Robert Carl Casey
Mr. Robert Carl (Bob) Casey, 72, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Casey was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County. He was the son of the late Bert and Bessie Cuttie Casey and was a member of Gospel Tabernacle. He was the former owner of Tastee Freeze and was a former assistant kitchen manager of Martha Washington Inn. He is survived by his wife, Laura Casey; two daughters, Lana Sue Worley and husband David Wayne Worley, Janet Carol Riley and husband Timothy Owen Riley; three grandchildren, Amanda Nicole Anderson, Matthew Riley and Mackenzie Riley, all of Abingdon; two brothers, Jackie Nash of Abingdon, Tom Casey of Bristol Virginia; two sisters, Ruth Gobble, Betty June Morrison and Joyce Harmon, all of Abingdon. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 4, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Farris Funeral Chapel. Rev. Paul Price will officiate. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Mickey Gregory, Steven Gregory, Terry Gregory, Buddy Parris, Gary Gregory, Lonnie Farmer, Bunny Toliver and Jerry Belise. Honorary pallbearers will be Gary Roark, Ronnie Roark, Bobby Hamilton, Greg Farmer and George Wyatt.

Lelia Radford Hulvey
Mrs. Lelia Radford Hulvey died at Johnston Memorial Hospital in April 3, 2003 at the age of 91 following a lengthy illness. She was a daughter of the late Thomas C. and Ida P. Radford. She was born in Franklin County, Va., on March 5, 1912, and lived in both Staunton and Roanoke, prior to retiring to Abingdon in 1977. She was the widow of John William Hulvey. She is survived by sisters, Pauline Page of Roanoke and Virginia VanFossen of Staunton, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. John Thomas Hulvey and wife Betsy of Abingdon and Dr. Larry William Hulvey and wife Judy of Jesup, Ga.; grandchildren, Elizabeth K. Hulvey and Margaret L. Hulvey of Charlottesville, Va., Dr. John Thomas Hulvey Jr. of Roanoke, Michael Christopher Hulvey and wife Bonney of Brunswick, Ga., Jonathon Patrick Hulvey of Athens, Ga.; and two great-grandsons. A graveside service will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Roanoke on Saturday, April 5, 2003, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Michael Hostetter officiating. Eulis Lampkins
Mr. Eulis Winfield Lampkins, age 70, passed away at his home on Friday, April 4, 2003. Born in Russell County, VA on September 9, 1932, he was a son of the late Gilmer Lampkins and Eliza Booth Lampkins. He was preceeded in death by his wife of 47 years, Catherine Christine Lampkins; two brothers, Robert Lampins and Emmett Lampkins; two sisters, Myrtle Taylor and Lydia Hale and a great grandson, Austin Shelton. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mike & Sheila Lampkins of Chilhowie; two daughters and son-in-law, Connie Widener and Kathy & Dartty Evans all of Marion; four sisters, Betty Jo Hartsock of Morristown, TN, Bonnie Tillman & Lena Dunn both of Richmond, VA and Bernice Arnold of Lenoir, NC; two brothers, Clarence Lampkins of Abingdon, VA and Floyd Lampkins of Richlands, VA; seven grandchildren, Kelsey Lampkins, Brittany Lampkins, Tasha Widener, Tammy Sheppard, Michael Shelton, Amanda Shelton, and Tim Evans; four great-grandchildren, Hanna Sheppard, Kaitlin Shelton, Tyler Jarman and Austin Evans; Mr. Lampkins is also survived by a special companion, Sue Blankenbeckler of Marion. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M., Monday, April, 7, 2003 in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jerry Creasy officiating. Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Jane W. Sandefur
Mrs. Jane Wright Sandefur, age 78, formerly of Glade Spring, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2003 at the Brian Center in Weber City, VA Born in Washington County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Roy Wright and Catherine Taylor Wright. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Sandefur and a brother T. R. Wright, Jr. Prior to her retirement, Mrs. Sandefur was employed by Valley Health Care Center for 30 years. She was a member of the Byars Cobb Memorial United Methodist Church and at the time of her death, was being ministered to by St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She is survived by two daughters, Catherine Sandefur of Abingdon, VA and Theresa Sandefur of Weber City, VA; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Joanne Sandefur of Charleston, SC and David and Donna Sandefur of Mechanicsville, VA; grandsons,, Ryan Sandefur and Taylor Sandefur both of Mechanicsville, VA ; two brothers, Paul Wright and wife Mary Ellen of Warrenton, VA, and J. B. Wright and wife Joyce of Jacksburg, TN; a sister-in-law, Peggy Wright of Chilhowie, VA; brother-in-law, Howard Sandefur of Glade Spring and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 6:30 P.M., Monday, April 7, 2003 in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Craig Wylie officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service Monday night. Interment and committal services will be held at 12 Noon Tuesday, April 8, 2003 at the Baptist Cemetery in Glade Spring. Chaffin Roseberry McCall
Mrs. Chaffin Roseberry McCall age 68, of Abingdon died Sunday April 6, 2003 at her home. A native of Pulaski, Virginia, Mrs. McCall had lived in Abingdon for 56 years. She graduated from William King High School and was a retired receptionist having worked at Abingdon Medical Group and French H. Moore, Jr. and French H. Moore III Dental Group. Mrs. McCall was a member of Abingdon Bible Church. She was a member of Johnston Memorial Hosptial Auxillary and Red Hat Society. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, William H. “Bill” McCall; one son: Dr. Gary W. McCall and wife Jimmie Lynn of Luling, LA; one daughter: Judy McCall Lutzo and husband Ray of Abingdon; four sisters: Jane Williams of Knoxville, TN; Margaret Wood of Logan, AL; Edna Becker of Asheville, NC; Susan Carpenter of Lake Charles, LA; five grandchildren: Wes McCall, Will McCall, Walt McCall, Nicholas Lutzo, and Brittany Lutzo. The family will receive friends from 6- 8 PM at Abingdon Bible Church followed by a funeral service at 8 PM. Rev. Paul J. Bufford will officiate. A committal service will be held Wednesday April 9, 2003 at 10 AM at Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Alma Juanita Hamilton
Mrs. Alma Juanita Hamilton, 68, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was born in West Virginia and had lived in Washington County since 1968. She was of the Baptist faith and preceded in death by her husband, Carl F. Hamilton. She is survived by one son, Carl Gene Hamilton of Glade Spring; two daughters, Brenda Sapirman of Hollywood, Fla., and Linda Elmore of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; her mother, Erna Hash of Twilight, W.Va.; one brother, James Hash of West Virginia; two sisters, Elaine Bailey of Beckley, W.Va., and Hazel Hash of Twilight; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Ralph H. VanHuss, Sr.
Mrs. Ralph Houston VanHuss, Sr., age 55, of Abingdon, died Thursday, April 10, 2003. Mr. VanHuss was a native and life-long resident of Washington County. He was self-employed as a brick mason and a member of Macedonia Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his father, John R. VanHuss; brothers Charles H. VanHuss, John Allen VanHuss, James C. VanHuss and Paul F. VanHuss; sisters, Goldie Marie Tugman and Ella Mae Faw. Survivors include his mother, Lettie Mae Kiser VanHuss of Abingdon; son, Ralph Houston (Jay) VanHuss, Jr. of Abingdon; brothers, Robert L. VanHuss and wife Ruth of Biloxi, MS, Gary M. VanHuss and wife Terry of Abingdon, Harold D. Kevin Blane Taylor
Mr. Kevin Blane Taylor, age 43, went to be with the Lord, Friday, April 11, 2003. Kevin had lived most of his life in Washington County and was preceded in death by a brother, Perrion Lee Taylor. He was a member of Highlands Fellowship. Survivors include two daughters, Crystal Taylor Boyd, Bristol Virginia, and Laura Ann Reese, Bristol Virginia; his father, Ira Taylor, Meadowview; his mother, Celia Moore, Abingdon; two brothers, Cody Taylor and Stacy Greer, both of Meadowview; two sisters, Cynthia Taylor Baumgardner, Abingdon and Robin Barbrow, Chilhowie; a granddaughter, Abigail Rene Boyd; and special niece, Desirae Luchini. The funeral service will be conducted Monday, April 14, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel. Pastor Bill Edmondson will officiate. Lettie Mae VanHuss
Mrs. Lettie Mae VanHuss, age 89, died Thursday, April 17, 2003 at her home. Born in Russell County on July 5, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Houston James Kiser and Orphic Wolfe Kiser. She was the widow of John R. "Bob" VanHuss and was also preceded in death by her children, Marie Tugman, Charles H. VanHuss, Ella Mae Faw, James C. VanHuss, John A. VanHuss, Paul A. VanHuss and Ralph H. VanHuss. Mrs. VanHuss was a resident of the Watauga Community for many years and was a longtime and devoted member of the Macedonia Church of Christ. She is survived by three sons: Robert L. VanHuss and wife Ruth of Biloxi, Miss.; Harold D. VanHuss and wife Brenda of Roanoke, Va.; and Gary M. VanHuss and wife Terry of Abingdon; four daughters: Bonnie J. Estep of Abingdon; Doris Yarber and husband Riley of Glade Spring; Linda C. Anderson and husband Lewis of Mouth of Wilson, Va.; and Janet McClelland and husband Herbert of Lake City, Fla.; a brother, Grover Kiser of York, Pa.; two sisters: Frances Smith of Silver Creek, N.Y.; and Minnie Cox of Melbourne, Fla.; 27 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Scotty G. O'Quinn
Mr. Scotty G. O’Quinn, age 41, died Sunday, April 20, 2003. He was born in Richlands, Virginia and had lived most of his life in Washington County, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ollie and Beatrice O’Quinn. Scotty was an avid race fan and a supporter of his nephew, Danny O’Quinn, Jr. in the USAR Southern Division. Opal D. Caudill
Mrs. Opal "Eilleene" Dean Caudill, 77, went to be with the Lord on April 22, 2003, at the home of her daughter, Rita Caudill Rutledge and son-in-law, Richard Rutledge in Front Royal, Va. Eilleene was born Dec. 9, 1925, in McDowell County, W.Va., to the late Samuel Isaiah Dean and Sadie Ethel Lambert. She was the widow of Silvon Caudill. She was also preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry "Floyd" Lambert and Mary Jane Hamilton Lambert and William Harrison Dean and Mary "Ellen" Graham Dean; one son, Silvon "Dean" Caudill; a sister, Kathleen Dean Collins; and brothers, Paul Dean and Harold Dean. Eilleene and her family moved to the Wyndale Community in 1956 from McDowell County, W.Va. She was a member of the Wyndale United Methodist Church. Eilleene was loved by all that knew her and she will be dearly missed. Ida Boyd Cahill
ABINGDON -- Mrs. Ida "Bish" Boyd Cahill, 88, died Friday, April 25, 2003, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. She was born on January 27, 1915, at Plasterco, Virginia, the daughter of Leondus Hagy Boyd and Ida Montgomery Boyd. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1966; two sisters, Mollie Davidson and Alice Colley; and three brothers, William Boyd, Floyd (Bud) Boyd and Lon Boyd. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Janet Cahill of Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren, Maria Suglio, Donald Cahill, II, and Matthew Cahill, all of Dayton, Ohio, and John Cahill or Columbus, Ohio; three great-great grandchildren, Jordan Cahill, Nicolas and Isabella Suglio. The funeral service will be conducted Friday, May 2, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel, 427 East Main Street, with the Reverend Bill Cahill, the Reverend Sharon Wiley, and Dr. Eva Boyd Evans officiating. Robert C. McCrady
Mr. Robert Clarence (R.C.) McCrady, 84, of Abingdon died Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Washington County, Mr. McCrady was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of the 30th Infantry Division in Germany. He attained the rank of Sergeant. He received the Purple Heart having been injured in the Battle of the Buldge. Mr. McCrady attended Temple Baptist Church. He owned and operated several restaurants in Washing ton County, including R.C.'s Restaurant, The Tourist Inn and The Copper Kettle. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Gladys Josephine Mallonee and one brother, Jack McCrady, Jr. Survivors include his son, Bob McCrady and wife Peggy of Bluff City, TN; one granddaughter, Melissa Lindley and husband Chris of Albertville, AL; twin great granddaughters, Katelyn and Haley Lindley; several nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service will be held Friday, May 2, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Rev John Wesley Price will officiate. Graveside rites will be given by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post #6975. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Farris Funeral Service, 427 East Main Street. Ruby Thayer Price
Mrs. Ruby Thayer Price of Abingdon died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. Mrs. Price was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was the daughter of James E. Thayer, Sr. and Mary Sue Thayer. She was retired from Elliott Insurance Agency with 46 years of service. She was an active member of Washington Chapel United Methodist Church. She served in various offices of the church and in various district offices. She was a member of United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bill Greer; her second husband, Epperson "Doc" Price; her parents, one brother, Hunter H. Thayer, and one sister, Helen Thayer. Survivors include one brother, James E. "Buzz" Thayer of Abingdon; three sisters, Susie T. Blevins of Abingdon, Anna Belle Call of Glade Spring and Peggy T. Arnold of Kingsport, TN; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 2, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum. Rev. Mark McFadden and Rev. Darrell Ray will officiate. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the mausoleum. Jane Carolyn Reynolds Hearl
Jane Carolyn Reynolds Hearl, age 50, of 18316 Brumley Gap Road, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2003. She was born June 15, 1952 in Washington County, Virginia, the daughter of James and Dixie Reynolds of Abingdon, Virginia. She and her family made their home in the Brumley Gap Community. She was a member of the Barnes Chapel Church for 13 years where her husband serves as Pastor. She was a devoted Christian who enjoyed singing and loved going to church. Known for her sweet, gentle and kind nature, she touched the lives of everyone that came in contact with her. By being a compassionate person, she had a word of encouragement for everyone. Even during her illness, she was thinking of the needs of other people. Jane was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and daughter-in-law. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends she left behind. In addition to her parents other survivors include, Her loving husband of 29 years, Rev. Roger Lee Hearl; a daughter, Melissa H. Lee and special son-in-law, Chris of Abingdon ; two sons, Roger Hearl, Jr. and special daughter-in-law, Cari of Meadowview, Va. and David Hearl of the home; her pride and joy grandson, Kyle Preston Hearl; one sister, Karen R. Wimmer and husband, Wayne of Bristol, Va.; two brothers, Gary Reynolds and Larry G. Reynolds and wife, Patty all of Abingdon, Va.; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Cora Hearl of Abingdon, Va.; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted Friday, May 2, 2003 at 8:00 PM in the Greendale Chapel with Rev. Tracy Puckett, Rev. Ronnie Matney and Rev. Lyons Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 PM Friday at the church or anytime at the home of Jane’s parents, James and Dixie Reynolds, 12025 Porterfield Highway, Abingdon, Virginia. A committal service will be conducted Saturday at 11:00 AM in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Family and friends are ask to meet at the funeral home Saturday by 10:30 AM for a procession to the cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dr. Forrest Swan, the Cancer Outreach Associates and the entire fifth floor of Johnston Memorial Hospital. Also, Donna Kestner and Rick Wright for all their wonderful loving care and kindness and a special friend and caregiver, Virginia Williams, Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Webb and Paul Scyphers for the endless cards of encouragement. Our family will never forget the kindness shown to us by our many friends, family, churches, and neighbors in the community that touched our hearts with their visits, hundreds of cards and phone calls, food and most of all for the many prayers. Pallbearers will be Michael Mitchell, Wade Nunley, Johnny Salyers, Don Fields, Johnny Roark, James Williams, Dayton Harmon and Horton Kestner. Honorary pallbearers will Dr. Forrest Swan, Men of Barnes Chapel Church, Silas Dameron, Clifton Duncan, Wayne Wimmer, Randy Hearl, Allen Hearl, Michael Hearl, Jimmy Hearl, Kenneth Widener, Earn Hicks, Raymond Webb and Everett Cox . Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Outreach Foundation, Inc. 206 Abingdon Place, Abingdon, VA 24211.
