Gilmer Addison
MIDDLEBROOK, Va. - Mr. Gilmer Addison, 66, formerly of Buchanan County and Maryland, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at home following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Charles G. and Charlotte Keen Addison. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Claude and Glenn Addison; and one sister, Ann Addison Jackson, preceded him in daeth.
He was a U.S.Army veteran and was a retired inspector for the State of Maryland Environmental Services Department. He enjoyed gardening, flowers and carpentry and was a jack-of-all-trades. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother.
He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Mrs. Katherine Sue Wade Addison; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Bryan Sloper of Jefferson, Md.; two sons, Gregory Addison of Odenton, Md., and Eric Addison of Fredrick, Md.; five grandchildren, Kelsey Sloper, Joshua Addison, Bryant Sloper Jr., Isaiah Addison and Georgia Sloper; four sisters, Gussie Johnson of Marvin, Va., Grace Ratliff and husband, Wyatt, of Oakwood, Va., Lucille Relyea and husband, Russell, of Boise, Idaho, and Geneva Ratliff and husband, Bill, of Oakwood; one brother-in-law, Corbit Jackson of Marvin; and one sister-in-law, Thelma Addison of Marvin.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain with Revs. Ancil Childress and Paul McNally officiating. Burial will follow in Mutter-Addison Cemetery at Marvin. Pallbearers will be family. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Harmon, Earl Addison, Robert Mangum and brothers-in-law.
The Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 DAV will conduct military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends at Buchanan Funeral Service at Keen Mountain from 7-9 p.m. Saturday.

James G. Austin
VENIA, Va. - Mr. James Garland Austin, 73, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born June 12, 1929, in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Rev. Roland and Ida Bell Helton Austin. He had spent most of his life in the Buchanan County area and was a member of Austin Chapel Church. He had served in the U.S. Army from 1950-52. He was a retired coal miner with 36 years of service, having been employed by Clinchfield Coal Co. He was a member of the UMWA Local 2274.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Draper Hess Austin of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Shearl Austin of Honaker and Gregory and Diania Austin of Venia; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gale and James Carter of Rosedale, Va., and Anita and David Tiller of Council, Va.; two brothers, Henry Austin and Curtis Austin, both of Venia; and four grandchildren, Cindy Austin, Chris Austin, Brett Carter and Aaron Carter also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Bennie Harris, Rev. Ellis Nuckles and Rev. Willard Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Austin Cemetery in Venia.
Pallbearers will be Dallas James, Bill Sheppard, Tom Severt, Odell Kiser, Clinton Hess, Sam Hess, Chris Severt and Jeff Hess.
Honorary pallbearers will be Arnold Helton, George Helton, Eugene Austin, Brady Farmer, Chester McGlothlin, Kermit Keen and Garfield Hess.

Alf C. Crawford
BLOUNTVILLE - Friends of Alfred Chase (Alf) Crawford will meet for a graveside service 10 a.m. Saturday at East Lawn Memorial Park with Kenneth Pruitt officiating. Joe Byrd and the American Legion Hammond Post 3 of Kingsport will conduct a flag presentation. Pallbearers will be Larry Stapleton, Matthew Stapleton, Harold Stapleton, Chuck Mullins, Jeff Berry and Leon Salyer.
Mr. Crawford, 76, formerly of Catawba Street in Kingsport went peacefully to be with his Lord Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002.

Ernest R. Dye
HONAKER - Funeral services for Mr. Ernest Ralph Dye will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Howard Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery at Lebanon.
Pallbearers will be Chester Ball, Brian Dye, Billy Stroupe, Chadwick Ball, Michael Honaker and David Honaker.
Mr. Dye, 96, passed away Wednesay, Oct. 16, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital.

Hattie L. Ferrell
RICHLANDS - Mrs. Hattie L. "Maw" Ferrell, 100, of 1803 Fifth St. died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at a Lebanon hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Belfast, Va., and was a daughter of the late William and Jenny Nipper Lowe, both Russell County natives.
She was a lifelong resident of the Richlands area and was a former employee of various grocery stores. She was a member of Gethsemane Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Clyde M. Ferrell Sr.; one son, Clyde M. Ferrell Jr.; one sister, Lucy Lowe Olsen; and three brothers, Garland, Blane and Clinton.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Hattie was an active charter member of Gethsemane Baptist Church where she served faithfully for many years with the "kitchen crew." She was a member of the sanctuary choir and a diligent worker in Vacation Bible School. She loved fishing and traveling.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Cornelia Cox and husband, James, of Richlands and Mrs. Dorothy Gilbert and husband, Bernard, of Richlands; two sons, Mr. Kenneth "Duke" Ferrell and wife, Dona, of Richlands and Mr. Hubert Lee "Dickie" Ferrell and wife, Dolly, of Richlands; six grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at Gethsemane Baptist Church in Richlands with Rev. Stafford Compton and Rev. Cecil Herrin officiating. Interment will follow in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemtery in Richlands. Pallbearers will be Jim Gilbert, Brian Ferrell, Joe Sparks, Bradley Ferrell, Tim Gilbert and Marcus Sparks. Pallace Mae Fields
HONAKER - Mrs. Pallace Mae Fields, 89, of Coxtown Road passed away Friday morning, Oct. 18, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Richlands. Born Nov. 25, 1912, in Russell County, she was a daughter of the late David A. and Minnie C. Ward Hess. A lifelong resident of the Honaker area, she was a member of Honaker Church of God. She was a business woman, having owned and operated Fields Supermarket and Laundromat.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Graham Fields; two sons, Roger Fields and Leonard Fields; one daughter, Virginia Dare Fields; one son-in-law, John Ramsey; three sisters, Lucille Stoots, Loetta Fields and Katherine Cox; three brothers, Burton Hess, Eugene Hess and Raymond Hess; one granddaughter, Tonya Denise Ramsey; and one great-granddaughter, Heather Dawn Ramsey.
Survivors include one daughter, Patsy Ruth Ramsey of Richlands; one sister, Martha Smith of Honaker; two brothers, Rev. Harless Hess and Jerry Hess, both of Honaker; grandchildren, Linda and Theo Collins of Harlan, Ky., Patricia and Kenneth Dye of Richlands, Johnnie Ruth and Roger Bargo of Harlan, Cathy and Cecil Ratliff of Abingdon, Marietta and Eddie Mercer of Abingdon, Michael and Ellen Ramsey of Newport News, Va., Darryl and Sue Fields of Cleveland, Ohio, Rebecca Honaker of Honaker and David Fields of Hampton, Va.; 14 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, John and Debbie Teets.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Pastor Larry Brooks, Rev. Harless Hess and Rev. John Teets officiating. Interment will follow in Russell Memorial Cemtery in Lebanon.
Pallbearers will be Jared Clark, Todd Collins, Nick Shortridge, Ben Mercer, Heath Dye and Andy Altizer.

John C. French Sr.
TANNERSVILLE, Va. - Mr. John Craven French Sr., 81, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at home. He was the son of the late George and Margie Lawrence French. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, a retired vocational school teacher at Tazewell and a recipient of the Wiley R. "Pappy" Yates, Teacher of the Year Award for 1994-95. In 1997 he retired, being one of the oldest teachers in the county at that time. He graduated from Bluefield College, received a BA degree in 1984, was a former employee of U.S. Steel, a carpenter, blacksmith, avid hunter and gardener and was the former president of the Saltville Coon Club.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Carolyn Coe French; two sons, John C. French Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Chilhowie and Douglas French and wife, Jackie, of Saltville; three grandsons, Chris French, Chad French and Ryan French, all of Chilhowie; one sister, Olivene French Morand of New London, N.C.; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Jeff, Nancy and Billy Joe Holmes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with Rev. Kyle French and Rev. Wiley Neal officiating. Committal services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, in Ridgedale Cemetery with Saltville VFW Post 7318 conducting military rites. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home just prior to the funeral service.

Alta R. Helton
GRUNDY - Alta Florence Cook Ratliff Helton, 90, of the Little Prater section passed away at home Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, following a brief illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Lilburn and Rosa Bell Deel Cook. She was a member of Little Prater Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Ratliff, in 1963; and her second husband, Claude Helton, on April 5, 1998.
Ms. Helton is survived by one sister, Mildred Cook of Grundy. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Helton was preceded in death by two sisters, Lottie Earls who died on Nov. 15, 1993, and Goldie Vanover who died Dec. 30, 1996; and five brothers, Herbert Cook who died on March 4, 1930, Robert Cook who died on Sept. 2, 1985, Dave Cook who died on Dec. 8, 1985, B.E. Cook who died on April 26, 1989, and Keith who died on Dec. 6, 1989.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Little Prater Church of Christ with Evangelist Michael Trent and Evangelist Mike Rife officiating, with burial to follow in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery at Richlands.
Friends may call at Little Prater Church of Christ after 6 p.m.Friday, and there will be an evening service at 7 p.m.
Active pallbearers will be Richard Bowman, Darrell Cook, Jerry Crouse, Derik Vandyke, Norman Cook, David Cook, Britt Crouse, Robert Dan Cook and Charlie Vandyke.
Honorary pallbearers will be Sandy Duty, Linda Osborne, Helen Johnson, Arthur Vanover and men of Little Prater Church of Christ.

Joan Hensley
ABINGDON - Joan "Joann" Hensley, 85, of 481 Bradley St. died Oct. 17, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a native of Big Rock, Ky., and was a daughter of the late Mythice and Minnie Lewis Harris. She lived in Leslie County, Ky., for 20 years and moved to Bristol in 1937. She earned her license as a licensed practical nurse in 1963, and served as a self-employed home care nurse. She was a member of Nordyke Union Church and attended Benhams Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bryd H. Hensley; and a son, Herman Hensley.
Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Cowan and her husband, Norman, of Bristol Virginia; sons J.L. Hensley and his wife, Frances, of Sevierville, Tenn., and Jerry W. Hensley; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at the graveside at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon in Glenwood Cemetery with Robert E. Jones, Th.D officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 till 2:30 Saturday afternoon at Blevins Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Terry Napier, Todd Osborne, Norman Cowan, Chris Hensley, Glen Cowan, Bill Keith, John Harris and Allen Dixon.

William D. Holloway
NEWTON, N.C. - William Dane Holloway, 65, of 3242 Weidner Road, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Catawba Valley Medical Center in Hickory.
Born June 18, 1937, in Bristol Virginia, he was the son of the late William Claude and Mamie Pauline Brown Holloway. He graduated from Virginia High School in 1955 and Emory & Henry College in 1959, where he was fullback for the 1956-59 Emory & Henry Wasps and a member of Sigma Iota fraternity. He did graduate work at the University of Tennessee. Mr. Holloway was president of William D. Holloway, CPA, and a member of First Baptist Church in Hickory. He was a member and past-president of the Newton-Conover Rotary Club, where he gave a Paul Harris Fellowship in his son's name, Justin A. Holloway, who died in 1998; a member and past president of Catawba Valley Chapter of NC Association of CPAs; and a member and past-president of the Catawba Valley Chapter of the Institute of Managerment Accountants. He was past treasurer and director of the Catawba Country Club; a former member and associate Sunday school teacher at Calvary Baptist Church in Newton and discussion leader of Bible Study Fellowship. He was on the Board of Driectors of Newton-Conover Council of the Catawba Valley Chamber of Commerce, director and secretary of the Betty and Ken Isaac Scholarship Foundation, Inc. and a member of the Board of Directors for the Newton-Conover Education Foundation, Inc.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Gobble Holloway of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Jay and Julie Holloway of LaGrange, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin H. and Stephen Schuetz of Hillsborough, Calif. four grandchildren, William Garrett Holloway, Matthew Holloway, Michael Schuetz and Hannah Schuetz; and a sister, Anne H. Campbell of Bristol Virginia.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2002, at First Baptist Church in Hickory. The Rev. Pat Pearce will officiate and burial will follow in Eastview Cemetery in Newton.
Pallbearers will be Joe Long, Carl Dwiggins, Joe Sadowski, Ned Jarrett, Ken Isaac and Hamp Lefler. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Bible Study Fellowship and the Newton-Conover Rotary Club.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.

Bobby R. Hopson
DELAWARE, Ohio - Bobby Ray Hopson, 30, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at home.
Born Jan. 19, 1972, in Sandusky, Ohio, a son of Gladys Helton Hopson and the late Eive Hopson, he had lived in Russell County, returning to Ohio two years ago. He was employed as a lineman for New River Electric and was a member of the IBEW, Local 71.
Surviving are his wife, Emily Grace Statzer Hopson; one daughter, Alyssa Hopson of Lebanon; his mother, Gladys Marie Hopson of Lebanon; two sisters, Carol Ann Hopson of Delaware, Ohio, and Pamela Meade of Kingsport; one brother and sister-in-law, Eive Hopson Jr. and his wife, Kathryn Hopson, of Delaware, Ohio; and two special nephews, Scott Hopson and Cody Hopson, both of Delaware, Ohio.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, in Combs Funeral Service Chapel in Lebanon with the Rev. Boyd Coleman and the Rev. Darrell Fletcher officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Elsie Kate Horne
CEDAR BLUFF - Mrs. Elsie Kate Horne, 82, of 4082 Steelesburg Highway died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Buchanan County and was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Rachel Christian Altizer, both Buchanan County natives.
She was a lifelong resident of the Tazewell County area, residing in Steelesburg the past 39 years and was a member of Cedar Bluff Community Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Roy Horne; two sisters; and five brothers. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Survivors are special caregivers, Wanda Stiltner, Creed and Andrea Bryant; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 11 a.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Jerry Casey and Rev. Mike Altizer officiating. Interment will follow in Brown Family Cemetery on Brown Mountain, near Jewell Ridge. Pallbearers will be Eugene Altizer, Johnny Altizer, Jeffrey Horne, Homer Arnold, Mike Mosley, Benny Stiltner, Ron Coleman and Roger Childress. Honorary pallbearers include Bev Honaker, Dr. James H. Twila S. McBride
CEDAR BLUFF - Mrs. Twila Laverne Sluss McBride, 71, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at a Claypool Hill nursing facility following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Tip Top, Va., and was a daughter of the late Wade C. and Audrey Johnson Sluss, both Tazewell County natives.
She was a lifelong resident of the Keen Mountain and Tazewell County areas and was a 1948 graduate of Gary High School. She was of the Methodist faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Marvin E. McBride; one son, Robert McBride; and two brothers, Randall and Carroll Sluss.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Judy Angle and husband, Mark, of Rocky Mount, Va.; four sons, Mr. Marvin McBride and wife, Brenda, of Shinston, W.Va., Mr. Steve McBride and wife, Brenda, of Cedar Bluff, Mr. Greg McBride and wife, Tina, of Paintlick, Va., and Mr. Stanley McBride and wife, Betty, of Danville, Ala.; one sister, Mrs. Darlene Riney of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; six brothers, Mr. Wade Clinton Sluss of Johnson City, Mr. Rufus Sluss of Dublin, Va., Mr. Garnett Sluss of Fincastle, Va., Mr. Orville Sluss of Christiansburg, Va., Mr. Jack Sluss of Pensacola, Fla., and Mr. Kenny Sluss of Tazewell; six grandchildren; and special friend, Cathy Gibson.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with Rev. Roger Lester officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. COEBURN - Mary Ethyline Edwards Minton, 59, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in Holston Valley Medical Center and Hospital, Kingsport. She was preceded in death by a granddaugther, Charlotta Autumn Collins. Surviving are her husband, Jimmy Minton; two sons, James Wayne Minton of Norton and Robert Daniel Minton of Coeburn; six daughters, Anna Elizabeth Edwards Minton of Huron, Ohio, Audrey Marchell Greear, Sonya Laurice Minton and Tonya Denise Minton Lawson, all of Coeburn, Tina Lynn Minton Collins and Heather Louise Minton Mullins, both of Pound; eight granddaughters, Cheyenne Collins, Ciera Collins, Brandy Greear, Savahanna Nicole Minton, Natasha Lawson,Tonya Marie Lawson, Jackie Minton and Britny Sailars; four grandsons, Corey Greear, Joshua Minton, Malchia Lawson and Wesley Minton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Sturgill officiating.Entombment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Elizabeth Pennington
NORTON - Elizabeth Johnson Pennington, 66, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at home.
She was a homemaker, employee of several restaurants in the area as a cook and was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Peggy Ann Johnson; and her parents, Wiley Glen and Ollie Beatrice Vanover Bevins.
Surviving are one son, Jennings Clay Vanover Jr. of Greeneville, Tenn.; three daughters, Kathy Carter Fluce and Mary Vanover, both of Wise, and Rebecca Johnson of Church Hill, Tenn.; two brothers, William George Bevins and Wiley Eugene Bevins, both of Wise; three sisters, Alta Vanover and Pauline Balthis, both of Pound, and Rosie Vanover of Wise; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Special thanks are extended to caregivers, Madonna Bates, Dee Mullins and Bill Bevins.
Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday at Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel, Wise, with Rev. Jack Blanton officiating. Burial will follow in Wise Cemetery, Wise. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Saturday at Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise.
Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise, is in charge of arrangements.
