Cardinal Gerald Emmett Carter, archbishop emeritus of Toronto, Canada's largest English-speaking diocese, died on Sunday at home with his family and close associates at his bedside at the age of 91 years after a brief illness. He had suffered a series of strokes and had been in and out of the hospital in recent months.

Carter was installed as archbishop of Toronto, a diocese of 1.4 million Catholics, in 1978, and was made a Cardinal the following year. He retired March 17, 1990.

Bearing the effects of a disabling stroke in mid-1981, Carter had been in ill health since the fall of 1984 but still maintained a busy workload. Last year, he was involved in the pope's visit to Canada for World Youth Day. Carter was a friend of the Pope, a relationship going back to the days when the pontiff was Archbishop Karol Wojtyla of Krakow, Poland, and He, a bishop of London, Ontario. He was considered an influential member of the church hierarchy, both in Canada and the Vatican. After being named cardinal, he became one of 12 members of the World Synod of Bishops, and also served on the Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity and the Secretariat for Non-Christians. He helped with the opening of the Covenant House for street youth under 21 in Toronto, and in launching an agreement with the Ontario government to provide affordable housing for the elderly and disabled.

He was the youngest son of the late Thomas J. Carter and Mary Kelty Kerr. Predeceased by his brothers Bishop Alexander Carter, Cyril and Thomas Carter; his sisters Irene (Sister Mary Lenore S.P.), Sister Mary Carter R.S.C.J. and Margaret Duggan. Lovingly remembered by his nephews Thomas J. Carter and his wife Jean, Gerald Duggan and his wife June; his nieces Lenore Duggan and Michele and her husband Ernest Martin. Sadly missed by his great-nieces and nephews Teresa Carter Davies and her husband Warren and their daughter Allison, Alexandra Carter, Thomas Carter Jr., Michael Duggan (Heidi), John Duggan (Sue) and Lisa Duggan. Cardinal Carter will rest at St. Michael's Cathedral, 200 Church Street, for visitation on Tuesday from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, April 10, 2003 at St Michael's Cathedral at 10:30 a.m. Entombment in the Bishops Mausoleum at Holy Cross Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Michael's Cathedral, Cardinal Carter's Breakfast Club at St Paul's Basilica, St. Michael's Hospital or Covenant House would be greatly appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements entrusted to the Newediuk Funeral Home, Kipling Chapel, 2104 Kipling Avenue 416-745-7555.
