RUSSELL COUNTY, Va. - The funeral service for Bobby S. Sword will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in the Mountain View Community Church with the Revs. Darrell Harmon and Brian Trent officiating. Burial will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon. Pallbearers will be Greg Hess, Berton Combs, Allen Combs, Gary Combs, Robert Meade and Steven Dotson. Honorary pallbearers will be Burley Mullins, C.B. Williams, Robert Sword, Kyle Sword, Robert Fields, Bill Wampler, Jim Kiser, Garnett Duncan and the men of the Mountain View Community Church.
Mr. Sword, 62, of the Loop section went to be with Tyler Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in the Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.

Leada H. Syphers
LEBANON - Lt. Col. Leada Helton Syphers (Retired), of 535 Cedar Drive, Lebanon Manor, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at her home.
Born in Russell County a daughter of the late Walter G. Helton and Nannie Victoria McCloud Helton, she had lived in Richmond and Bristol returning to Lebanon in 1997. She was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving as a nurse, retiring with 30 years of service.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ishmael W. Helton and Orville B. Helton.
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. W.C. (Estella) Elliott and Mrs. Calvin (Elizabeth) Breeding, both of Lebanon, and Mrs. Richard (Victoria) Wesley, Bluefield, W.Va.; also several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Tom Edwards officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Patton-Crosswhite V.F.W. Post 6975 will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in the Mountain View Cemetery in Bristol Virginia. Those attending should meet at the cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends 7-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lebanon Baptist Church, P.O. Box 55, Lebanon, VA 24266 or to the Russell County Medical Center Hospice, P.O. Box 3600, Lebanon, VA 24266.

Thomas Earl Thomas
GLADE SPRING - Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Earl Thomas will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Farris Funeral Chapel. Rev. Geary Jonas, Rev. Robert Lanter and Rev. Jerry Anders will officiate. Interment will follow in Mount Rose Cemetery in Glade Spring. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Nathan Thomas, Steve Thomas, Ronald Thomas, Jeff Sweat, Frankie Gregory and Jesse Fore. Mr. Thomas, 68, died Friday.

DANTE, VA. - Funeral services for Nancy E. Ruff Bailey will be conducted in Castlewood Fuenral Home Chapel, Castlewood, Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at 8 p.m. with Rev. Ted Phillips officiating. Committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. The funeral procession will leave for the cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Pallbearers will be Barry Ruff, Casey Ruff, Deric Ruff, Jamie Dixon, Jackie Grizzle and Mark Grizzle.

Mrs. Bailey, 47, died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon.

Nettie W. Baldwin
BANDY, Va. - Mrs. Nettie Rose Whitt Baldwin, 85, passed away Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Tazewell County, she was the daughter of the late John Y. Whitt Sr. and Mary Boothe Whitt.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Baldwin; two sons, Jerry L. Baldwin and Melvin Dewey Baldwin; one daughter,Virginia Carol Baldwin; two brothers, Carl Whitt and John Y. (Donnie) Whitt Jr.; and one sister, Bessie Blankenship.
She is survived by two sons, Charles T. Baldwin and wife Darla of Bandy and Edward L. Baldwin and wife Sandee of Roanoke; one brother, Milbern T. Whitt of Cedar Bluff; two sisters, Becky Pruett of Bandy and Delphine Simmons of Spring Hill, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va., with Rev. Sam Altizer and Rev. Kenny Brown officiating.
The family will receive friends at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6-8 p.m. Saturday.

David B. Blackwell
WEBER CITY - Graveside services for David Brian Blackwell will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at 11 a.m. in Blackwell Family and (Fincastle) Cemetery in Dungannon, Va. John Kilgore, Michael Pyne, Jason Blackwell, Gabe Story, Jake Story, Michael Pauley, David Pauley and Wes Adams will serve as pallbearers. Bobby Click, Paul McKinney, Terry Olinger, Ben Irwin, Dale Jett, Oscar Harris, Bruce Nickols, Stan Rogers, Dave Mason and Gary Story will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will meet at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Mr. Blackwell, 30, entered into rest Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002.

Sandra S. Coleman
ABINGDON - The funeral service for Mrs. Sandra Dee Shortridge Coleman will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at 1 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel with Elder Roger Coleman and Elder Frank O'Quinn officiating.
Interment will follow in Mountain View United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Mark Cole, Bill Nunley, Bruce Roberson, Clayton Keen, Tom Watson, Joe Naffah, Paul Taylor and Byron Johnson.
Honorary casketbearers will be the congregation of West Main Street Freewill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Coleman, 39, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.

Earl C. Counts Jr.
LEBANON - Burial for Earl Cecil Counts Jr. with military rites conducted by Lebanon VFW Post 9864 will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in Russell Memorial Cemetery. Those attending are requested to meet at the church at 10:30 a.m. to go to the cemetery in procession. Pallbearers will be Joe Fields, Brady Harris, Larkin Booth, Leonard Fletcher, Steve Wallace, Don Mosier and George Tatter. Mr. Counts, 84, of Route 3 died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.

William Robert Glover
ELIZABETHTON - William Robert "Bob" Glover, 73, 1200 Broad St., died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Sullivan County, he was a son of Lucille Roberson Glover, Elizabethton, and the late Edward F. Glover. He was a graduate of the Bluff City High School. He had lived a number of years in Carter County. Mr. Glover was a pilot for Carter County Bank and Summer-Taylor Paving Company. He was a member of the Grace Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Kathleen Lewis Glover; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Robert W. and Molly Glover and Eric S. Glover, all of Elizabethton; one sister, Dorothy Oliver, Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, Weston S. Glover, Leslie Glover, Rob Glover and Brian Glover; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ron Owens officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 2:55 p.m. Sunday, will be Sturgill Lewis, Phillip Jones, Dan Mills, Tommy Roberson, Pat McGinnis, Harmon Glover, Herbert Glover and Daniel Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Jim Myers, Randy Musick, Edward Townsend, Junior Stanley, Jack Perkins, Walter Hendrix Jr., Steve Hubbard, Jim Enkema, Jack Hamilton, officers and employees of Carter County Bank, officers and employees of Summer-Taylor Paving Company. C.W. Greer
MEMPHIS - C.W. "Bud" Greer, 70, of 2421 Brookmeade went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Methodist Hospital. He was born inWashington County, Va., on Feb. 17, 1932, a son of the late Conley and Addie Johnson Greer.
A former resident of Damascus, Mr. Greer had made his home in Memphis for the past 20 years. He was of the Baptist faith and a retired construction worker.
Survivors incldue two sisters, Losi Miller of Ocala, Fla., and Leona Swoap of Bell, Fla.; three brothers, Blaine Greer of Jacksonville, Fla., Everett Greer of Ocala and Gene Greer of Mile City, Mont.; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at the graveside in Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus with Rev. Mark Baumgardner officiating. Thelma Nash Hughes
CLEVELAND, Va. - Thelma Nash Hughes, 72, of the Spring City Community, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in the Russell County Medical Center.
Born Feb. 19, 1930, a daughter of the late Major Babe Nash and Laura Eva Monk Nash, she had lived her entire life in Russell County. She was a member of the Copper Ridge Baptist Church and attended the Spring City Baptist Church and the Lady's Sunday School Class. She was the widow of Lacey E. Hughes.
She was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Amy Rachel Brown; four brothers, Major Arthur, John Donald, George Ellis and Ira Bascom Nash; and three sisters, Mary Alice Cook, Leona Monk and Nora Eva Nash.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Betsy and Ed Brown, Judy and Jim Meadows and Karen Yates; and one son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Cathy Hughes, all of Lebanon; eight grandchildren, Joshua Hughes, Michael Hughes, Nathan Brown, Theda (Tes) Salyer, Andrew Salyer, Lacie Yates, Pepper Yates and Conley Yates; one sister, Naomi Hart, Max Meadows; one brother, Willis Nash, Atlanta; two sisters-in-law, Lois Carter, Gate City, and Kathleen Robinson, Cleveland; one brother-in-law, Bill Hughes, Lebanon; also several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, in the Spring City Baptist Church with Pastor Brent Logan, the Rev. Duane Musick and Assistant Pastor Scott Suttle officiating. Burial will follow in the Ketron Memorial Gardens. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Richard and Cathy Hughes, Scenic Green Valley Estates, Lebanon. The body will be taken to the church one hour before the service.

Loretta Jones
NORTON - Funeral services for Loretta Jones will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Buchanan officiating. Burial will follow in Grey Cemetery on Guest River Road.
Miss Jones, 72, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2002, in Norton Community Hospital.

Clayton G. Lockart
ABINGDON - Mr. Clayton George Lockhart, 78, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital. Clayton was born March 14, 1924, in Panther, W.Va., and was a resident of Abingdon for 30 years.
He was a graduate of Iaeger High School in Iaeger, W.Va., and served in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in October of 1945. Upon his return from the service, Clayton served as a conductor with Norfolk & Western Railway and retired in 1985 with 38 1/2 years of service.
Clayton was a member and deacon of the Victory Baptist Church, where he faithfully attended for 20 years. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing with many of his church and railroad friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and George Lockhart; and two brothers, Chilton (Chick) Lockhart and Shirley (PD) Lockhart.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 50 years, Chlela Ann England Lockhart; two daughters, Rhonda Lockhart, Columbus, N.C., and Nancy Lockhart McFarland, Spartanburg, S.C.; two grandchildren, Clayton Blaine Lockhart McFarland and Allison Elizabeth Lockhart McFarland, both of Spartanburg.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at 5:45 p.m. in the Victory Baptist Church, Bristol Virginia, with Dr. Austin Cook, Rev. Joel Cook and Rev.Howard Robinson officiating.
A committal graveside service will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Those attending the service Sunday are asked to assemble in the Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at the cemetery for the service.
Casketbearers will be Roger McCracken, George Price, Lloyd Duty, John Brewer, J.B. McReynolds and Garland Taylor.
Honorary casketbearers will be Charlie Hawkins, Dale Cook, Bob Guffy, Raymond Barrett, Ray Edwards, Harrison James, Charles Brooks, Howard Roop and Clinton Asbury.

Marveen N. Marbury
ABINGDON - Mrs. Marveen N. Marbury, 73, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at the Bristol Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol Tennessee. She was a native of Pennsylvania and was a daughter of the late David C. Coleman and Theresa Tross Coleman. She was preceded in death by her sister,Virginia.
Mrs. Marbury was a member of the Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church and was a longtime volunteer with Johnston Memorial Hospital's Blood Drive Program and the Depot Artist Association as well as numerous other volunteer organizations.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph E. Marbury Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Jim White of Abingdon; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Cathy Marbury of Alpharetta, Ga.; a brother, David Coleman of Florida; a sister, DorothyDeStout of Florida; and three grandchildren, Jane, Daniel and Steven.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Pastor Robert Tolar officiating. In place of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations in memory of Mrs. Marbury be made to the Bristol Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, Tenn., or Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, 136 E. Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210. RAVEN, Va. - Mrs. Rosella Hagerman Pruitt, 89, of Route 1, went to be with the Lord Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Charles (Joy) Rampley at Meadowview.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Gertie Robinson
BIRCHLEAF - Gertie Robinson, 73, passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at her residence. Born in Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Tom and Lucy Ann Owens, and the widow of Fred Robinson. In addition, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Sam, Don and Leonard Owens; and a granddaughter, Laurie Briest. Mrs. Robinson was a homemaker and a member of the Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, Kent and Marsha Robinson of Birchleaf; daughters, Laura and Bob Briest of Birchleaf, Brenda and Bill Mooney of Ferndale, Mich., and Joyce and Gary Vance of Haysi; sisters, Flossie Deel and Ruby Compton, both of Michigan; Gaye Edwards of Clintwood, Loreen Powers of Abingdon and Rebel Jones of Florida; brothers, Lewie Owens of North Carolina and Ferral Owens of Honaker; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Mooney, Kim Briest, Jessie Hamm, Scott, Brad and SheltonVieau, John and Jason Vance, Carrie Taylor and Larry Robinson; 12 great-grandchildren, Rachel, James and Sara Hamm, Will and Joseph Mooney, Jennifer Briest, Taylor, Ollie and Gracie Vance, Zachary Taylor and Kiana and Andrew Vieau.
The funeral service will be Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Haysi Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Franklin Viers and Bobby Arrington officiating. Burial will follow in the Robinson Family Cemetery at Birchleaf. Sons-in-law and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 5 p.m. on Saturday and an evening service will be held at 6 p.m.
