Ray Hnatyshyn, Former Governor General

Canada's 24th Governor General

Former governor general of Canada from 1990 to 1995 Ramon Hnatyshyn has died at the age of 68 years. He had been battling cancer. Mr. Hnatyshyn earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954 and a Bachelor of Law in 1956 from the University of Saskatchewan. He was called to the Bar of Saskatchewan in 1957 and to the Ontario Bar in 1986. He spent 10 years as a sessional lecturer at the University of Saskatchewan College of Law. First elected to the House of Commons in 1974, he was sworn into the Privy Council on June 4, 1979. He held a number of different ministerial portfolios, including those of Attorney General and Minister of Justice. He was installed as Canada’s 24th Governor General on January 29, 1990 where he demonstrated his commitment to education by establishing numerous awards, scholarships and initiatives during his term as Governor General. In 1992, the Hnatyshyn family established the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards, along with the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Arts. Mr. Hnatyshyn's many honours include a Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) appointment for Saskatchewan in 1973 and for Canada in 1988. Throughout his professional career, he had received more than 15 honorary degrees from numerous national and international universities, including Carleton. After his term as the Queen's representative ended he returned to a career in law, ending two decades in the public eye. He leaves behind his wife Gerda and two sons John and Carl.
