Betty J. SCHUTZ

Age 77, born December 21, 1924 in LaSalle, Illinois, passed away July 25, 2002 at her home in Des Moines. Betty moved to the Seattle area from Champaign, IL. in 1985. She lived in the Edmonds area until moving to Wesley Homes in Des Moines recently. She had worked as a registered nurse for many years, also as a volunteer nurse and teachers' assistant for the Edmonds and Puyallup School Districts. She was a member of the Edmonds United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband George of Des Moines, son Steve and his wife Mary of Puyallup, daughter Pamela McCarthy and her husband Dan Kish of Seattle and a sister Marilynn Turczyn of Peru, Illinois. A Memorial Service will be held 2:30 p.m. Saturday, August 3 at Wesley Homes Garden Building, 815 S. 216th St. in Des Moines. Memorials may be sent to the A.L.S. Foundation or to the Wesley Homes Foundation, 815 S. 216th St., Des Moines, WA. 98198. (Obit dated 07/28/2002.)

Lieselotte "Lottie" SCHWARTZ

Died July 19th, 2002 at age 86 and was reunited with her beloved husband, Fritz. Born in Magdeburg, Germany on March 7th, 1916, her interesting life spanned two continents. She was dedicated to her family, her career, and she and Fritz enjoyed traveling in their retirement years. She was gifted with a great sense of humor and wit. When hosting parties, for family and friends alike, every guest enjoyed a healthy dose of German hospitality, great conversation, friendship and terrific German Food. And how wonderful were those picnics at Hood Canal. Surviving her are two daughters, Barbara Rizzo (John), Everett, WA, Traute Bushley (C.David), Weston Ct. and her son, Hanspeter Schwartz (Sandra), Tucson, AZ. In Germany, a brother, Dr. Werner Bandel (Elsbeth), Wuppertal and several cousins in Berlin survive her. Remembering her are 10 Grandchildren, 14 Great-grandchildren and 2 Great-great grandchildren. A private family celebration of her life will be held at a later time. Our family wishes to express our gratitude to the entire nursing staff of Madeleine Villa Health Care Center in Marysville, WA for providing her with excellent and loving care during the last 6 months of life. Wilma May SCOLLICK

Wilma May SCOLLICK, 91, born May 30, 1911 in Rockvale, CO. to William and Mary Adams, passed away peaceful ly on July 25, 2002 in Auburn, WA. Predeceased by her husband Sam and granddaughter Wendy, she is survived by her sons Bob (Barbara) Scollick, Dick Scollick and Ted (Irene) Scollick; daughters Donna Dickinson and Jane (Gary) Sturgis; grandchildren Rick, Tim, Brian, Brenda, Beth, Todd, Steve, Robyn, Marcie, Debbie, Kevin and Kim; great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Joshua, Tiffany, Josiah, Brianna, Timothy-John, Kassandra, Madison, Catlyn, Kyle, Garren, Grace, Arron, Hannah, Essence, Ada May, and Ann, and one great- great-grandchild, Jaden. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, August 3, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Queen Anne Baptist Church, 2011 - 1st Ave. N., Seattle. Patricia Helen SEIDENSTRICKER
12/29/26 - 7/26/02

Patricia died on July 26, 2002. Her husband Robert of 56 years was by her side when she passed away. She was born a twin daughter to Irish immigrant parents in the "Bed-Sty" neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. During World War Two she met a young soldier named Robert from eastern Washington and a lifelong romance ensued. What she later described as her "Amazing Journey" this young war bride-to-be boarded a train at the marbled-columned Grand Central Station in New York City and then stepped off four days later at a pot belly stove-equipped depot in the small town of Cashmere, Washington. Patricia was delighted to be living in the "Wild West" as her husband completed his engineering degree at Washington State College. The couple settled in the Seattle area and Robert pursued his career as a Boeing engineer. Patricia kept her life focused on raising their four daughters. Patricia is survived by her husband Robert Seidenstricker and their four daughters, Barbara (Carlos Toledano), Diane (Steven Stewart), Patty Jo, and Melanie (Robert Banel). Grandchildren include Christopher, Stephanie, Gabriela, Carlos, Victor, Annie and Lily. Great-grandchildren include Selena, Marshall, and Blaize. Niece Patricia Doll and husband Barry. Family friends Stella and Lloyd Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, and five brothers and two grandchildren. Patricia possessed the Irish "Gift-O-Gab" and she could and would talk to anyone about any thing at any time. Her humble beginnings blessed her with a character that was rich with empathy and sharing. She was loving and easy to love. With her "Fighting Irish" spirit and the strength of her faith, she gave cancer a good fight. But it was her time to leave to start on a new "Amazing Journey" and her family and friends will miss the twinkle of her big blue eyes and her hearty laughter. Sleep well with the angels, Dearest Darling, until we all meet again. Good Bye and God Bless. The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, July 31, 2002 at 11 a.m. at Saint Anthony's Catholic Church, 314 - S. Fourth, Renton, Washington, 98055. Burial will follow at Tahoma National cemetery, 18600 - S.E. 240th, Kent. (Obit dated 07/29/2002.)

Evelyn L. SHEPPARD

Was called to be with her heavenly father on July 23, 2002. Evelyn was born in Seattle, Washington in 1930 and graduated from Issaquah High School. She was a loving and dedicated wife and mother who took great joy in guiding her children and grandchildren through life's challenges and chosen occupations. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gene W. Sheppard, and her children: Sherry Sheppard, Victoria and Ken Rice, Gregory and Bonny Sheppard, Julie and Leif Carlson, Randall Sheppard and Rebecca and Kevin Clark. She so greatly enjoyed her activities with 8 wonderful grandchildren. A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2002 at Acacia Funeral Home, 14951 Bothell Way N.E., Seattle, WA. The family suggest remembrances may be made to Northwest Harvest. (Obit dated 07/27/2002.)

Evelyn Jane SHIELD

Age 78, went to be with the Lord July 26, 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Shield. She leaves behind her children, Suzanne (Patrick) Paxton of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kathryn Shield of Woodinville, WA, David Shield of El Dorado Hills, CA, Lee Ann McMahan of Everett, WA, and Frank Shield of Seattle. She was the proud grandmother of Kimberly, James, Jonathan and Alexa Shield, Steven, Jennifer and Christina McMahan, and Alexander and Elizabeth Paxton; and great- granddaughter, Makayla Duncan. She will be greatly missed by her dear friend, Beth Wind sor. She enjoyed her nursing career and ballroom dancing. Recitation of the Rosary will be Saturday, August 3rd, at 9 a.m. fol lowed by the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., BOTH at Blessed Sacrament Church. Interment, Mt Pleasant cemetery. Rod SHIVELEY

Born May 20, 1937 in Chalmers, Indiana. passed away July 29, 2002 from complications of colon cancer. He spent much of his life in Seattle as a businessman though his lifelong loves were college basketball and jazz music. As a professional pianist he was often seen performing around the area most recently with the Melvin Peterson Quartet. In the '80s and early '90s he was one of the main pianists at Lofurno's Restaurant. He leaves to grieve his wife Karen Denard Shiveley, sister Ramona Wessel of Dallas, TX, daughters Kanda and Lora, son Michael, stepson Sean Denard, grandsons Anthony and Austin and former wife Pat. The date for a Celebration of his Life will be announced. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made in his memory to KUOW FM, public radio.

Ronald L. SHORT

Ronald L. SHORT, 55, of Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Joplin, MO. died at 9 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2002. He died in Little Rock, Ark. with his wife by his side. He had been in Little Rock for several weeks for health related treatments. Ronald was born March 5, 1947 in Joplin, MO. to Ray mond and Maxine Douglas Short. He was a graduate of Joplin High School with the Class of 1965. He received his accounting degree from Missouri Southern State College. He was a highly decorated veteran of the Viet Nam war. He has lived in Minneapolis for the last 4 years moving there from Seattle, Wa. He was in real estate investments. He is survived by his wife Lyda Puleston Short, parents Raymond and Maxine Short of Rogers, Ark., daughter Amy McDonald & her husband Zach, Jacksonville, N.D.; 4 brothers, Scott Short & wife Vicki, Grove, OK., Doug Short & wife Barbara, Rogers, Ark., Mike Short & wife Diana, Joplin, MO., Roger Short & wife Mary, Webb City, MO.; two grandchildren, Lilah & Micha McDonald. Memorial Services 11 a.m. Saturday at Thornhill-Dillon Mortu ary Chapel, Joplin. Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.

Robert "Bob" E. SIMMONDS
April 6, 1919 - July 27, 2002

Bob was born in Seattle to Robert W. Simmonds and Ethel L. Bennett. Bob was a descendant of Robert Travers, an immigrant to Port Angeles and Princess Sally of the Clal lam Tribe in Clallam County. Bob worked at the Bon Marche florist department and roller skated at the Ridge Rink in Greenwood. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served at Camp Doty on the Olympia Peninsula. A veteran of World War II, Bob joined the Coast Guard and served in Portland, Oregon and St. Petersburg, Alaska. He was a member in good standing of the Teamsters Union Lo cal 174, retiring in 1984. Bob was a member of Northwest Archers and received their Big Game Award for hunting with a bow. He joined the Alpental Volunteer Ski Patrol in 1969 and received the Inspiration Award his first year. He was with the Patrol for 20 years retiring at age 70. Bob is survived by his be loved wife of 33 years, Gayle Reichel Simmonds; four daughters, Pam Bakke (Charles Lang), Bellingham, Washington; Debbie Provo (Eli), Corbett, Oregon; Rebecca Skyles (Jim), Beaverton, Oregon; Robin Mikels (Jasen), Cameron Park, California; and five grandchildren, Ian, Joshua, Drew, Mikayla and Ryan. The Memorial for Bob is on Thurs day, August 1, 2002 at 2 p.m. in the LDS Church at 14901 30th Ave. N.E., Shoreline, Washington 98155 on the lower level of the building. Flow ers or cards may be brought/delivered to the Church after 1 p.m. on Thursday or sent to the family home at 13279 15th Ave. N.E., Seattle, Washington 98125. Leonard "Lonnie" Eugene SMALDINO

Leonard "Lonnie" Eugene SMALDINO, 47, Lonnie's life was senselessly taken on July 20, 2002 while vending at the Gorge. Vending was what Lonnie loved to do. Ten years ago he realized a life dream, when he opened his first Sports Warehouse Store, by the Kingdome. Lonnie was known as a beloved and inspirational employer, who helped and inspired many in the area, whether they were employees or just down on their luck. Lonnie, beloved son of Harry E., (Gene) Smaldino, and beloved brother of Laurie Smaldino, was born in Seattle on October 29, 1954. He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola. A descendant of a pioneer Snohomish family, Lonnie graduated from Ballard High School in 1972. Lonnie was also a journeyman pressman, working with his father in the family owned printing business. He loved outdoor sports and became an excellent scuba diver. He especially enjoyed spending time away from his work at his property in the mountains near Cle Elum. Lonnie will be greatly missed by his family, friends and employees. Viewing will be Mon., July 29th, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Hoffner Fisher & Harvey Chapel 508 N. 36th St., Seattle Memorial Service will be held Monday, August 5, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, 1st Ave. N.W. & N.W. 80th Street, Seattle. Chester G. SPRINKLE

Born May 27, 1918, entered into eternal rest July 28, 2002. Chester, born in Tacoma, Washington, spent the bulk of his life in the protection and caring for others. Chester answered the call during WW II by serving in the Navy aboard a destroyer fighting in the Pacific Theater. Chester joined the Seattle Police Department in 1947 where he served as a detective. Two years later he was to join the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, where he served for two years. As he wanted his family to return to the great Pacific Northwest, he left and rejoined the Seattle Police Department, where he served with the Narcotic Detail until he retired in 1970, to assist with the forming of a State Investigative Unit to eradicate illicit drugs from our community. During his years with SPD he was instrumental in the passing of drug laws by working with Olympia legislators. Chester is survived by, Dorothy, his loving wife of 64 years; two sons, Ronald (Mapleton, Oregon), Larry (Kingston, WA.); two grandsons; and two great grandchildren. Chester will always be remembered by family and friends alike as "A man who cared". Services will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2002, at 12:30 p.m., at Bonney-Watson Washington Memorial Park, 16445 International Blvd., SeaTac, WA. 98188, where he will be buried following services. Rest in peace, Chester, we will see you a little further down the road. Arrangements by BONNEY-WATSON (Obit dated 07/31/2002.)
