Guy W. Wilson
VANSANT - Guy W. Wilson, 70 years of age, passed away Thursday July 25, 2002, at the Buchanan General Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Russell County, he was the son of the late Sanford and Laura Short Wilson. He was a member of the Harman Freewill Baptist Church for 33 years where he served as a deacon and guitar player and was a disabled coal miner.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Pauline Shortridge Wilson of Vansant; one daughter, Mrs. Mike (Angie) Cantrell of Route 2, Grundy; one son, Eddie and his wife Shirley Wilson of Grundy; one brother, Linkous and his wife Marie Wilson of Shady Springs, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Melody Wilson Oquinn, Brooke Wilson, Cody Cantrell, Isaac Cantrell and Connor Cantrell.
He was preceded in death by four sisters; and six brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 28, 2002, at 1 p.m. at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Ronnie Sliger and Brother Gene Miller officiating with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va.
Friends may call at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel after 6 p.m. Friday and there will be evening services Friday and Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
Active pallbearers: Kenny Bowman, Warren Childress, Eric Fuller, Ferrell Shortridge, Billy Shortridge, Terry Robinson and Mark Linzy.
Honorary pallbearers: Dr. Clint Sutherland, 5th Floor nursing staff of Buchanan General Hospital, Buchanan General Home Health Care, Ronnie Cox, Ronnie Owens, Ronnie Stiltner, David Owens, Joe Ratliff and deacons of Harman Freewill Baptist Church.

Don Eller Bane
FRONT ROYAL, Va. - Don Eller Bane, 65, of Bentonville, Va.,. died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, in the Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal.
He was a son of the late John H. Jr. and Mary V. Catron Bane.
Surviving are his wife, Sara Bane; two sons, George L. Bane and Don E. Bane, both of Front Royal; three daughters, Mary Bane, Silver Springs, Md., Donna M. Pruitt, Bentonville and Deborah A. Coe, Gaithersburg, Md.; one brother, Harry L. Bane, Marion; four sisters, Lois Testerman, Marion, Wavy Archer, Disputanta and Agnes Askins and Linda Dallas, both of Bentonville; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Friday in Front Royal.

Wiley "Fred" Cole, 66, Bristol Virginia, died Monday at home.

Katherine Combs Doss
BLUFF CITY - Katherine "Katie" Combs Doss, 69, of 500 Elizabethton Highway, passed away on July 17, 2002, at the Wellmont Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late George and Katherine Combs, and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. She was a housewife and was of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Everett Matthew Doss Sr.
Survivors include: daughters, Mildred Hawkins and Mary Ellen Jones; special daughter-in-law, Becky Doss; sons, Robert Doss, Clarence Doss and James Doss; special son-in-law, Junior Malone; sisters, Brenda Howington, Goldie Keesee and Blanch Gregg; special sister-in-law, Terry Combs; brother, John Wayne Combs; 27 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by mother, father, husband, son, daughter; four sisters; and three brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Zimmerman officiating. Interment will follow at Sunrise Cemetery. Pallbearers include: Jeff Glover, David Malone, Robert Belcher, Eddie Hawkins, Jamie Doss, J.R. Graybeal, Ronnie Mutter, Johnny Mutter and Jeremy Cope. Ida A. Lowe
GRUNDY - Ida Marie Allen Lowe, 85 years of age, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home, Grundy, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Loama and Belle Stiltner Allen. She was a life-long resident of Buchanan County, was of the Pentecostal faith and a loving mother and grandmother. She had a great interest in growing flowers.
Mrs. Lowe was preceded in death by her husband, Mancy Monroe Lowe, June 9, 1961.
She is survived by two daughters, Penny and husband, Tommy Owens, Abingdon and Sue and husband, Randy Scott, Vansant, Va.; two sons, Paul and wife, Brenda Lowe, Vansant and Rickey and wife, Lynn Lowe, Grundy; one god daughter, Rosa Keen, Grundy; two sisters, Lillian Blackburn, Hurley, Va., and Mabel Prater, Hurley; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, May Gooslin; and one brother, Roy Allen.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, July 20, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clyde Harman and Rev. Jerry Harman officiating with burial to follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, Va.
Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Thursday evening at 6 p.m. with services Friday evening at 7 p.m.

Mrs. Montgomery, 61, of 1711 1/2 Georgia Ave., Bristol, Tenn., passed away July 16, 2002, at Bristol Nursing Home.

Alva Mae Powers
LEBANON - Alva Mae Powers, 79, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, in the Maple Grove Health Care Center.
Born April 19, 1923, in Bluefield, Va., the daughter of the late Robert and Maggie Smith, she was the widow of Conard M. Powers.
She was a member of the Lebanon Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include: a niece, Carolyn Mears, Upland, Calif.; a cousin, Karen S. Evans, Bluefield, Va.; a lifelong friend, Marguerite Smith, Bluefield, Va.; and a special friend, Connie Simoson of Bristol Tennessee.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Mike Carter officiating. Entombment will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Gary Charles Shrader
CEDAR BLUFF - Mr. Gary Charles Shrader, 47, of Route 1, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Richlands and was a son of the late George and Myrtle Lester Shrader, both Cedar Bluff natives.
He was a life long resident of the Cedar Bluff area and was a 1973 graduate of Richlands High School. He was a retired employee of Island Creek and Consol Coal Company in Buchanan County, Va., and was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 2232 at Keen Mountain. He was also a former employee with Tri-County Driving Academy in Hansonville, Va. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Emma Brooke Damron and one brother, James Willard "Jim" Shrader.
Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Karen Gale Alicie Shrader; two daughters, Mrs. James (Marcia) Damron of Route 1, Cedar Bluff and Mrs. Eddie (Joni) Shawver of North Tazewell, Va.; two sons, Mr. Adam Shrader and wife, Kristy of Rosedale, Va., and Mr. Josh Shrader of the home; two sisters, Mrs. James (Jaunita) Joyce of Ashville, Ohio, and Mrs. Jeanette Bise of Marion; two brothers, Mr. Harold Shrader of Route 1, Cedar Bluff and Mr. Pat Shrader of Route 1, Cedar Bluff; and seven grandchildren, Austin, Dallas, Matthew, Hunter, Casey, Albany and DeAnna.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Ed Hankins officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be: Dana Joyce, Darrell Joyce, Ricky Bise, Carter McGlothlin, Darrell Perkins, Greg Price, Trigg Moore, Donnie Lowe and Tiger Maxfield. Graveside services for Lois Baker Smith will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 18, 2002, at the Temple Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. Herman Lee Smith
WISE - Herman Lee Smith, 81, passed away Monday, July 15, 2002, at his home.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Norton V.F.W. Post 4301 and the Wise DAV Chapter 56.
Surviving are one daughter, Laura Smith Meekins; one brother, Bruce Smith of Spokane, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Wise. Burial will follow in the Laurel Grove Cemetery, Norton, with graveside military rites being conducted by Norton V.F.W. Post 4301 and Wise DAV Chapter 56. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Friday at Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise.

Buryl Rife Sykes
VANSANT, Va. - Buryl R. Sykes, 34, of the Prater Community, died Monday, July 15, 2002.
Born at Grundy, he was a son of the late Thurman and Thelma Ellis Sykes. In addition to his parents; two brothers, Stevie Sykes, and an infant brother; and four infant sisters preceded him in death.
A special thank you to his brother, Carl, for always being there for him and for being his friend.
He is survived by nine brothers, Felix Sykes, Van Sykes and Jimmy Stapleton, all of North Carolina, Sam Stapleton of Tennessee, Jerry Stapleton of Coeburn, Carl Sykes of Vansant, Delano Sykes of Birchleaf, Carter Sykes of West Virginia, and Jurl Sykes of Salem; six sisters, Tammy Sykes of Big Stone Gap, Faye Barton, Vansant, Mary Compton of Honaker, Judy Hickson of Newport, Tenn., Wanda Lester of Grundy and Margie Edwards of Birchleaf; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Thursday, July 18, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Franklin Viers, Ronnie Rose and Bobby Rose officiating. Burial will follow in the Tiller Cemetery at Council, Va. Active pallbearers will be John Sykes, Farley Sykes, Davy Harris, Darrell Compton, Timothy Stephens and Daniel Allen Stapleton. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Barton, Luther Lester, Carl Sykes, Delnao Sykes and James Compton.

Cowart, Dr. James Belcher, Dr. Anthony H. Daniels, Dr. W.A. Johnson and the Rev. Herbert W. Scott officiating. Music will be provided by Richard Lomax and the men's choir. Burial will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon with full military honors conducted by the U.S. Army Fort Lee Honor Guard. Maxine Hendricks Webb
Maxine Hendricks Webb, born again Christian of the Baptist faith, joined our Lord on Wednesday, July 17, 2002. Beloved and cherished mother of daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis A. Webb, Brenda K. and Richard Bube, Carolyn Sue and Andrew Miller, Judy L. and John Mayhew and Trudy F. and Phillip Hughes; and son and daughter-in-law, David and Joanne Hendricks. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Robert DeForge, Jennifer Troisi, Lisa and Ginger Glover, Brent and Joshua Miller, Jessica Dye, Aaron Hendricks, Matthew Hughes and Brittany Mayhew; and seven great-grandchildren. Also sister-in-law, Ruth Lilley; and dear friend, Loretta Poole.
Mrs. Webb was a devoted friend to many neighbors and tirelessly aided friends and family.
She was preceded in death by a half sister, Letha Presnell.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Gordon Hughes and David Hendricks officiating. Committal services at the National Cemetery will be private. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers include: Dr. John Fincher, Dr. A.J. Morris, Karen Vaughn and John M. Glover. MEADOWVIEW - Mrs. Nannie Lillian Callahan Williams, 75, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at her home. She was a lifelong resident of Washington County and the daughter of the late William Harrison and Lena Jane Clark Callahan. She was a loving mother and devoted wife who always put others first. She was dedicated to her job as a nurses aide at Johnston Memorial Hospital where she retired with 24 years of service. She enjoyed gardening. She was a member of Greenfield Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include: her husband, Vern Williams; one son and daughter-in-law, Vern C. and Laura Sue Williams of Glade Spring; four daughters and sons-in-law, Jane Williams and husband Randall Day of Sparta, Tenn., Donna Williams and husband Thomas D. McConnell of Meadowview, Suzanne William McGlocklin of Meadowview and Kimberly Williams Parks and husband Wayne Eller of Shady Valley, Tenn.; one brother, Charles (Wimp) Callahan of Glade Spring; one sister, Sally Ann Callahan Jester of Lexington, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Patrizia and Daniel Smith, Margaret Williams, Clara Miller and Agnes Miller.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alan McCullough and Pastor Elden Bergen officiating.

The committal service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Greenfield Baptist Cemetery.

MARION - Mary Woznick, 63, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, in the Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
Survivors: one son, James William Foster, Bronx, N.Y.; one daughter, Laura Jean Cerossimo, Marion; two sisters, Alice Ellen Paterno, Hollywood, Fla., and Laura Suzanne Greer, California; three grandchildren, Cheyenne Summer Martis, Shayla Marie Martis and Kimberly Ann Foster.
Mrs. Woznick's body will be cremated and the ashes buried icon in St. Raymond's Catholic Cemetery in New York.

BLUFF CITY - Worley Lewis Berry, 76, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2002, at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn.

Wendell H. Delong
RICHLANDS - Mr. Wendell Holmes Delong, 69, of 504 Brown Ave. passed away Friday, July 5, 2002, at home following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Whitewood, Va., and was the son of the late John Wallace and Myrtle Clifton Delong, both Buchanan County natives.
He had made his home in the Whitewood and Richlands areas all of his life and was a disabled miner. He was a graduate of Whitewood High School Class of 1952 and attended King College in Bristol Virginia. He was a member of UMWA Local 7327 Jewell Valley, Va. He was an honorary mmber of both the Richlands Masonic Lodge 318 AF & AM and the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge 260 AF & AM. He was also a member of the O'Keefe Royal Arch Chapter of Tazewell, the ClinchValley Commandry and the Roanoke Kazim Temple and Scottish Rite Bodies.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Walsie Wheeler; and four brothers, Perishing, Wallace, Maurice and Warren Delong.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Evelyn Broughton Delong; one son, Mr. John Kim Delong and wife, Eileen, of Rockwell, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Nina Slater and Jesse Slater also survive.
Graveside services will be conducted Sunday, July 7, 2002, at 2 p.m. at ClinchValley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands with the Rev. Jerry Welch officiating. Interment will follow.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum in Richlands.
