BIRCHLEAF - Funeral services for Lula Church will be Sunday, July 14, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Andy Deel, Mark Justice and Earl Dean Yates officiating. Burial will follow in Church Family Cemetery at Birchleaf. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Church, 97, of the Rakes Ridge section, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at the home of her daughter-in-law, Dora Church.

Stuart Fields
LEBANON - Stuart H.C. Fields, 70, passed away at home Saturday, July 13, 2002. He was born in Lebanon, a son of the late John and Goldie McGraw Fields. He was an active volunteer and elder of Mt. Olive Christian Church. He also served his country in the Army during the Korean conflict. Stuart was the owner of Norfield Cabinets in Lebanon for 40 years. A brother, Thomas Fields, and a sister, Lena Fields, also preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Fields; daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda Fields and Teddy Rasnake and Linda and Frank Fogleman, all of Lebanon; grandchildren, Craig Fogleman, Candida Rasnake and Travis Rasnake; great-grandchildren Winter Rasnake, Dakota Rasnake, Salvatore Agri, Nicholas Agri, Benjamin Destafano and Amanda Smith; brothers Martin Fields, Edgar Fields and Oscar Fields; sisters Ruby Alexander, Dora Kennedy and Francis Hensley; special brother-in-law, Hugh Kinsler; special daughter, Debbie Cannon; and special son, Charles Robert Fogleman.
Pallbearers will be Phyllip Campbell, Giles Thomas Fields, Charles Robert Fogleman, Vincent Alexander Jr. and Mike Waddel.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Martin, Kenneth Alexander, Dewey Helton, Ramley Thomas, James Tignor, Oscar Crawford, Robert Kinsler, Charlie Johnson, Jerry Johnson, Tyler Kinsler, Sam Price and Anthony Campbell.
Funeral services will be held Monday, July 15, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Owens & Farmer Funeral Service Chapel with Minister Paul Young amd Minister John Owens officiating. Interment will follow at Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon, with military graveside rites by Lebanon VFW Post 9864.
The family will receive friends Sunday, July 14, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Olive Christian Church.

Samuel Lee Frazier
BLOUNTVILLE - Samuel "Sam" Lee Frazier, 76, of 110 Eagle View Drive died Friday after a brief illness at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Mr. Frazier lived most of his life in the Bristol area. He was an electrical engineer with Sperry Corp. with 14 years of service and then he retired from Raytheon with 20 years of service. He was a member of Blountville Christian Church and was a veteran of the Air Force.
Mr. Frazier was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Campbell.
Mr. Frazier is survived by his wife, Wanda Morton Frazier; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Frazier and wife, Rita, of Blountville, David Frazier of Bristol Tennessee and Stephen Frazier and wife, Kathy, of Doylestown, Pa.; two sisters, Ina Grubb and husband, Hartsell, of Rutherfordton, N.C., and Bailey Tate and husband, James, of Bristol Tennessee; six grandchildren, Robbie, Joan, Jessica, Lauren, Tyler and Katelin; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at 6 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dwight Shaffer, Rev. Leland Houser and Dr. Ross Dampier officiating. Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Weaver Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mark Morton, Bruce Morton, Mack Morton, Charlie Carver, Tom Morton, John Morton, Mike Gustafson, James Campbell, Frank Tate, Mike Tate, Gene Grubb and Earl Grubb. The family will receive friends following the funeral service.

Gwendolyn Graves
Gwendolyn Dawkins Graves, 91, of 113 Ridgewood Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at NHC Healthcare of Bristol.
She was born in Kirksville, Mo., a daughter of the late Jesse Mack and Mary E. Slaughter Dawkins. She was the widow of Dr. William H. Graves.
She and her husband moved to Bristol in 1940 to open his medical practice. Mrs. Graves was a music teacher in the public school system for many years. She was a longtime Sunday school teacher and was involved in missions at Euclid Avenue Baptist Church and was currently a member of First Baptist Church of Bluff City.
She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Ann Thompson and her husband, Tal, of Bristol, Gwendolyn Jeanne Stringer and her husband, Mike, of Portland, Ore., and Ellen Christine Carrico and her husband, Ron, of Bristol; a brother, Bill Dawkins of Keokuk, Iowa; granddaughter, Beth Hollingsworth and her husband, Rusty, of Kentucky; six grandsons; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 10 o'clock Thursday morning in Heritage Chapel of Memories at Glenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Bill Thompson, Paul David Thompson, Scott Biller, Robert Biller, John Stringer and Jeff Stringer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, Northeast Tennessee Chapter, 207 N. Boone St., Suite 1500, Johnson City, TN 37604. The family will receive friends from 6 til 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. Arrangements especially for Mrs. Graves have been made through Oakley-Cook Funeral Home.

Walter E. Hannold
BLUFF CITY - Mr. Walter E. "Walt" Hannold, 82, of 242 Vance Lane died Friday at his residence following a sudden illness. Mr. Hannold was a native of Philadelphia and had lived in Bluff City for the past 11 years. He was a son of the late Walter and Gertrude Knorr Hannold.
He was a retired chemical engineer with DuPont. He was a former Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Explorer Scout leader with 25 years of service. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, where he was a B-17 pilot and held the rank of captain. He was member, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Hannold, and one sister, Doris Hannold.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Carter Hannold of the home; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Dale E. Hannold of Newnan, Ga., Mark E. Hannold of Chillicothe, Ohio, and Boyd Andrew and Donna Hannold of Hillsbrough, N.J.; six grandchildren; one brother, Elwood Hannold of Elmer, N.J.; one sister, Elsie Huster of Elmer; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2002, in Chinaquapin Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Hensley, pastor, officiating.
A private interment of the cremains will take place at a later date. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Building Fund, Chinaquapin Grove Baptist Church, 1727 Chinquapin Grove Road, Bluff City, TN 37618.

BLUEFIELD, Va. - Funeral services for Mr. Vernie Albert "Tiny" Hess will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Sherman Lester and Rev. Peerman Lester officiating. Interment will follow in Richardson Cemetery at Stone Branch near Honaker.
Pallbearers will be Tracy Shrader, Ray Shrader, Randy Fuller, Curtis Barton, Steve Osborne and Anthony Deel.

Mr. Hess, 38, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2002, in Roncerverte, W.Va.

Thomas F. Johnson
CASTLEWOOD - Thomas F. Johnson, 85, died Saturday, July 13, 2002, in Russell County Medical Center.
Born March 31, 1917, in Russell County, a son of the late Charles Johnson and Nannie Couch Johnson, he was a retired carpenter and farmer who loved gardening. He was a member and trustee of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church for many years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Bascom Johnson.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Beulah Johnson; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Tom Johnson of Piney Flats and Lynn and Pat Johnson of Bristol Virginia; four grandchildren, Lisa Gail Johnson, Kristy Johnson Peltier, Matthew Lynn Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson Rush; three great-grandchildren, Korby Devin Johnson, Hailey Layne Rush and Kennedy Katherine Peltier; three sisters, Elizabeth Brown of Lebanon, Jean Shaffer of Hansonville and Eleanor Harrell of Kingsport; also nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 15, 2002, in Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Killen officiating. Burial will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Sidney Johnson, Matthew Johnson, David Johnson, Mark Edmonds, W.J. Dorton Jr., Bobby Dorton, Ron Peltier, Dan Rush and Jerry Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be: men of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church and Dr. Ernest Henry. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2002, at the funeral home. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. William Mason
CHATHAM HILL, Va. - Mr. William "Bill" Maynard Davis Mason, 69, died Friday, July 12, 2002, at home.
Born in Cheyenne, Wyo., where he resided until 1997, when he moved to Smyth County, Va. He was the son of the late Ernest and Wilma Davis Mason Fowler. He was also predeceased by a stepfather, Joe Fowler. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War, where he served as corporal. Mr. Mason was a member of the Baptist church.
Survivors include two sons, John Mason of Chatham Hill and Will Mason of Walterboro, S.C.; and one brother, Kenneth Mason of Punta Gorda, Fla.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Ridgedale United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ernest Yeatts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Saltville VFW Post 7328 conducting military rites. The family will receive friends beginning at noon prior to the service.

Bobby Outlaw, 68, of Bristol Virginia died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House.

Isaac Shepherd
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Isaac Aaron Douglas Shepherd, infant son of Douglas and Angie Conley Shepherd, 28 1/2 Oak Forest Drive, died Wednesday, July 10, in Charleston. He was preceded in death by two grandfathers, Steve Shepherd and Burt Conley.
Survivors include three sisters, Sasha, Hunter and Samantha; grandmother, Betty Shepherd of Charleston , S.C. and Joann Conley of Bristol Virginia; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services will be held Monday, July 15, 2002, at Palestine Cemetery, Palestine, Ohio at 10:30 a.m.

Dewey Taylor
HONAKER - Mr. Dewey Taylor, 73, passed away Friday, July 12, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born Dec. 14, 1928, in Russell County, he was a son of the late Cleveland and Molly Hess Taylor. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA Local 1760. He was a member of Masonic Pruner Lodge 254 AF & AM of Honaker and a member of the Jerico Shriners of Kingsport. He was of the Free Will Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Frances Taylor of the home; four sons, James Lewis Taylor and his wife, Nancy, William Barry Taylor and his wife, Debra, Leonard Clinton Taylor and Raymond Glen Taylor, all of Honaker; three daughters, Rita Joyce Watson and her husband, Danny, of Pounding Mill, Barbara Karen Cox and her husband, Ricky, of Honaker and Audrey Yvonne Key of Johnson City; two brothers, Amos Taylor of Centerville, Tenn., and Ellis Taylor of Honaker; three sisters, Charmie Shuker of Indianhead, Md., and Lucille Alderson and Maudie Blankenship, both of Honaker, 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchldren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Claude Reynolds and Rev. Kenneth Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum at Lebanon.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call at Honaker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Sunday.

Stephen Williams
Stephen (Steve) Woodson Williams, 49, of Bristol Virginia died Friday, July 12, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Williams was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol. He graduated from Virginia High School and attended King College. He was an employee of Hull Co. He was an active member of Three Springs United Methodist Church, where he held numerous jobs in the church. He was preceded in death by his father, J.P. Williams in March 2000.
Survivors include his wife, Teresa Byington Williams; one son, Stephen Woodson Williams Jr. of Bristol Virginia; one daughter, Angela Nicole Williams of Bristol Virginia; his mother, Anne Gilly Williams of Bristol Virginia; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Lorene Byington of Bristol Virginia. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Marion Blankenbeckler
JOHNSON CITY - Mr. Marion Harold Blankenbeckler, 79, of 2903 Antioch Road, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002, at the Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late Marion H. and Chloe May Blankenbeckler. He was a native of Mountain City, Tenn. He was a retired tool and die maker, having worked throughout the Tri-Cities area. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, James Sherwood Blankenbeckler and Boyd Blankenbeckler; and one sister, Marie Blankenbeckler Elliott.
Survivors are wife, Frances Gentry Blankenbeckler of the home; daughter, Linda B. Russo of Marion, N.C.; son, Richard H. Blankenbeckler, of Jonesborough, Tenn.; sisters, Ida Wilma "Sue" Henley of Johnson City, Lois Gene Wilson, Bluff City and Frances Collins, Kingman, Ariz.; brother, Loyd Blankenbeckler, Mountain City; granddaughter, Sara Lynne Blankenbeckler of Jonesborough; grandson, Stuart Kaleb Blankenbeckler of Jonesborough; and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be any time in the home of Frances Blankenbeckler, 2903 Antioch Road, Johnson City. Graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6, 2002, in Roselawn Cemetery, Johnson City, with Pastor John Hitchew officiating.

Florence W. Cawood
BLUFF CITY - Florence Wilkins Cawood, 86, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday morning, July 1, 2002, at her residence after a lengthy illness. She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Scott Cawood; three sons, Donald, Phillip and David Cawood; her parents, Margaret and William Wilkins; three brothers, Bill, Earnest and Joe Wilkins; and a sister, Helen Smithson.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Cleo and Jim Adams, Margaret and Terry Shuemaker, all of Bristol Tennessee, Wanda and Robert Webb of Bluff City, and Pam and Harold Haun of Piney Flats, Tenn.; two sisters, Mildred Duncan of Greeneville, Tenn., and Mary Wood of Bristol Tennessee; one brother, Jack Wilkins of Bristol Tennessee; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a special niece, Debbie Lindamood of Piney Flats; and a special friend, Arizona Cox of Bluff City.
Mrs. Cawood was a member of Riverbend Baptist Church.
Visitation will be Tuesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. in the Chapel of Weaver Funeral Home with Reverend J.D. Neeley and Reverend Scott Watson officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednsday at Crumley Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Home Hospice nurses from Bristol Regional Medical Center and Dr. Sue Prill and staff.

Paula Elizabeth Crabtree
LEBANON - The funeral service for Paula Elizabeth Crabtree will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Brother William K. Clay officiating. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Crabtree, 39, died June 29, 2002, in the Russell County Medical Center.

Robert W. Farmer
SALTVILLE - Mr. Robert Wayne "Bobby" Farmer, 46, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at his home in Saltville. Mr. Farmer was a member of the Heavenly Hope Freewill Baptist Church and had worked for the U.S. Gypsum Co. for 18 years. He was preceded in death by his father, James Robert Farmer.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Deborah Griffey Farmer. Other survivors include: his mother, Frances O. Farmer, Saltville; three brothers, Jim Farmer and wife, Cathy, Graham, N.C., Ricky Farmer and wife, Suzanne, Meadowview and Jacky Farmer and wife Mona, Saltville; six brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Gary and Sharon Griffey, Saltville, Carl and Missi Griffey, Saltville, Archie and Sherry Griffey, Saltville, Robin and Bobby Lloyd, Saltville, Julie and Eric Prater, Saltville and Carol Griffey; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nancy and Archie E. Griffey, Saltville; and several nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2002, in the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Bobby Collins and Rev. Charlie Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 till 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the D.R. Henderson Funeral Home and at the Farmer residence, 104 Pagetown Road, Saltville. Pallbearers will be: Eric Prater, Greg Prater, Ronnie Olinger, Jeff Olinger, Jay Olinger Justin Chapman. James Ellis Fields Sr.
INOLA, Okla. - A memorial service for James Ellis Fields Sr. will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Austin Fields officiating. Burial with military rites by the Lebanon V.F.W. Post 9864 will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Fields, 67, died Sunday, June 30, 2002, in a Roanoke hospital.

Myrtle Virginia Fields
Myrtle Virginia Fields, age 82, of 104 13th St., Bristol, Tenn., passed away June 29, 2002, at her residence.
Mrs. Fields was a native and lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was the widow of Joe Fields. She was a retired employee of the Bristol Memorial Hospital and was of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include one daughter, Winona Hopson of Bristol, Tenn.; three grandchildren, George Edward Hopson, Lesa Hopson and Noah Hopson III; and four great-grandchildren, Caitlin Greer, Joshua Geer, Tyler Greer and Chris Hopson.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, 2002, in the Mountain View Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with Lee Burnette officiating. There will be no formal visitation held at the funeral home. The family requested in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Bristol Life Saving Crew, 1601 Euclid Ave., Bristol, VA 24201.
