Beatrice Woodward Cox
Mrs. Beatrice Woodward Cox, age 91, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004 in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was a native of Holston, Virginia and lived in Washington County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Mr. & Mrs. William E. Woodward. She was a graduate of Greendale High School and graduated from Radford College in 1933. She taught at Greendale, Wallace and William King High Schools and at Abingdon High School for fifteen years. She was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women, the Wesley Bible Class and served on the Administrative Board in earlier years. Beatrice was a member of the Washington County Education Association, the Washington County Retired Teachers and the Virginia Education Association. She was a member of the Abingdon Booklover' s Club and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Roy Cox, her sisters, Dessie Atwell, Hester Price, Regina Woodward and brothers, Herbert Woodward, Hubert Woodward and Homer Woodward. She is survived by her son, Dr. William Walter Cox and daughter-in-law, Vicki Butt Cox of Chesapeake, Va.; Her daughter, Elizabeth Moon and son-in-law, Travis Moon of Charlotte, N.C.; One granddaughter, Lesley Cox of Tampa, Fla.; Two grandsons, Wes Moore of Chicago, Ill. and Brad Moore of Dallas, Tx.; Several nieces and nephews A funeral service will be conducted Friday, September 3, 2004 at 3:00 PM in the Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Rowland officiating. Burial will follow in the Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1PM until the time of service Friday at the church. Pallbearers will be Dwight Alley, Eddie Jonas, Joe Chase, Tammy Farnsworth, Vic Taylor, Fred St. John, C.W. Harris and Don Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be men of the Wesley Bible Class. Brenda Widener, age 52, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Edith Widener. Survivors include a son, Howard ' Had' Pierce and wife, Heather, two special grandchildren, Brandon and Caitlin of Chilhowie, VA, a loving companion, Bill Buchanan of Abingdon, three brothers, Bill Widener of Bristol, TN, Jack Widener, Abingdon, Claude ' Tootie' Widener, Abingdon, several nieces and nephews, a special nephew, Charlie Widner of Abingdon, three special cousins, Bonnie Woodward of Saltville, VA, Barbara Rutledge and Rita DeFriece of Abingdon. The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, September 4, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tommy Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Tim Widener, Sherman Moore, Wayne Cullop, Michael Garrett, Robert Garrett, Leroy Howell. John Wesley Salyer
MR. JOHN WESLEY SALYER, age 78, died Saturday, September 4, 2004, at the Greystone Health Care Center. He was born in Lebanon, Virginia and had lived in Hansonville until moving to Bristol. He was a retired employee of the Sullivan County Highway Department and was a U. S. Army veteran. John was an honorary member of the Seldom Seen Motorcycle Club. Survivors include:

Elizabeth Smith Musser
Elizabeth (Jackie) Smith Musser, age 84, passed away on Monday, September 06, 2004 at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Berta Smith; her husband, Jack Musser, one sister, Vivian Woolwine; and three brothers, Willoughby Smith, Frank Smith, and Wallace Smith. Mrs. Musser was born on January 13, 1920 in Abingdon. She had lived in Abingdon most of her life. She was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and Education Chairman. She was a volunteer for the Mental Health Social Club and Abingdon Arts Depot. Mrs. Musser is survived by her two daughters, Suzanne Edwards and her husband, Bill, of Atlanta, GA, and Libby McLellan and her husband, Doug, of Centreville, VA; five grandchildren, Neil McLellan of Orlando, FL, Sarah Campbell and Husband, Tom, of Woodstock, GA, Kevin McLellan and wife, Shirley, of Leesburg, VA, Molly McLellan of Los Angeles, CA, and Anna Edwards of Auburn, AL; and three great grandchildren, Matthew and Amanda McLellan and Grace Campbell. Honorary pallbearers will be Gladys Cornelius and Dr. Catherine Smith. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Musser' s nephews, Jim Woolwine, Sam Woolwine, George Woolwine, Michael Smith, Daniel Smith, Wallace E. Smith, Tim Smith, Charlie Smith, and Steve Smith. The family wishes to thank the special caregivers of their mother, Edna Barrett, Margaret Cartwright, and Sally Fisher. They would also like to thank Hospice and Palliative Care of Virginia. Mr. Elmer Copley, age 93,died Monday, September 6, 2004, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born October 2, 1910 in Cassie, West Virginia and was the son of the late James D. and Lilly Jane Francis Copley. He was a member of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Chauncey, West Virginia and attended the Abingdon Church of the Nazarene in Abingdon, Virginia. Elmer was a retired miner and a member of the UMWA District #17 in West Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Romans Copley ; a son in law, Averal Bias, Jr. He is survived:

Mr. George Edward ' Buddy' Leedy, age 65, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, September 7, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Buddy was a native of Kentucky and was raised in the Carbo community of Russell County. He was a graduate of William King High School and had lived in Abingdon for the past thirty-one years. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Food City of Abingdon, VA. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Pearl Leedy, brothers, Paul, James, Dean and Jack, sisters, Ruby and Barbara. James Franklin Wilson
James Franklin ' Stiffy' Wilson, age 84, went home to be with the Lord on September 9, 2004 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Boone' s Creek Tennessee on January 18, 1920 and was a son of the late Samuel Clinton Wilson and Pearl McCroskey Wilson. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter. He had lived most of his life in Washington County, VA. ' Stiffy' was a dairy farmer and owner and operator of Wilson Farms in Abingdon and was a WW II Veteran having served in the U. S. Navy. He was a member, former deacon and treasurer of the Maple Grove Presbyterian Church in Abingdon. He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Nina Vaught Wilson; one son, David Wilson and wife Barbara of Abingdon; two daughters, Nancy W. Gwin of Abingdon and Susan W. Jackson and husband Curtis of Bristol, VA; five grandchildren, Garrett Gwin and wife Crystal of Hopes Mill, NC; James Wilson and fiance' Heather and her children, Katie, Chad and Kendra all of Jonesboro, TN; Diana Parker and husband Garrett of Ashburn, VA; Adam Wilson and fiance' Sarah Leonard and Jenna Wilson all of Abingdon; one great grandchild, Andrea Gwin ; a brother, Harold Wilson and wife Rita of Melbourne, FL; two sisters, Kate W. David McDonald Davidson
David McDonald Davidson, born January 14, 1951, passed away Thursday, September 9, 2004. David served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of Painter Creek Church of Christ in Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall and Cora Davidson. Survivors include his wife, Nancee Sharon Davidson; daughter, Samantha Davidson, and stepdaughter, Robyn Clevinger, of Beaufort, S.C.; two stepsons, James Scott Smith of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Robert Bryan Smith, of Albany, Georgia; five grandchildren, Cody, Nicholas, Samantha, Amanda, and Aundrea; two brothers, Danny Davidson and Larry Davidson of Tazewell, VA; one sister, Phyllis, and several nieces and nephews. David will be sadly missed by all. William Roy Calhoun
Mr. William Roy Calhoun, age 71, died Sunday, September 12, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Calhoun was born on September 29, 1932 in Decatur, Georgia and was a son of the late William Roy Calhoun and Byrd Calhoun. He and his wife have lived in Abingdon since 1999. Mr. Calhoun was a U. S. Navy Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Montezuma, GA. He had retired as Vice President of Community Bank and Trust of Cornelia, GA and was also a member of the Level Grove Baptist Church in Cornelia. He is survived by his wife, Loretta J. Calhoun; two daughters and sons-in-law, Janet C. Moody and Dr. Bill Moody of Abingdon; Karen Pearce and Dr. Thomas Preston Pearce of Prague, Czech Republic; a sister Gary Calhoun Pass of Dunwoody, GA; and eight grandchildren, William Michael Moody, Melissa Lynne Moody, Robert McAfee Moody, Elizabeth Grace Moody, David Preston Pearce, Lauren Nicole Pearce, Jessica Leigh Pearce and Andrew Michael Pearce. The funeral service for William Roy Calhoun will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, September 16, 2004 in Farris Funeral Chapel. Mr. Barry Joseph McCurry, age 58, died Friday, September 10, 2004 at his home. Barry was a native of Sullivan County, TN, was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and East Tennessee University and had served in the U. S. Navy. He established Custom Car Colors, Bristol, TN and Jack' s Car Colors, Kingsport, TN. Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Lois McCurry and grandparents, J. A. and Mattie McCurry. Survivors include a son, Maddix McCurry, a fiance' , Sandra Lynn Moseley, her step-children, Codie and Thorn Moseley, a brother, Craig McCurry, a sister, Debbie McCurry, nephews, Jeremy and Jackson McCurry, a niece, Jessica McCurry. Marlena Jan Pruitt
Marlena Jan (Marnie) Pruitt passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2004 from injuries she received in an automobile accident. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, a 1992 graduate of John Battle High School and had received an Associates Degree in Police Science. She was a WIBC member at Interstate Bowl. Marnie was a veteran, serving in the United States Army. Survivors include her husband, Michael Allen Pruitt; one daughter, McKayla Hobbs; one son, Michael Dalton Pruitt; parents, Marlene and John Dickenson; father, J. Randall Hobbs, Jr.; brothers, Trey Hobbs and Darrell Dickenson; grandparents, Joseph Sr. and Minnie Hobbs, Virginia and Charles Evans, J.C. and Katherine Dickenson; great grandmother, Angeleen Hobbs Trivett; two nieces, Abbie and Sha Dickenson; two nephews, Matthew Taylor and Blake Hobbs; special aunt and uncle, Ada and Gilbert Cox; special cousin, Teresa Carter; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Harmon ' Lester' Sproles, age 70, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Harmon was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Nannie Sproles, four sisters, Sally Alexander, Betty Sanford, Elizabeth Sproles and Hattie Sproles. Survivors include four sisters, Lena Van Huss and Gay Nell Sproles both of Meadowview, VA, Ruby Walsh of Bristol and Colleen Price of Abingdon, three brothers, Oscar Sproles of Bristol , Jessie Sproles of Abingdon and Ernie Sproles of Crouse, NC, several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted Friday, September 17, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Jack Sprinkle and Rev. Rick Cuddy. There will no visitation in the funeral home. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m.

James D. McIver
Mr. James D. McIver, age 70, died Wednesday, September 15, 2004, at the Grace Healthcare Center. There are no known survivors but he left behind many dear friends behind at Grace Healthcare Center. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday, September 19, 2004, at 1:00 PM in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Everyone is ask to meet at the cemetery. Etta Mullins Honeycutt
Mrs. Etta Mullins Honeycutt, age 99, passed away, Wednesday, September 15, 2004, at the Heartland Healthcare Center in Florida. She had lived several years in Florida and prior to moving there had lived in Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. She was a member of the Pilgrim' s Home Old Regular Baptist Church. Etta was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Mullins and her second husband, Judd Honeycutt. Survivors include A daughter, Helen Church of Green Cove Springs, Fla. Several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews A graveside service will be held Monday, September 20, 2004, at 2:00 PM in the Mausoleum Chapel of Knollkreg Memorial Park with Elder Arnold Bailey officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 1:50 PM at the mausoleum of Knollkreg Memorial Park.

Cheryl Smith Wallace
Cheryl Smith Wallace, age 60, died Friday, September 17, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born on August 22, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Laban Smith and Wilma Meade Smith.. Cheryl was an artist from a very early age, but began her formal training at 18, entering the graphic design program at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She later graduated with a Bachelor of Art degree and did her graduate work in art at East Tennessee State University. Cheryl was a highly respected artist who exhibited art shows at the Virginia Highlands Festival and shows held by the Bristol Virginia Art Guild, as well as the Gallery at the Arts Depot in Abingdon and various showings throughout the region. Ms. Wallace was a loved and respected art teacher at Lebanon High School for over 30 years. She also taught art classes for Southwest Virginia Community College. Cheryl inspired students to find their own creative talent which led many to strive to succeed at their own art careers, because she wasn' t just a teacher, she was a friend. ' If your art is not personal, if you do not have a passion for it, then you should have no reason to complete a piece of artwork,' were the words she used to describe her passion for art. Her family and friends admired her creative talents and love of life. She is survived by a daughter, Dale McGill of Morgantown, WV; a son, David Wallace of Cleveland, VA; a sister, Fern Smith Yane of Hot Springs, VA; two grandchildren, Keelin and Rohen McGill; her step-mother, Catherine Smith of Bristol, VA and an aunt, Juanita Garland of Kingsport, TN. She will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew her. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Monday, September 20, 2004 in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Eva June Creasy, 75, formerly of Washington County, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2004, in Lenoir, North Carolina. A member of Lenoir Church of Christ, she was preceded in death by her parents, Elliott and Myrtle Thomas Widner. Survivors include four daughters, Gladys Wilson, of Abingdon, Peggy Icenhour, of Lenoir, Linda Billiter, of Abingdon, and Kathy Brown, of Lenoir; three sons, Ernie Creasy, of Milton, WVA, Leon Creasy, of Morganton, NC, and Steve Creasy of Morganton; 20 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and seven sisters. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at 2pm at Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Walter Luttrell
Mr. Walter Luttrell, age 87, died Monday, September 20, 2004 in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Walter is survived by special friends, Joe and Ruby Self, Abingdon, VA, several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, September 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Bob Reynolds and Rev. Paul Price officiating. Interment will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Curtis Hunt, Jr., Brandon Wayne Louthian, Doug Kestner, James Self, Hank Price, Jimmy Riley. Honorary pallbearers will be Bud Widener, Paul Sullins, Jr. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. in the funeral home.

Stella Victoria Ryburn
Mrs. Stella Victoria Ryburn, widow of Oliver Ryburn of Glade Spring, VA, died Tuesday, September 21, 2004. She was a native of Smyth County, VA and had spent many of her years in North Fork, WV. In 1962, she and Oliver moved to Baltimore County, MD. Mrs. Ryburn was a retired school teacher with the Anne Arundel County School System in Annapolis, MD. In 1977, Stella and Oliver retired and moved to Glade Spring, VA where she was an active member of the Old Glade Presbyterian Church. After Oliver' s death, she moved to the Presbyterian Retirement Home in Georgia. Survivors include two sons, Glenn O. Ryburn, Jr. of Fairfax County, VA and David W. Ryburn of Warner Robins, GA; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Friday, September 24, 2004 in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring with Rev. Timothy Bird officiating. Casket bearers will be selected from family and friends. The family will receive friends from 1:00 \endash 2:30 P.M. Friday at the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service. A funeral procession will follow to the cemetery after the visitation. The family has invited all of Mrs. Ryburn' s friends and family to a reception at the Martha Washington Inn at 4:30 P.M. Friday after the funeral service.

Chrystal Veal Parmley
Mrs. Chrystal Veal Parmley, age 79, died Wednesday, September 22, 2004 at Johnston Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, Bob Parmley; two sons, David Parmley and Bobby Parmley both of Abingdon; a brother, Beverly Veal of Portsmouth, VA and various nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 25, 2004 in the Bethel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Cathy Carpenter officiating. Casket bearers will be James Allison, Kyle Reed, Jim Riley, John Roberts, Sr. and John Roberts Jr. Honorary casket bearers will be John Sauer, Billy Caldwell, Tom Caldwell, John Eden, C. M. Rice, Charles Rice, Murl Durham, D. L. Stout, Tom Casey and John Wright. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Mountain Mission School, 1 Hurley Street, Grundy, VA 24614. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 \endash 2:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Rebecca Preston Reeves
Rebecca Preston Reeves, age 52, died Thursday, September 23, 2004 at her residence in the Lodi Community. She was born in Washington County and was the daughter of the late Thomas (Hal) Reeves and Aileen Hope Preston Reeves. Rebecca was a graduate of Liberty Hall High School and King College. She had lived and worked in the Bristol area for a number of years prior to her death. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Walter and Etta Lowery Preston, and her paternal grandparents, Thomas E. and Martha DeBusk Reeves. She is survived by one aunt, Helen E. Reeves, also of the Lodi Community. Graveside services will be conducted at 2pm on Tuesday, September 28, 2004 at Knollkreg Memorial Park, Abingdon, VA.

Tom Caldwell
Walter Thomas Caldwell, age 63, died Sunday, September 26, 2004 at the Welmont Bristol Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Born on December 29, 1940 in the Bethel Community of Washington County, Tom was a son of Mary Virginia Caldwell and the late T. C. Caldwell. Tom had owned and operated AIM Supply Company for thirty years and was a faithful member of Bethel Presbyterian Church where he had served as deacon and elder. An avid and experienced horseman, Tom raised and bred American Quarter horses. With the love that he had for his horses, Tom was able to promote their wellbeing and the joy that they brought him through his membership and support of the American Quarter Horse Association and the American Quarter Horse Foundation. Tom was a longtime member of the Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge #140 of AF & AM. In addition to his mother, Tom, a faithful servant of his Lord, is survived by his wife Wilma; sons, Greg Caldwell and wife Patty of Meadowview, Jon Caldwell and wife Erin of Raleigh, NC and Bracken Caldwell of the home; daughters, Kellie Frost and husband Steve and Kerrie Bishop and husband Mike all of Damascus; his brother, Billy Lynn Caldwell of Abingdon; an aunt, Mary Craig Rhea of Meadowview; an uncle, Harry Minton of Portland, TN; grandchildren, Savannah Caldwell; Rachel and Claudia Frost; Hannah and Dillon DeArmond, Brady Bishop, Olivia and Sophia Caldwell; step granddaughters, Amanda and Ashton Bishop as well as his many wonderful sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 P.M., Wednesday at the Bethel Presbyterian Church with Rev. Allen McCulloch officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. A graveside Masonic Service will be conducted by the Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge #104 of AF & AM.. Casket bearers will be Jerry Webb, Bobby Mitchell, Ernest Wright, Dan Sullivan, Boyd Greer, Jerry Adams and his grandson Dillon DeArmond. Honorary casket bearers will be James Allison, Tom Casey, Myrl Dunham, John Eden, David Henry, Rhea Jones, Bob Parmley, Jim Riley, Charles Rice, C. M. Rice, Kyle Reed, John Roberts, Sr., John Roberts, Jr., D. L. Stout, John Wright and John Sauers. In place of flowers, the family has asked that those wishing to honor Tom' s memory should do so by making memorial donations to the general fund of Bethel Presbyterian Church, 19391 Bethel Road, Abingdon, VA 24211. Clarence Charles Wilson
Deacon Clarence Charles Wilson departed this life Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport, TN after a long illness. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Ruth Wilson; children, Wanda Hariston, Renee Bunche, Tracy Sorrell, DeWayne Bunche, and Moneka Bunche; fifteen grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; mother-in-law, Betty Bunche; one sister, Gladys Wilson; three brothers, Rev. William Austin, J.C. Austin, and E. Logan; uncle, Bobby Bunche; aunt, Rose Bunche; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 1, 2004 at 1pm at Mount Carmel Tabernacle, 100 East State St., Bristol, TN with Pastor Ann Johnson and others officiating. Interment will follow in Meadowview Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 12 noon until time of the service at the church.

Pauline Aiken Bagby
Mrs. Pauline Aiken Bagby, age 94, died Monday, September 27, 2004 at the Westhaven Living Center in Abingdon. She was a former resident of Richmond before moving to the Abingdon a few years ago. Mrs. Bagby was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Gotham and was the widow of John Bagby, Jr. She is survived by a son John Bagby III of Richmond; a daughter, Pauline Bagby Gotham of Abingdon; a sister, Phyllis A. Todd of Richmond; five granddaughters, Helen G. Henley of Abingdon, Anne G. Thompson of Harrisonburg, VA, Lee B. Vivarette of Richmond, Sarah P. Bagby of Richmond and Elizabeth Bagby of Charleston, SC; nine great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thank you to Linda Houser for her devoted care and attention to Mrs. Bagby. The funeral service will be held Thursday in the Westhampton Baptist Church in Richmond with burial to follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the Westhampton Baptist Church, 6112 Three Chopt Road, Richmond, VA 23226-2732. Mrs. Bagby has been taken to the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue, Richmond .

Arlington Riffe, Jr.
Mr. Arlington Riffe, Jr., age 75, passed away, Tuesday, September 28, 2004, after a lengthy illness. Born in Wyoming County, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Arlington and Vergie Riffe, Sr. He was a retired employee of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, a deacon at the Painter Creek Church of Christ and a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He was also a member of the Iaeger, West Virginia Masonic Lodge 148 AF & AM. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Arvella Riffe; two sons, Arlie Riffe and wife, Mary Ann of Abingdon and Anthony Riffe and wife, Cynthia of Grundy, Va.; one sister, Viola Holcomb of Bristol, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Preston Riffe of Abingdon, Virginia, Danielle and Courtney Riffe of Princeton, West Virginia. A funeral service will be conducted Friday, October 1, 2004, at 11:00 AM in the Painter Creek Church of Christ with Minister Richard Gaminde officiating. Interment will follow in the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia at 2:30 PM. Members of the Harmon Masonic Lodge #222 AF & AM will conduct Masonic graveside rites. The family will receive friends from 6 \endash 9 PM Thursday at the 427 East Main Street location of Farris Funeral Service. Silas Ellar McCracken
Mr. Silas Ellar McCracken, age 64, died Wednesday, September 29, 2004 in the Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lois McCracken and a great granddaughter, Domitila Gomez. Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean McCracken, Granite Falls, NC, two sons, Silas Edward McCracken, Granite Falls, NC, Steve McCracken, Bean Station, TN, two daughters, Thelma Watson, Granite Falls, NC, Donna Jones, Abingdon, VA, one step-son, Michael Lee Severt, Jr., Hudson, NC, two brothers, William Stroup, Meadowview, VA and Tom Stroup, Saltville, VA, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted Sunday October 3, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Paul Stanley officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Johnny Jones, Brandon Jones, Tyler McCracken, Eddie Thomas, Bill Stroup, Tom Stroup, Lee Severt. The family will receive friends Sunday from noon until 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.

Anna Belle Call
Anna Belle Call, age 76, died Thursday, September 30, 2004 at her home. Anna Belle was born on July 19, 1928 in Washington County and was a daughter of the late James E. Thayer, Sr. and Mary Sue Thayer. She was also preceded in death by a brother Hunter H. Thayer and sisters, Helen Thayer and Ruby Price. She had formerly worked at the Intermountain Telephone Company, the Washington County Bank and was currently employed at Call Brothers of VA, Inc. in Glade Spring which her husband has owned and operated since 1952. Anna Belle was a member of Washington Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and had served in various offices. The family would like to give a special thank you to Sue Thayer, Kathleen Martin, Marie Buttry and Edna Young for their friendship and help during her illness. Also a special thank you to Dr. Anthony DeSalvo, Dr. Thomas Johnson and the staff of the Cancer Outreach Associates, Dr. Richard Mullens, Dr. Casey McReynolds, Dr. Ernest Coburn, Steve Baker and the staff of Johnston Memorial Hospital. She is survived by her husband, M. R. ' Jim' Call; a daughter, Karen Shaffer and husband Mike of Glade Spring; a son, Ricky Call and wife Patti also of Glade Spring; a brother, James E. ' Buzz' Thayer of Abingdon; two sisters, Susie T. Blevins of Abingdon and Peggy T. Arnold of Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Tori Call, Isaac Call, Anna Sophia Call, Josh Shaffer and Jennifer Shaffer, a special friend, Dorthea Price of Abingdon and several nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be conducted Sunday at Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring with Rev. Mark McFadden and Rev. Larry Lusk officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Lenny Blevins Hayes
Lenny Blevins Hayes, age 86 of the Widener' s Valley Community, died Thursday, September 28, 2004 at her home. Born on March 21, 1918 in Washington County, Lenny was a daughter of the late Jacob Blevins and Reginer Surber Blevins. She was the last surviving member of her siblings having been preceded in death by fourteen brothers and sisters, a grandson and a son-in-law. She was of the Methodist Faith. Survivors include three daughters, Bessie Durham and husband Larry of Rapid City, SD, Ada Widener of Damascus and Joyce Jones and husband Douglas of Damascus; eight grandchildren, Lynn Prater, Randy Jones, Carolyn Trent, Ervin Widener, Cheryl Durham, Mary Prater, Anita Jones, Chandra Durham and nine great grandchildren. The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 P.M., Sunday, October 3, 2004 in Farris Funeral Chapel, 427 E. Main Street, Abingdon with Rev. Elaine Murphy officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday immediately following the funeral service. The interment and committal service will be at 11:00 A.M., Monday, October 4, 2004 at the Greenwood Cemetery in the Alvarado Community. Casket bearers will be selected from family members. Those attending the interment and committal service on Monday are asked to assemble at the cemetery by 10:50 A.M.
