Edison Lee Puckett
CLEVELAND, Va. - Edison Lee Puckett, 67, passed away Monday, May 6, 2002. He was born Sept. 7, 1934, and was of the Pentecostal faith. A lifelong resident of Russell County, he was the son of the late Clyde and Nannie Dye Puckett.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Puckett; daughter Vickie Cole of Lebanon; stepdaughters Cheryl Adams of Christiansburg and Barbara Lester of Lebanon; five sons, Lee Puckett and Dwayne Puckett, both of Abingdon, Lewis Puckett of Honaker and Vincent Puckett and Patrick Puckett of Brandywine, W.Va.; sister Doris Puckett of Lebanon; brother Thomas Puckett of Salisbury, Md.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 9, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Owens & Farmer Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Ralph Younce officiating. Interment will follow at Ketron Memorial Gardens, Lebanon.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 8, after 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

John Wayne Shifflett
ST. PAUL - John Wayne Shifflett, 27, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon. He was a lifelong resident of Damascus and had lived in St. Paul since March of this year. He was preceded in death by his mother, Delores Blakenship Shifflett; and his grandparents, Dub and Gertrude Wright. Mr. Shifflett was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Dreas Shifflett of the home; father and stepmother, Wayne and Martha Shifflett of Damascus; half-sister, Tabitha of Oklahoma; stepbrother, John Revils of Dewitt, Ark.; brother-in-law, Stephen Dreas of Tullahoma, Tenn.; several aunts and uncles; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2002, in Garrett Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. R.J. Cullop officiating. RICHLANDS - Mr. I.C. "Turk" Shortridge, 87, of 206 Lee St. died early Tuesday morning at a Richlands hospital following a brief illness.

Alys M. Sikorski
EMORY - Mrs. Alys M. Sikorski died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at Grace Healthcare Center. She was born in New Haven, Conn., and graduated with honors from Yale University School of Music. She moved to Virginia in 1950 when her late husband, Ludwik Sikorski, became head of the music department at Emory & Henry College.
The following years were filled with teaching and performing. The Sikorski's presented an opera each year with Emory & Henry students, ranging from Gilbert and Sullivan to Bizet's "Carmen." They founded and co-directed the Highlands Chamber Orchestra, which was active for more than 30 years.
Alys and Ludwick were awarded the William and Martha DeFriece Award for service to humanity at Emory & Henry's 1985 commencement exercises. Many of Alys' students have become teachers, continuing her desire to share her love of music with the world.
She is survived by her daughter, Pravda Bauer and son-in-law, Michael Bauer of Emory; and her granddaughter, Antonetta Bauer of Emory.
A memorial service will be conducted Monday, May 13, 2002, at 2 p.m. in Emory United Methodist Church with Rev. David St. Clair officiating. The family will greet friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sikorski Memorial Fund, c/o Emory & Henry College, Emory, VA 24327.

Richard Watson
A memorial service for Richard Lewis "Rick" Watson, 58, who died Sunday, May 5, 2002, will be conducted at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, May 11, 2002, in Harrison-Jones Memorial Hall on the campus of Virginia Intermont College. Dr. Robert Rainwater will conduct the service. Rick was the loving husband of Rebecca M. "Becky" Watson of Bristol, Tenn. He was a son of Walcott Watson of Knoxville and the late Shirley Kiernan Watson. Rich is also survived by his sister, Patricia Watson Waring of Farragut, Tenn.; two brothers, Robert Watson of Tampa, Fla., and David Watson of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; his brother-in-law James Waring of Knoxville; his sisters-in-law Michele Watson of Tampa and Lorraine Watson of Oak Ridge; his nephew Mark Waring of Knoxville; his nieces Jennifer Jackson of Knoxville and Sarah Waring of Farragut; his cousin Mrs. M.R. Bennett of Oak Ridge; his grand-nieces and nephew Kori, Hailey and Will Jackson of Knoxville. Rick also leaves many close friends including Ed and Jean Stead of Unicoi, Tenn., and Dan and Jo Spangler of Leighton, Ala.
Rick was born in Utah and grew up in Oak Ridge. He graduated from Oak Ridge High School, earned a bachelors degree in education from Radford University and a masters degree in education from East Tennessee State University and was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Professional Fraternity in Education. He taught for 10 years in Bristol, Va., and two years in Johnson City. During his teaching career, Rick helped shape the lives of many young people, instilling in them the importance of hard work and a love for the English language, reading and mathematics.
Rick served with distinction in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1962 until 1968. He rose to the rank of sergeant E-5 and served two combat tours in the Republic of Vietnam. While in Vietnam, he served as a gunner on a gunboat in the Mekong River. He was seriously wounded in combat during his tour in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart. Despite his wound, he re-enlisted and volunteered to return to Vietnam for his second tour.
Rick was an avid reader, storyteller and thespian. He performed in productions of Dracula, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Nutcracker and the Real Inspector Hound, and he could often be found telling tales in the swapping pit in the Natonal Storytelling Festival.

Evangeline Blevins
GREEN COVE, Va. - The funeral service for Evangeline Blevins will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Green Cove Baptist Church, Green Cove, with the Revs. Charles E. "Jody" Blevins and Mr. Brent Fiedler, ministers, officiating. The body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. The committal service and interment will be private. Pallbearers will be Elmer Lee Ours, James "Sonny" Buchanan, Kyle "Eddie" Bleivns, Tracy Proffitt, Lester "Gale" Baldwin and Shawn Trivette. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond "June" Wingler and Frank Buchanan.

Lannie S. Boling
Lannie Katherine Shaffer Boling, 78, of 2217 Bradley St., Bristol, Va., died Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, born May 7, 1923, and the daughter of the late Joe and India Shaffer. She was a retired employee with Valleydale Packers with 28 years of service and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include three children, Fred A. Boling, Charolette J. Honaker and Jerry F. Bolling, all of Bristol, Va.; two grandchildren, Robin L. Honaker and Jerry F. Boling II; three great-grandchildren, Derrick L. Honaker, Shonda Danniell Reedy and Brittany Boling, all of Bristol; sister, Edith Leslie of Kingsport; and brother, the Rev. Kenneth Shaffer of Bristol, Tenn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2002, at the graveside in Mountain View Cemetery with Pastor David Wilson officiating. Pallbearers will be Bill Gillispie, Derrick Honaker, Wayne Honaker, James Fidel and Jerry F. Boling II. The family would like to give a special thanks to the third floor staff at Johnston Memorial Hospital and Dr. Squires. Anna Mae Burkett
MARION - Anna Mae Burkett, 85, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Francis Marion Manor.
She was born in Broadford to the late James Ryburn and Cosby Catherine Patrick. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Burkett and had worked as a dietician at Chippenham Medical Center in Richmond.
Survivors include two daughters, Geneva Harris of Richmond and Wanda King of Warsaw, Va.; one son, Roger Burkett of Richmond; one sister, Carrie Patrick of Marion; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday from Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Interment will follow in Ridgedale Cemetery in Rich Valley. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the fuenral home. Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the Burkett family.

William Dye
LIVE OAK, Fla. - Mr. William Burton "Bill" Dye, 68, of Live Oak, Fla., formerly of the Raven, Va., area, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in a Florida hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Princeton,W.Va., and was a son of the late William Al and Lakie C. Dye.
He was a boatswain mate in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, was a line gang foreman for Western Union, supervisor for Burnup and Sims Construction Co. and retired with 19 years of service as a forest ranger with the Florida Division of Forestry.
Survivors are his wife of 40 years, Mrs. Florence Seat Dye; two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Deese of Mt. Dora, Fla., and Mrs. Sandra Lashley of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; one son, Mr. Buford Lashley of Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla.; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Graveside services will be condcuted Monday at noon at Horton Family Cemetery on Horton Ridge near Raven, with Rev. Dennis White officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Live Oak Christian Church, N. Ohio Ave., Live Oak, FL 32064, or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1431, Live Oak, FL 32060.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

GLADE SPRING - The funeral service for Mrs. Polly Eades Fitzgerald will be conducted Saturday, April 6, 2002, at 3:30 p.m. at the graveside in Old Glade Presbyterian Cemetery with Pastor Stephen Turner officiating.
Pallbearers will be Gene Price, Sam "Hoppy" Lamie, James Crabtree, Brad Crabtree, Robert S. Miller and Jason Wright.

Zelma Mae Gilbert
JONESVILLE, Va. - Zelma Mae Gilbert, 87, of the Wallen's Creek community, went to be with the Lord Friday, April 5, 2002.
She was a charter member of Wallen's Creek Covenant Chruch and was very active as long as her health permitted. She also was a charter member of Lee County Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, W.C. (Cam) Gilbert and Ressie C. Gilbert.
Survivors include one sister, Hattie Helbert of Bristol, Va.; two brothers, Vestal Gilbert of Jonesville and Glen Gilbert and wife, Zelda, of Stickleyville, Va.; foster daughter Kathy Laws of Woodway, Va.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 6, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Sturgill Funeral Home in Pennington Gap.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. at Sturgill Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Mark Anderson officiating.

COEBURN - Laura Elkins Goins, 83, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Holston Valley Medical Center. She spent most of her life in Dickenson County and was a member of Georges Fork Old Regular Baptist Church and was also a member of Order of Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Barthel Goins; one daughter, Avinelle Goins Brown; and one son, Randall Ray Goins.
She is survived by one daughter, Kay Goins of St. Cloud, Fla.; two sons, Bradley Goins and Gregory Goins, both of Clintwood; two sisters, Virginia Potter of Westland, Mich., and Lorena Frazier of Ocala, Fla.; one brother, Frank Elkins of Ashland, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchilden.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Mullins Funeral Home Chapel, where a song service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friends may also call Sunday, April 7, 2002, after 2 p.m. at Georges Fork Old Regular Baptist Church. James C. Gordon
CASTLEWOOD - James C. Gordon, 50, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
He was born in Dante, was a 1970 gradaute of St. Paul High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Marines.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Gordon of Castlewood; one son, Timothy Gordon of Spartanburg, S.C.; his parents, L.C. and Ramona Gordon of St. Paul; five sisters, Donna and husband, Michael Collins, of Staunton, Va., Barbara and husband, Jim Holbrook, of Dante, Wanda and husband, Earl Carter, of St. Paul, Marisa and husband, Bobby Osborne, of Castlewood and Janet and husband, Darrell Johnson, also of Castlewood; one brother, David and wife, Barbie Gordon, of Charlotte, N.C.; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel in Castlewood with the Rev. Bill Slemp officiating. Interment will follow in Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

Frances J. Johansen
Frances June Johansen, 71, of Bristol, Tenn., went to be with the Lord, Thursday, March 4, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was a native of Rural Retreat, and daughter of the late Carl H. and Hallie Lambert Bedwell. She had lived in the Bristol area for 68 years. She was a homemaker, was of the Methodist faith and was preceded in death by Virgil Johansen.
Survivors include her sister, Peggy Shepherd of Bristol, Tenn.; brother Douglas Bedwell and his wife, Beverly, of Bristol, Tenn.; and special niece, Kimberly Kestner of Gray, Tenn.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2002, at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery with Pastor Jack Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Weaver Funeral Home.

Rachel Ellen King
BLOUNTVILLE - Rachel Ellen King, 89, of 385 Seneker Lane went to be with the Lord, Thursday, April 4, 2002, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Sullivan County, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Alice Leonard. She was a homemaker and attended Bethany Bible Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted King; and a son, Howard King.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Jess Cross; son Ray King; son and daughter-in-law Paul and Phyllis King; grandsons Barry King and Dwane Burdine; granddaughter Tonya Little; two great-granddaughters, Hannah King and Taylor Little; and very best friend, Mildred Leonard.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002, in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Zimmerman officiating. The committal will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Leonard, Brian Leonard, Darrin Leonard, Mike Williams, Eric Barb and Jeff Little. Elmer Lee
OAKWOOD - Elmer Lee, 67, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Keen Mountain. Born in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late Jennings Lee and Alice Fields Lee Darnell. He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a member of the Church of Christ. A former member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows No. 17 of Grundy, a retired police officer for the Town of Grundy and deputy for Buchanan County Sheriff's Department.
He is survived by three daughters, Vickie Marlene Lee of Moses Lake, Wash., Alethia Ann Stiltner of Maxie, Va., and Tiffany Allison Michelle Lee of Columbus, Ohio; one son, Wesley Elmer Lee of Honaker; two sisters, Gertrude Stiltner of Grundy and Ollie Kennedy of Richlands; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday, April 8, 2002, at 1 p.m. at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Bill Boyd and the Rev. Eddie Wilson officiating, with burial to follow in Esau Rife Cemetery on Keen Mountain near Keen Mountain.
Friends may call at Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. with services Saturday and Sunday evenings at 7 p.m.

Elmer E. Mullins
AMONATE, Va. - Mr. Elmer E. (Moon) Mullins, 85, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2002, in a Tazewell hospital following a long illness. Born Dec.17, 1916, in Dwight, Va., he was the son of the late James and Rebecca Jane Church Mullins. He was a retired coal miner and a mmber of the UMWA. He was a World War II veteran and was of the Pentecostal faith.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Willow Eileen Perry Mullins; five brothers; and two sisters preceded him in death. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family in his generation.
Mr. Mullins is survived by one daughter, Linda J. Barnett of Richlands; one son, James Wendel Mullins Sr. of Salem, Va.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 8, 2002, in Singleton Funeral Service Chapel in Cedar Bluff with Rev. Sam Altizer officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Memory Gardens Cemetery at Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
The family will receive friends at Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff from 6-9 p.m. Sunday.

Willie "Bill" Newberry
HAYSI, Va. - Willie "Bill" Newberry, 91, of Route 2 passed away at his residence Wednesday, April 3, 2002. A lifelong resdient of Dickenson County, he was a son of the late John and Florence Cochran Newberry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Fuller Newberry; a grandson, Ronald Chad Newberry; and several sisters and brothers. Mr. Newberry was a Jehovah's Witness and a retired coal miner.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Charles Ratliff of Haysi; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Dean and Donna Newberry of Haysi; grandchildren, Debra Clevinger, Paula Ehlers, Sonja Wickham, Norma Kay Gilbert, Wesley Paul Newberry and Cynthia Kay Childress; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rosa Bennett of Troy, Mich., and Bess Ramsey of Johnson City.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder Terry Short officiating. Committal will be at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, at a later date. Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Childress, Charles Timothy Clevinger, David Ehlers, Mike Wickham and Immanuel Gilbert. A visitation will be held at Haysi Funeral Home Friday, April 5, from 5 to 9 p.m. with an evening service at 7 p.m.

CLINTWOOD - Funeral services for Zella G. Rakes will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2002, from Tarpon Freewill Baptist Church with ministers Jerry Robinson and Jerry Vitatoe officiating. Burial will follow in Sykes Cemetery, Tarpon. Pallbearers will be friends and neighbors. Honorary pallbearers are deacons of the church. The body will be taken to the church one hour prior to services Saturday.
Mrs. Rakes, 84, died at Bristol Regional Medical Center Wednesday, April 3, 2002.

CASTLEWOOD - Cecil C. Sexton, 86, died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Russell County Medical Center in Lebanon.
He was born in Castlewood, the son of the late Henry and Lula Mae Kiser Sexton. He was preceded in death by a son, William Bobby Sexton; one sister, Trula Jessee and two brothers, Bill Sexton and Gene Sexton.
He is survived by is wife, Katherine Sexton; three daughters, Mrs. Stuart "Bessie" Keith of St. Paul, Mrs. Hubert "Peggy" Meade of Castlewood and Mrs. Robert "Edna" Statzer of Castlewood; 13 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, April 7, 2002, at 8 p.m. in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel in Castlewood with Rev. Lester Sexton and Rev. Darryl Baker officiating. Committal service will follow Monday, April 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood. Pallbearers will be Gene Keith, Johnny Keith, David Statzer, Teddy Meade, Eddie Meade and Josh McReynolds.The funeral procession will leave the fuenral home at 10:30 a.m. to go to the cemetery.
Family will receive friends Sunday, April 7, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Castlewood Funeral Home in Castlewood or any time at the home of Hubert and Peggy Meade of Route 2, Castlewood. Castlewood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
