RICH VALLEY, Va. - Roger L. "Block" Hawkins, 56, died Monday,. Dec. 9, 2002, at his home. Survivors and funeral arrangements will be announced by Seaver-Brown Funeral Service.

Betty Hendershot
Betty Sue Parks Hendershot, 66, of 1021 East State St., Bristol, Tenn., passed away Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late James and Violet Travis Parks and had been in the Bristol area since 1975, returning from Maryland. She was a former convenient store worker and was a member of the Salvation Army Church.
Survivors include: husband, JohnW. Hendershot Sr.; sons, John W. Hendershot of North Augusta, S.C., and James M. Hendershot of Bristol Tennessee; daughter, Kathy Marion of Bristol Tennessee; sister, Jean Goforth of Blountville; brothers, Tommy Parks of Bristol Tennessee, Ronnie Parks of Bristol Tennessee and Gary Parks of Bristol Tennessee; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted onWednesday at 2 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jacqueline Oxendine officiating. Interment will follow at MountainView Cemetery. Pallbearers include: JohnW. Hendrshot Jr., James M. Hendershot,Wayne M. Kistner, Tommy Kistner, John Mullins and John Mutter. Honorary pallbearers will be brothers-in-law. Evelyn L. Herron
JASPER, Ga. - Evelyn L. Herron, 91, died on Dec. 8, at the Grandview Health Center in Jasper. She had been a long time resident of Bristol and was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church before moving to Georgia in 1993 to be near her children. Mrs. Herron was preceded in death by her husband, Mack C. Herron.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Harry Gilmer of Big Canoe, Ga.; her son and daughter-in-law, John M. Herron and Donna Leonard Herron of Hartwell, Ga.; four grandchildren, Jennifer Gilmer Muse and husband Wayne Muse of Jackson, Miss., Kelley Gilmer Whitaker and husband Scot Whitaker of Jackson,Tenn., and Chad Herron and Krista Herron, both of Atlanta; and two great-granddaughters, Lauren Elizabeth Whitaker and Emily Ann Whitaker of Jackson.
The funeral service will be conducted at the Chapel of Memories at Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol Tennessee, on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Harry W. Gilmer officiating.

Jackson C. Hudson
MARION - Jackson C. Hudson, 81, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a loyal and devoted member of Marion Baptist Church. He owned and operated Hudson Jewelers and Hudson Wholesale in Marion for many years. Mr. Hudson was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Martin Hudson. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jack Allen and Susan Hudson of Bristol Virginia; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Roger Fitchko and Cindy and Ed Stringer, all of Marion; and Teresa Hudson of Germantown, Md.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Peggy Martin Owens; two nephews; and special care givers, the Bobbitt family. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Carlton Blankenship and Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Gardens in Rural Retreat, Va. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel. Seaver-Brown Funeral Service is serving the Hudson Family.

Reba Jean Jackson
Mrs. Reba Jean Jackson, 67, of 816 Pennsylvania Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at a Bristol Tennessee hosptial following a lengthy illness.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands.

Charles W. Jones
ROANOKE - Charles William Jones, 81, of 1116 Marlian Ave., NW, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, at Lewis Gale Medical Center. He was born May 13, 1921, in Bristol, a son of the late Charles and Bina Ragan Jones, and was a former resident of Bristol and had made his home in Roanoke for the past 30 years.
Mr. Jones was a U.S. Army D-Day veteran of World War II, former employee of Bristol Steel and Iron Works and Hennis/Spector Freight Lines. He also worked for Heironmus Department Store.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Jones; two daughters, Linda Jones and Louella Burnette and her husband Oscar; son, Charles Jeffrey Jones Sr.; five grandchildren, Teresa Cooper, Thom Burnette, Tony Jones, Nathan Witt and Charles J. Jones Jr.; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Glenwood Cemetery with The Rev. Stan Anderson officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975. Online condolences may be sent at www.weaverfuneralhome.net.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:20 p.m. Wednesday at the Mausoleum Chapel.

Raymond M. Massengill Jr.
Dr. Raymond McClellan Massengill Jr., 64, of Bristol Tennessee died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in Johnson City. He was a son of the late Raymond McClellan Massengill and Mary Louise Myers Massengill of Blountville.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Harriette Hargreave Massengill; two sons, Raymond McClellan Massengill III and his wife Mary of Franklin, Tenn., and Andrew Myers Massengill and his wife Mary of Naperville, Ill.; two daughters, Kim Massengill Seibert and her husband Ken and Debbie Massengill Cornett and her husband Mark, all of Louisville; 10 grandchildren; one sister, Mary Louise Massengill Jordan of Atlanta; and one brother, Myers Newton Massengill and his wife Jan of Bristol Tennessee.
He earned his bachelor of science (B.S.) degree from the University of Tennessee, the master of science (M.S.) degree from the University of Tennessee, and his doctorate of education (Ed.D) from the University of Virginia.
Dr. Massengill was the assistant dean and director of medical education for both Bristol Regional Medical Center and HolstonValley Medical Center for East Tennessee State University, James H. Quillen College of Medicine and professor surgery-otolaryngology and member of the Department of Communicative Disorders. He was a charter member of the James H. Quillen College of Medicine. Prior to that, he served as associate professor of Medical Speech Pathology, Division of Plastic, Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery, Duke University Medical School in Durham, N.C., from 1971 until 1977, and as director of Medical Speech Pathology, Department of Surgery, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, N.C., from 1964-1973.
Dr. Massengill's professional accomplishments include his serving on the Medical School Dean's Council, 1977-present, Education Development Committee, Bristol Regional Medical Center and East Tennessee State University College of Medicine, 1977-present, member, Institutional Committee on Graduate Medical Education, 1992-present, his Bristol Regional Medical Center involvements include the Medical Student and Resident Review (chairman), 1977-present, Continuing Medical Education Committee, 1977-present, and Medical Grand Rounds (chairman and coordinator)1986-present. He was a member of the Association for American Medical Colleges, Association for Hospital Medical Education, Association for Surgical Education, American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and American Cleft Palate Association.
A few of his honors include Fellow, American Speech and Hearing Assocaition, 1969; Sixth Annual Duke Symposium on Orofacial Anomalies named in honor of Raymond Massengill Jr; twice apponted by the Governor of the State of Tennessee to the Tennessee Developmental Disabilties Council, Oct. 3, 1990 - June 30, 1997, and twice appointed by the Governor of the State of Tennessee to serve on the Board of Communication Disorders and Sciences, Tennessee Department of Health, February of 1998 to present. Dr. Massengill has published 71 articles in various medical jounals and has presented 132 papers at medical conferences. He was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the A.C. Adams Sunday School Class. He was past president of the Kiwanis Club of Bristol and served on the Board of Trustees of Rocky Mount Museum.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 o'clock Tuesday evening at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon Turnbull officiating.The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:45 p.m. in the church parlor prior to the funeral. The committal service will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to First Presbyterian Church, 701 Florida Ave., Bristol, TN 37620. . Roy Lee Owens
HONAKER - Mr. Roy Lee Owens, 64, passed away Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in a Bristol Tennessee hospital. Born Nov. 1, 1938, in Russell County, he was a son of the late Coy and Irene Harris Owens. He had lived in Honaker for the past year, moving there from Richmond. He was a retired supervisor with Phillip Morris.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Roger Owens.
Survivors include three daughters, Connie Mundie of Surry, Va., Donna Owens of Newport News, Va., and Holly Owens of Abingdon; one brother, Dan Owens of Bristol Tennessee; and three grandchildren, Ryan Owens, Tiffany Mundie and Kaitlyn Mundie also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. Clyde Lambert officiating. Interment will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery at Lebanon.

George F. Patrick Jr.
The funeral service for George F. Patrick Jr. will be conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at Central Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Wadsworth officiating. Private committal and burial will follow in Knollkreg Memorial Park in Abingdon. Honorary pallbearers will be employees and associates of George F. Patrick and Co.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Bristol Heart Association, c/o Mary Davis, P.O. Box 544, Bristol, VA 24203-0544.
Mr. Patrick, 73, of Lee Garden, Bristol Virginia, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at his residence. Arrangements especially for Mr. Patrick have been made through Blevins Funeral Home.

Billy Joe Scarberry Jr.
RICHMOND - Funeral services for Billy Jo "Little Red" Scarberry Jr. will be held in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel in Castlewood, on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Donald Page officiating. Committal services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. The family will meet at the funeral home and go in procession to the Cemetery, leaving at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Masons will serve as pallbearers.

William E. Simpson
POUNDING MILL, Va. - Mr. William E. (Bill) Simpson, 77, passed away Sunday, Dec. 8,. 2002, at his home following a short illness.
Born in Tazewell County, Va., he was the son of the late Edgar Walden and Mattie Lou Brewster Simpson. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and was wounded in Normandy and was a P.O.W. He served in the military police in Washington, D.C. He was a member and elder of the Pounding Mill Christian Church where he previously served as Sunday School superintendent. He was a life member of the Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Post 9640 and Tazewell County Chapter 31 D.A.V. where he served many years on the Honor Guard.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis Simpson and George A. Simpson.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Izona Baldwin Simpson; one son, Jim Simpson and wife Vicky of Rosedale, Va., one daughter, Sandra Kay Jackson and husband Larry of Richlands; one sister, Margaret Elizabeth Brewster of Newhall, W.Va.; three grandchildren, Melanie Simpson of Knoxville, Sherry Graf of Richlands and Derrick Jackson of Radford; four great-grandchildren, Laura Graf, Kayla Graf, Sydney Jackson and Erynn Jackson.
Special thanks to Tazewell Community Hospital staff, Dr. Stephen Rinehart and Dr. Karen Hughes.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in the Singleton Funeral Servcie Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Lance West officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va., where military graveside rites will be conducted by Casey-Shortt V.F.W. Bessie Smith, 83, of Bristol Virginia, died Sunday,Dec. 8, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a life long resident of Bristol Virginia and had been a homemaker all her life. She was a member of Old Airport Road Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Mildred Ann Hopson of Bristol Tennessee; one son, Samuel Steven Smith of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Chad Creger of Kings, N.C., and Isaac Smith and Abby Smith of Atlanta; and four foster children, Phyllis Gott and J.W. Smith, both of Bristol Virginia, Raymond Smith of Johnson City and Betty Booher of Bristol Tennessee. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Sherfey and Rev. Lee Lambert officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Larry Smith, Hoover Smith, Jeff Curbey, Lynn Sherfey, Jeff Booher and Richard Reed. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

CLEVELAND, Va. --Funeral services for Mr. Billy Darrell Stevens will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Evangelist Mike Trent and Evangelist James Lane officiating. Interment will follow in the Johnson Cemetery on Combs Ridge.

Mr. Stevens, 52, passed away Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital.

Gent Stoots Jr.
LEBANON - Gent (Buddy) Stoots Jr., 69, of Green Valley, died Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, in the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol.
Born Aug. 13, 1933, in Russell County, he was a son of the late Gent and Viola Warner Stoots. He was a 1954 graduate of Lebanon High School and attended the University of Maryland. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the artillery and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he was a flight engineer on a C-119 flying boxcar aircraft. He retired as chief jailor for the Russell County Sheriff's Department with 12 years of service.
He was a member of the Cedar Creek Baptist Church, the U.M.W.A., and AFL-CIO Pipefitters, Boiler Makers and Electricians.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Marie Stoots; a sister, Gaynell Stoots; and a brother, Jimmy Stoots.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Nancy Alexander Stoots; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rhonda and Bobby Tompa Jr. and Rita and Darryl Jones, all of Lebanon; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gregory and Sheila Stoots, Lebanon and Michael and Lori Stoots, Belfast; nine grandchildren, Amber Jones, Angel Tompa, Amanda Jones, Ashton Stoots, Alex Tompa, Ariel Tompa, Coy Gent Stoots, Andy Stoots and Cole Stoots; a special great-granddaughter, Dara King; three brothers, Bobby Stoots, Plainfield, Ind., Billy K. (Beaver) Stoots, Bristol Virginia and Harry Lee (Butch) Stoots, Avon, Ind.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, in the Combs Funeral Service Chapel with the Revs. Carlyle Carter, Danny Rhea, Buster Clark and Donnie Musick officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Lebanon V.F.W. Post 9864 will follow in Russell Memorial Cemetery. Nephews and church friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be special friends, Trigg Fields, Randy Williams, Phillip Puckett, Mike Bush, Thelmer Wallace Jr., Dr. Dwight Bailey, Matt Sykes and employees of the Russell County Sheriff's Department. The family will receive friends 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2002, at the funeral home.

Anna Brown Triplett, 76, passed away on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, at Bristol Nursing Home. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a former machine operator at Tri-State Corporation.
There are no known survivors.
Graveside services will be conducted on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Sunrise Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
