Elizabeth M. Putney
Elizabeth M. Putney, 81, of Glover died April 21, 2006, in Newport.
Ms. Putney was born October 29, 1924, in Montpelier, a daughter of Murley and Marion (Hoffman) Putney. She attended school in Barre and Graniteville and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1942.
During World War II she worked as a government inspector at Bell Aircraft in Burlington. In 1945 she was accepted at Wilfred Academy in Boston. Upon graduation in 1947 she moved to Glover and operated a beauty shop until 1976.
In 1948 she was appointed assistant treasurer for the town of Glover and served 25 years. In 1952 she was elected Glover town clerk. She had served for 35 years when she retired in 1987.
She was assistant treasurer of the Orleans County Fair Association for 13 years and was secretary and treasurer for the Glover Public Library for 24 years. She was the town agent for 17 years. She was elected town treasurer in 1972 and served for 15 years. She was a member of the Glover Planning Commission.
She held membership with the Vermont Association of Town Clerks and Treasurers and the New England Association of Municipal Clerks and Treasurers. She was a member of the Glover Historical Society and the Glover Community Church.
She enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, carving miniature ducks, gardening, bird watching, and listening to music.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews: Gail Putney of Elmore, Mary Rose Putney of Williamstown, Carol Martin of Lebanon, New Hampshire, Connie Putney of Northfield, Roland Putney and his wife, Linda, of Websterville, Ronald Putney and his wife, Donna, of East Barre, Harold Murley Putney Jr. of Southbury, Paul Putney and his wife, Lynn, of Barre, Robert Putney and his wife, Amber, of Williamstown, Richard Putney of Williamstown, and Daniel Martin and his wife, Linda, of Lebanon; by a sister-in-law, Kay Putney, of Websterville; by several cousins; and by a sister, Winnifred Martin, of Williamstown. She was predeceased by two brothers, Harold Putney Sr. and Francis Putney; and by a sister, Bernice Putney.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 27, at the Glover Community Church with the Reverend Christine Osowski officiating. Interment will take place in the Irasburg Cemetery.

Harold J. Haynes
Harold J. Haynes, 87, of North Troy died peacefully in Newport on Wednesday, April 19, 2006, in the arms of his family. He joined his wife, Dorothy, who died December 20, 1997.
Mr. Haynes was born in Poultney on October 31, 1918, a son of Harold E. and Lydia (Wiesner) Haynes.
On August 11, 1940, he married Dorothy Toof, who predeceased him in 1997.
He was a 1939 graduate of the University of Vermont. He owned and operated Haynes Real Estate in North Troy since 1954. He held memberships with the Orleans County Board of Realtors, the Vermont Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors.
He and his wife owned and operated Dot's Shop in North Troy.
He held many offices for the town of North Troy, and his contributions to the community were endless. With the Kiwanis Club in Troy, he was one of the founding fathers and the first president of Jay Peak Resort and was honored last year at the fiftieth anniversary of the mountain.
He was a current member of the North Troy Planning Commission, a member of the First Congregational Church of North Troy since he moved there, and a member of the North Troy Masonic Lodge for 65 years. He held offices with the Vermont State Chapter of Future Farmers of America and taught vocational agriculture at North Troy High School and Newport Center schools from 1939 to 1967. He then taught horticulture and vocational agriculture at North Country Union High School and taught vocational skills such as welding, woodworking, and public speaking to area students.
With the agricultural department, he created the land lab on the Quarry Road, where he helped to acquire the land and plant the trees for students to study and sell as Christmas trees.
He was the founder of the North Troy tennis program. He formed the Tri-town Natural Resource Committee and created the North Troy walking trail along the Missisquoi River.
He was active in Tranquil Gardens, in which he was instrumental in acquiring the land and getting it started. He oversaw the beautification of the village of North Troy. He was a big help to his granddaughter at theB&D Grocery Store in North Troy for many years.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing in his early days and trapping. Four titles could be used to describe him: advisor to everyone, a naturalist, a creator, and an optimist. His motto was 'appreciate life and live it to the fullest.'
He is survived by his daughter Karleen Haynes Denton and her husband, Roland, of North Troy; by his grandchildren CrisChoquette and her husband, Randy, of North Troy and Terri Medley and her husband, Doug, of North Troy; by his great-grandchildren: Monica and Bryan Choquette and Aaron, Andrew and Derek Medley; by his brother Richard Haynes and his wife, Florence, of Poultney; and by his sister Evelyn Monroe and her husband, Charles, of Poultney. He was predeceased by an infant sister, Ruth Marie Haynes; and by a sister-in-law, Barbara Haynes.
Funeral services were held April 24 the First Congregational Church in North Troy with Richard O'Hara and Pastor Rick Shover officiating. Interment followed at the North Troy Village Cemetery.

Russell R. Decker
Russell R. Decker, 93, of Barre, formerly of Craftsbury, died April 19, 2006, at his home.
Mr. Decker was born in Arlington, Nebraska, on September 24, 1912, a son of Roy and Hattie (Bump) Decker.
He entered the U.S. Army from Camp Upton, New York, on March 13, 1942. He served as an assistant squad leader with the 307th Infantry, 77th Division in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. Wounded in service to his country, his discharge was from Rhoads General Hospital in Utica, New York, on January 4, 1946. Sergeant Decker's awards included the World War II Victory Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, a Purple Heart, and the Good Conduct Medal.
He later made his home in Mill Village in Craftsbury where he operated a goat farm for many years. He enjoyed trading goats, crops, or any other items for things he needed. He is remembered as a regular participant of the WDEV Trading Post. In October 1996 he sold his farm and moved to Cobble Hill in Barre.
A very religious man, he was a member of the United Church of God.
He leaves a brother, Clyde Decker, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and other extended family. He was predeceased by two brothers, Earl and Clarence Decker; and by a sister, Violet.
A funeral service was held April 25 at the Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common, with Paul Suckling, pastor of the United Church of God in Shewsbury, Massachusetts, officiating. Interment followed in the Albany Village Cemetery.

Glendon A. Anderson Sr.
Glendon A. Anderson Sr., 93, a former resident of Craftsbury, died at the Westwood Health Care Center in Keene, New Hampshire, on Saturday, April 22, 2006.
Mr. Anderson was born in Glover on August 24, 1912, a son of Lynn and Fannie (Scott) Anderson.
He attended elementary school in Glover and in 1936 married AliceArchambault in Barton. She died in 1940.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from July 1942 to October 1945. He received training at the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics in Newark, New Jersey. He was assigned to the air base in Karachi, India, as part of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater campaign and in the Persian Gulf as an airplane and engine mechanic.
He returned to Vermont where he farmed and worked as a handyman. He later restored wood furniture, specializing in antique oak.
He enjoyed trout fishing on the Branch and Lamoille rivers and playing the fiddle.
He leaves three sons: Glendon Anderson Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of Del Rio, Texas, David Anderson and his wife, Gertrude, of Dayton, Minnesota, and Thomas Anderson and his wife, Anna Mary, of Craftsbury; four daughters: Betty Treadwell and her husband, Clarence, of Alstead, New Hampshire, Laura Phillips and her husband, Mike, of Northfield, Luanne Laird and her husband, Thomas, of Roxbury, and Linda Hough and her husband, Clifford, of Barre; one brother, Earl Anderson, of Pike, New Hampshire; four sisters: Hazel Wendelburg of Florida, Grace Morey of Florida, Bernice Rowell of Manchester, New Hampshire, and Rebecca Cram of Florida; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Rose Thompson; by a son, Edward Anderson; and by a brother, Paul Anderson.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, April 27, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Craftsbury. Interment in St. Paul's Cemetery in Barton will be at 2 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common.

Veda Mae Ryan
Veda Mae Ryan, 86, of Derby Line died April 22, 2006, in Bennington.
Mrs. Ryan was born August 24, 1919, in Woodsville, New Hampshire, a daughter of Alvin and Mary (Barney) Adams. She attended elementary school while boarding at St. Paul's Convent School in Barton. She went on to our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy in Manchester, New Hampshire, while working at St. Philomena Home for retired ladies, conducted by the Sisters of Mercy.
On August 30, 1937, she married Gerald 'Joe' Ryan. They settled on a dairy farm in Derby where they spent many happy years with their children.
Mr. Ryan predeceased Mrs. Ryan on March 13, 1989.
She was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and folding the bulletins for St. Edward's and St. Benedict's churches. She taught Sunday school for many years.
She is survived by a daughter, Margaret 'Peggy' Moulton, and her husband of Coventry; by a son, Michael John Ryan, of Shaftsbury; by nine grandchildren: Vicky Whitehill and her husband, Jerry, of Morgan, Shane Moulton and his wife, Juanita, of Irasburg, William 'Billy' Moulton of Coventry, Chastity DeRohen and her husband, Michael, of Derby, Charity Moulton of Coventry, Gerald Wright of Claremont, New Hampshire, and Kathryn, Courtney, and Johnathan Ryan, all of Bennington; by five great-grandchildren: Joseph Whitehill, Danielle Whitehill, Justin Derohen, Kyle Moulton, and Ryan Moulton; by two sisters, Velma Blais of Pembroke, New Hampshire, and Mona Hollis of Pittsburg, New Hampshire; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Wright; and by a sister, Jean Perkins.
Funeral services were held April 26 at St. Edward's Catholic Church with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed in St. Edward's Catholic Cemetery in Derby Line.

Hazel L. Davis
Hazel L. Davis, 75, of Westfield died in Newport on Tuesday, May 9, 2006.
Mrs. Davis was born in Westfield on September 10, 1930, a daughter of Isadore and Alice (Graveline)Barre.
On June 8, 1957, she married Harold Davis.
She was a lifelong resident of Westfield. In 1991, with her husband and children, she opened and operated the Barrewood Campground in Westfield.
She enjoyed cooking, doing crafts, quilting, and especially visiting with her many friends and family.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Harold; by their children: Bruce Davis and his wife, Mary, of Newport, Dianne Conard and her husband, Robert, of Merritt Island, Florida, and Terrie Davis Perry and her husband, Mark, of Westfield; by her five granddaughters: Shannon, Jennifer, Whitney, Meghan, and Alana; and by her three grandsons: Robert, Jason, and Todd.
Funeral services were held May 12 at the Westfield Congregational Church with the Reverend Anne Squire officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Westfield Cemetery.

Bernice E. 'Bunny' Gardner
Bernice E. 'Bunny' Gardner died peacefully at home on May 11, 2006.
Mrs. Gardner was born in Island Pond June 26, 1931, a daughter of Avis (Rivers) and OrvaleRiggie.
She attended St. Mary's Academy for eight years and went on to Brighton High School where she furthered her education.
She later married Russell W. Gardner. She resided in Enfield, New Hampshire, for 40 years and moved to Lebanon, New Hampshire, in 1992.
She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post No. 2571 of White River Junction.
Most will remember her from opinions in local newspapers. Her interests were her family, friends, writing, and cooking.
She is survived by two children, Bruce A. Gardner of Hinsdale, New Hampshire, and Susan L. Fortunati of Corinth; by one sister, Ethelwyn 'Inky' Wilkie, of Connecticut; by four grandchildren: Russell A. Gardner of Enfield, Jody O. Larabee of Enfield, Tracy L. Green of Bradford, and Kendra L. Gardner of Hinsdale; by astepgranddaughter, KristieMacElman, of Bennington; by five great-grandchildren: Dylan Green, Kyle and Brandon Gardner, HunterLarabee, and Parker Cavanna; and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters: Alice Masterbone of New Britain, Connecticut, and Hazel Moultroup and Arlene Walker, both of Island Pond; and by an infant daughter, Nancy Dee Gardner.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, May 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ricker Funeral Home in Lebanon. Services will be held at St. Helena's Parish in Enfield on Saturday, May 20, at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be held in Lakeview Cemetery in Enfield following the service.

Loretta A. Rabida
Loretta A. Rabida, 88, of Island Pond died peacefully May 12, 2006, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton.
Mrs. Rabida was born June 25, 1917, in Island Pond, a daughter of Ernest and Amanda (Morrissette)Boutin.
On November 22, 1937, she married Leo Elwin Rabida, who predeceased her.
She was a member of St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Island Pond and was very active with St. John the Baptist Council No. 186, serving as treasurer for many years.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting, making personal items for family members, playing cards with her family members, tending to her plants, as she was known to have a green thumb, and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Lucille and Lucian Major of Richmond and Helen and Steven Shedd of Milton; by her six grandchildren: Diane Bouchard and her husband, Pierre, Amy Moriarty and her husband, Tom, of Bennington, Christopher Major of Richmond, Kristy Thompson and her companion, Michael Carpenter, of New York, Brian Shedd and his companion, Nina Lavigne, of New York, and Melissa Shedd and her friend, Andy Lambert, of Milton; by three great-grandchildren: Tatum and Haley Bouchard and Grace Carpenter; by her sisters Dorothy Lapage of Verdon, Quebec, and LauriaLantendresse of St. Herbert, Quebec. She was predeceased by five brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services were held May 16 at St. James the Greater Catholic Church with the Reverend William Morgan celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond.

Dale Gibney Sr.
Dale Gibney Sr., 79, of Newport died in Newport on Thursday, May 11, 2006.
Mr. Gibney was born in Newport on December 19, 1926, a son of Arthur and Doris (Wheeler) Gibney.
He entered the U.S. Army on March 13, 1945, and was honorably discharged on November 29, 1946. During his life he worked construction and owned and operated Gibney's taxi and moving business.
He was a member of American Legion Newport Post No. 21.
He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.
On January 1, 1959, he married Charlotte Bronson, who predeceased him on June 6, 2003.
He is survived by his children: Joanne Daggett and her friend, Antonio Maneca, of Newport, Daniel Ross and his wife, Diane, of Newport, Dale Gibney Jr. of Newport, Doris 'Dee Dee' Gibney and her friend, Todd Skinner, of Johnson, and Arthur Gibney and his wife, Jennifer, of Newport; by his sister BerdeanaBaraw of Newport; by 13 grandchildren; by 20 great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings: Lillian Rowe, Gordon Gibney, and IlaSpinelli.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 17, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 2 p.m. Interment will follow at the Lake Road Cemetery in Newport Center.

Derrick Thomas McMichael
Derrick Thomas McMichael, 51, of Newport died suddenly in North Troy on Tuesday, May 9, 2006.
Mr. McMichael was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on February 11, 1955, a son of Thomas and Margaret (McLachlan) McMichael.
He was employed by Olymel as vice president of sales of processed meats in the U.S. in Boucherville, Quebec, for the past 13 years.
He enjoyed golfing, swimming at the beach, and skiing.
On June 20, 1987, he married Karen Cesaretti, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Rosemary McMichael of Key West, Florida, Jason McMichael and his wife, Celina, of Kennebunkport, Maine, Heather McMichael of Palmyra, New Jersey, and Ashley McMichael of Newport; and by his grandchildren Emma Burcham and AnelaMcMichael.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 12 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating. Interment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport.

Francis Holden Colegrove Jr.
Francis Holden Colegrove Jr., 65, of Wisconsin, a longtime summer resident of Barton, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, May 21, 2006.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and foster father. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, and all those whose lives he touched.
He was a proud 38-year employee of Harley-Davidson and loved to ride his Harley. He enjoyed his time spent in his Lake Willoughby cottage with his family and friends.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 43 years, Judy; by his children: Todd Colegrove and his wife, Wendy, MatthewColegrove and his wife, Wendy, Tracy Vetta and her husband, John, and Jonathan Colegrove; by six grandchildren: Joel, Joshua, Madeline, and Rachel Colegrove and Christopher and Caitlin Vetta; and by other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held May 24 at the Brookfield Congregational United Church of Christ in Brookfield, Wisconsin.

Philip 'Babe' DiPietro
Philip "Babe" DiPietro, 81, died Wednesday morning, May 24, 2006, at his home in Barton with his wife, Pat, by his side.
Mr. DiPietro was born in Haddon Heights, New Jersey, on October 1, 1924, the only son of Jean Cinelli and Philip DiPietro.
He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II where he served as a member of the First Marine Division (B-17) during the first battle on Guadalcanal. He was in subsequent battles in the Pacific and served in China and the United States until his discharge in 1946.
For many years he worked at his family's restaurant, Cinelli's Country House, in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. He realized his lifelong dream of owning his own restaurant in 1981 when he established the Lincoln Covered Bridge Inn in West Woodstock.
He was an avid golfer, skier and hunter and was an incredible cook.
He died as he lived, a friend to all. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him, especially his wife, Pat.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hallowell DiPietro, of Albany; by his daughter Diane DiPietro; by his grandchildren: Paul, Victoria, and Katherine Giblin of May's Landing, New Jersey; by his son Philip DiPietro of Florida; by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Catherine and Alden Sheehan of Albany; and by his loving family of caregivers at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton.
A graveside memorial service was held May 27 at the Albany Village Cemetery with the Reverend Walter A. Quigg of Ocean Grove, New Jersey, officiating.
