Ralph C. Stevens
HONAKER - Mr. Ralph C. Stevens, 84, passed away early Saturday morning, March 23, 2002, in a Lebanon hospital. Born July 10, 1917, in Buchanan County, he was a son of the late John B. Floyd and Phoebe Sutherland Stevens. He had lived in the Honaker area for the past 35 years. He was a member of the Church of God for 50 years and a faithful member of Honaker Church of God, where he had served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and a trustee.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers; three sisters; and two grandsons, Randy McKinley Barton and Robert Farley Barton. In his generation, he was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Survivors include his loving wife of 23 years, Pauline Stevens of the home; three daughters, Gertrude Stevens Barton of Bee, Va., Phyllis Jean Stevens Duncan of Gate City and Audrey Stevens Miller of Honaker; five sons, Connor Stevens of Gate City, Chalmer Stevens of Crescent City, Fla., Jimmie Stevens of Bristol, Va., Ted Stevens of Loveland, Colo., and Lonnie Stevens of Bee; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one special nephew and his wife, Chalmer and Roma Rasnake; and two special friends, Monte and Judy Elswick.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, with Pastor Larry Brooks and Rev. Harless Hess officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill.
Pallbearers will be the following grandsons: Connor Jr. Stevens, Roger Wesley Barton, Ricky Allen Stevens, Dr. Scott Miller, Anthony Yul Miller, Vincent Lee Miller, Christopher Ralph Stevens and Eric Ray Stevens.
Honorary pallbearers will be ministers of the church.
Friends may call at Hoanker Funeral Home after 6 p.m. Sunday.

Russell Tate
ELIZABETHTON - Russell Tate, 81, formerly of Cedar Avenue, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at Pine Ridge Care Center, Elizabethton, following an extended illness. A native of Scott County and former resident of Mendota, he had resided in Elizabethton since 1972. He was the son of the late Henory and Minnie Booker Tate. He was a retired farmer and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Vermillion; an infant sister, Ruth; and a special friend, Lillie Williams.
Survivors include two brothers, Ernest L. Tate of Piqua, Ohio, and Roscoe Tate of Bristol, Va.; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
The graveside service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at Shelby Hills Cemetery, Bristol, Tenn., with Rev. Rick Meade and Rev. James Meade officiating. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, for the graveside service. Condolences may be sent to the family via e-mail address tetrick@funeral-plans.com. Edgar S. Waddell
ATKINS - Edgar Steward Waddell, 65, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Waddell was born in Smyth County and was preceded in death by his father, Thomas Holmes Waddell Sr. He received his bachelors degree from Emory & Henry College and his masters degree from Radford University. Mr. Waddell was at the Atkins Elementary School for 32 years, having taught for 12 years and was principal for 20 years. He was a member of Davis Memorial United Methodist Church and the Atkins Ruritan.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Hess Waddell; two children, Jeff Waddell and fiancee, Heather Greene, of Aiken, S.C., and Sheila King and husband, Dennis, of Roanoke; his mother, Annie Holmes Waddell of Saltville; two sisters, Rita Repass of Marion and Phyllis Lamie of Saltville; two brothers, Thomas Holmes Waddell of Saltville and Harold Wayne Waddell of Saltville; and grandchildren Jason Waddell of Atlanta, Jessie Waddell of Aiken, Caitlyn King of Roanoke, Justin King of Roanoke and Brian King of Roanoke.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Rev. Harry Howe and Rev. Donna Hester officiating. Interment will follow in Ridgedale Cemetery in Rich Valley. Flowers will be accepted or memorial donations can be made to Davis Memorial United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Bradley's Funeral Home, Marion, is serving the Waddell family.

Donald Bruce Willis
NORTON - Friends and family of Donald Bruce Willis will gather at 2 p.m. Sunday at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens for burial rites.
Mr. Willis, 40, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Norton.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hazel Jackson Barton will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel with Evangelist Jim Hill and Rev. Ancil Childress officiating. Interment will follow in Ketron Memorial Gardens at Lebanon.

Mrs. Barton, 91, passed away Friday, May 24, 2002, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon following a brief illness.

Mr. Blankenship, 67, passed away Friday, May 24, 2002, at home.

Claude Calvin Brooks Sr.
MARION - Claude Calvin Brooks Sr., 76, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Brooks was born in Troutdale to the late John and Dema Brooks and was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Fortner Brooks. He was retired from Brunswick with 30 years of service. Mr. Brooks was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was a member of the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667 and the Adwolfe Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Claude Brooks Jr. and Sandra Alderman Brooks, Wytheville; grandchildren, Christopher Brooks, Wytheville, and Susan Woods and husband Mark, Bluff City; one great-grandchild, Dema Woods; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Charles Gene Huff.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with Rev. Bob Surber and Rev. Walter Statzer officiating. Interment will follow in Comers Creek Cemetery with miltiary honors being rendered by the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Jean F. Carrier
Jean F. Carrier, 85, of Edgemont Towers, Bristol, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol, Tenn. She was born Oct. 27, 1916, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Harry and Mary Fehrenberg. A housewife, she lived in Bristol most of her life. She was a member of Woodlawn Baptist Church for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar Lee (Pete) Carrier Sr.
Survivors include one son, E.L. (Buddy) Carrier Jr. of Abingdon; two daughters, Jean Blankenbecler and Delma Slagle, both of Bristol, Tenn.; and a sister, Harriet Wilson of Kingwood, Texas. Also surviving are six grandchildren; four great-granchildren; and one expected great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Woodlawn Baptist Church, Bristol, Tenn., with Rev. Steve Playl officiating. Interment will follow at Shelby Hills Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Woodlawn Baptist Church, 1400 Southside Ave., Bristol, Tenn. Friends may call at the home of the son, Buddy Carrier, 16332 Southwood Drive., Abingdon, or daughter, Delma Slagle, 120 Cliffwood Rd., Bristol, Tenn., at any time.

ABINGDON - William Leonard Combs, 83, of 19319 East Wood Drive, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at his residence.

David Dotson
ABINGDON - David Dotson, 41, died Thursday, May 23, 2002.
He was born in Virginia and lived in Chicago, Ill., before moving to Abingdon.
He was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include: his father, James Walter "Dusty" Dotson of Hurley, Va.; his mother, Linda Mewbourn of Chicago; one sister, Cheryl Marky of Chicago; one half-brother, Dustin Craig Dotson of Gilbert, W.Va.; one niece; one nephew; and a special friend, Denise Matney of Abingdon.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Greenhills Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, Va., with the Rev. Joel Thorton officiating.
There will not be any visitation at the funeral home.
The family will receive friends at the Greenhills Mausoleum, Claypool Hill, from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Betty Hayes Gilblair
KONNAROCK, Va. - Betty Hayes Gilblair, 59, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at her residence. She was a native of Konnarock and had lived inWashington, D.C., and in Cheyenne, Wyo., before moving back to Konnarock in 1985. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was the daughter of the late Edgar Lee Hayes.
She is survived by her mother, Arlene Hayes of Konnarock; one sister, Shirley Ann Leavitt and her husband, Herbert, of Cheyenne; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, in the Konnarock Baptist Church with Rev. Frank Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in Azen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jackie Trivett, Jimmy Trivett, Doug Hayes Kelly Price, Herman Hoosier, Jimmy Hoosier and James Huffman. Rev. McCoy, 71, of 22197 Guilford Drive, formerly of Richlands, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at an Abingdon hospital following a brief illness.

Charmie L. McCracken
Charmie L. Hartsock McCracken, 84, of 924 Lewis St., Bristol, Va., went to be with the Lord on Monday, May 27, 2002, at Wellmont Hospice House. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Lula Leonard Hartsock. She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and retired from Virginia Intermont College. She was a member of Genesis Freewill Baptist Church and was the widow of Clarence Arnold McCracken.
Survivors include: children, Douglas McCracken and wife Sylvia, Katherine Scardo and husband Larry, and Crystal Lenhart and husband Richard; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, V.C. Hartsock and wife Pauline; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Lawrence Statzer.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Genesis Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Jennings Dotson and Rev. Roger Ball officiating. Interment will follow at Gum Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Special music will be provided by Gary Davidson, Ben Harlow, Kimberly Davidson and the Genesis Church Trio. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday at Weaver Funeral Home and other times at the home of Douglas McCracken at 121 Beaver St., Bristol, Va.

A.R. "Gus" Miller
A.R. "Gus" Miller, 78, passed away May 26, 2002, at Madison House Assisted Living Center. He was born in Scott County,Va., and served in the European Theater during World War II. He had lived on Adaline Street in the Bloomingdale Community for over 50 years.
Gus was a retired carpetner and a life member of the Bloomingdale Ruritan Club, where he received several awards including "Man of the Year." He was a loving papaw and dad who enjoyed deer hunting and gardening.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 51 years, Fannie Houser Miller; his father, John Maynard Miller; his mother, Evie Houser Miller; two sisters, Maudie Burt and Julia Miller; and three brothers, J.W., Buford and Kenneth Miller.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, David and LeAnn Miller; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Tracy Pearcy; daughter, Dot Miller and special friend, Carla Childress, all of Kingsport; grandchildren, Carrie Carroll, Katie Miller, Andy Miller, Lance Pearcy and Brian Ketron; two great-granddaughters; his brother, Roy Miller, Bristol; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, or any time at the home of Dot and Carla, 3309 Misty Drive, Kingsport.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Guy Tilley officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday at East Lawn Memorial Park.

Jack D. Murphy
CLINTWOOD - Jack D. Murphy, 69, died at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center on Monday, May 27, 2002.
A lifelong resident of DickensonCounty, he was the son of the late John L. and Isabell Deel Murphy. He was a retired heavy equipment operator, a veteran of the U.S. Army Korean conflict and of the Baptist faith. Brothers, Donald, Earl, Ed and Tolby Murphy; and sisters, Inis Edwards, Jean Rudder and Madeline Day preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Pat Murphy, Clintwood; three sons, Mike Batkins and wife LeAnn, Carrollton,Va., Jackie Murphy and wife Sue, Clintwood, and Jeff Murphy and wife Wendi of Wirtz, Va.; two daughters, Patricia Compton and husband Allen, Clintwood and Barbara Carlton, Clintwood; one brother, Junior Murphy, Saluda, Va.; one sister, Victoria Rakes, Hillsville, Va.; six grandchildren, Crystal Johnson and husband John, Heather Murphy, Ryan Murphy, Amber Carlton, Michael Batkins Jr. and Allison Batkins; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2002, from the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with ministers Lynn Vanover and Joe Glenn Sluss officiating. Burial will follow in the family Cemetery, Route 1, Clintwood. The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A service will follow at 7 p.m. Pallbearers will be Roger Murphy, Jimmy Murphy, Larry Murphy, Micha Murphy, Paul Mullns, Bobby Hammons and Jennice Powers. Honorary pallbearers are J.L. Rose, Clyde Hill, Delbert Boggs, Jack Anderson,Willis Ring, Ralph "Cue Boy" Ring, Sam Ring, Buddy Wallen and Dean Deel. VFW Post 8979, DAV Chapter 35 and American Legion Post 227 will conduct military graveside honors.

Mrs. Parker, 74, went to be with the Lord May 23, 2002, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

H. Wayne Parsons
MEADOWVIEW - Rev. H. Wayne Parsons, 58, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 26, 2002. He was a native of Smyth County and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was the son of the late Homer and Juanita Parsons Doss; and the grandson of the late Rev. L.H. and Virginia Dye. He was preceded in death by his son, Kevin Wayne Parsons. He was a graduate of Abingdon High School and the Washington County Technical School.
He was founder and pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Meadowview. He was manager/operator of Meadowview Hardware and owner of Parsons Supply Co. for several years before being called into the ministry. He was very active with local school, sports, church and missions activities. He was a lifetime member of Meadowview PTA, was current treasurer of the Lebanon Baptist Association and a member of the Virginia Baptist General Board in Richmond. He was an avid bicyclist.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha Humphreys Parsons; one son, Steven Carroll Parsons of Meadowview; one brother, Gary Parsons of Richmond; four sisters, Mary Lee and husband D.C. Shuler of Sugar Grove, Va., Linda Parsons Danner of Marion, Millie Parsons Burke of Marion and Gail Parsons Parks of Marion; two grandchildren, Shelby Osborne Mardis and Jackie Osborne; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Pealer, Rev. Darrell Pickle and Rev. Richard Poe officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
The committal service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories Mausoleum at Forest Hills. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the church Wednesday by 10:15 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the deacons of Fellowship Baptist Church, Herman Hucks, Paul Price, Ray Smith, Bill Anderson, Guy Dishman Jr. and Jim Watson and Roger Hagy. Honorary pallbearers will be C.W. HURLEY, Va. - Janice Sue Billiter Payne, 62 years of age, of the Pounding Mill section, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2002, at home following an extended illness. Born inBuchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Lorene Duncan Billiter. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County, former employee of Food City and a member of the Mountain View Church of Christ. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Payne is survived by her husband, Elmer Ray Payne, Hurley; one daughter, Cynthia Lynn (Ronnie) Cantrell, Heathsville, Va.; one stepdaugather, Melissa Ann Payne, Rochester, Mich.; one son, Steven Ray Moore, Oakwood, Va.; one sister, Judy (Pete) Shaffer, Roanoke; and two brothers, John Robert (Linda) Billiter, Abingdon, and James E. (Shirley) Billiter, Vansant, Va. Also, she is survived by two grandchildren, Trevor Cantrell and Renee Moore.

Stuart Sr.; her children, Linda Cabiness, Martinsville, Carlotta Stewart, Bowie, Md., Wilma Stuart, Cincinnati, Ohio, Phyllis Walker, Savannah, Ga., Capt. Michael (DeAnn) Stuart, Japan, and Willie J. (Mary) Stuart Jr., Bowie; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Evelyn Stewart, Della M. Tucker and Gladys Lowe, all of Roanoke, and Lillian (Steve) Gardner, Barbara J. (Ray) Thomas, and Barbara E. (Milton) Washington, Philadelphia; brother, Curtis Russell, Pittsburgh; sister-in-law, Cora B. Russell; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday 11 a.m. at Sweet Union Baptist Church. Dr. Edward T. Burton will officiate. The interment will be in the Glade Hill Cemetery, Glade Spring, Va. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Friends may call Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home on Tuesday for viewing.

Denver Ellis Sturgill
CLINTWOOD - Funeral services for Denver Ellis Sturgill will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Hank Hemond and Larry Turner officiating. Burial will follow at the Stone Cemetery, Skeet Rock section of Clintwood. VFW Post 8979, DAV Chapter 35 and American Legion Post 227 will conduct military graveside honors. Pallbearers will be friends and family members.
Mr. Sturgill, 69, passed away Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the HolstonValley Medical Center, Kingsport.
Clintwood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
