Baxter O. Neece
CLINTWOOD - Baxter Oley Neece, 105, formerly of Trammel, died Nov. 18, at Heritage Hall.
Born in the Bear Ridge Section of Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Elijah and Margaret (Peg) Neece. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Pearl Johnson Neece; his son, Carson Neece; and two daughters, Glenna Kiser and Neva Neece.
He attended Trammel Baptist Church and was a member of the Methodist church at the Bear Ridge School where he was baptized in 1935. He was formerly employed by Ritters Lumber Company, Hall Coal Company, Bostic Coal Company and the WPA.
Surviving are two sons, Oscar Neece, Trammel and Arby Neece, Florrisant, Mo.; daughter, Effie McMillan, Newport News; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Dyers Chapel Church in Stratton with Jeremiah Sluss officiating. Burial will be in the Neece Cemetery, Bear Ridge Section.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be great-grandsons.
The body will be taken to the church at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, where a song service will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Tina G. Rush
Tina Garrett Rush, 34, of Bristol Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and was a member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church.
Survivors include: daughter, Rachel Rush; son, Dillon Huggard; mother, Margie Buchanan of Bristol Tennessee; father, Jerry Garrett of Bristol Tennessee; maternal grandmother, Mable Ramsey Clark of Bristol Tennessee; paternal grandmother, Rosalee Garrett of Bristol Tennessee; sister, Karen Carrier of Bristol Tennessee; brothers, Chad Garrett of Bristol Tennessee, Shane Garrett of Bristol Tennessee, and Cody Garrett of Bristol Tennessee; stepbrother, David Stevens of Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Rowlette officiating. Committal services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Eastern Heights Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 6-8 p.m. at Weaver Funeral Home.

Ida Mae Rutledge
Ida Mae Rutledge, 81, of Bristol Tennessee, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at the Wellmont Hospice House. She was born in West Jefferson, N.C., and had lived in the Bristol area most of her life. Mrs. Rutledge was a homemaker, the widow of William "Bill" Rutledge, and was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Survivors include: three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Junior Worley, Glade Spring and May and Bill Barr and Bonnie and Fred Barr, all of Bristol Tennessee; nine grandchildren and spouses: Billy and Lori Barr, Tina and Allen Stevens, Joe and Kathy Barr, Freddie Barr, Chris Barr, Ron and Melba Worley, John and Sheila Worley, Don and Sarah Worley and Goldie and Charles Fletcher; eight great-grandchildren, Anthony, Kaylee, Cheyenne, Jordan, Cody, Tyler, Dustin and Randall; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Pauline Gross and Sue Lockhart.
Funeral services will be conducted at noon Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, in the Rooty Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Phil Kestner and Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Alberta H. Smalling
Alberta Hill Smalling, 96, formerly of Bristol Tennessee, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, in Fayetteville, Ga. She was the widow of George R. Smalling and was a former member of Central Christian Church. She was retired from the H.P. King Company where she worked for 30 years. She had remained active and enjoyed walking and spending time with her friends and neighbors.
She is survived by two daughters, Dottie Davis of Fayetteville and Patsy Mance of New York City; her granddaughter, Gina Marie Davis of Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service and interment will be conducted at 11 o'clock Friday morning in Glenwood Cemetery with Mr. Roy Hampton, minister, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the South Fayette Presbyterian Church or Southland Nursing Home in Peachtree City, Ga.
Arrangements especially for Mrs. Smalling have been made through Oakley-Cook Funeral Home.

Elizabeth P. South
ABINGDON - The funeral service for Mrs. Elizabeth Polly South will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Farris Funeral Chapel with Rev. Thurman Chapman, Rev. Ronnie Booher, Rev. Bobby Briggs, and Rev. Clayton Reynolds officiating.
Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Bob Sterns, J.T. Martin, Eddie Briggs, Tony Briggs, Eugene Holley, Donald Clifton, Timmy Holley and J.R. Horn. Honorary pallbearers will be Abe Hurt, Dave Gibson, Junie Moore, Kenny Moore and Wayne Holland.
Mrs. South, 61, went to be with the Lord, Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at her residence.

Joanna Kelly Surber
ABINGDON - Mrs. Joanna Kelly Surber, 49, died Wednesday in Bristol Tennessee. Arrangements are incomplete at this time but will be announced by Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon.

Curtis B. Vanover
KINGSPORT - Curtis B. Vanover, 71, passed away Thursday, Nov. 14, 2002, at his home.
He was a retired master sergeant, a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Air Force and was a retired employee of Tennessee Eastman of Kingsport. He was of the Freewill Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sullivan M. and Cosy Jane Belcher Vanover; and two brothers, Ray Vanover and Joseph Vanover.
Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Vanover of Kingsport; two brothers, Robert Vanover and Jack Vanover, both of Wise; three sisters, Trula Hensley of Indianapolis, Gay Hall of Marion, Ind., and Jean Stanley of California; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Thursday at Sturgill Funeral; Home Chapel, Wise, with Rev. Gene Jennings officiating. Entombment will be held at noon Friday at East Lawn Funeral Home Cemetery, Kingsport, with military rites being conducted by American Legion Post 3 of Kingsport and 265 of Gate City.
The family will receive friends 5 p.m. until time of services at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sturgill Funeral Home, Wise.

Wavilinia C. Wagner
CASTLEWOOD - Wavilinia Couch Wagner, 72, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at home.
She was born in Dante and was the daughter of the late Homer and Lucy Kate Elam Couch. She was preceded in death by two sons, Jeffery and Jackie Hughes; and one sister, Frances Palmer.
She is survived by two daughters, Joann Freeman of Coeburn and Jeannie Kay Chaffin and husband Freddie of Castlewood; one son, Mike Hughes and wife Glenda of Cleveland, Va.; two brothers, William Couch and wife Doris of Lebanon and Paul Couch and wife Sue of Kingsport; one sister, Brenda Dye and husband Riggie of Church Hill, Tenn.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, on Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tommy Elam and Pastor Mickey Sexton officiating. Pallbearers will be Gene Couch, Clyde Bush, John James, Ted Collins, Jackie Hughes, Tony Davis, Tim Sutherland and Bo Payne.

Maxx E. Wyatt
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - Maxx E. Wyatt, 42, of 2921 Ionis Lane, passed away on Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at his home. He was born in Bristol, he was 1979 graduate of East High School and a 1988 was a graduate of Emory & Henry College. He had made his home in Richmond area for the past 20 years. He was a dairy inspector for the Virginia Department of Agriculture.
He is survived by his parents, Claude and Ruby Wyatt of Bristol Tennessee; three brothers, Ricky, Rex and Tony; two sisters, Rebecca Baratta and Peggy Buck; maternal grandmother, Juanita Hooker; devoted friend, Mike Dunphy; two nieces and two nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jess Neal officiating. Burial will be in the Wyatt Cemetery. Stella H. Broeske
MARION - Stella Hawks Broeske, 97, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Frederick William Broeske.
Born March 1, 1905, in Rural Retreat, she was a daughter of the late Isaac and Sarah Hawks. She was a retired nurse, lifetime member of VFW and a member of First United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Major Ralph Wiliam Broeske.
She is survived by a daughter, Helen B. Snavely of Marion; her devoted dog and companion, Fausty; six grandchildren, Bill Broeske of Seattle, Lynn Inboden of Spanaway, Wash., Joseph W. Snavely Jr. of Huntington, W.Va., Connie J. Snavely of Lynchburg, Eva I. Sexton of Chilhowie and Wendy L. May of Marion; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Marion.

Katrina J. Cartmell
BLACKFORD, Va. - Funeral services for Mrs. Katrina Gail Justice Cartmell will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sunday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Rev. T.R. Stump and Rev. Roger Lester officiating. Interment will follow in Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery at Richlands.
Pallbearers will be Peter Mulky, Danny Hankins, Mike Harris, Kevin Justice, Lynn Justice and Jeff Justice.
Mrs. Cartmell, 41, of the River Mountain Road section, passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at home.

Margaret H. Godsey
JOHNSON CITY - Margaret Hart Godsey, 71, of 1504 Linden St. died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at her residence.
She was a native of Washington County, having lived in Johnson City since approximately 1968. Mrs. Godsey is the daughter of the late Earl and Pearl Keith Hart.
She was retired, having worked at Leon-Ferenbach Inc. Mrs. Godsey was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member of the ladies auxiliary. She was also a member of Home League.
Mrs. Godsey was preceded in death by her husband, David R. Godsey, and two sons, Greg and Tony Godsey.
She is survived by one daughter, Jean McGeorge of Johnson City; one son, Michael Godsey of Lebanon; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at Morris-Baker Funeral Home North Chapel at 8 p. m. Monday. Rev. Kenneth Grindstaff will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6 until 8 p.m. Graveside services and burial will be at Monte Vista Burial Park, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery. Wanda S. Hambrick
Wanda Snead Hambrick, 83, of Grand Court died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at NHC of Bristol. She was born in Smyth County, a daughter of the late Randolph and Gertrude Poston Snead, and was the widow of John William Hambrick. She was an active member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church and the Stonewall Jackson Elementary School PTA. Prior to retirement, she served as a secretary at Black Diamond Enterprises.
Survivors include a daughter, Betsy Belew and her husband, Sam, of Bristol Tennessee; a son, Sam Hambrick and his wife, Cathy, of Marion; seven grandchildren Beth Belew, Patty Belew, Matthew Hambrick, Zach Hambrick, Ann Shannon, Page Hambrick and Chaney Hambrick; one great-grandson, Chris Shannon; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday evening in the chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home with Dr. Bob Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-7:45. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday morning in Russell Memory Gardens in Lebanon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Euclid Avenue Baptist Church. The family offers special thanks to the staff of Grand Court. Helena W. Hewitt
CHESAPEAKE - Helena Waters Hewitt, 78, of Broad Bend Circle, Chesapeake, died Sept. 27, 2002, in Chesapeake General Hospital after a long and heroic battle with cancer.
Mrs. Hewitt was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lee Waters Sr. of Konnarock. She was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. A. Kenneth Hewitt Jr., and two brothers, Garland B. Waters of Konnarock and William G. Waters of Weaverville, N.C.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter, A. Kenneth Hewitt III and his wife, Diane, of Atlanta; Owen Lee Hewitt and his wife, Kathy, of Virginia Beach; and Lisa Hewitt Mayo and her husband, Reed, of Virginia Beach. Also surviving are grandchildren Cherie Hewitt Cable and Alicia Hewitt Canestra of Northern Virginia, Brittany Hewitt, a student of Vandervbilt University in Nashville and Andrew Hewitt, Jason Mayo and Hunter Mayo of Virginia Beach; four great-grandchildren, Tiffany and Lee Cable, Kaylie and Kyle Canastra; two brothers, Thomas Lee Waters Jr. of Bristol; R. Mitchell Waters of Chilhowie; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hewitt graduated from Konnarock High School as valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Marion Junior College Phi Theta Kappa and received her bachlelors degree in education from George Mason University as a reading specialist. Mrs. Hewitt spent 30 years teaching in the public schools of South Carolina and Virginia. During her tenure, she received a number of recognitions and honors, one of which was being selected as one of the most outstanding teachers of Prince William County. After retiring from the Prince William County School System, she has made her home in Chesapeake. She was a member of Apostles Lutheran Church and served as chairperson of the Social Ministry Committee, the Fellowship Committee and a member of the Congregational Council.
She will be remembered as a compassionate, generous and giving person and will be greatly missed.
The body has been designated for donation to medical science.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Saint Matthew Lutheran Church in Konnarock, by the Rev. Paul Henderickson of Roanoke College and Rev. Will Robertson.
In lieu of flowers, it is requested that memorial gifts be made to the American Cancer Society, Apostles Lutheran Chruch, Saint Matthew Luthern Church, Konnarock Road, Damascus or to a charity of choice.

Julius M. Kabanek
Julius M. Kabanek, 85, died Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, in Wellmont Hospice House. Born in Binghamton, N.Y., on April 25, 1917, to the late Victor and Mary Drapach Kabanek, moving to Bristol in 1998 from Norwich, NY. He was a retired major from the U. S. Army Engineer Division, serving in World War II. He also was a retired engineer from IBM.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, being preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Victor Jr., Bill and Joe Kabanek.
He is survived by his wife, Gladys Kabanek, one son and daughter-in-law Richard and Elizabeth Kabanek of San Jose, Calif.; two grandchildren, Robert Kabenak and his wife, Robin, and Susan Kabanek.
Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30 at Bristol Seventh-day Adventist Church, with Pastor Todd Leonard officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service. The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to Bristol Seventh-day Adventist Church, 571 Highway 126, Bristol, TN 37620, or to Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steels Road, Bristol, TN 37620. Jack W. Kent
ABINGDON - Jack W. Kent, 81, of 385 Moringdale Drive died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, at his residence.
He was a native of Hazard, Ky., who moved from Logan County, W.Va. to Abingdon almost 20 years ago. He was a graduate of Matewan High School in Matewan, W.Va., where he won the West Virginia State Tennis Championship. Jack received a degree in engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, where he competed in track and field.
He served in the U. S. Navy as a fighter pilot in World War II. He served with the U. S. S. Bennington Air Group 82. He received a Gold Star in lieu of a Fourth and Fifth Air Medal and he received a Permanent Citation for his work in World War II. He was involved in two mid-air collisions in the service. He was a member of Buffalo Mining and was retired Surface Superintendent withPittston Coal Co. in Lorado, W.Va. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
He was preceded in death by his father, O. T. Kent, his mother, Olivene Kent, his wife, Rebecca Kent and a son-in-law Charles Lloyd.
Survivors include three daughters, Jacqualine Bott and husband, William, Dottie O'Quinn and Susan Lloyd, all of Abingdon; one son Tom Kent and wife, Carla, of Abingdon; one sister, Susan Marvin of Marietta, Ohio; two grandchildren, Joe Waters II and his wife, Angie, and Jack E. Kent; and four nieces and four nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, Abingdon, with the Rev. Dr. Steven W. Pollard officiating. Military honors will be provided by Highlands Fellowship Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service. Friends may also visit at his residence (385 Morningside Drive) or call at (276) 628-5709.
