Justin Ernest Hamby
ABINGDON - Justin Ernest Hamby, 19, of the Bethel community, died Saturday, Sept. 28 , 2002. He was a native of Abingdon and was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria Loretta Hamby, who died on June 1, 2002; and his grandfathers, Ernest Hicks and William Hamby. Justin attended Rhea Valley Elementary School, Damascus Middle School, Holston High School and graduated from Grundy High School in 2001. He was attending Virginia Highlands Community College in Abingdon.
He is survived by his father, Ben Hamby; two brothers, Ben (Chip) Hamby Jr. of Grundy and Jason Hamby of Hartford, Conn.; two sisters, April Hamby of Okinawa, Japan, and Kristie Hamby-Lewis and husband Charles Lewis and nephew Josh Hamby-Bohannon of Marietta, Ga.; his maternal grandparents, Maggie and William Lindsay of Statesville, N.C.; and paternal grandmother, Nellie Hamby of Rich Creek, Va.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills with the Rev. Don Lasley and David Matlock officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at the mausoleum prior to the service.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Damascus Rescue Squad, 32094 Government Road, Damascus, VA 24236.

Alden L. Henderson
CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Mr. Alden L. Henderson, 73, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at his home. He was born and raised in Washington County and was the son of the late Bradley and Willie Findley Henderson. He was a retired sergeant first class in the U.S. Army having served 26 years. He served during the Korean conflict and Vietnam War.
He is survived by his wife, Teresa Hitinger Henderson of Clarksville; two brothers, Ray Findley Henderson of Layton, Utah, and Jack L. Henderson of Blacksburg, S.C.; two sisters, Elizabeth "Libby" Henderson Johnson of Norwalk, Calif., and Margaret H. Griffith of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel. Military rites will be held immediately following the service in the Knollkreg Memorial Park by the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Color Honor Guard. The family will receive friends following the service at the home of Margaret H. Griffith. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Color Honor Guard, c/o Larry Hileman, 10452 Goose Creek Road, Bristol, VA 24202.

Dorothy S. Hollomon
BLOUNTVILLE --Funeral services for Dorothy S. "Dot" Hollomon will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at the Calvary Baptist Church, 1505 Broad St., Bristol, Tenn., with the Reverends Tony Trunnell and Dan Theiben officiating. Burial will follow in the Tri-Cities Memory Gardens, Blountville. Pallbearers include: Bob Dishner, Dickie Warren, Jerry Bacon, Rusty Scott, Stacy Whitaker, Bob Malone, Jim Mink and John Rankins. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Stephen Hanor, Dr. Terry Forrest and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 1505 Broad St., Bristol, TN 37620 or Sullivan Central High School, 131 Shipley Ferry Road, Blountville, TN 37617.
Mrs. Hollomon, 63, of 219 Oak Place, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Wellmont Hospice House.

Perry Woodrow Horton
RICHLANDS - Mr. Perry Woodrow Horton, 79, went to his heavenly home Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at Clinch Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Richlands on Feb. 15, 1923, he was the son of the late Valentine (Tine) and Naoma Lowe Horton. He was an avid gardener, wood craftsman and loved the outdoors. He was a member of the Clearview United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers; and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia (Lucile) Salyer Horton; one son, Ron Horton and wife Betty of Cedar Bluff; two daughters, Carol Messick of Raven, Va., and Nancy Horton Hess and husband Doug of Tazewell, Va.; one sister, Ella Meadows of Baltimore; six grandchildren, Lee Messick, Elaine Messick Byrd, Kelly Messick, Heather Messick Casey, Nikki Hess Grepiotis and Christy Horton; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor Leigh Messick and Hunter James Grepiotis.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Pastor Paul Griffith, Rev. Carl Robinson, Rev. Ralph Horton and Rev. Phillip Horton officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Lee Messick, Kelly Messick, William Byrd, Brian Casey, Mike Grepiotis and Jeff Shelton. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Osborne, Jack Pyott, Ernie Horton, Kenneth (Mouse) Boyd, Angela Harrison, Steve Miller, Robert (Bob) Horton, Jovan (Joe) Horton and members of the Clearview United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clearview United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 642, Doran, VA 24612.
The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday.

Scott Paul Miller
MEADOWVIEW - Mr. Scott Paul Miller, 93, passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a retired farmer, was a Methodist and was preceded in death by a daughter, Frieda Snapp.
Survivors include his wife, Marie McCracken Miller; a daughter, Regina Baker, Newport, Ky.; sisters, Lenna Atwell and Mary Atwell, both of Abingdon; four grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at 4 p.m. at the graveside in Knollkreg Memorial Park with Rev. Jerry Eggers officiating.
Pallbearers will be James Miller, Bill Delp, John Atwell, Eddie Counts, Kenneth Morrison and Claude Counts Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy Scott, Wayne Morrison, Doug McCracken, Bobby Arnold and Charlie Arnold.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Meadowview Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 84, Meadowview, VA 24361.

JOHNSON CITY - The funeral service for Cathy J. Ottinger, 50, 1111 Miller St., Johnson City, who died Saturday, Will be conducted 8 p.m. Tuesday from the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Paull Dixon will officiate. Burial will follow the committal service 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Eden Cemetery. Friends are asked to meet the family at Morris-Baker by 9:20 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery. Family members will serve as pallbearers. Nelson Jr., both of Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Wanda Miller, Granite Falls, N.C., and Pat Cunningham, Indianapolis; her aunt, Gladys Russell, Bristol Tennessee; her uncle, H.L. Trivett, Bristol Virginia; her grandson, Isaac Ray Johnson, Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews. Condolences may be sent to the family via www.morrisbaker.com. Hazel D. Pippin
ABINGDON - Funeral services for Hazel Dye Pippin will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Campbell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in Knollkreg Memorial Park. Friends and family are requested to meet at the cemetery for the graveside service. The family will receive friends at Campbell Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday.

HONAKER - Mildred Ann Sargent, 69, passed away Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, at her home.

Helen A. Stevens
ABINGDON - Maj. Helen Aldene Stevens, U.S. Air Force (retired), 76, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in National Healthcare of Johnson City.
Helen was a native of Washington County, Va., born Aug. 11, 1926, to Thomas L. and Mary Counts Stevens. She was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church and retired from the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include sisters, Anne Stevens Sparks, Johnson City, and Ruby Stevens Brown, Bristol Virginia; an aunt, Mildred Clark, Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Full military honors will be given by the Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Color Guard.
There will be no visitation in the funeral home. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery.

Brady Sutherland
DORAN, Va. - Mr. Brady Sutherland, 83, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a short illness. Born in Dickenson County, Va., he was the son of the late Wade and Nannie Sutherland. He was a World War II Navy veteran where he served as a gunner. He was a member of the Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V. He was of the Baptist faith and attended the Shiloh Primitive Church in Abingdon. He was a retired coal miner after working 43 years with Island Creek Coal Co. and Pittston Coal.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Sutherland and Eli Sutherland; and two sisters, Helen Owens and Zella Freedman.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lucy McClanahan Mitchell Sutherland; one daughter, Janet Carol Rye and husband J.B. of Interlachen, Fla.; two sons, Larry Wayne Sutherland and wife Carol of Coeburn and Randy Mitchell and wife Pam of Richlands; one stepson, James L. Mitchell and wife Rita of Cedar Bluff; two stepdaughters, Maye McGlothlin and husband Darrell and Martha M. Boyd, all of Richlands; three brothers, Woodrow Sutherland of Abingdon and Boone Sutherland and Fonso Sutherland, both of Haysi, Va.; two sisters, Gladys Sutherland of Haysi and Jacqueline (Jackie) Keene of Oakwood, Va.; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Carl Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V. Ronnie D. Teasley
WISE - Ronnie Darrell Teasley, 55, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Norton. He was a lifelong resident of Wise County, Va., and was a former coal miner.
He was a son of the late Charles and Martha Thacker Teasley and was also preceded in death by two sisters, Martha Brummitte and Charlene Teasley; and two brothers, David Teasley and Charles Teasley Jr.
Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Wilma Teasley, Wise; four daughters, Diana Stanley, Stella Teasley and Rolanda Stapleton, all of Wise, and Martha Mills, Virginia Beach, Va.; two sons, Ronnie D. Teasley II and Tyler Austin Teasley, both of Wise; six grandchildren, William "Amos" Stanley, Samuel Stanley, McKenzie Teasley, Elmer Stapleton III and Tia Stapleton, all of Wise, and Janet Milus of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Rose Younce, Wise, and Christine Ruff, Thaxton, Va.; one brother, Dickie Teasley, Wise; a half-sister, Anna Sue Greene, Norton; a half-brother, Elmer Ray Thacker, Norton; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, in Carty Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. G.T. Greene officiating. Interment will be in White Oak Gap Cemetery. Pallbearers will be friends and family. Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Wiley Thomas
ABINGDON - Mr. Wiley Thomas, 80, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Smyth and Washington Counties. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maelee Doss Thomas; and a son, Glen Thomas.
He is survived by three sons, C.J. Thomas of Damascus, Marvin Thomas of Glade Spring and David Thomas of Damascus; five daughters, Hazel Thomas of Bristol Tennessee, Minnie Nichols of Abingdon, Janice Witt of Bristol Virginia, Martha Stanley of Damascus and Betsy Thomas of Abingdon; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at 3:30 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Tim Norris and Preston Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Leland E. Umbarger
ABINGDON - Mr. Leland Edgar Umbarger, 85, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Bland County, Va., and lived most of his life in Washington County, Va. He attended the Shady Grove Pentecostal Church.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Virginia Cole Umbarger; three sons, Ray Umbarger, Ronnie H. Umbarger and Glen Umbarger, all of Abingdon; three daughters, Linda F. Rutledge and Connie S. Umbarger, both of Abingdon, and Nancy J. White of Meadowview; six grandchildren, Randy Rutledge of Abingdon, Angie Rutledge of Maryland, Cheryl McLeod of Richmond, Rick Umbarger of Abingdon, Steven White of Chesapeake, Va., and Chasity Umbarger of Abingdon; four great-grandchildren, Randall Rutledge Jr. and Danial Rutledge, both of Abingdon and Madelyne White and Julia White, both of Chesapeake.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at 7 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Garry Cole and Rev. Noah Stout officiating. A committal service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends following the service on Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Wey McLeod, Randy Rutledge, Rick Umbarger, Steven White, John Rutledge and Johnny White. Family and friends are to assemble at the funeral home by 10:35 a.m. Wednesday for a procession to the cemetery.

CHILHOWIE - Mary Smith Blevins, 78, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at home.
She is survived by her husband, Joe S. Blevins; two sisters, Shirley Noell of Tennessee and Betty Joe Prosser of Indianapolis; one grandson, Jason Blevins; and one daughter-in-law, Joyce Doane Blevins,
She was preceded in death by one son, Bobby Joe Blevins; and one grandson, Brian W. Blevins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Cleghorn Baptist Church with the Revs. Wesley G. Eller, Charles E. Blevins and Bob Steele officiating. Burial will be in Old Cleghorn Cemetery.

Clara R. Dunham
BLUFF CITY - Clara Ruth Dunham, 66, of 109 Meadowlark Lane, Apartment 12, and formerly of 1234 Shelby St., Bristol, Tenn., died Thursday, June 6, 2002, at Johnson City Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Hyder and Margaret Hensley Widner, and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area.
Survivors include her daughter, Patsy Hayden; stepchildren Jane Pinkard and Richard Dunham Jr.; grandchildren, Darryl Hayden and fiancee, Kendra Purcell; step-grandson, Tony Pinkard; step-granddaughter, April Pinkard; nephew, Hyder Bailey; grand-nephew, Alex Bailey; and very special friend, Richard Dunham.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 6 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Tri-State Baptist Childrens Home, P.O. Box 888, Bristol, TN 37620.

Henry S. Holmes
MEADOWVIEW - A graveside service for Henry S. Holmes will be conducted Saturday, June 8, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Bishop-Rush Creek Cemetery with Rev. Howard Leonard officiating. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday night at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Michael Hicks, Randall McCracken, Derek Holmes, Bob Mann, Pete Henry and Gary Wilson.
Mr. Holmes, 74, passed away Wednsday, June 5, 2002, in Avante Nursing Home in Roanoke after a brief illness.
Farris Funeral Service is serving the family of Mr. Holmes.
