Ruth Ann Wise
LINCOLNTON, N.C. - Mrs. Ruth Ann Wise, 63, passed away Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, in Lincolnton.
Mrs. Wise had lived most of her life in Abingdon and was preceded in death by her parents, Windom and Tiny Powers Davis, and a grandson, Jeffrey Dean Wise Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Cecil Wise, Abingdon; sons, Jeffrey Dean Wise and Richard Allen Wise, both of Stanley, N.C., William Cecil Wise Jr., Iron Station, N.C., and Ernest Lee Wise, Abingdon; daughters, Debra Thomas of Stanley and Melissa Wise Parrish of Iron Station; brothers, Bob Davis and Johnny Davis, both of Abingdon, Roscoe Davis and Ernest Lee Davis, both of Thomasville, N.C., Larry Davis and Steve Davis, both of High Point, N.C., and Lonnie Davis of Stanley; sisters, Jean Thomas, Iron Station, Carolyn Thomas, Concord, N.C., Peggy Davis, Roanoke, Teresa Davis, Thomasville, and Janice Davis, High Point; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, 11 a.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul Price officiating.
Interment will follow in the Kestner-Reynolds Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Virgil Wise, Junior Wise, James Sailor, Robin Jones, David Jones, Shawn Brown and Jason Reynolds.

Eula Mae Wright
NORTON - Mrs. Eula Mae Wright, 79, passed away at home Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, of a sudden massive heart attack.
Mrs. Wright was born in Lincolnton, Ga., married the late Clarence Wright and spent all of her adult life in Southwest Virginia. Eula Mae, a life time member of the Chestnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church, was honored on Aug. 11, 2002, by the entire congregation with a "Eula Mae Wright Day" celebration attended by several hundred admirers. She was recognized as the president of the usher board, a member of Missionary Society, a member of the Hospitality Society and a past member of the Ladies Co-workers Club. Mrs. Wright was known throughout the area for her boundless faith, enduring friendships and overwhelming generosity.
Mrs. Wright is survived by her sister, Kate Love, Baltimore; and many nieces and nephews. Other family members include Mrs. Helen Stallard, Wise, Dr. Richard and Joan Stallard of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, Ann Stallard of Atlanta, Dennis, Rebecca and Brittainy McClelland of Tracey, Calif., and Martin McClelland of Gainsville, Fla. Special friends include Rosann Beaty, Mrs. Yvonne Elmore and Frances McKinney, all of Norton.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, at 2 p.m. at the Chestnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Norton, with Rev. Lowell Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens, Big Stone Gap, Va. The family will receive friends at the Chestnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15, 2002. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Mrs. Wright's memory to the Chestnut Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 237 Kentucky Ave., Norton, VA 24273.

Verlin G. Altizer
ABINGDON - Mr. Verlin Grant Altizer, 77, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Altizer was born on Oct. 3, 1925, in Berwind, W.Va., to his parents, G.H. and Blanche Altizer. He was a 1942 graduate of Tazewell High School and in February 1943, volunteered for the U.S. Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He attended the University of Chicago and the National Trade School in Kansas City, Mo. He was a member of the Shady Grove United Methodist Church, Abingdon.
Verlin spent 50 plus years with the Pocahontas Fuel Company, Consolidation Coal Company and the Pittston Company, retiring in 1988, and then remained a consultant until 1998.
He married Anna Jean Owens on Dec. 17, 1948.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Jean Owens Altizer; his children and their spouses, David and Carol Altizer, Tazewell, Va., Nancy and Buell Cook, St. Louis, Mo., Mark and Ann Altizer, Abingdon and Greg and Kim Altizer, Gastonia, N.C.; his mother, Blanche Altizer, Tazewell; his sisters, Catherine Karnes and Cleo Bradley, both of Tazewell; his grandchildren, Riley Altizer Flynn and husband, John, Leslie Altizer, Grant Cook, Kate Altizer, Corey Altizer, Amelia Altizer and Alexis Altizer.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at 1 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Reverend William Fowler and Reverend Don Watkins officiating.
Entombment will be private.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Ellison Conrad, Jack Chambers, Harold Deitz, Dr. Alan Grantham, Dr. Thomas Johnson, Tyler Nuckols, Dr. William Nuckols, Dr. Emory Robinette, Oscar Vecellio and Robert White.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnston Memorial Hospital Administrative Office, 351 Court St., N.E., Abingdon, VA 24210. (Please mark CCU on your check).
The family will receive friends Friday from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. and immediately following the service on Saturday in the funeral home.

MOUNT CARMEL, Tenn. - Funeral services for Burel Henry Bruner Jr. will be conducted at Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at 8 p.m. with Brother Ronnel Williams officiating. Committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, with military rites by Highlands Fellowship Veterans Honor Guard in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. The family will meet at the funeral home and go in procession to the Cemetery, leaving at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Family will serve as pallbearers.

Donald H. Cloyd, 68, of Bristol Tennessee, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee. Arrangements are incomplete. Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ershal T. Compton
BELFAST, Va. - Mr. Ershal Trudell Compton, 81, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born Nov. 24, 1921, in Jewell Ridge, Va., he was a son of the late William C. and Bessie Corns Compton. He had resided in the Belfast area since 1977 and was a member of the Rosedale Church of Christ. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in World War II. He was a retired security department employee with the Naval Weapon Station at Yorktown, Va.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Crafford Compton of the home; one daughter, Carol Richardson of Richlands; one son, Roger Compton of Honaker; one stepdaughter, Sandra Ramos of Alexandria, Va.; one stepson, William Hunt of Culpeper, Va.; two sisters, Juanita Boyd of Mansfield, Ohio, and Alma Jean Smith of Raven, Va.; one brother, Connell Compton of Swords Creek, Va.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Rosedale Church of Christ in Rosedale, Va., with Evangelist Bart Wynegar and Evangelist Dennis Wimmer officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va.
Pallbearers will be Paul Hurley, Mike Rasnake, Mike Hartley, Jim Simpson, Kenny Taylor, Clinton Hawks, Bill Johnson and Bill Luttrell.
Honorary pallbearers will be Carson Brown, Nelson McGlothlin, Bob Cline, Danny Cline, Andrew Blanche, Charles Horne and Roger Hensley.
Friends may call at the Rosedale Church of Christ after 6 p.m. Thursday.

Floretta B. Deel
OAKWOOD, Va. - Floretta Lynn Bentley Deel, 62 years of age, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at her home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced by Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home of Grundy, Va.

E. A. Evans
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - E.A. (Worry) Evans died at home on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, after an extended illness. Worry, as he was known to his family and friends, was a well-known restaurateur having been one of the founders and owners of the Mt. Vernon Restaurant in Chattanooga since 1955.
He attended Ridgedale Baptist Church and had been a member of the Covenant and the Word Sunday School Classes.
He was the son of the late Mildred Hillman Evans and Emery Gilbert Evans. Worry was born in Herald, Va., and had lived in Coeburn and St. Paul, Va., but had spent the last 55 years of his life in Chattanooga. He attended Baylor School in Chattanooga and graduated from Elizabethton High School in Elizabethton, Tenn. He attended Tulane University, the University of Kansas and the University of Chattanooga.
He served as president of the Chattanooga Restaurant Association for two years and he also served as a director of the Tennessee Restaurant Association. He also was an active member of the National Restaurant Association.
Mr. Evans was an avid golfer having been a member of the Rivermont Golf and Country Club and the Chattanooga Golf and County Club. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Navy aboard a patrol craft boat as a 2nd class motorman. He had been stationed off the coast of Australia and off the island of Guadalupe during the war.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Tombras Evans.
He is survived by his second wife, Barbara Elliott Evans, Chattanooga; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Jeff Messinger, and granddaughter, Hannah Messinger of Lookout Mountain, Tenn. He is also survived by three brothers, D.C. Evans of Bristol Virginia, Chet Evans of Bristol Tennessee and Sib Evans of Chattanooga; also four sisters, Val Lee of Tucson, Ariz., Uneeta Wrenn of Newport News, Va., and Lee Kyle and Faye Elswick of Bristol Tennessee; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Evans' wish was that his body be donated to the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 12:20 p.m. at Ridgedale Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Owens officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Ridgedale Room. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Society for Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Woodhome Medical Building, Sutie 515, 1838 Green Tree Road, Baltimore, MD 21208 or to Ridgedale Baptist Church Building Fund, 1831 Hickory Valley Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421 or to Hospice of Chattanooga, 58 Commons, Suite 101, 4355 Highway 58, Chattanooga, TN 37416.

Naomi I. Farmer
Graveside services for Naomi Irene Farmer will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mrs. Farmer, 83, passed away Dec. 9, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Charles W. Fogleman
HONAKER - Mr. Charles William "Cotton" Fogleman, 71, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born Sept. 9, 1931, in Belfast, Va., he was a son of Lula Fogleman of Lebanon and the late Kelly Fogleman. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1952 graduate of Honaker High School. He had served in the U.S. Army and was a retired electrician. He attended Valley View Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Sue Keene Fogleman of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Donna Fogleman of Lebanon; three grandchildren, Jessica Fogleman Monk, Jason Fogleman and Carlie Fogleman; one great-granddaughter, Emily Monk; one sister, Mae Reynolds of Moundsville, W.Va.; and one brother, Hubert Fogleman of Bristol Virginia.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Kenny Taylor officiating. Entombment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Friends may call at the Honaker Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

RICHLANDS - Mr. Carl Fuller, 71, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in a Richlands hospital following a long illness.

Graveside services for Mary M. Garman will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, in Susong Cemetery.

Mrs. Garman, 99, of Bristol Virginia, passed away at 11:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Funeral service for Virginia Gardner Goins will be 2 p.m. Thursday at the East Lawn Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in the garden of the Mausoleum of the East Lawn Memorial Park. Condolence may be sent via email at elawnfuneralhome@aol.com.
Mrs. Goins, 81, of Bristol Tennessee, and formerly of Church Hill, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, in the Cambridge Health Care Center.

Russell G. Harris
Russell Gardner Harris, 89, of Bristol Virginia, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at his home.
He was born in Stovall, N.C., a son of the Jackson Greene Harris Sr. and Nellie Henry Harris. He was a former grocery store manager for Colonial Stores in Richmond and Virginia Beach, a salesman for Taylor and Sledd Food Brokers in Richmond, worked for Association of Combined Insurance of Bristol and was proprietor of the Army and Navy Surplus Store in Bristol Virginia. Mr. Harris was a member of Frist Baptist Church, Traveler's Protective Association and was a life member of the B.P.O. Elk's Lodge. He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Harris, who was a professional organist associated with local bands and who was the organist for horse shows throughout the Tri-Cites area. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold Harris, Jackson G. Harris Jr. and Clinton G. Harris.
He is survived by a daughter, Gayle Harris Stevens of Bristol Virginia; a sister, Nell Wilkinson of Richmond; two granddaughters, Alicia S. Angle and her husband Chad of Hummelstown, Pa., and Rebecca Crawford and her husband, Steve of Bristol Virginia; two great-granddaughters, Madison Angle and Abigail Crawford; two nieces, Myra W. Jennings of Virginia Beach, Va., and Maxine H. Francisco of Richmond; and several other nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 o'clock Friday morning in the chapel of Blevins Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Paul Hamilton Fuller IV officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold and Carol Rhea, Chad Angle, Steve Crawford, Jack and Eleanor Heacock, Becky and Bob Ingram, and Marie and Brandon McConnell. Reba Jean Jackson
Funeral services for Mrs. Reba Jean Jackson will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Richlands Tabernacle in Richlands with Rev. Ralph Horton, Rev. Bob Osborne and Rev. David Horton officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Matthew Shafer, Larry Blevins, Arnold Shepherd, Earl Richardson, John Shepherd and Joseph Shepherd. Honorary pallbearers will be Ira Jackson Jr. and Clell Mullins.
Mrs. Jackson, 67, of 816 Pennsylvania Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at a Bristol Tennessee hospital following a lengthy illness.

Bobby H. Kestner
DAMASCUS - Mr. Bobby Harold Kestner, 62, died Tuesday at Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native of Damascus, Mr. Kestner worked as a machine operator in the furniture business. He was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include two sons, Tim Kestner and Randy Kestner, both of Granite Falls, N.C.; one daughter, Denise Miller of Claremont, N.C.; two brothers, Doug Kestner and Roger Kestner, both of Damascus; three sisters, Anne Kestner of Glade Spring, Linda Prunner of Bristol Tennessee and Brenda Kestner of Randleman, N.C.; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Farris Funeral Chapel. Bill Hamm will officiate. Interment will follow in Old Glade Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Morrison, David Kestner, Henry Kestner, Chris Kestner, Bruce Kestner and Sam Kestner. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Richard R. King
RURAL RETREAT, Va. - Richard Randall King, 83, passed away Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at his home surrounded by his family.
Born on Dec. 10, 1918, to the late Floyd Crockett King and Mary Elizabeth Jones of Crockett, Va. Mr. King was a life-long resident of Wythe County, a long-time business partner with the late Chester H. Bowling of Bowling Motor Company of Rural Retreat. He was a World War II veteran proudly serving his country as a Navy seaman first class from January 1944 to December 1945. He was also a faithful member of the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church and an active member of the American Legion Post 229. He was preceded in death not only by his parents, but a brother, James S. King of Rockett, who was killed in active duty during World War II.
A loving father and husband, Mr. King is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha J. (Orr) King; his children, James Richard King and wife Regina of Blacksburg, Va., and Mary Elizabeth King of Appomattox, Va.; special friend, Janet Moses of Appomattox, Va.; three grandchildren, Richard Keith King and his wife Jenny of Atlanta, Michael Todd King and his wife Teresa of Abingdon and Elizabeth Christine King of Roanoke; five great-grandchildren, Austin and Kyle King of Atlanta, Chelsea King of Roanoke and Corey and Carrigan King of Abingdon; one sister, Dr. Martha K. Neate of Richmond; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Jenkins and the Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Interment will follow in the King's Grove Cemetery in Crockett with military honors being conducted by Marion V.F.W. Post 4667.
Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lindsey Funeral Home. The family will receive friends and family at the King residence Wednesday evening during visitation at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to the Rural Retreat United Methodist Church.
The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the Rural Retreat Hospice, Tiffany Fisher, RN, and all the wonderful care givers, especially Beverly Holbrook and Grace Wright and gave their time and care to Mr. King during his illness.
