Joe P. Miller
NORTON - Joe P. Miller, 74, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap, Va.
He was manager of Hilltop Trailer Court from 1977 until his death.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War with rank of sergeant. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and United Nations Service Medal. He was preceded in death by a son, Ricky Miller.
He is survived by wife, Patricia "Trish" (Frye) Miller, Norton; sons, Joseph Miller and Randy Miller and wife Valeria, all of Norton; daughter, Debbie Sproles, Elkins, Ark.; three grandchildren, Crystal Miller, Angela Sproles Keller and husband Cody and Bobbi Jo Miller; two great-grandchildren, Caylon and Austin; sisters, Virginia Hash and Frances Bates, both of Norton; brother, Junior Hamilton, Norton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends mourn the loss.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Hagy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robbie Fultz and Mr. Larry Adams officiating. Burial will be in Laurel Grove Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Norton VFW Post 4301 and Wise DAV Chapter 56. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mary F. Mobley
IRVINE, Ky. - Mary F. Mobley, 61, of 117 Lily Ave., went to be with the Lord Tuesday, July 30, 2002, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton. Tenn.
Mary was born April 29, 1941, in Elizabethton, a daughter of the late Roy and Pearlie (Hurley) Williams. She was a member of the Bethel Christian Church where she was a dedicated worker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ollie and Sylvester Williams; and two sisters, Nan Nidiffer and Lillian Combs.
Mary is survived by her husband, Minister Ned Mobley of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Susan and Danny Birch and Teresa Mobley, all of Kentucky; grandson, Timothy Mobley of Kentucky; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mrs. Orlin (Mae) Humphrey and Mrs. Ralph (Gay) Penix, all of Piney Flats, Tenn., and Gertrude Cox of Elizabethton; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim Williams, Walter and Freda Williams and Dean and Judy Williams, all of Elizabethton, and Billy Williams of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Blountville Christian Church. Funeral service will be 8 p.m. in the Blountville Christian Church with Minister Roy Farrow, Minister Leland Houser and a son-in-law, Danny Birch officiating. Family and friends will meet for a graveside service 10 a.m. Friday in the Blountville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Orlin Humphrey, Gaithor Humphrey, Ralph Penix, Danny Birch, David Clem and Billy Groseclose. Honorary pallbearer: John Diamond, Roger Richardson, Floyd Land and Aaron Humphrey.

Mary Alice Mullins
GRUNDY - Mary Alice Stacy Mullins, 54 years of age, of the Slate Creek section, passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at her sister's residence in Tazewell, Va. Born in Buchanan County, June 15, 1948, the daughter of the late Ersel Stacy and Matilda Smith Stacy. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, was of the Baptist faith, had attended Southwest Virginia Community College and was an employee of Dotson's Drive-In. She was a loving mother.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael Mullins; one brother, Randall Stacy; and one nephew, Russell Todd White.
She is survived by her ex-husband, Mick Mullins of Grundy; one son, Mic Darrell Mullins Jr. of Blacksburg, Va.; two sisters, Deloris Ward and husband Avon of North Tazewell, Va., and Sharon Barton and husband Gearld of Clinchco, Va.; and one brother, William Stacy and wife Rebecca of Pounding Mill, Va.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Don Stacy and Reverend Danny Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Branch Cemetery at Grundy.
Active pallbearers will be Jerry Stiltner, Adam Stiltner, Ron Stacy, Don Stacy, Mark Stacy, David Stacy, Rob Belcher, John Dotson and Bobby Daughter. Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Ward, Karen Ward, Christopher Ward, Sean Dardeau, Karen Dardeau, Shannon Stacy, Mike Coleman, Stephanie Coleman, Kelli Stiltner, Dale Stiltner and Vernice Mullins.

Nickolas Mullins
Nickolas Mullins, 72, of 100 Beaver St., Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at his home. He was born March 3, 1930, in Sneedville, Tenn., a son of the late Brownlow and Maude Collins Mullins. Mr. Mullins had lived in Marion, Va.,. before moving to Bristol where he has made his home for the past 16 years. He was self-employed and a member of True Faith Tabernacle.
Survivors include his wife, Geneva Grubb Mullins; daughters, Carri Mullins and Carol Robara; stepdaughters, Judy Stone and Bonnie Smith; stepsons, David Grubb, Buddy Grubb, Bobby Grubb and Jerry Grubb; sisters, Mary Johnson, Nancy Green and Mazeley Johnson; brother, Williard Mullins; grandchildren, Timothy Robara, Brandon Russell and Chalette Cress; 17 step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at 3:30 p.m. at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Jess Neal officiating. Pallbearers will be Clarence, Fred, Jerry, Bobby, Buddy and David. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to Weaver Funeral Home, 630 Locust St., Bristol, TN 37620. A procession of family and friends will leave the funeral home at 3:15 p.m. to go to the cemetery.

Bessie Eller Owens
GLADE SPRING - The funeral service for Mrs. Bessie Eller Owens will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at the graveside in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring with Rev. Tom Sullivan officiating. Casketbearers will be the following family members: Tony Owens, Jason Mitchell, Dayton Owens, Darius Bowman, Keith Bowman and Eddie Thomas Jr. Those attending the funeral service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:50 a.m. The family will receive friends any time at the home of her daughter, Sue Thomas, 331 Mesa Drive, Glade Spring. There will be no viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
Mrs. Owens, 91, died Monday, July 29, 2002, in the Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.

Maudie Wright Roberts
PETERSBURG, Va. - Mrs. Maudie Wright Roberts, 86, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at the Battlefield Convalescent Center in Petersburg. She was a daughter of the late Samuel Clark and Meldie Newberry Clark, and was preceded in death by her husbands, Clifford Wright and Fred Roberts. Mrs. Roberts was also preceded in death by a son, Virgil Lee Wright.
She was a member of the Rebekka Club.
She is survived by her sons, A. Darell Wright of Elkton, Md., and Harry Eugene Wright of McKinney, Va.; a daughter, Vera Mae Wright Ozmar of Petersburg; a sister, Opal Hagy and husband Robert of Abingdon and Mavisdale, Va.; and multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Charlie Harmon officiating. Interment will follow in Grandview Memorial Park in Bluefield, Va. Grandsons will serve as casketbearers. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home or any time at the home of her grandson, Billy Rivers, 780 Colonial Road, Abingdon, Va. Nicholas Wade Rose
COEBURN - Nicholas Wade Rose, infant son of Wade and Kelly Rose, of Route 2, passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Gene Rose; paternal great-grandparents, Maston and Mary Rose; paternal great-grandfather, Bill Salyer; maternal great-grandparents, Talmadge and Leota Mullins and Cecil and June Fleming; and maternal great-uncles, Robert Mullins, Danny Mack Fleming and Cecil Junior Fleming.
He is survived by his parents, Wade and Kelly Rose of Route 2; his sister, Allison Rose of the home; uncle, Ben Mullins of Knoxville; paternal grandmother, Carolyn Rose of Route 2, Coeburn; paternal great-grandmother, Agnes Salyer; paternal great-aunts, Ginger Senter and Christian Edwards; paternal great-uncles, Michael Rose and Greg Salyer of Coeburn; maternal great-aunts, Louzella Yates, Barbara Mullins, Clara Lovelace, Joetta Colley and Peggy Fleming; maternal great-uncles, Avery Mullins, Roger Lee Fleming, Gary Fleming, Michael Fleming and Ricky Fleming; and a host of friends.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, with clergyman Lester Mullins officiating at the Kennedy Family Cemetery, Route 2, Coeburn. Billy Ray Ayers
NORTON - Billy Ray Ayers, 70, died Thursday, July 11, 2002, at his residence in Norton. He retired from the U.S. Army with more than 20 years of service. He served during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis Morgan Ayers.
He is survived by five children in Germany; four stepdaughters, Judy Mefford of Mulberry, Fla., Cat Smith and Donna Cooper, both of Winter Haven, Fla., and Lois DeWolf of Siler City, N.C.; one stepson, Jimmy Ball of Winter Haven; and one sister, Mary Tate of Richmond, Ind.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton. Funeral Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel, with Gary Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the American Legion Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by NortonVFW Post 4301 and Wise DAV Chapter 56.

John R. Baumgardner
Graveside services for John R. Baumgardner will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, in Walnut Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Dan Birchfield officiating, assisted by Rev. Darrell Lambert. Harry Price and the deacons of Walnut Grove Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Baumgardner, 83, died at home July 10, 2002.

Edsel Belcher
BIG ROCK, Va. - Edsel Belcher, 79, of the Conaway section passed away Thursday, July 11, 2002, in Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. Born in Buchanan County on June 16, 1923, he was the son of the late John A. Belcher and Mary Janey Ramey Belcher. Mr. Belcher was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. He was a member of Little Freedom Old Regular Baptist Church and a retired heavy equipment operator, having last worked for Rapoca Energy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, an avid outdoorsman, loved horses and to fox and coon hunt.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Edsel Belcher Jr.; one sister, Alice Elswick; five brothers, Willie Belcher,Caudil Belcher, Lonnie Belcher,Roy Belcher and Claude Belcher.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mildred Slone Belcher of Big Rock; one daughter, Gleda Belcher Wilfong and husband, Steve, of Harrisonburg, Va.; two sisters, Carrie Lee of Big Rock and Ola Kaftan of Defuniak Springs, Fla.; one brother, Johnny (Buster) Belcher of Conaway; and five grandchildren, Melissa (Missy) Vencill and husband, James, of Blountville, Lisa Drumheller of Harrisonburg, Teresa (T.D.) Selfe of Virginia Beach, Cory Wilfong and wife, Laura, of Harrisonburg and Jeremy Wilfong and wife, April, of Tulsa, Okla. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 14, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel, Grundy, with Elders Elmer Church, Jerry Matney and Jackie Church officiating. Burial will follow in MountainValley Memorial Park, Big Rock.
Active pallbeaers will be family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Clint Sutherland, Fourth Floor and ICU nursing staff of Buchanan General Hospital.
The body will be left at the funeral home, where friends may call after 6 p.m. Saturday evening with services to be held at 7 p.m.
Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion and VFW Post 7360.

Nora B. Brewer
Nora Ethel Boardwine Brewer, 86, of the Jasper Creek community died Thursday at the home of her son, Jack Brewer, of Bristol Virgina. Mrs. Brewer was the daughter of the late William "Bill" and Maggie McGuire Boardwine. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Brewer was a very loving mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Brewer was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur S. Brewer; her son, Paul Brewer, her stepson, William Brewer; and two grandchildren.
Mrs. Brewer is survived by four sons, Jack Brewer and wife, Mary, Earl Brewer and wife, Diana, of Bristol Virginia, Ralph Brewer and wife, Karen, and Bobby Brewer and wife, Shirley, of Abingdon; two daughters-in-law, Bonnie Brewer of Radford and Faye Brewer of Bristol Virginia; two stepsons, James Brewer and wife, Ora, and Frazier Brewer and wife, Pat, of Bristol Virginia; one sister, Esther Hall of Bristol Tennessee; two brothers, Dennis Boardwine of Bristol Virginia and Walker Boardwine of Indiana; 11 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers Carl Young and Kenneth Widner officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. The family will reecive friends Saturday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at Weaver Funeral Home.

Funeral services for Earnest W. Caudill will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2002, in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Howard Campbell officiating. Lula Deel Church
BIRCHLEAF - Lula Church, 97, of the Rakes Ridge section died Friday, July 12, 2002, at the home of her daughter-in-law, Dora Church. A native of Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Margaret Owens Deel, and was the widow of Trigg Church. She had been a member of the Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church since May 1953. She was also preceded in death by sons Roy, Jack and Park Church; and daughters Vivian Owens and Jean Deel.
She is survived by a daughter, Pauline Chapman of Pulaski, Tenn.; a sister Lucy Hackney of Birchleaf; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Sunday, July 14, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Andy Deel, Mark Justice and Earl Dean Yates officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Family Cemetery at Birchleaf. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. on Saturday where an evening service will be held at 7 p.m.

Isabella K. Fields
MARION - Isabella Katherine Fields, infant daughter of Warren & Tonya Fields, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Robert S. Fields.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one sister, Savannah Fields of the home; maternal grandparents, Dexter and Kathy Sheets of Chilhowie; paternal grandmother, Violet Fields of Marion; and special aunts Courtney Sheets of Chilhowie, Teresa Monroe of Blountville, Donna Hutton of Marion and Charlynne Cassell of Marion.
Graveside services will be held at noon Saturday, July 13, 2002, from Roselawn Cemetery with Rev. David Neitch officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the Fields family.

Vernie A. Hess
BLUEFIELD, Va. - Mr. Vernie Albert "Tiny" Hess, 38, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2002, in Roncerverte, W.Va. Born July 30, 1963, in Tazewell County, Va., he was a son of Wanda M. Hess of Honaker and the late Vernie Alvin Hess. He was a member of the National Guard of Richlands and Abbs Valley Fire Department. He was employed as a truck driver for Rocky Road Logging in Tazewell. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by twin sisters, Nancy Gale Hess and Verna Dale Hess.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two sisters, Kathy and Bob Noe of Welch, W.Va., and Blanche Hess and her companion, Johnny, of Honaker; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James and Delores Hess and Charles and Brenda Hess, all of Swords Creek, Va.; three daughters, Sarah Hess, Sharon Hess and Deliah Hess, all of Bristol Virginia; two sons, Timothy Hess and Jermiah Hess, both of Bristol Virginia; a special companion, Stacy Shrader and her son, Chris, both of Pocahontas, Va.; and seven nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Sherman Lester and Rev. Peerman Lester officiating. Interment will follow in Richardson Cemetery at Stone Branch near Honaker.
Pallbearers will be Tracy Shrader, Ray Shrader, Randy Fuller, Curtis Barton, Steve Osborne and Anthony Deel.
Honorary pallbearers will members of Abbs Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

Donald Lee Kiser
BIRCHLEAF, Va. - Donald Lee Kiser, 75, of the Frying Pan Creek section died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Russell County Medical Center at Lebanon. Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Fred and Alta Smith Kiser. He had been a coal miner and was of the Baptist faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Julia Kiser, Bertie Counts and Viola Kiser.
He is survived by sisters Arlene Stevens of Birchleaf and Vadie Blankenship of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Sunday, July 14, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Haysi Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Allen Edwards officiating. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery on Frying Pan Creek, Birchleaf. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call Saturday at the funeral home after 5 p.m., where a song service will be held at 6 p.m.

LEBANON - Funeral services for Sarah Jane Lee will be held Sunday, July 14, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon. Burial will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery. Miss Lee, daughter of the late Robert E. and Marguerite W. Lee, passed away at her home near Lebanon Sunday, July 7, 2002.

Billy G. Leonard Sr.
Billy G. Leonard Sr., 68, of Bristol Tennessee died Friday, July 12, 2002, at Bristol Nursing Home. He was a native of Benhams, Va., and was born on Aug. 18, 1933, to the late Nelson and Myrtle Mann Leonard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Leonard; three sisters, Garnett Wagner, Blanche Leonard and Edna Leonard; and one brother, Jack Leonard.
Survivors include one daughter, Rita Holcombe of Greenville, S.C; sons Donnie Leonard, Billy Leonard Jr., Jason Leonard and Michael Leonard; and daughter-in-law Selena Rosenbalm, all of Bristol Tennessee; sisters Dorothy S. Snyder of Bristol Tennessee and Margaret L. Gragg of Bluff City; brothers James "J.D." Leonard and Charles J. Leonard, both of Blountville, and Paul E. Leonard and Robert "Bob" Leonard, both of Bristol Virginia; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Niles Kitzmiller officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:45 p.m. Saturday and at the home of his brother, Charles Leonard, 829 Big Hollow Road, Blountville.
The committal service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Forest Hills Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Wilson, James Hodge, Eddie Bowers, John Stone and Avery Bowers.

RICHLANDS - Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Fances Mallory will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Buddy Herald officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill. Pallbearers will be Sammy Wayne Craig, Doug Steele, Clyde Ball, Ira Brown, Wade Lowe, Hoyt McConnell, Luke McConnell, Adam McConnell, Dr. Cyrus Nasseri, Joy Honeycutt and Archie Monk.
Mrs. Mallory, 75, of 427 Buchanan St., died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at home following a lengthy illness.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands is in charge of arrangements.

Bill Mason
CHATHAM HILL, Va. - Mr. Bill Mason, 69, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at home.
Arrangements are incomplete at this time. The D.R. Henderson Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruby Salyer Roach
WISE - Ruby Salyer Roach, 74, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport.
She was a retired employee of Virginia Department of Highways as a time keeper, with 40 years of service and was a member of Esserville Freewill Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Fred Roach; one daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and Danny Stallard of Wise; two stepdaughters, Trecia McGuire of Blountville and Linda Roach of Big Stone Gap; her mother-in-law, Grace Roach of Big Stone Gap; and one brother-in-law, Dale Roach of Bethlehem, Pa.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Esserville Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Smith and Rev. David Nidiffer officiating. Entombment will follow in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise.
Memorial contributions may be made to Esserville Freewill Baptist Building Fund, c/o Ernest Culbertson, 6513 Union Hall Road, Norton, VA 24273.
Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, is in charge of arrangements.

Edna M. Sproles
IRMO, S.C. - Mrs. Edna M. Sproles, 86, of 400 London Pride Road and formerly of 1208 Happy Valley St., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, in the Brian Center, Columbia, S.C. A native of Russell County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Thomas E. and Carlie Sullivan Tignor. She had lived in Elizabethton since 1937, before moving to South Carolina a few years ago. Mrs. Sproles was a member of Oak Street Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert F. (Andy) Sproles on March 7, 1997; by a granddaugther, Jill Sproles; four sisters; and two brothers.
Survivors include a daughter, Nila Smith of Irmo; a son, Tommy Sproles of Elizabethton; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hendrich and Rev. Bob Polk officiating. Interment will be in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1:50 p.m. Saturday, will be Gene Smith, Hasferd Slemp, JimWilliams, Ralph Fletcher, Ron Berry and Jerry Stout. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge.
