Beatrice Lorain Davis Morrison, 97, of National Health Care Center of Johnson City died Friday, May 10, 2002, in NHC of Johnson City.
Mrs. Morrison was formerly of Blountville, a member of First Baptist Church of Blountville and was preceded in death by her husband, J. Earnest Morrison; two daughters, Joyce Richards and Lois Wampler; her son Hoyett E. Morrison; and a grandson, Richard Richards.
Mrs. Morrison is survived by one daughter, Beverly Steudler of Manchester, N.J.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2002, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Shelton Lewis officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002, in Tri-Cities Memory Gardens. Edna Darlene Nelson
Edna Darlene Nelson of Bristol, Tenn., died Friday, May 10, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House.
She was the daughter of the late Vernon and Nina Offield Dodson. She was a retired registered nurse and was a member of Charity Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Amy J. Gauvreau; grandsons Michael and Donovan Gauvreau; sisters and brothers-in-law, Glenna and Richard Schmidt of Sumter, S.C., Gladys and Herschel Cook of Bristol, Tenn., Mary Ellen Dodson of Bristol, Tenn., and Verna Mae and Harold Ayres of Dayton, Ohio; brothers and sisters-in-law, Vernon and Iris Dodson of Bristol, Tenn., and Lawrence and Rita Dodson of Morristown, Tenn.; foster mothers Sylvia Neal of Nashville and Linda Lewis of St. Charles, Mo.; foster brother Richard Neal of Knoxville; stepmother Georgia Dodson of Definance, Ohio; special friends, Ellis Hopson of Coeburn and nursing staff and doctors of Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center where she was a retired surgical R.N.
Memorial services will be held Monday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dale Greenwell officiating. The family will receive friends Monday from 6-8 p.m. prior to the service. Private committal services will be held Tuesday at Rooty Branch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wellmont Hosopice House, 280 Steele's Road, Bristol, TN.

Walker Raines
HAYSI - Walker "Mousy" Raines, 72, was called home to be with his Savior Friday, May 10, 2002, at Buchanan General Hospital, Grundy. Born Aug. 9, 1930, in Dickenson County, he was the son of the late Jason and Martha Owens Raines and had resided in the Haysi area all of his life. Walker was a U.S. Army veteran of the Koran War and a retired miner and member of UMWA Local 7170. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, papaw and a special brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Farley, Fred, Junior, Thurman, Garmon, Carl and Warren Raines; and one sister, Ledna O'quin.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his loving wife of 50 years, Jackie Yates Raines; two daughters and sons-in-law, Vickie and Charles Viers and Kim and Blane Owens, all of Vansant; three granddaughters, Heather Viers and fiance, Jody Bowman, Kelly Lowery and husband, Bob, and Mandy Renee Boyd; two sisters, Fannie Woods and Faye Wampler, both of Haysi; two half-brothers, Don Raines of Clintwood and Jerry Raines of Newport News; one half-sister, Georgie Veggian of Detroit; three great-grandchildren, Dylan Lowery, Hayley Boyd and Emily Bartley; and special friends at Haysi Pharmacy, especially Linda Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2002, at Haysi Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Sluss officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson-Owens Cemetery, Birchleaf, Va. American Legion Post 164 of Grundy will conduct military graveside rites. Pallbearers will be Jerry Taylor, Jody Bowman, Bob Lowery, Jessie Yates, Mike Wampler and Snake Woods. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Woods, Gary Raines, Dr. Puri, Dr. J. Patel, Jill Viers Matney and Dylan Lowery. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at Haysi Funeral Home, where a song service will be held at 7 p.m.

Robert Lee Rhymer
Robert Lee Rhymer, 81, a lifelong resident of Bristol, Tenn., passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was a former truck driver for Robinson Freight Line of Kingsport. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rhymer.
Survivors include daughter, Mrs. Phillip (Linda) Tranum of Bristol, Tenn.; sons Terry Rhymer of Bristol, Tenn., and Randy Rhymer of Columbia, S.C.; grandchildren Jennifer Rutter of Blountville, Melanie Rhymer of Bluff City, Jason Tranum of Valdosta, Ga., and Robert Rhymer of Columbia; and great-grandchildren, Brent and Ashley Baker.
He was preceded in death by sisters Bertha Pickel and Maggie South; and brothers Clyde Rhymer, Charles Rhymer, Clinton Rhymer and Arthur Rhymer.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Monday in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jess Neal officiating. Jack Sawyers Sr.
McCLURE, Va. - Jack Sawyers Sr., 85, passed away at home Friday, May 10, 2002.
Born in Carroll County, Va., he was preceded in death by his son, Jack Sawyers Jr.; his foster parents, Jane and Otis Smith; his parents; two brothers; and one sister. He lived most of his life in Dickenson County and was of the Baptist faith. He was retired from Clinchfield Coal Co. and was a veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Alice N. Sawyers; one son, Leo T. Sawyers of Castlewood; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dimple and Vic Arrington of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Jennifer and R.L. Wallen of Kingpsiort; five grandchildren, Shannon M. Sawyers, Joshua S. Sawyers, Matthew E. Wallen, Miranda S. Sawyers and Jessica M. Wallen; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 13, 2002, at Mullins Funeral Home Chapel, Clintwood, with Rev. Manie Strouth and Rev. Danny Sluss officiating. Burial will follow in Temple Hill Cemetery, Castlewood.

DANTE - Phyllis Taylor, 63, died Friday, May 10, 2002, at home.
She was born in Dante, daughter of the late Ben and Trula Meade Baker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Harold Taylor; and one sister, Lois Baker Bowman.
She is survived by two daughters, Debra Taylor of Bristol, Tenn., and Kimberly Greer and husband, John, of Dante; one son, Jimmy Taylor of Dante; two sisters, Kay Frances Long of Lebanon and Peggy Mann of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Valerie Taylor and Joshua David Greer; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, with Rev. Leonard Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Pallbearers will be members of the Freebirds Motorcycle Family. Honorary pallbearers will be Jock Fields, Roger Taylor and Tim Taylor.

TANNERSVILLE, Va. - Mr. William Charlie "Bill" Taylor, 64, died Saturday, May 11, 2002, at home.

Lula Van Huss
Lula Emmerson May Van Huss, 85, of 384 Old Stage Drive, Bristol, Tenn., passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Elbert and Frances Sheets May and was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area. She was a former employee of Big Jack Manufacturing and was retired from Imperial Reading. She was of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Guy Van Huss Sr.
Survivors include her daughter, Shirley Van Huss of the residence; sons Charles Van Huss of Blountville and Guy Van Huss of Bristol, Tenn.; brother Jack May of Bluff City; sisters Delcie Cregger of Knoxville, Vernie Lowe of Detroit and Blanche Hoss of Detroit; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James May of Indiana.
Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at Glenwood Cemetery with Rev. Richard Carmody officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday from 6-8 p.m. The family would like to say a special thanks to Dr. Schrenker and Dr. Brockmyre and their staffs and to Lee Rasnake of Wellmont Hospice House. Helen VanDyke
RAVEN, Va. - Mrs. Helen Virginia VanDyke, 80, of Route 1 passed away Friday, May 10, 2002, at home following a brief illness.
Born at Stacy, Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Myrtle Reedy Keen. She was a member of Levisa Assembly Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, John (Bert) VanDyke; one infant son, Glen Clinton VanDyke; one daughter, Eunice Virginia Jackson; and four half-brothers, Flem, John, Bascom and Albert Keen.
Mrs. VanDyke is survived by two sons, Burton Willard VanDyke and wife, Margaret, of Route 1, Raven, and Elmer Willard VanDyke and wife, Rosanna, of Route 1, Raven; four daughters, Mrs. Hassell (Vonda) Davis, Mrs. Hershel (Phyllis) Keen, Mrs. Dora Ann Shelton, all of Short Gap, Va., and Mrs. Charlie (Karen) Monk of Route 1, Raven; two brothers, Andrew Keen of Florida and Cecil Keen of South Carolina; two sisters, Alta Mae Price of Cedar Bluff and Nadine Deskins of Route 1, Raven; one half-sister, Leona VanDyke of Glade Spring; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a host of friends; and a special care giver, Erma Jean Jones also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002, in Buchanan Funeral Service Chapel at Keen Mountain, with Revs. Ancil Childress, Eddie Wilson, James Horton and Jessie Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill. Pallbearers will be grandsons.

William Anderson
KINGSPORT - William Edward Anderson, also known as "Buckwheat", 39, passed suddenly at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center of a massive heart attack, Oct. 6, 2002.
William was a graduate of Gate City High School, Gate City. Buckwheat was a loving, kindhearted person to all who knew him. He will sorely be missed by all.
He was born in Greene County, Tenn., June 18, 1963, and was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Walter and Maggie Anderson; and maternal grandfather, John Anderson.
He is survived by his parents, Joe and Thelma Anderson, Gate City; six daughters, Alexandria, Gate City, Tameka and Kashanna, both of Church Hill, Tenn., Shyanne and Tekiesha, both of Kingsport, and Annita, Bristol Virginia; one son, Zachary, Gate City; maternal grandmother, Lula S. Anderson, Greeneville, Tenn.; brother and sister-in-law, Tyrone D. and Julie Anderson, Jonesborough, Tenn.; sister, Sharifah Anderson, Gate City; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Brother Nathaniel Johnson, Pastor Wayne Rader and Brother Steve Merriweather. Music will be provided by Willie Anderson.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Tri-City Memorial Gardens, Blountville.
The family will be meeting at 10 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Billy Ray Branson
WYTHEVILLE - Billy Ray Branson, 70, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at his home. He was born in Russell County on Aug. 3, 1932, a son of the late Robert Ray and Emma Mabel Branson. He was a U.S. Army first sergeant in the Corps of Engineers having served from 1949-56, including the Korean Conflict. Early in his professional life, Branson was a miner for Clinchfield Coal Co. in Dante. After an accident that injured both his legs, he went to Steed College in Johnson City where he earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He then went to work for the Mount Rogers Planning District Commission as a planner in 1972. He was hired as county administrator of Wythe County in 1977, where he served until his retirement in 1996. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Wytheville Oddfellows Lodge and American Legion Post No. 9. He had coached both Youth League baseball and soccer and was an avid bridge player. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernice Taylor.
He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Naff Branson of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Timothy and Kathy Branson of Bluff City, William and Kathy Branson of Bristol Tennessee, Christopher and Wanda Branson of Richmond and Robert Branson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Darst and Russell Guest of Lyman, S.C., and Charlene and Stephen Wheeler of Floyd County, Va.; two brothers, Kirk Branson of Kingsport and David Branson of Blountville; and two sisters, Nanie Smith of Coeburn and Thelma Couch of Castlewood.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the St. Paul Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Donald Stansell and the Rev. Dr. William Rodgers officiating. Interment will follow in the West End Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post No. 9. The family will receive friends at the Barnett Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

William J. Carson
William Jerry Carson, 64, of 8409 Loretta Lane, Bristol, Va., died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at his home.
Mr. Carson was a retired employee of Lowe's after 20 years of service and a member of El-Shaddai Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father and extra-loving grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth C. Carson. His mother, Sue Carson of Wilkesboro, N.C.; two daughters, Laura Howard of Bristol Virginia, and R. Nadean Carson of Altus, Okla.; one son, William Jerry Carson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla.; three sisters, Betty Sue Wilson of Fayetteville, N.C., Pat Anderson of Moravian Falls, N.C., and Jean Wagner of Jacksonville; one brother, James E. Carson of Moravian Falls; four grandsons, Blake Carson Howard, Austin Grant Howard, William Jeremy Carson and Justin Thomas Carson; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9,. 2002, in El-Shaddai Baptist Church 20263 Haskell Station Road, Bristol, Va., with Pastor Ken Osborne officiating. Arthur M. Davis
SHORTT GAP, Va. - Mr. Arthur McKinley (Bob) Davis, 84, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at his home following a long illness. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Sam and Celia Short Davis. He was a retired coal miner with Red Jacket Coal Co. and a farmer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Davis and Olbert Davis; and two sisters, Nonia Horn and Garnie Boyd. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation.
Mr. Davis is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Toy Georgie Sisk Davis; three sons, Jack Davis and wife Sue of Route 1, Raven, Va.,. James Davis and wife Kathy of Route 1, Swords Creek and Kennith Davis and wife Dana of Route 1, Swords Creek; one daughter, Mrs. Russell (Carol) Horne of Route 1, Cedar Bluff; four grandchildren, Michael Horne, Jamie Davis, Chad Davis and Rick Davis; and one great-granddaughter, Macie Horne.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, in the Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Mike Altizer and Rev. Carl Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Cemetery at Claypool Hill, Va. Sarah Jane Deel
HAYSI - Sarah Jane Deel, 76, of Route 2, passed away Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Dickenson County, she was a daughter of the late Ebb and Eura Blankenship Fuller. She was a homemaker and of the Old Regular Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chris Deel; and seven brothers, Herby, Clyde, Claude, Donald, Foster, Dewey "Buck" and Perry Fuller.
Survivors include two sons, Darrell Deel and Jessie Darrell Deel, both of Haysi; six daughters, Caroline (Tom) Mullins of Haysi, Arbutus (Bill) Brown of Marion, Ohio, Audrey (Vincent) Haynes and Versie (Weldon) Wells, all of Clintwood, Georgia Street of Richlands and Dedra (Tony) Spafford of Haysi; two brothers, Jerry Fuller of Haysi and Thomas Monroe Fuller of Tazewell, Va.; three sisters, Betty Deel of Haysi, Susie Fuller of Hollister, Fla., and Roxie Hobbs of Logansport, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Eddie Newsome and Andy Deel officiating. Burial will follow in the Blankenship Cemetery, Route 2, Haysi. Grandsons and sons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8, and Wednesday, Oct. 9, where a song service will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and an evening service at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Sylvia B. Harris
MARION - Sylvia B. Harris, 83, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, in Brien Center Health and Rehab in Durham, N.C. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Harris. She lived in the Marion and Atkins area all her life until April of 2001, when she moved to Cary, N.C., to be near her granddaughter and her family. She attended Atkins Church of God and was actively involved there until recent years. Mrs. Harris was the fifth child of a family of 10 children. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Thelma M. and Donald A. Harris of Redmont, Wash.; one sister, Lucille Clark of Maryland; one granddaughter, Nola Boezeman and husband John; one grandson, Larry W. Byrum; two great-grandchildren, John and Matthew; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel with Rev. Ida I. Henderson
SALTVILLE - Mrs. Ida Irene Henderson, born June 13, 1920, died at her home Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002. She was the daughter of William C. and Sally F. Taylor and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors: her husband of 56 years, Thomas W. Henderson; daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and James Worley, Saltville; grandson and fiancee, James C. Robinson and Rachel Adams, Saltville; granddaughter and husband, Cynthia and Brian Ward, Saltville; great-grandchildren, Guston Robinson, Zachary Barrett and Danielle Ward, all of Saltville; three sisters, Hazel Dalley, Wheeling, W.Va., Marilyn Barnard, Saltville and Mrs. J.S. "Tazoni" Surber, Saltville; special friends, Norma Gobble, Patsy Owens and Joyce Testerman; and several nieces and nephews
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Henderson Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Mumpower and Rev. Woodrow McIntrye officiating. Interment will follow at Elizabeth Cemetery. Pallbearers will be James C. Robinson, Brian W. Ward, John McGlocklin, Patsy Owens, T. Michal Taylor and Hunter Johnson. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. The family would like to extend special thanks to Dr. Stephen Hanor, the nurses and staff of Wellmont Home Health and David Mumpower.

Mary Fern Hillman
CLINTWOOD - Funeral services for Mary Fern Hillman will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Haysi Funeral Home with Rev. Luke Wright and Rev. Joe Glenn Sluss officiating. Burial will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Mrs. Hillman, 86, of Route 1, passed away Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at her residence.
Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Bradley S. Hoskins
MADISON HEIGHTS, Va. - Bradley Sewell Hoskins, 87, 145 Scotts Mill Road, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, in Lynchburg, Va.
He is survived by his wife; four daughters; two brothers; and 11 grandchildren.
Graveside service will be conducted 1 p.m. Wednesday in Gunnings Cemetery.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Charles H. Johnson
POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. - Charles Herbert (Herb) Johnson, 73, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2002, at Holzer Medical Center in Gallipolis, Ohio. He was a retired project engineer at Kaiser Aluminum in Ravenswood, W.Va. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Point Pleasant, a graduate of Emory & Henry College, worked in the city engineering department in Roanoke and was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in World War II, 509th Bombwing Division, Strategic Air Command, at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, N.M. Born in Saltville, he was a son of the late Floyd and Maude Leonard Johnson.
Surviving are his wife, Regina Allison Johnson; two daughters, Cathy Rollins of Point Pleasant and Martha McNemar of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a sister, Helen Johnson of Marion; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Oct. 4, 2002 in Point Pleasant.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, 615 Viand St., Point Pleasant, WV 25550.
Crow-Hussell Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, was in charge.

John J. Mullins
MANASSAS, Va. - John Joseph Mullins, 37, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Prince William Hospital, Manassas.
He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Nokesville, Va. Mr. Mullins was a 1984 graduate of Patrick Henry High School, Emory, Va., and was very active in the community doing volunteer services. He was a self-employed plumbing contractor "John's Home Improvement" in Manassas.
Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly Elizabeth Mullins of St. Leonard, Md.; two sons, Jonathan Rockwell Mullins and Christopher Matthew Mullins, and their mother, Dianne Musick, all of Fairfax, Va.; his mother, Margaret Mullins of Manassas; his father and stepmother, Bill and Stephanie Mullins of Glade Spring, Va.; two brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Mullins of Bealeton, Va., and William Cline Mullins of Manassas; paternal grandmother, Oma Mullins of Glade Spring; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and a host of friends.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center St., Manassas, where funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002, with Pastor Leo J. DeLorge officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
