Cincinnati, OH, and several cousins. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 E. Main St., Abingdon. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall of the church immediately following the service, and graveside services will follow at 5:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. Memorials may be made to Boy Scout Troop 222 or Abingdon United Methodist Church. Pallbearers will be scouts and adult leaders of Boy Scout Troop 222.

Graycee Elizabeth Christian
Graycee Elizabeth Christian, infant daughter of Jason and Amanda Horne Christian, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2005 in the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Knoxville, TN. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Glennis Christian. Additional survivors include a sister, Abbygail Christian of the home, maternal grandparents, Jim and Debbie Horne, Abingdon, VA, paternal grandfather, Joseph Christian, Grundy, VA and maternal great grandmother, Doris Blevins, Abingdon, VA. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, March 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Service Main Street Chapel with Pastor Paul Viers officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Gene Christian, Jr. and Billy Denton. The family will receive friends Friday from 6-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

James Douglas Crenshaw
Mr. James Douglas Crenshaw, 84, died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center nursing home after a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late George Ganders and Bettie Smyth Crenshaw. Mr. Crenshaw was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and a member of the Yellow Springs United Methodist Church. He was a farmer and a retired custodian with the Washington County Schools at Abingdon High School. Mr. Crenshaw served in the U. S. Army in both the African and European Theatres during World War II (1940-1945 where he received the American Defense Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, the Euro-African Middle East Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, the Expert Infantry Badge and the Expert Bayonet Badge with on Bronze Arrow Head. He also served in the U. S. Navy from 1948 \endash 1950. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Ruth Henry Crenshaw; four brothers and two sisters, Bill, Ellis, Leon, John, Elizabeth and Bess. Survivors include,

A graveside service will be held Sunday at 1:30 PM in the Knollkreg Memorial Park. Military rites will be conducted by the Highlands Fellowship Church Honor Color Guard. Pallbearers will be Buddy Norris, Pete (Howard) Henry, Junior Cook, Bill Greany, Shayne Crenshaw and GySgt Brock Crenshaw. Honorary pallbearers will be Cecil Holmes, Jack Thompson, Jim Thompson, Freddy Bellamy, James Bellamy, Curt Addison, Joy Hayter, Dan Stevens, Eddie Rainey, SSgt. Donald Franklin "Yogi" McVey
Donald Franklin ' Yogi' McVey, age 57, went to be with our Lord on March 3, 2005 at his home. Born on December 18, 1947, in Washington County, Virginia, ' Yogi' was a son of Lucy Reynolds McVey and the late Herman Ray McVey. He was a U. S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the 101St Airborne Division. Survivors in addition to his mother include two sisters, Glenna McVey, with whom ' Yogi' made his home and Brenda Haynes of Port Orange, FL.; a brother, Kenneth McVey of Abingdon and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 3:30 P.M. Sunday, March 6, 2005 in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Brother Brandon Canter officiating. Military graveside rites will be provided by the Highlands Fellowship Honor Color Guard. Interment will follow the service. Casket bearers will be Johnny Branson, Gary Reynolds, Mike Reynolds, Rick Harless, Charles Easterly, Jr. and Gary Ramey. Honorary casket bearers will be Dr. Todd Nairn, and Paul Osborne. Michael "Mikey" Wayne Bowers
Michael ' Mikey' Wayne Bowers, age 53, died Saturday, March 5, 2005. Mike was born on November 21, 1951 in Washington County, Virginia and was preceded in death by his grandparents. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors include his wife, Melody Lawson Bowers; his daughter, Misty Bowers of Abingdon; his son, Travis Bowers of Abingdon; a granddaughter, Aleah Bowers; his parents, E. H. ' Nub' Bowers and Ruth Blevins Bowers of Abingdon; a sister, Barbara Sullins of Abingdon and three brothers, Harry ' Butch' Bowers of Abingdon, Ralph ' Satch' Bowers of Concord, NC and Lawrence ' Rick' Bowers of North Carolina. The family will receive friends from 9:30 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. Wednesday before the funeral service at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens), 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Wednesday at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Paul Price officiating. Interment will follow the service. J. Thomas Hulvey, M.D., F.A.C.S
J. Thomas Hulvey, M.D., F.A.C.S., age 69, died Monday, March 7, 2005. Dr. Hulvey was born on November 15, 1935 in Staunton, Virginia and was a son of the late John William Hulvey and Lelia Radford Hulvey. Thomas received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from the University of Virginia in 1962 and served his surgical internship at the University of Florida from 1962 \endash 1963. He had served as a medical officer with the United States Navy from 1963 \endash 1965. His orthopedic surgery residency was served at the University of Virginia from 1965 \endash 1969, and he had practiced orthopedic medicine at his private practice in Abingdon from 1969 until his retirement in 2001. Dr. Hulvey was a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Over the years, his clinical and teaching appointments included Staff Orthopedic Surgeon at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon and Orthopedic Consultant with Virginia Children' s Specialty Services. He was currently Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia. Dr. Hulvey had served the medical profession as Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the University of Virginia Medical Alumni Association in 1979; President of the Southwestern Virginia Medical Society from 1984 -1985 and Counselor for the Ninth Congressional District Medical Society of Virginia from 1979 \endash 1985; President of the Medical Society of Virginia from 1988 \endash 1989; President and Chief of Staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital in 1990; Member of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors from 1990 \endash 1994; current Member of the Board of Trustees of Johnston Memorial Hospital; Founding Member and Emeritus Trustee and Advisor to Virginia Healthcare Foundation; Member of the Board of Counselors, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons of Virginia from 1996 \endash 2002; Member of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society from 1996 \endash 2002; current Member of Virginia State Board of Medicine. Dr. Hulvey' s local community service included serving as a member of the Washington County School Board from 1976 \endash 1980; Member of the Barter Foundation Board of Trustees from 1977 \endash 2000; Liturgical Eucharistic Minister of St. Thomas Episcopal Church; team physician to Abingdon High School, Emory & Henry College and Clinch Valley College (University of Virginia' s College at Wise). He was inducted into the Roanoke College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984, received the Frank C. McCue III Award in Sports Medicine from the Virginia High School League in 1985 and the Distinguished Service Award in Sports Medicine from Coach Bobby Dodd and the National Federation of Interscholastic Athletics in 1985. Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Elizabeth Lewis Kelsey Hulvey; his children, Elizabeth Kelsey Hulvey of Charlotte, NC; Margaret Lewis Hulvey of Abingdon and John Thomas Hulvey, Jr., M.D. of Roanoke,VA ; and his brother, Larry William Hulvey and wife Judy of Jesup, GA. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, March 10, 2005 in the St. Thomas Episcopal Church with the Rev. Craig Wylie officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon, VA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 \endash 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 E. Lucy Virginia Reynolds McVey, age 82, went to be with the Lord on March 11, 2005at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was retired from the Abingdon Harwood after 29 years of service. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Reynolds, her husband, Herman Ray McVey and son, Donald F. ' Yogi' McVey. She is survived by Glenna McVey of the home, Mr. and Mrs. James S. Haynes (Brenda), Port Orange, Florida and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth McVey of Abingdon, four sisters, Mary Branson, Kathleen Henley, Gertrude Defriece all of Abingdon, Mrs. Bill (Margaret) Ford, Bristol, TN, brothers-in-law, Louis McVey, Meadowview, VA, Sam McVey, Abingdon, VA, sisters-in-law, Ruth Dunn, Meadowview, VA, Helen Reynolds, Abingdon, VA, Hattie Reynolds, Chilhowie, VA, Edith Reynolds, Staunton, VA, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Thomas Lafayette Fisher, Jr.
Mr. Thomas Lafayette Fisher, Jr., age 63, passed away Thursday March 10, 2005 in the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN. He was a native of Glade Spring, VA and was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Lafayette Fisher, Sr., and Maggie Mullins Fisher and a sister. Thomas served in the U. S. Navy and received an honorable discharge. Survivors include three brothers, David Fisher and Lee Mullins, both of Baltimore, MD, Clinton Fisher of Danville, KY, Nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday, March 12, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mountain View Methodist Cemetery with Rev. Donald Thayer officiating. There will be no visitation in the funeral home. Military graveside rites will be presented by Highlands Veterans Honor Color Guard.

Roy Emilee Smith
ROY EMILEE SMITH, of Abingdon, entered into Heaven to be with his wife and sons Friday, March 11, 2005 at his residence. Born April 11, 1916, he was the son of the late Ballard and Elizabeth Smith. He was a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, a retired miner, and a proud member of the Shriners and Masons of Pikeville, KY, Abingdon, and Cleveland, VA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Ida Smith; two sons, Willis and Scott Smith; two brothers, Woodrow and A.L. Smith; and two sisters, Cora Brown and Frances Artrip. He is survived by one son, Gerald Smith and wife Cora of Harold, KY; five daughters, Anna Greer and husband John of Banner Elk, NC, Lorene Crabtree and husband Bob of Honaker; Nina Martin and husband Gene of the home, Shirley Goddard and husband Kyle of Pikeville, KY, and Wilma Noviello and husband Jim of Hayes, VA; two daughters in law, Frances Smith of Pikeville, KY and Betty Smith of Lebanon; four brothers, Jim Smith and wife Mildred of Bristol. David Gray Bazemore
David Gray Bazemore of Abingdon, Virginia, departed his life suddenly on March 14, 2005. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, David was born on November 28, 1952 and was the son of the late Omer G. Bazemore and Jestine F. (Bazemore) Keene. He was a Navy brat and lived in Savannah, Georgia, Norfolk, Virginia and Argentia, Newfoundland in his early years. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1976 with a degree in civil engineering and went to work at Clinchfield/Pittston Coal Company, retiring after 25 years of service. David loved his job, and he missed his friends and spoke often of his work memories after retiring two years ago. He was known throughout the coal mining industry as an expert in permitting, and he worked diligently in forest restoration in Southwest Virginia. He was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all. He is survived by his devoted wife, Wanda J. Bazemore; three sisters and their families, Cindy and Ricky Futrell, and their children Derek and wife Melissa, Teresa, Jacob and Melissa, all of Virginia Beach, VA; Sandy and Charlie Claxton, and their children Amanda and Katie of Virginia Beach, VA; and Debbie and Kaj Dentler, and their children Eric and Danielle of Leesburg, Virginia; several special aunts, uncles and cousins from Georgia. His puppies, Scamp and Tippy will miss him too. The family will receive friends for visitation at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) on Wednesday, March 16, 2005, from 6:00 p.m. \endash 8:00 p.m. A celebration of life service will be conducted by Revs. Brian Autry and Derek Futrell on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 12:00 noon at H. D. Oliver Funeral Home \endash Colonial Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia. His final resting place will be with his beloved Mom and Dad at Woodlawn Cemetery in Norfolk, Virginia. Denzil Arnold
Denzil Arnold, age 70, died at Johnston Memorial Hospital Monday, March 14, 2005. He was a well-respected businessman and was the owner and operator of Abingdon Electonics/Radio Shack in the Abingdon community for 46 years until his retirement in 2003. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and served his country during the Korean conflict. Denzil was an avid golfer and loved to play music. He is survived by his wife of 46 years: Betty J. Arnold; two daughters: Susan Dugger, Bristol, VA and Sharon Flanders and husband Ken of Abingdon; one brother: Jerry Arnold, Abingdon; one aunt: Catherine Smythe, Bristol, TN; three grandchildren: Sarah Flanders, Kristen Flanders and Rebecca Dugger; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Denzil Arnold will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon. Entombment will follow at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Don Kimberlin, Coy Martin, Bill Price, Larry Owens, Richard Quillen, Harry Cross, Howard Carbary and Lowell Blevins. Leman H. Stamper
Leman H. Stamper, 87, of Abingdon, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2005. Originally from Russell County, he was a member of Valley Chapel Church. Mr. Stamper was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Stamper, and two daughters, Becky Mutter and Kathy Lee. Survivors include his children, Treva Roberts, Sue Johnson, Harold Stamper, and Sherman Earls; one brother, Jennings Musick; three sisters, Nancy Smith, Frances Puckett, and Phyllis Rutherford; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at 1pm at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Jason Nunley officiating. There will be no public visitation.

Everett Clyde "Buck" Buchanan
Mr. Everett Clyde ' Buck' Buchanan, age 92, passed away, Sunday, March 13, 2005 at the Grace Healthcare Center. Everett was born in Washington County, Virginia and had lived in the Washington DC area for some time before returning to Abingdon. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald W. Buchanan and two grandsons. He is survived by His wife, Esther Osborne Buchanan; Four sons, David Buchanan, Bradenton, Florida, Tim Buchanan, Tampa, Florida, Dale Neaves, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Don Neaves, Virginia Beach, Virginia; Three daughters, Betty Ray, Montgomery, Alabama, Drema Willis, St. Augustine, Florida, Debby Loggans, Abingdon, Virginia; One sister, Rachel Warren, Weber City, Virginia; 21 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, March 17, 2005 at 2:00 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Mr. Bill Reece officiating. Maria Dado
Maria Dado, age 97, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2005 surrounded by family members in prayer. She was born in Pennsylvania to Filomena and Giovanni Serianni but lived most of her life in West Virginia. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Dado, two sisters: Rosa Colo of Bluefield, WVA and Katie Tagnesi of Vinton, VA and a brother, Joe Seren of Hammond, IN. She is survived by her daughter, Nina Keating of Silver Spring, MD and her son, Ralph Dado and wife Jerry of Abingdon, VA. Also seven grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Nonnie, as she was affectionately called, was a member of Christ The King Catholic Church in Abingdon. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father Paul Maier at Christ The King Catholic Church, 820 East Main Street in Abingdon on Friday, March 18, 2005 at 5:30 p.m. The visitation will precede the Mass from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the church. Entombment will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum in Bluewell, WVA with Rev. Mr. Donald Hammond officiating. Nellie Virginia Saltz
Mrs. Nellie Virginia Saltz, age 81, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Harrison and Gay Bailey. She attended the Spoon Gap Freewill Baptist Church. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Saltz and a son, Lloyd Saltz. She is survived by: A son, Edward Saltz and wife, Letha of Bristol, Tenn.; A daughter, Barbara Wyatt and husband, James of Abingdon, Va.; Two brothers, Virgil Bailey and Chester Bailey of Abingdon, Va.; Two sisters, Christene Forbes of Mountain City, Tenn., Pansy Mitchell of Atlanta, Ga.;Four grandchildren, Angie Hudson and husband, Keith, Edward Saltz, Judy Saltz and Harold Saltz Step grandchild, David Knight; Two great grandchildren, John Saltz and Whitley Hudson; A step great grandchild, Charles Hudson A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, March 19, 2005, at 6:00 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Helen Hampson
Mrs. Helen Hampson, age 95, of the Greendale Community, died Saturday, March 19, 2005 at Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion, VA. Born on January 7, 1910 in New York, NY, Helen was a daughter of the late Julius Kossa and Maria Racz Kossa. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Erwin W. Hampson, a brother, Julius ' George' Koster; a step brother and two step sisters.Helen had lived in the Abingdon area since 1972, having moved here from New Jersey. She had attended the Carvosso United Methodist Church before her illness and had been a resident of the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie for the past 6 \'bd years Survivors include a daughter, Marie Hearl and husband Joe of Abingdon; a son, Erwin Hampson and wife Pat of Spotswood, NJ; seven grandchildren, including Michele Lilly and Lisa Hearl both of Abingdon and twelve great grandchildren. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A. M. Monday, March 21, 2005 at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Leonard Smith officiating. Interment will follow the service. Casket bearers will be family members and men of Carvosso United Methodist Church. Geraldine Litton Gobble
Geraldine Litton Gobble, age 65 passed away Sunday March 20, 2005 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry F. Gobble. She attended Highlands Chapel in the Spoon Gap Community. Survivors include three sons, William F. Gobble, Bristol, TN, Henry F. Gobble, Jr., and his wife, Karen, Bristol, TN, James Allen Gobble and his wife, Annie, Abingdon, VA, two daughters, Kathy Dishner and her husband, Rick, Bluff City, TN, Verna Hess and her husband, Paul, Lebanon, VA, one brother, Paul Litton, Powhatan, VA, one sister, Ollie Hurd, Abingdon, VA, 9 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Leo Hess officiating. Carrie McCray Henderson
Mrs. Carrie McCray Henderson, age 88, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005 at her home. Born on May 24, 1916 in the Plasterco Community of Smyth County, VA, Carrie was a daughter of the late Charlie McCray and Cara Boardwine McCray. She was also preceded in death by a son, Harold Woodward. Carrie had attended the Gospel Tabernacle Church before her illness. She was a co-owner of the Food Country USA Grocery Stores. She is survived by a son, Charles W. Henderson and wife Brenda of Abingdon; two brothers, Ralph McCray and wife Lorene and Oscar Monda McCray and wife Reba all of Saltville, VA; five grandchildren, Don W. Henderson, Debbie Henderson Creasy, Jill Woodward Fleenor, Joan Woodward Brake and John W. Woodward. Ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive Mrs. Henderson. A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Friday, March 25, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. James Beaver officiating. A Graveside interment and committal service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 26, 2005 at Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 12:30 P.M. Saturday to go in procession to the cemetery. Casket bearers will be Donald McCray, Fred Surber, John Woodward, Don Henderson, Gary McCray, Brannson McCray and Billie Joe McCray. Honorary casket bearers will be Joseph P. Johnson, Jr., Michael R. Blanche (Mom) Pippin
Blanche (Mom) Pippin, 93, of Bristol, VA passed away Saturday, March 26, 2005. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Walnut Springs Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Pippin; 2 daughters, Helen Deggs, and Betty Counts; and 1 infant son, William J. Pippin. Survivors include two sons, James Pippin of Cayce, South Carolina, and Louis Pippin of Bristol, VA; one daughter, Ruth Haselden of Hahira, Georgia; one sister, Frances Newman; grandchildren Susie Pippin, Bonney Swanson, Billy Kelly, Wayne Gillenwater, and Sherry Leal; and four great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at 11am at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, with Reverends Walter Statzer and Roger Hearl officiating. Clifford Junior 'Kipp' Davis
Mr. Clifford Junior ' Kip' Davis age 50 went to Heaven on Saturday, March 26, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was originally from Dickenson County, Virginia and had lived in Abingdon since 1975. ' Kip' worked with the girls ASA softball teams as a manager. He loved working with the girl' s softball team. He was a member of the Macedonia Church of Christ and was retired as a self-employed heavy equipment operator. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry Clifford Davis and a sister, Linda Davis. Survivors include his wife, Sharon Bailey Davis, daughters; Selena Collins and husband, Michael, Abingdon, VA, Katrina Davis of the home and future son-in-law, Michael Lewis, his mother, Arbutus Davis, Abingdon, VA, a brother, Greg Davis and wife, Tammy, Abingdon, VA, grandsons, Cody Collins and Caleb Collins, several nieces and nephews, former wife, Diana Reed and former mother-in-law, Janice Puckett both of Meadowview, VA. Mary Virginia Jackson
Mary Virginia Jackson, age 48, beloved mother and wife, went home on the wings of a dove to be with the Lord on Easter Sunday, March 27, 2005 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Born on September 3, 1956, Mary was a daughter of the late Gon and Anna Mae Sullins. She was a resident of the Tumbling Creek Community of Saltville. Mary was a certified nursing assistant and for years was employed as a caregiver to elderly and disabled people. She was a very generous and caring person and will be sadly missed by all those who knew her. Survivors include her husband, Jeff Jackson of the Tumbling Creek Community; a son, Mathew Campbell of Amherst, MA; a daughter, Tina Campbell of Atlanta, GA; a grand daughter, Sydney Jones of Abingdon; brothers, Buck Sullins and Darryl Sullins of Bald Knob, AR and Mike Sullins of Galde Spring, VA; three sisters, Linda Jean Statzer of Lebanon, VA; Shirley Strickland of North Carolina and Nancy Losey of Florida special friends, Linda Pendleton, Kim Norris, Pat Smith and Willie Bordwine. A memorial service will be conducted at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 29, 2005 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers, Jr. officiating. Eliza Vera Medley
ELIZA VERA MEDLEY, 75, of Abingdon, VA, went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 28, 2005 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Vera was a longtime member of Charles Wesley United Methodist Church, where she was an active member, and was retired from the Washington County School System with 27 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth A. Medley of Washington, DC. Survivors include one son, Kelvin Medley of Abingdon; five cousins, Robert Hill of Hanford, CA, George Sales of Charleston, SC, Connie Daggs of Virginia Beach, VA, Debbie Jones of Blountville, TN, and Audrey Mills of Charlotte, NC; and special lifelong friends, Betty Ferrier, Katherine Baker, and Marie Fugate, all of Abingdon. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, April 1, 2005 at 2pm at Charles Wesley United Methodist Church with Reverends Donald Smith and William A. Austin officiating. Dr. Royce L. B. Morris
Dr. Royce L. B. Morris died on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at the Welmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. Dr. Morris was preceded in death by his parents, Stacey E. Morris and Nell Thompson Morris Edwards, his step-father, John D. Edwards of Memphis and nephew Bradley Morris Dew of Oak Ridge, TN. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sue Ann Fleming Morris, a daughter, Kristina K. Morris of Abingdon, a son, Morgan W. Morris of Abingdon and his fiance' Rhonda Anderson and her son Brady; granddaughters, Abigail Olivia Morris and Audrey Catherine Morris of Abingdon, a sister, Jean Morris Dew and husband Richard Dew of Gatlinburg, TN and nephew Greg Dew of Albuquerque, NM. Dr. Morris was born in Calhoun County, Mississippi on April 13, 1938. He graduated from Ellard High School in 1956. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Millsaps College in Jackson , MS in 1961, where he was inducted into the Eta Sigma Phi Fraternity. After earning his degree at Millsaps in preparation for his graduate studies, he attended both the University of Kentucky and Tulane University. From 1962 \endash 1965, Dr. Morris was a teacher of Latin at Cleburne Public Schools at Cleburne, TX. He completed a Master of Arts degree in Classics at the University of Mississippi in 1966. Following the completion of his studies at Ole Miss, he began his teaching career at Emory & Henry College. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Papyrology from Duke University in 1975. Over the course of 32 years, Dr. Morris served as an instructor of Classics, Assistant Professor of Classics, Associate Professor of Classics, Professor of Classics and Chairman of the Department of Languages. In 1986, the students of Emory and Henry College bestowed upon Dr. Morris the honor of the Excellence in Teaching Award. Dr. Morris will be remembered for establishing an annual study in Roman Art and Archaeology in Rome, Italy. This class began in 1973 and is still an ongoing cultural and educational opportunity for students at Emory & Henry College. Many Students have benefited from this unique opportunity. Among his professional accomplishments were the presentations of papers and published works in his professional field, both nationally and internationally. He was the recipient of numerous awards and offices, including President of the Classical Association of Virginia, a James Still Fellow and the National Endowment of the Humanities Award. Dr. Morris was an avid reader, primarily of the Civil War and World War II and had a love for travel. His travels included Pearl Harbor, Washington , D.C., New York City, Chicago, San Diego, Niagara Falls, Grand Canyon, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, London, Paris, Rome, Egypt, Berlin, Denmark, Naples, Sicily and Gatlinburg. He married his high school sweetheart and was the only suitor that his future father-in-law would approve. The joys of his elder years were his granddaughters with whom he shared his love of reading and travel. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his daughter and son. A graveside committal and interment service will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Friday, April 1, 2005 at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to attend the service. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, April 2, 2005 at the Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service Saturday in the church fellowship hall or anytime at their home. Mary T. Waugh Jones
Mrs. Mary T. Waugh Jones died at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Abingdon late Tuesday evening, March 29, 2005. Mrs. Jones, age 93 and a native of Glade Spring, was born July 22, 1911, the fifth child of the late Wiley B. and Gillyard Johnson Waugh. Mrs. Jones was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Glade Spring where, over a period of 70 years, she served as treasurer, secretary, pianist, trustee, Sunday School teacher and superintendent, communion steward, and a number of other positions. She was educated in Glade Spring, Morristown, Tennessee, and Cincinnati, Ohio. For many years, she worked in homes of many Glade Spring families including Mr. and Mrs. Robert Porterfield, Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Allison, Mr. and Mrs. Aker Williams, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hutton, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Orr, and others. Additionally, she worked in the office of Dr. J. T. Goodman. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jones was predeceased by five brothers and two sisters as well as her former husband, William Jones, and her oldest son, Robert J. Jones. She is survived by her devoted younger son, Dr. Jerry Jones, Glade Spring; nieces Rose Waugh Swain and Jean Waugh Sherman of Cincinnati, and Dr. Dyanne Waugh-Croslin of Hyattsville, Maryland; daughter-in-law Helen Jones of Wilson, North Carolina; sister-in law Ethel Jones Smith, Abingdon; other nieces and nephews; special caregiver Dorothy Tolliver of Emory; and special friend Ezekiel Johnson of Glade Spring. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, April 4, 2005 at 3pm at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street, Abingdon, VA with Rev. Dr. William Weldon, Rev. Tim Kobler, and Nathan Kilbourne officiating. Burial will be in Glade Spring's Mt. Rose Cemetery. There will be no visitation; however, friends may call at any time at the home: 376 N. Elmer Layden Farris
Mr. Elmer Layden Farris, age 67, died Thursday, March 31, 2005, at his home. He was born in Saltville, Virginia and had lived most of his life in Glade Spring, Virginia. He was the son of the late Ralph W. Farris and Mary Farris Adair. Elmer had attended the First Christian Church in Saltville. He was a retired U. S. Navy veteran serving in Vietnam and retired after 22 years of service. He had been employed at the Emory & Henry College for 8 years before retiring. He enjoyed playing golf and was always at the Emory & Henry football games where he started tailgating and cooking breakfast. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sue Farris Honaker and Betty Farris Zavala. He is survived by two daughters, Lynn Farris and Tammy Jenkins and husband, John all of Glade Spring, Va.; four brothers, Harold Farris and wife, Rebecca of Emory, Va., Curtis Adair and wife, Mary Ann of Kingsport, Tenn., Moe Adair and wife, Sharon of Bristol, Va., Joe Adair and wife, Debbie of Glade Spring, Va.; three sisters, Ann Farris of Glade Spring, Va., Eleanor Farris Valasco and husband, Pete of Houston, Texas, Freida Adair Crutchfield of Abingdon, Va.; four grandchildren, Beth Farris McAllister, Scott Jenkins, Brian Jenkins and Aaron Jenkins; three great grandchildren, Haevyn McAllister, Sydney McAllister and Landon Jenkins; 18 nieces and nephews and several great nieces and nephews A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, April 2, 2005, at 2:00 PM in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Nancy Ann Mullins Fleming
Mrs. Nancy Ann Mullins Fleming, age 90, died Thursday, March 31, 2005. Born on September 30, 1912 in Dickenson County, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Alexander Mullins and Hulda Dutton Mullins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Fleming and a son, Gerald Fleming. Nancy had lived in Cumberland County, NC before moving to the Abingdon area in 1976. She is survived by four daughters, Rita Norwood of Bonita Spring, FL, Jackie Franke Castle of Murrell' s Inlet, SC, Janice Lambert of Abingdon, Haroletta Fleming and Myra Fleming both Greensboro, NC.; sixteen grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Monday, April 4, 2005 in the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway (located on the grounds of Forest Hills Memory Gardens) with Rev. Jerry Eggers and Rev. Bud Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Grandsons will serve as casket bearers.
