Ilie Verdet, Former Prime Minister of Romania

Ilie Verdet former Prime Minister of Romania died on March 21, 2001 at the age of 75. Verdet is survived by his wife, two daughters and grandchildren. Verdet died of a massive heart attack in the country’s capital of Bucharest. Verdet was born and raised in Romania’s mountainous northeastern region. He started out working as a coal miner and later got involved in politics. Verdet became interested in politics when he joined the Communist Party in his early 20’s. After World Word II the coal mines came under the ownership of the Soviet Government. Workers were exploited and slowly began to organize and voice their discontent. Verdet decided to pursue a career in politics and slowly rose within the Communist Party ranks.

Verdet was appointed and served as Deputy Prime Minister from 1966 to 1974. By the late 70’s, the workers revolted and held a massive strike. Romania’s communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu, sent Verdet to maintain control and prevent the strike from spreading to the rest of the country. Verdet was held hostage for over two days, the strike finally ended and the workers were able to achieve a few of their demands. Verdet was promoted to the position of Prime Minister and served two years under the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. By the late 1980’s Romania experience a major power shift, like many other former Soviet Block Countries. He tried to take advantage of the political turmoil and rallied for a leadership position by forming a new Socialist Party. Verdet’s party did manager to oust dictator Nicolae Ceausescu from power however; Ion Iliescu eventually won the power struggle and gained control of the county as President.
