Patricia Rita DINNING
Age 70, a woman of great strength and determination, died November 4, 2000.
Born Patricia Rita Davie in Bellingham on July 5, 1930, she was orphaned as a child.
Hospitalized for much of her youth with tuberculosis, she defied doctor's predictions of an early demise, recovered and went on to marry and raise a family in south Seattle.
Though her childhood illness kept her from attaining much formal education, she had a quick mind and a never-ending curiosity about life.
She was very active in the PTA and routinely volunteered her time and energies to school and other local community projects in the Rainier Beach area.
Pat taught Sunday school at the neighborhood Presbyterian Church and was a Cub Scout den mother.
She took great pride in having been a driving force behind the creation of South Shore Middle School in the early 1970s.
As her children grew older, Pat went to work outside the home in the 1970s as the education secretary at Temple D'Hirsch Sinai on Capital Hill.
In 1980 she took employment as a secretary for the Graduate School of Communications at the University of Washington.
By the time she was forced to retire in 1998 because of her health, Pat had attained the position of graduate program coordinator.
During that time Pat was instrumental in establishing, maintaining and expanding computer labs at the School of Communications.
She was also an unofficial counselor and surrogate mother to many a grad student far from home.
When planned budget cuts threatened the continued existence of the School of Communications, she rallied support from alumni, students and faculty to bring political pressure to save the School.
After her retirement, Governor Locke signed a proclamation declaring April 15, 1999 'Patricia Dinning Day' in recognition of her tireless efforts for the School and most of all for its students.
In her free time Pat became an avid and accomplished photographer and enjoyed learning more about the latest in computer technology.
She never tired of the beauty of her native Washington, and also enjoyed traveling outside the state.
Pat took particular pleasure in her trips to the Hawaiian Islands and took many beautiful photographs to preserve those memories.
After Pat's husband Irving passed away in 1980, she shared her home with her son Ron and his wife Susan.
Her grandchildren, Jennifer and John, soon after became part of the household.
Jennifer and John received immeasurable benefits from growing up with their grandmother, and gave her much pleasure in return.
Pat is also survived by her daughter Patty, who now resides in Bingen, Washington.
She will be greatly missed by her family and the many students she helped throughout her career.
No services at her request.
Remembrances may be sent to the University of Washington School of Communications at PO Box 353740, Seattle, WA. 98195-3740. (Obit dated 11/07/2000.)
