Vernon W. Bigelow, 60
FERRISBURGH - Vernon W. Bigelow, 60, of Ferrisburgh died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born in Waltham, the son of Elizabeth (Fresn) Bigelow and the late Frank Bigelow Sr. He attended schools in Ferrisburgh and graduated from Vergennes High School. He was employed at Northland Job Corps.
He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth Bigelow; a son, Vernon Bigelow and his wife, Michele, of Swanton; a daughter, Debra Carleton, of Springfield; a stepson, Chris Hathaway and his wife, Robin, of Williamstown; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Griffen of Williamstown; three sisters, Alice Husk and her husband, Neil, of Ferrisburgh, Betty Dague of Burlington, and Rose Stone of Winooski; a brother, Frank Bigelow Jr. and his wife, Rosaline, of New Haven; three grandsons; four granddaughters; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father, Frank Bigelow Sr., in 1975, and a brother, Chester Bigelow, in 1981.
Funeral services were held Saturday in Winooski, followed by interment in Milton Village Cemetery.
Reatha A. Stokes, 89
South Starksboro - Reatha A. Stokes, 89, died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.
She was born on Feb. 13, 1913, in Starksboro, the daughter of Andrew and Olive (Dwire) Hallock.
With her husband, Samuel Stokes, she owned and operated the family farm in South Starksboro. He died Nov. 4, 1977.
She is survived by a son, Teddy Stokes of South Starksboro; two daughters, Betty J. Norris of New Haven and Dixie L. Goodrich of Bristol; six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Betty Jo, in 2000.
Funeral services were held Monday in Bristol, followed by interment in Green Mountain Cemetery in Starksboro.

Edmond E. Atkins, 69
Burlington - Edmond Eldon Atkins, 69, died on Oct. 27, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Ferrisburgh on January 15, 1933, the son of John and Mildred (DeCoursey) Atkins.
He worked on the family farm on Walker Road in Ferrisburgh until 1998. His favorite motto was "Work does not hurt anyone." He served in the U.S. Army from August 1955 until July 1957 in Germany.
He is survived by his wife, Gisele Latreille, and their daughter, Ardenia; two stepdaughters, Suzele Smith and Deborah Whitney and her husband, Andy; his son Eldon Atkins; three granddaughters and one grandson; three brothers, Hubert Atkins and his wife, Linda, Rollin Atkins and Arland Atkins; three nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in Vergennes, followed by interment in Gage Cemetery, Ferrisburgh.
Patrick Joseph Coyle, 84
Ferrisburgh - Patrick Joseph Coyle, 84, died on Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his home in Ferrisburgh.
He was born Dec. 10, 1917, in Lacolle, Quebec, the son of Michael and Alma (Gates) Coyle.
He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes, Holy Names Society of Vergennes, Knights of Columbus fourth degree of Burlington, Our Family Fellowship of Vergennes, Catholic Family Fellowship of Burlington, Catholic Golden Age of Burlington, and Prison Volunteers.
He was predeceased by his first wife of 52 years, Marie (Little) Coyle.
He is survived by his wife Agnes (Bonnie) Coyle; 16 children, Annette and Dan Baronoski of North Carolina, Jeanne and Neil Bean of Texas, Harold and Jennifer Coyle of Ferrisburgh, James and Pamela Coyle of Ferrisburgh, Kathleen Provoncha of New York, Adele Coyle of Ferrisburgh, Caroline and David Bitler of Panton, Therese and Leon Flanders of Cambridge, Louise and Mark St. Jacques of New York, Joseph and Glenna Coyle of Ferrisburgh, Mary Coyle of Ferrisburgh, Dr. Gael Coyle and Mile Sliles of England, Judith and Robert Hart of Monkton, Dolores Coyle-Quirk and Jeffrey Quirk of Connecticut; Sue and Claus Kjaer of Massachusetts, John Coyle of Monkton, and Sherry Coyle of Monkton; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adrienne Paduchak of New Hampshire and Mary and Charles Shover of Burlington; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Theodore Coyle; a daughter, Patricia Coyle; a grandson, Scott Coyle; a granddaughter, Martha Hart; and a sister, Agnes Cousineau.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 31, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes. Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Vergennes.

Leonard Robert Cunningham, 69
Vergennes - Leonard Robert Cunningham, 69, a longtime resident of Vergennes, died unexpectedly Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002.
He was born in Addison, on Nov. 28, 1932, the son of Eldred "Dud" Cunningham and Lilah (LaRose) Cunningham Delorme.
He was married in St. Peter's Church in Vergennes on Aug. 23, 1958, to Clara (Chamberlain) Cunningham.
He served with the U. S. Army 17th Infantry Regiment in the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Vermont National Guard and Army Reserves for 21 years, retiring as Sergeant First Class.
After 37 years at Simmonds Precision-Hercules-Goodrich Corp., he retired in 1993.
He was an active member of the United Methodist Church of Vergennes, where he served as an usher for over 40 years.
His greatest enjoyment in life was his family.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Clara; three daughters, Michelle and her husband, David Savageau, of Rutland, Catherine Cunningham of Proctor, and Lisa and her husband, David Supanich, of Lusby, Md.; a son, Leonard Robert "Rob" Cunningham II and his wife, Wendy, of North Hero; five grandchildren; his twin sister, Lucille Nelson of Connecticut; two sisters, Beverly Peck, and her husband, Floyd, of Middlebury, and Kimberley Laughner and her husband, Dan, of New Hampshire; two brothers, Richard Cunningham and his wife, Harriet Patrick, of Charlotte, and David Cunningham of Massachusetts; a sister-in-law, Arlene Cunningham of Burlington, and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Casey of Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Eldred Cunningham, his sister, Rosaline Casey, and his stepfather, Lawrence Delorme.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Vergennes, with interment in St. Peter's Cemetery in Vergennes.

Norman Bailey
BRANDON - Norman Chauncey Bailey, 79, died early Sunday, October 27, 2002, at his home in Brandon.
He was born in Leicester on April 11, 1923, the son of William and Celia (Brown) Bailey. He received his early education in Leicester schools.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army Air Forces. He was directly involved in the air offensive against Japan in the western Pacific, serving with the 28th Bombardment Squadron of the 19th Bomb Group. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Vermont and worked as an automobile mechanic with his brothers in Forestdale. He later co-owned and operated Bailey Brothers Exxon in Brandon. He retired in 1993 after more than 50 years as an auto mechanic.
He was a former member of Brandon American Legion Post 55. He enjoyed hunting, and lived to fish, especially with his fishing buddies Gene Foss, James "Mickey" Disorda and Perley Disorda.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis (Disorda) Bailey of Brandon, whom he married in Leicester June 22, 1948; two sons, Norman C. Bailey Jr and his wife, Eunenee of Brandon, and Robert Bailey and his wife, Debra, of Forestdale; three daughters, Linda Stone and her husband, David, of Forestdale, Carol Racine and her husband, Robert, of Leicester, and Pamela Sue Bailey of Brandon; one sister, Margaret Bailey of Brandon; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Aretta Shackett and Josephine Morcombe, and two brothers, Adrian Bailey and Nelson Bailey.
The funeral service was held Wednesday at Brandon Congregational Church, followed by a graveside committal service and burial with military honors at the family lot at Pine Hill Cemetery.

Ethel Irene Fletcher, 102
LEICESTER - Ethel Irene Fletcher, 102, died early Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 2002, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born in New Haven on Nov. 9, 1899. She was the daughter of Peter and Minnie (Gerow) Swenor. She received her early education in New Haven schools and graduated from Beeman Academy.
Following her marriage to her first husband, Leon P. Shackett, they made their home in East Middlebury, where she helped her husband farm. In 1933, they moved to Leicester where they continued farming. Mr. Shackett died in 1942.
She was the overseer of the poor in Leicester during the l940s. She later remarried, to Leo Fletcher, who died in 1965.
She was a member of the Leicester Homemakers Club and the Leicester Senior Citizens, She had attended the Leicester Church of the Nazarene.
She is survived by two sons, Leon "Bucky" Shackett of Leicester and Roderick Shackett of Elyria, Ohio; seven grandchildren, nine great- grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Roy Shackett, and four sisters, Frances Shaw, Alice Schmaldienst, Elizabeth Ashley and Lucy Armstrong.
The funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2, at 10 a.m., at the Leicester Meeting House in Leicester. The Rev. Larry Keiser, pastor of The Leicester Church of The Nazarene, will officiate. A private graveside burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. Following the service the family will receive friends at the Leicester Senior Citizens Center for a time of fellowship and reflection.

Bernard Victor Giard, 77
Bridport - Bernard V. Giard, 77, died Friday, Oct. 25, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care, surrounded by family.
He was born in Bridport on May 2, 1925, the son of Victor and Marguerite (Nadeau) Giard, and was a lifelong resident of Bridport. He served as a member of the National Guard, and in World War II.
On Aug. 3, 1963, he married Doris E. Moulton. He was a farmer in Bridport for many years, retiring in 1987. In addition, he was a member of the Masons, served on the Board of Civil Authority, was a selectman for the town of Bridport and was on the Tri-Town Water Board.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Doris E. Giard; seven children; Sandra Garthaffner and her husband, Robert, of Orwell; Marilynn Giard and her husband, Harry Delp, of Burlington, Richard Giard and his wife, Martita, of Fairfield, Janice Flowers and her husband, Scott, of Savannah, N.Y., Sally Billings of Leicester, Judy Giard of Bridport, and Allen Giard and his wife, Karen, of Richmond; his sister, Kathryn Myrick; his brother, Russell Giard; his aunts, Violet Nadeau and Vivian Jackson; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Walter, Wallace, Robert and Arthur Giard.
Family members described his love of family, and recalled him giving tractor rides to his grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at the family's home in Bridport.

Harrison Davis, Edna Davis
WALLINGFORD, Conn. - The Rev. Harrison Davis, 90, who served as minister of the Methodist Church in Vergennes, Vt., from 1940 to 1946, died Nov. 8, 2002, at the Masonic Hospital in Wallingford, Conn.
His wife, Edna, died six days later, on Nov. 14, also at the Masonic Hospital. She would have been 89 on Nov. 17.
Rev. Davis was born in Boston in 1912. He was a 1934 graduate of Boston University and a 1937 graduate of the Boston University School of Theology.
Mrs. Davis was born in Peoria, Ill., in 1913. She was a 1937 graduate of Berea College, in Berea, Ky..
Rev. and Mrs. Davis were married in 1937 in La Crosse, Wisc.
Prior to his arrival in Vergennes, Rev. Davis served as minister at the Methodist churches in both Fair Haven and West Addison from 1937 to 1940.
He left Vergennes in 1946 to become senior minister of the Crawford Memorial Methodist Church in New York, N.Y. He also served churches in New Canaan, Conn., and New Rochelle, Newburgh and Peekskill, N.Y.
From 1960 to 1965, Rev. Davis was District Superintendent of the Brooklyn North and then the Long Island East Districts of the New York area of The United Methodist Church, where he supervised some 70 churches.
The couple died after long illnesses. They were married 65 years. From 1996 until their deaths, they lived at Ashlar Village, a retirement community in Wallingford.
They are survived by their daughter, Karen Mayer of Troy, Mich.; three sons, Paul, of Cupertino, Cal., Stephen, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and James, of Stamford Conn.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A joint memorial service will be held Jan. 25, 2003, at the Ashlar Village Retirement Community, Wallingford, Conn.

Russell C. Hansen, 81
FORT DAVIS, Texas - Russell C. Hansen, 81, of Fort Davis and Lincoln, Vt., died Nov. 14, 2002, in an Odessa, Texas, hospital.
He was born April 10, 1921, in Highland Park, Mich., and graduated from the University of Rhode Island in 1953.
A former electrical engineer at Bell Labs and Xerox Corp., where he received several patents, he also taught physics for 25 years. It was after photographing rifle bullets passing through playing cards, light bulbs and bars of soap with his students that he decided to try photographing birds in flight at close range, an interest that became an exciting avocation.
Hansen photographed more than 140 species of birds within three feet of the camera for more than 27 years. He designed and built the electronic flashes and circuitry necessary to stop the wing action of a bird as it breaks a light beam which triggered a motor-driven Hasselblad camera.
He photographed birds in Canada, Jamaica, Trinidad, Tobago, Guatemala, Belize, Mexico and the Big Bend, using his unique techniques of high-speed strobes and light-beam triggering.
His stop-action flight photographs have appeared in numerous periodicals and books including American Birds, National Wildlife, Yankee, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Fotografisk Tidsdrift, The Audubon Society Encyclopedia of North American Birds, Far Out Facts (National Geographic Society), National Geographic Research, The Audubon Society Field Guide of North American Birds, and the National Audubon Society North American Bird Feeder Handbook, and more recently Peterson Field Guides, Hummingbirds of North America and Hummingbirds of the American West.
He lectured widely for Audubon chapters, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science Annual Bird Conference, the Birds of Vermont Museum, The Connecticut Museum of Natural History, Cornell's Laboratory of Ornithology, The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, The Southwest Research Station of The American Museum of Natural History and the North American Nature Photography Association.
His traveling exhibit, "Birds in Flight," has been featured at more than 50 museums throughout the United States since 1992.
Hansen is survived by his wife and partner Martha "Marty," who traveled extensively with him from their summer home in Vermont and their winter home in Fort Davis; daughter Susan J. McArdle of Shoreham, Vt., son David L. Hansen Sr. of Leominster, Mass.; four grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Hansen of Wyandotte, Mich.; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Joan Hansen of Westland, Mich., and Ken and Joy Hansen of Plymouth, Mich.; and a niece.
A memorial service will be held on Dec. 2 at 11 a.m., at the United Church of Lincoln in Lincoln, Vt.

Anna Mae Hatch
West Ferrisburgh - Anna Mae Hatch, 80, died Nov. 27, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care after a brief illness.
She was born July 29, 1922, in Worcester, Mass., the daughter of Patrick and Stella (Baker) Coyle. She graduated from Vergennes High School, class of 1938, and received her RN from Rutland Hospital School of Nursing, class of 1943.
She married Gerald W. Hatch in September 1944.
She began her nursing career at Porter Hospital in Middlebury in 1943, where she was the supervisor of obstetrics. She remained there until 1962.
She was then employed by the state of Vermont from 1962 through 1987. Her positions included a charge nurse at the Weeks School in Vergennes for 17 years, and, after the closure of the facility, she accepted a position surveying nursing homes throughout the state.
Her personal interests and organizational involvement included extensive travel after her retirement, volunteering for the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad, RSVP Advisory Council member, Vermont Department of Aging and Disability board and involvement at the state level with UVM Extension Homemakers, St. Anne's Society, and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
She will be remembered for her tireless dedication to family, friends and neighbors.
Survivors include four sons and their wives, Albert and Linda White of Panton, Gerald (Bill) and Christine of Brandon, Patrick and Susan of West Ferrisburgh, and James (Michael) and Susan of West Ferrisburgh; a daughter-in-law, Daryl Hatch of Panton; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grand children.
She was predeceased by her husband of 35 years, Gerald W. Hatch Sr., and by her son, Giles (Peter) Hatch.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, Dec. 2, at 1 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes. Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery in Vergennes.

North Ferrisburgh - Michael Wrisley Tucker, 52, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002, at Vermont Respite House in Williston.
He was born on Oct. 1, 1950, in Middlebury, the son of Foster J. and Edna (Wrisley) Tucker Sr.
He attended schools in Ferrisburgh and Vergennes. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He is survived by three children, Gina Marie Morrissey of Middlebury, Mandy LeBeau of North Ferrisburgh and Michael Scott Tucker of Vergennes; his companion, Sherry Mumley of Burlington; his mother, Edna Wrisley Tucker Ball of Monkton; his stepfather, Winston J. Ball of Monkton; three brothers, Foster J. Tucker Jr. and his wife, Pam, of Vergennes, Stephen C. Tucker and his wife, Dianne, of Vergennes, and Gregory P. Tucker and his companion, Robin Wagner, of Burlington; three sisters, Lee Phelan and her husband, Dick, of Ferrisburgh, Suzanne Bushey and her husband, Michael, of Monkton, and Kimberly Ann Curtis and her husband, Tim, of Monkton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Foster J. Tucker Sr., and brother, Scott T. Tucker.

Lawrence Alexander Aunchman
BURLINGTON - Lawrence A. Aunchman, 82, of Burlington, died on June 12, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
He was born in Middlebury on April 8, 1921, the son of Alexander and Esther (Hendricks) Aunchman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1946 he married Theresa Dumas.
In 1947 he graduated from Champlain College with a degree in business administration. He managed Valade's Restaurant in Burlington for 23 years. He then managed Dowlings Inc. in St. Albans, retiring as vice president. He continued working at Ben Franklin in South Burlington.
Active in community affairs, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club and served as president in 1956. He was also a member of the Burlington Chamber of Commerce and Burlington Restaurant Association. He was also active in other areas, from conservation to teaching skiing to underprivileged children. He had a passion for the outdoors and spent much of his free time hunting, fishing, gardening, and working on his camp. He passed on his love of the outdoors and animals to his three daughters.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa Dumas of Burlington; his daughters, Linda Clapper and her husband, David, of Burlington, Laurie Aunchman and her husband, Scott Danzig, of Richmond, and Lisa Aunchman-Johnston and her husband, Bill, of Underhill; five grandchildren; a sister, Mary Shaw of Winooski; a brother, Walter Aunchman of Punta Gorda, Fla., and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Agnes Dumas, and three brothers, Clarence, Arthur, and Kenneth Aunchman.

Thomas Leo Corcoran
Waltham - Thomas Leo Corcoran died unexpectedly on Sunday, June 15, 2003, at the age of 59. He was born in Montclair, N.J., on Feb. 23, 1944, the son of Leo and Ethel (Fischer) Corcoran.
A native of New Jersey and veteran of the U.S. Navy, he lived for several years in Alaska before moving to Vermont, after marrying Donna (Hunt) Corcoran in 1972. He spent many years working on the family farm before serving the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union (ANWSU) school district as a custodian and a bus driver in various schools for the past 17 years.
He is survived by his wife, Donna; his children, Kathleen, Eileen, and Luther; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and James Merrigan Sr.; sister and brother-in-law Eileen and Peter Humphrey; and several nieces and nephews and other family members.
Friends may call at the Brown McClay Funeral Home in Vergennes on Thursday, June 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 20, at the Congregational Church in Vergennes.

Harold L. Corts
Lincoln - Harold L. Corts, 62, died Friday, June 13, 2003, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.
He was born July 8, 1940, in Utica, N.Y., the son of Clarence and Anna (Weller) Corts.
He was a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961 to 1966, and a member of American Legion Post 19 in Bristol. He was employed by the American Morgan Horse Association for more than 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Caroline Corts of Lincoln; three children, Dawn Corts and Ben Jellison of New Hampshire, Charles Corts and his wife, Karen, of Bennington, N.H., and Stephanie and Shawn Lathrop of Starksboro; one grandson; Robert and Jane Coleman of Westmoreland, N.Y., whom he considered brother and sister; and several cousins. He was predeceased by his parents.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at United Church of Lincoln, with interment planned for a later date.

BRANDON - Elaine Blanche Keinonen, 79, died Thursday, June 12, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Brandon.
She was born in Goshen on Oct. 4, 1923, the daughter of Leo and Genevieve (Yattaw) Hayes. She received her early education in Goshen schools and attended Vergennes High School.
On Aug. 31, 1940, she married Waldo Keinonen in Forest Dale. They made their home in Bristol, Conn., where they raised their family. She was employed at Sessions Clock Manufacturing Company in Forestville, Conn., for over 22 years. She and her husband retired to Florence in 1972. Mr. Keinonen died in 1990.
She enjoyed fishing and loved cooking, gardening, cross-stitch and RV travel.
She is survived by three daughters, Marie F. Belanger of Springfield, Mass., Barbara A. Scoskie of Barnard and Linda K. Cummings of Brandon, with whom she made her home; one son, Waldo H. Keinonen of Rutland; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a brother, Leo Hayes Jr., and four sisters, Blossom Hayes, Genevieve Parker, Marion Hayes and Myrtle Hornbeck.
The funeral service was held Tuesday at The Brandon Congregational Church, with graveside committal service and burial in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery, Pittsford.

Pomainville memorial set
SHOREHAM - The Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Juliette Mary Pomainville, 95, who died Feb. 18, 2003, at Helen Porter Health & Rehabilitation Center in Middlebury, will be celebrated on Saturday, June 21, 2003, at 11 a.m., at St. Genevieve Catholic Church in Shoreham.
The Rev. Justin Baker, pastor, will be the celebrant.
The graveside committal service and burial will follow the Mass, in the family lot at St. Genevieve Cemetery
Following the committal service, the family will receive friends at Shoreham Congregational Church hall, for a time of fellowship and reflection.

LINCOLN - Graveside services for Donald E. Sargent Sr. will take place at Maple Cemetery in Lincoln on Sunday, June 22, at 2 p.m.
George H. Churchill, 83
BRANDON - George H. Churchill, 83, died Aug. 6, 2003, at his home.
He was born July 23, 1920, in Brandon, the son of Andrew Hawley and Winifred (Locke) Churchill. He grew up in Brandon, and was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Brandon High School in 1939. In World War II he was a U.S. Marine, and fought on Iwo Jima.
After the war, he worked on the family dairy farm and for the United States Postal Service. He married Elise Van Wess on Nov. 27, 1952. They had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.
He was made a Master Mason at St. Paul's Lodge in 1947, and recently received his 60-year pin from the Masons.
Survivors include his wife, Elise, of Brandon; a sister, Mary Jane Wing of Brandon; a brother, John Winston Churchill of Mackinaw, Mich.; five nieces and a nephew; ten grandnephews and five grandnieces. He was predeceased by a son, Peter Craig, in 1974.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, with burial and Forest Dale Cemetery. Friends may donate to the charity of their choice in his memory, or plant a tree.
DALE LOVE
East Middlebury - Dale Love, 65, died on Sept. 28, 2003, at Helen Porter Nursing Home.
He was born on Jan. 14, 1938, in Blossburg, Pa., son of Richard and Kathryn (Campbell) Love. He was an electrical engineer, employed by General Electric in Burlington and in Syracuse, N.Y., for 27 years. He retired in 1993.
He enjoyed fishing, model railroading and model airplanes.
He was married to Suzanne Ventris in 1959; she died in 1962. In 1965, he married Jean Liddick. They made their home in East Middlebury for the past 6 years.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Love; two daughters, Kim Siner and her husband, Mark, of Williamstown, Vt., and Katherine Stone and her husband, Timothy, of Milton; three sons, Richard Love of Burlington, Eric Love and his wife, Sylvia, of Williston, and Daniel Love of Houston, Tex.; four granddaughters and one grandson, Kristian Riley of Williston.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

RUSSELL A. PIERCE
Starksboro - Russell A. Pierce, 86, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on Aug. 4, 1917, the son of Marble and Annetta (Russell) Pierce in the house on Shaker Hill where he lived until 1998. In early 1998, after a hospital stay, he entered the Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center and lived there until his death.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Culver) Pierce of Middlebury, and by many family and friends.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in Bristol. Interment will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Huntington.

Charles Ringer, Sr.
Vergennes - Frederick Charles Ringer, Sr., 82, died on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury, after a short illness.
He was born in Vergennes on Jan. 11, 1921, the son of Charles and Grace (LeBeau) Ringer. He graduated from Vergennes High School in 1940 and worked for Simmonds Precision for 41 years, retiring in 1982.
He married Lucille Patrie on Nov. 27, 1947; she died in 1976. He remarried in 1981, to Ruth Tucker, who died in 1999.
He was a member and communicant of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes, a charter member of the Vergennes Rescue Squad, and a member of the Eagles Club.
Family members remember him as "the great fisherman," and as a hard-working, kind person who loved his family, fishing, gardening, and sharing his many stories of life's experiences. He never complained about the hard times or sickness in his life.
He is survived by four sons, Frederick and Mike of Essex Junction, Patrick and his wife, Patricia, of Kendall Park, N.J., and Tony and his wife, Wendy, of Vergennes; two daughters, Mary Essex and her husband, David, of Ferrisburgh, and LuAnne Mailloux and her husband, Paul, of Ferrisburgh; three stepchildren, Connie Hobbs, Tommy Tucker Sr. and Charles Tucker; 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; two brothers, Raymond Ringer and his wife, Alice, of Vergennes, and Vincent Ringer and his wife, Lois, of Lebanon, Pa.; and three sisters-in-law, Elaine Rice and her husband, Martin, Claire Irish, and Alma Ringer. He was predeceased by two sisters, Blanche and Eleanor, and two brothers, Bernard and Theodore.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Vergennes, with interment in St. Peter's Cemetery.

Kenneth Hayes
East Middlebury - Kenneth Hayes, 63, of East Middlebury, died Sept. 27, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
He was born Oct. 2, 1939, in Middlebury, the son of Pearl Hayes. He was raised in Forestdale and graduated from Brandon High School in 1958.
He married Sandra Newton on Feb. 7, 1959. They settled in East Middlebury where they made their home for the last 43 years. He was employed for 25 years at Palmer's Dairy and 12 years at Middlebury Vending. He was a volunteer fireman in East Middlebury for 18 years and also coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball.
He is survived by his mother; his wife, Sandra; four children, Jeff and his wife, Denise, of Salisbury, Mike and his wife, Sandy, of East Middlebury, Kim Bilodeau and her husband Allen, of Shoreham, and Machelle St. Pierre and her husband, Ken, of Crown Point, N.Y.; three brothers, Ronald of Brandon, Richard of Forestdale and David of Gardner, Mass.; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the East Middlebury United Methodist Church, with burial in Prospect Cemetery, East Middlebury.

Noah Whitney
MIDDLEBURY - Noah John Whitney, infant son of Barry and Sarah (Herrick) Whitney of Brandon, died on Sept. 26, 2003, at Porter Hospital.
He is survived by his parents; two brothers, Gregory and Daniel; his maternal grandparents, Charles and Bonnie Herrick of Queensbury, N.Y.; paternal grandparents, Barry Sr. and Pamela Whitney of Salisbury; maternal great-grandmother, June Pipeling of Brandon; paternal great-grandmother, Laurette Whitney of East Middlebury; and paternal great-grandfather, Herbert Whitney of Salisbury. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles, Becky Herrick of Plattsburgh, N.Y., Ben Herrick and his wife Cathy of Rutland, Marci and Tim Whitney of Shoreham, and Brandi Clark of Brandon; one cousin; and many other family members.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
Arthur L. Adams Sr., 83
VERGENNES - Arthur L. Adams Sr., 83, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003 at Clark's Nursing Home in Vergennes. He was born on Oct. 17, 1920, in Hazelwood, Pa., the son of Henry and Jenny (Herdman) Adams.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He is survived by six children and their spouses, Lee A. and Robert Dains of Pennsylvania, Arthur and Celeste Adams Jr. of Charlotte, Linda and Billy Badstibner of Pennsylvania, Candy and Bill Schmidt of Vergennes, Mike and Terry Adams of Pennsylvania, and Helen and Richard Koontz of West Virginia; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a brother, Joe Blake of Florida; a sister, Anna Metzger of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Opal (Hurley) Adams in 1998.
