TANNERSVILLE, Va. - Mary Evelyn Taylor, 53, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a well-known cook in the Saltville area restaurants.
Survivors: two brothers, George Taylor, Tannersville, Va., and J.C. Taylor, Tannersville; one sister, Naomia Collins, Marion; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov.1, 2002, at Henderson Funeral Chapel with Rev. Elmer Cardwell officiating. Interment will follow at Crabtree Cemetery. Pallbearers will be George Taylor Jr., Chuck Phibbs, Darrell Rose, Gene Rose, Brandon Phibbs, Steven Phibbs and Jamie Hayes. Honorary pallbearer will be Sammy Taylor. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. Thursday evening.

Mary P. Tuck
BIG STONE GAP - Visitation for Mary Louise Tuck will be at the Roy A. Green Funeral Home in Appalachia from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday and a memorial service will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Big Stone Gap with Rev. Wayne Artrip, Rev. Bob Cornwell and Rev. Glen Linthicum officiating.
She dedicated her life to service and her body for medical research at the Quillen School of Medicine so others may experience a better life. Her remains will be buried icon with her husband at the National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn.
Mrs. Tuck, 82, Route 1, 1845D Egan Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at her home after an extended bout with cancer.

Funeral services for Billy Ray White will be conducted at noon Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Williams officiating. Burial will follow in East Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers: Gary Dishner, Bobby Shifflett, Chuck White, Rick White, Darron Hicks and Tony White.
Mr. White, 56, 2022 Highway 126, Elmcrest Lot 14, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his home.

George Johnstone Wilson
George Johnstone Wilson, 67, of Bristol Tennessee, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a lifelong resident of Bristol Tennessee. He worked as a brick mason and was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.
Mr. Wilson is survived by his daughter, Teresa Wilson Lane of Bristol Tennessee; five sons, Larry Wilson of Tampa, Fla., Paul Wilson of Bristol Tennessee, and Donald Wilson and George Wilson Jr., also of Tampa, and Lee Smith of Bristol Tennessee; and two brothers, Doug and James Wilson, both of Bristol Tennessee.
The funeral service will be conducted at the graveside at 10 o'clock Friday morning, Nov. 1, in East Hill Cemetery, Bristol, with Rev. Gary Garland officiating.

Kara Allen
KEEN MOUNTAIN, Va. - Mr. Kara Allen, 87, of Golden Age Retirement Home, formerly of Keen Mountain, passed away Jan. 21, 2003, in a Buchanan County Hospital following an unexpected illness. Born in War Eagle, W.Va., he was the son of the late Lewis and Elzora Cook Allen. He was a retired coal miner. Mr. Allen was a member of Oakwood Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a first wife; his second wife, Edna Sarah Looney Allen; son, Benny Allen; five brothers, Mack, Doc, Alfred, Joe and Tom Allen; sisters Virgie, Elizabeth, Phoebe and Virginia Allen; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Elizabeth Matney.
Survivors are one son, Joe Allen of Petersburg, Va.; five daughters, Claudette Stiltner McDonald of Thomaston, Ga., Jeanette Stiltner Johnson of Statham, Ga., Christinia Allen Matney of Herndon, Va., Becky Allen Hill of Houston, Texas, and Tracy Allen Laws (adopted) of Green Mountain, N.C.; one brother, Ed Allen of Palm Bay, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren ; and special friend, Ruby Viers.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Buchanan Funeral Chapel in Keen Mountain, with Rev. Curtis Stacy officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill. Pallbearers will be Joe Allen, Daniel Allen, Brandon Allen, Joel Saunders, Joe Matney and Jerry McDonald. Honorary pallbearers will be Keith Brewer, Sammy Johnson, James Johnson and Ed Allen.

COEBURN - Gary Neal Austin, 47, died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at home.
He was a lifelong resident of Wise County, the son of the late Robert Joseph and Garnell Kiser Austin. He was a graduate of St. Paul High School, an employee of Coastal Coal Co. and a member of First Baptist Church, St. Paul.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Austin; one son, Evan Austin of the home; one sister, Beverly Bean of Virginia Beach; one brother, Larry Austin of Winterville, N.C.; one uncle, Dave Austin of St. Paul; two aunts, Betty Austin of St. Paul and Janie Dixon of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel in Castlewood, Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Moore officiating. Committal services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. The family will meet at the funeral home and go in procession to the Cemetery, leaving at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Thomas M. Bailey
COLUMBUS, Ind. - Rev. Thomas M. Bailey, 65, of Bonaventure Drive died at 7:25 a.m. Jan. 21, 2003, at home.
Born in Lexington, Va., he was the son of the late Gene S. Bailey and Rachel Rice Bailey. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Shelton.
Thomas gradauted from Bristol Virginia High School. He graduated from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., with a bachelor of science degree, then a master of divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as pastor of Whitaker Baptist Church in Paragon, Ind., Big Walnut Baptist Church in Reelsville, Ind., and First Baptist Church in Boonville, Ind. He served as interim pastor of First Baptist Church in Anderson, Ind. Thomas retired from First Baptist Church in Moline, Ill., and was elected pastor emeritus.
He married Janet L. Turner on June 2, 1961. He was an Air Force veteran and a member of First Baptist Church in Columbus.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons Dr. Brian K. Bailey of Boone, N.C., and Kevin T. (Debra) Bailey of Anderson; daughter, Karla J. Bailey and her partner, Ali Hawker, of London, England; brother Gene S. (Nancy) Bailey of Lexington; and sister Elizabeth (Claude) Wood of Bristol Tennessee.
Two services are planned, the first will be held Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church located in Columbus; and the second service will be held Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Moline, located at 1901 29th St., Moline, IL 61265. Rev. Jon Carlstrom, Dr. Brian Nelson, Rev. Dale Cole and Rev. Brian Hastings will officiate.

Kathleen D. Baker
CLEVELAND - Kathleen Darter Baker, 88, died Wednesday morning in a local hospital. Mrs. Baker was the daughter of the late Eva Faust Darter and O. Lloyd Darter. Her husband, Mr. John L.Baker, also preceded her in death. Mrs. Baker graduated from King College in Bristol Tennessee. She was a retired teacher with more than 40 years of service, serving in the Bristol Tennessee Public School System and the Orlando, Fla., Public School System. Mrs. Baker was very active in the Retired Classroom Teachers Association and the American Association of University Women. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church in Orlando.
Survivors include her daughter, Patty Puckett and her husband, Judge Larry Puckett, of Cleveland; her son, Kenneth J. Baker and his wife, Gwendolyn Baker, of Chattanooga; her grandchildren, Andy Puckett, Anna Puckett and Elizabeth Puckett, all of Cleveland, and David Baker, Michelle Baker and Catherine Baker, all of Chattanooga; her brother, Lloyd Darter Jr. of Durham, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. from Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Ivanhoe Avenue Chapel in Orlando. Interment will be held Monday morning at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Orlando. The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Sunday at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Ivanhoe Avenue Chapel. ABINGDON - Mr. Richard Dean Ball, 67, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at Grace Health Care Center in Abingdon.
He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late Elmer Ball and Gladys Wright Ball. Mr. Ball was a retired farmer and a former employee of Abingdon Milling. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Nunley Ball; and a brother, Bobby Ball.
He is survived by a son, Richard David Ball of Abingdon; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Spriggs and Mrs. John (Sara) Denton, all of Abingdon; two brothers, Hunter Ball of Bristol Virginia and Andy Ball of Hopewell, Va.; and five grandchildren, Susan Frye, Bobby Spriggs, Reva Spriggs, Angela Spriggs and Lilly Spriggs.

R.C. Collins
ABINGDON - The Reverend R.C. Collins, 91, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at his residence.
Reverend Collins was the pastor of several Churches of God including Abingdon, Lebanon, Blackstone, Dunfordtown, Shorts Creek and the Damascus Community Church. He was instrumental in the building of Trigg Street Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel L. Collins.
Survivors include a son, Emory C. Collins of Salem,Va.; four daughters, Rachel Sampson of Kent's Store, Va., Rosa L. Walters of Salem and Ellen F. Thomas and Tilda M. Osborne, both of Abingdon; two brothers, Reverend Tom Collins of Bastroup, La., and Reverend I.C. Collins of War W.Va.; two sisters, Blanche Dove of Carrolleton,Va., and Sadie Nester of Salem; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. in Trigg Street Church of God with Reverend Ronald King and Rev. James Beaver officiating.
Interment will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

Donald W. Crouse
CEDAR BLUFF - Mr. Donald W. Crouse, 67, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, in a Richlands hospital following a short illness. Born in Canebrake, W.Va., he was the son of the late Walter F. and Beatrice Childress Crouse. Mr. Crouse was a retired coal miner for Bishop Coal Co. He was a member of the Bishop 6025 Union of the United Mine Workers of America. He was of the Protestant faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Roy Lee Crouse.
Survivors are his wife of 50 years, Frances Whitt Crouse; daughter, Karen Davis and husband, David, of Cedar Bluff; son, Larry Crouse and wife, Karla, of Cedar Bluff; sister, Helen Adams of North Carolina; and seven grandchildren, Kristen Williby, Jonah Crouse, Bridgett Davis, Samantha Crouse, Amanda Slaughter, Kimberly Slaughter and Jeffrey Crouse.

Hazel M. Ferguson
HONAKER - Mrs. Hazel Marie Ferguson, 88, passed away Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at home. Born Aug. 25, 1914, in the Lewis Creek section of Honaker, she was a daughter of the late Henderson and Belle Taylor Thompson. A lifelong resident of the Honaker area, she was a graduate of Honaker High School. She was a longtime member of Honaker First United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Ferguson; one sister, Mamie Thompson; one infant sister; and one brother, Kyle Thompson.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Shirley Ferguson of Scott Depot, W.Va., and Charles and Judy Ferguson of Honaker; three grandchildren, Sandy Donaldson, Darrell Ferguson and Andrea Ferguson; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Michael Ward officiating. Entombment will follow in Ketron Memorial Mausoleum at Lebanon.

Vera V. Ferguson
PRINCETON, W.Va. - Vera Vivian Ferguson, 86, of 204 Low Gap Road died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2003, at St. Luke's Hosptial in Bluefield, W.Va. Born in Meban, W.Va., Sept. 4, 1916, she was the daughter of the late George Edward and Lucinda Rosy Elizabeth Motley Combs. Mrs. Ferguson was the owner and operator of Elite Beauty Shop on Mercer Street in Princeton for 30 years. She previously owned and operated the House of Beauty in Beckley. She was educated in Mercer County, W.Va., schools and attended Little French Beauty Academy in Bluefield, W.Va. She was a graduate of Virginia Ferrells Hair Styling Academy in Detroit. She was a 30-year member of the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association, where she served twice as president and once as the state representative. She had been an active member of Quota International of Princeton Inc., since 1973. She was a member of the board of directors for Southern Highlands Mental Health for 20 years and served 15 of those years as secretary-treasurer. She had been appointed by the City of Princeton to serve on the Zoning Board of Appeals. She was the 1998 Belle of Princeton Summerfest. Mrs. Ferguson was a lifelong member of Kee Street United Methodist Church in Princeton where her father helped in the construction of the church. She served on the church Board of Directors and was the co-chair of Mark's Place. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick Haskell Ferguson; and two brothers, Fred Combs and Ira Combs. Survivors include two sons, Fredrick H. Ferguson and his wife, Lisa, of Raleigh, N.C., and Benjamin F. Ferguson and his wife, Cindy, of Marion; two grandsons, Benjamin Ferguson of Norfolk and Craig Ferguson and his wife, Michele, of Goochland, Va.; two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Jonathan Ferguson; two sisters-in-law, Neva Combs of Charleston and Chippy Ferguson of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at George W. Seaver Chapel of Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton with Rev. Greg Godwin officiating. CHILHOWIE - Geneva Wyatt Halsey, 75, died Thursday in Lakeland, Fla.

MARION - Mrs. Pauline Sheets Hopkins, 81, died Wednesday at her residence in Marion.
She was born in Ashe County, N.C., to the late Baxter and Ada Sheets and was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Hopkins; her son, Randy Hopkins; two brothers, Cliff and Denver Sheets; and one sister, Blanche Flowers. She was retired from Southwestern Virginia State Hospital as a registered nurse and worked at Smyth County Community Hospital as a pink lady. She was a member of Freedom Tabernacle Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Lillian Reeves of Laurel Spring, N.C., Shelia Degroat of Arvada, Colo., and Jo Bolt of Middle River, Md.; one brother, Bobby Sheets of Laurel Spring; one granddaughter, Michelle Rogers Hayden of Atkins; two great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Hunter Hayden; daughter-in-law, Judy Hopkins of Marion; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Rev. Mike Sage officiating. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial donations can be made to Freedom Tabernacle, Freedom Tabernacle Lane, Atkins, VA 24311. Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the Hopkins family.

Mildred L. Ingle
WISE - Mildred L. Ingle, 63, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at her home in Lakeland, Fla.
She was employed as a CNA with Columbia Hospital, Bartow, Fla., and was of the Pentecostal Church of God faith.
Surviving are her husband, William D. Moore of Lakeland; one son, Bobby Wayne Moore of Coeburn; five daughters, Janice Moroe of Stuart, Va., Nancy Willis of Appalachia, Va., Debbie Estes of Coeburn and Patty Lambert and Christy Joseph, both of Norton; four brothers, Hubert Calhoun of Chicago, Leon Calhoun of Duffield, Kenny Calhoun of Wise and Tommy Calhoun of Auburndale, Fla.; two sisters, Louise Stidham of Wise and Betty Guibard of Elk Grove, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Wise, with Rev. Jimmy R. Stidham officiating. Burial will follow in the Calhoun Cemetery, Wise. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Friday at Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise.
Sturgill Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
