Rosie J. Meade
RAVEN, Va. - Mrs. Rosie Juanita Meade, 76, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Russell County and was the daughter of the late Lacy and Carrie Shannon Kiser, both Russell County natives.
She had made her home in the Raven area most of her life and was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary McCowan.
Survivors are: her husband, Mr. Fred Meade; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Hubble and husband, Tom of Castlewood and Mrs. Mae Robinson and husband, Garland of Dante, Va.; one brother, Mr. Doris Kiser and wife Tobie of Honaker; two grandchildren, Regina Holbrook and Sherrie Phillips; three great-grandchildren, Amaris Phillips, Isaiah Phillips and Chantel Williams also survive; and one son-in-law, Darrell McCowan of Abingdon.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands with the Rev. Clarence Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Christine H. Powers
Christine Hickman Powers of Bristol Tennessee, died peacefully at home at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002.
Born in Bristol Tennessee, on Jan. 14, 1928, a daughter of the late Tess and Lydia Leonard Hickman, she resided in Maryland from 1956 until returning to Bristol in 1985.
Mrs. Powers was a sales clerk.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Ernest Woodrow Powers in 1999.
Mrs. Powers will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister and for her love of her two dogs, Taz and Princess.
Survivors include her children, Mike Powers of Bristol Tennessee, and Steven Powers and wife Kristen of Oakton, Va.; four grandchildren, Jennifer, Lindsay, Andrew and Kim; two sisters, Hazel Harr and Allie Lark, both of Blountville; and several nieces and nephews.
Committal services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Glenwood Cemetery.
The Rev. Stephen L. Playl will officiate. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the funeral home.

Gladys L. Powers
ABINGDON - A graveside service for Mrs. Gladys L. Powers will be conducted Sunday at 1 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Those attending the service are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Arthritis Foundation-Virginia Chapter, P.O. Box 6772, Richmond, VA 23230.
Mrs. Powers, 85, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in Lake Harris Health Center in Leesburg, Fla.

RICHLANDS - Mr. Byron E. "Pete" Price, 84, passed away Saturday, Nov. 23, 2002, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Mountain Home, Tenn., following a lengthy illness.

Margaret G. Richmond
KINGSPORT - Margaret Gibson Richmond, 83, of Mt. Carmel passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at her home following a sudden illness.
Mrs. Richmond was born in Appalachia on Aug. 1, 1920, daughter of John C. and Anna Holloman Gibson. She graduated from Appalachia High School in 1939, and attended Lincoln Memorial University in 1939 and 1940. Margaret was a former employee of Interstate Railroad office in Andover, Va., and Latimer-Looney Chevrolet Co. in Kingsport. She retired from the Industrial Relations Department of Holston Defense Corporation after 30 years of service.
Margaret was an active member of the Lynn Garden Evangelical Presbyterian Church where she was an organist and pianist for over 30 years until recently.
Mrs. Richmond was preceded in death by her parents, John C. and Anna H. Gibson; two sisters, Rosa Mae Gibson Dunn and Anna June Gibson Reasor; and two brothers, Joseph and Samuel J. Gibson.
Survivors include her husband, T. Ray Richmond of the home; one daughter, (Thyra) Ann Richmond Bowlin and husband Fred at Mt. Carmel; four sons, Thomas R. Richmond Jr. and wife Mary of Charleston, W.Va.,. John Randall Richmond and wife Sharon of Mobile, Ala., Samuel J. Richmond and wife Leslie of Indian Springs, Tenn., and Frank Toby Richmond and wife Vicky of Bluff City; four granddaughters; four grandsons; two great-granddaughters; one great-grandson; two sisters, Mary Ruth Gibson Covey of Culpeper, Va., and Gennie Sue Gibson Tucker of Greensboro, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Oak Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Oak Hill Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jon Schwartz officiating. Graveside services will be held Sunday at 2:45 p.m. in the American Legion Cemetery in East Stone Gap, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lynn Garden Evangelical Presbyterian Church's music fund or the Holston United Methodist Home for Children, Greeneville, TN 37744.

Chester A. Robinette
NORTON - Chester A. Robinette, 80, died Thursday, 21, 2002, in Norton Community Hospital. He was a retired coal miner and member of United Mine Workers of America. He attended West Norton Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 40 years, Ruby Baldwin Robinette; brother Arthur Robinette; sisters Mabel Scott and Gustavia Robinette; and an infant daughter, Priscilla Robinette.
He is survived by wife, Frankie Robinette of Norton; sons Edward and his wife, Sharon Robinette, of Trenton, Mich., Roger Robinette of Lincoln Park, Mich., and Everett Robinette of West Land, Mich.; daughters Glenna and her husband, Cecil Mullins, of Wise, Deborah and her husband, Beldon Fleming, of Big Stone Gap, Iris Stallard of Charleston, S.C., and Gwen Hobbs of Kingsport; brothers Emory Robinette, Cecil D. Robinette and Robert Robinette, all of Norton; sisters Frances Powers and Sandra Lawson, both of Norton; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Glenn Ritchie and Rev. Frances McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.

Thomas E. Slagle
The funeral service Thomas Ensor Slagle will be conducted at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon in the Chapel of Blevins Funeral Home with Rev. Jack Bowery and Rev. Johnny Dillard officiating. The committal service and burial will follow in Mountain Veiw Cemetery with military rites presented by VFW Post 6975 Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Ronnie Price, Rex Gentry, Tommy Webb, Jerry Fricker, Roy Fricker, Roger Fricker and Mike Blair. Condolences may be sent to the family via e-mail at blevins@funeral-plans.com. Mr. Slagle, 78, of 711 College Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House.

Richard M. Summers
ABINGDON - Richard M. Summers, 79, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, John Carlisle and Billie McClung Summers; his brother, John Summers; his second wife, Betty Orr Summers; and his grandson, Brandt Buffington.
He is survived by his daughter, Jean Buffington Gable and her husband, Tony Gable of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two granddaughters, Kacey Buffington of Lawrenceville and Keri Balsamo of Basking Ridge , N.J.; and his sister, Eugenia Summers Phillips of Abingdon.
Mr. Summers was born in Welch, W.Va. He grew up spending the summers in Abingdon until his family moved permanently to Abingdon in 1945. In 1942 he graduated from Riverside Military Academy, Gainesville, Ga., and in 1943 he entered the U.S. Army where he was assigned to Company B, 171st Combat Engineer Battalion, 84th Infantry Division. He served in England and Europe and participated in the Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He was award the American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.
Following his discharge from the Army in 1946, he attended National Business College, Roanoke. After graduation, he moved to Abingdon in 1949. In Abingdon he worked as an accountant for several businesses and for a time was deputy clerk in the Circuit Court Clerk's Office of Washington County.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Tolar Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park with military honors by the Highland Fellowship Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Tony Gable, John S. Phillips, Dr. Thomas Phillips Jr., Stephen Smith, Preston Smith and Hank Grant.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday evening at Campell Funeral Home. Instead of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 136 E. Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210.

Roy C. Thomas
GLADE SPRING - Roy C. Thomas, 76, passed away Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at his residence. He was a life long resident of Washington County, Va., and the son of the late Carson and Myrtle Jones Thomas. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from Raytheon Company after 28 years of service. He was a member of the Liberty Hall Lodge 104 A.F. & A.M. and was a member of the Pleasant View Baptist Church. Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Rhonda Thomas; a brother, Dewey Thomas; and a sister, Olivene Brown.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Doss Thomas; one daughter, Linda C. Wright and her husband Ernest of Damascus; one son, Roy C. Thomas Jr. and his wife Betty of Chilhowie; four grandchildren, Tony Walls, Deena Barron, Kim Thomas and Janet Pennington; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in the Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roger Boyer and Rev. Tommy Tester officiating. A Masonic graveside service will be conducted by the Liberty Hall Lodge 104 A.F. & A.M. at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45 p.m. Monday prior to the funeral service at Garrett Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to the family via e-mail at condolences@garrettfuneralhome.com.

Fannie K. Wilmer
Committal service and burial for Fannie K. Wilmer will be Monday, Nov. 25, at 2 p.m. in the Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg. Honorary pallbearers will be her church family. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the church in memory of Mrs. Wilmer.
Mrs. Wilmer, 89, a former resident of Amy Street, Bristol Virginia, went to be with the Lord Nov. 20, 2002, at NHC Bristol.

James M. Asbury
ABINGDON - Funeral services for James M. Asbury will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood. Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, with full military rites by the Honor Guard from Fort Lee, Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 9 East Church Ave., Roanoke, VA 24011, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tenn., or the charity of the giver's choice. Mr. Asbury, U.S. Army retired, 65, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at his home.

Barbara B. Ault
CLERMONT, Fla. - Mrs. Barbara Anne Booher Ault, 65, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002. Mrs. Ault was born April 12, 1937, in Abingdon, to the late Albert T. Booher and Rachel Hale Booher. She was a homemaker and an accounting clerk. Mrs. Ault was a member of South Lake Presbyterian Church in Clermont.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Ault of Clermont; one son, Edmund T. Ault of Clermont; two daughters, Sara Cahill and Debora Holley, both of Clermont; two sisters, Amelia McConnell of Abingdon and Julia Nelson of Galax; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church. Rev. Robert Tolar will officiate. A private interment will be held at Knollkreg Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Hospice of Lake and Sumter Counties, 12300 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.

Ida Burton
RICHLANDS - Mrs. Ida Burton, age 102, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at a Tazewell hospital.
She was born Jan. 1, 1900, in Pikeville, Ky., and was a daughter of the late Sidney M. and Martha J. Kerley.
Mrs. Burton was one of the rare women to experience the most dynamic 100 years in our country's history. She could recall with remarkable clarity the sinking of the Titanic, The Great War, the Roaring 20's, the Great Depression, World War II, color television, Elvis in the 50's, the turbulent 60's, th first man on the moon, Richard Nixon, the end of the Vietnam War in the 70's, Ronald Reagan, the Space Shuttle in the 80's, the prosperous 90's, and the Millennium celebration in 2000.
As one of her favorite hobbies, Mrs. Burton loved crocheting and quilting. Her family and friends have been the lucky recipients of many of her wonderful blankets over the years. Most of all, she loved spending time with family and friends at her home in Richlands where she lived for 84 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Mr. John D. Burton; an infant son, James; daughter, Hazel; two sons, John and Bill; three brothers; and one sister.
Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Helen Gisi of La Grange, Ga.; one sister, Mrs. Thelma Fair of Fairborn, Ohio; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Burton of Palm City, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Sedora Jane Brown, Barbara Anne Hall, Sara (Sally) Burton, Julie Burton-Sharrard, Terry Cox, Tom Gisi, Susan Hall and Andrea Cosper; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov.16, at 11 a.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands withRev. Donald McClure, the Pastor of the Ridgeview Baptist Church at Stuarts Draft, Va., officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be: Don Vandyke, Claude Barrett, Clyde Barrett, Louis Hunter, Dr. Tommy Bays and Joe McGlothlin.
Honorary pallbearers: Ken Wysor, Dr. Richard Bower, Dr. James McVey, Dr. Ed Moore, Homer Vencill, Bev Honaker, Bill McCall Jr. and Ernest Roisch. Bertha P. Combs
HONAKER - Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Presley Combs will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the Tiller Town Free Will Baptist Church at Council, Va., with Rev. Kyle Ratliff and Rev. Roy Lee Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Frank Smith Cemetery on Big A Mountain, Va.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, sons-in-law and Roger Presley.
Mrs. Combs, 89, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in a Richlands hospital.

Ida Deel
POUNDING MILL, Va. - Miss Ida Deel, 80, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002, at her home following a long illness. Born at Dickenson County, Va., she was the daughter of the late William Riley and Ferbie Bessie Fuller Deel. Miss Deel spent most of her life in the Spruce-Pine section of Pilgrims Knob before moving to Pounding Mill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Roma Kelly, Margaret Deel, Lilly McClanahan and Ellen Cole; and brothers, Audie, Fred, Trinkle and Byrd Deel.
Survivors are sisters, Flora Rife of Pounding Mill, Mrs. George (Gertrude) Ward of Pilgrims Knob and Mrs. Ray (Thelma) Horn of Pilgrims Knob; brother, Arnold Deel of Vansant, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Singleton Funeral Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Brother Andy Deel and Brother Earl Dean Yates of the Old Regular Baptist Church of Jesus Christ officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Randall Jackson, Bradley Moore, Anthony Stilwell, John Spencer, Randy Deel and Lonnie Bailey.
Friends may call at Singleton Funeral Service from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

Naomi Deel
HAYSI --Funeral services for Naomi Deel will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church with Elders Roger Coleman, Freddie Ramey, Earl Dean Yates, Andy Deel, Bobby Davis, Denny Deel, Freelin Yates and Danny Yates officiating. Burial will follow in the George W. Deel Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi. Pallbearers will be deacons of Russell Prater Old Regular Baptist Church.
Mrs. Deel, 77, of Route 2, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at her residence.
