James A. MUNOZ
10/8/61 - 6/19/01

At 4:02 p.m. on June 19, 2001 Jim Munoz passed on from this world to the next. He had lived with HIV/AIDS for over 20 years, valiantly fighting to survive. As one of the early pioneers in this epidemic, Jim found himself often fighting the bureaucracies of health insurance companies. Nothing would rile him up more than when an insurance company would deny benefits, "Because there was no known cure." Jim is survived by his Partner of nearly 15 Years, Jon W. Scott, Jr. His parents Mary Munoz of Vallejo, CA and Louis and Terry Munoz of Concord, CA. He is also survived by four siblings, their spouses and their children. They are: Louis and Caren Munoz (Christian, Alex and Stefan) of San Dimas, CA; Teresa and Russell Green of Port Orchard, WA (Kyle, Tyler and Chelsea); Liz and Rich Beezley (Ryan and Kristin) of Broken Arrow, OK; and Tony and Cynthia Munoz of Clarksville, TN. He loved and adored his nieces and nephews with all his heart and often said that one of his greatest disappointments was that he would not live long enough to see them graduate from High School and College or to see them wed. Working within the Catholic schools, both high schools and colleges, Jim was able to speak to students on the importance of fighting for those who didn't have a voice. He was a firm believer in the Catholic faith and was a member of Immaculate Conception Church. He never believed that his God was a God of hate and retribution, but rather one of love and compassion. Jim had a strong will - but the love and compassion of his partner Jon and their many, many friends gave him strength and courage to keep fighting. From his early days at St. Patrick's High School (Vallejo, CA) he found that his niche was politics. He furthered his involvement when he went away to college at St. Mary's College in Moraga, CA where he was elected Freshman class President. In 1981 he transferred to UCLA to pursue a degree in Political Science and Economics. He also transferred his love of politics. He served as UCLA College Republican Chair, California College Republican Chair, and interned with the California Republican Party. After graduating from UCLA he sought a job in politics and landed a job on the staff of US Senator Slade Gorton (1984). He went on to serve on the staff of former Seattle City Council member Martha Choe and current Seattle mayor Paul Schell. He also worked on many political campaigns including those of his friend Rep. Ed Murray. Jim was also very active in many community-based organizations. From the time he and Jon moved back to Seattle from Boston in 1989, he knew that he had to become involved in the politics of AIDS. He was an early member of ACT- UP, AIDSWATCH, the Seattle Commission for Lesbians and Gays, Rosehedge, The Privacy Fund, Hands Off Washington and the Northwest AIDS Foundation. He also found that he had other gifts to share with community organizations such as the Catholic AIDS Ministries Speaker Bureau, Queen City Community Development and many others. It was in the fight against AIDS that he found a gift in which he was able to give back to the community. He helped lead the fight to open up clinical trials for compassionate use for those people who had AIDS but who did not meet the criteria that the pharmaceuticals had set. He was proud of the community in which he and Jon lived. One of his last acts was to serve on the Board of the up-and-coming Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Community Center. It was Jim's wish that the Seattle GLBT community have a center that they could call home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at St. Joseph's Catholic Church (18th & Aloha) on June 25, 2001 at 5 p.m. The Rev. David Jaeger, a long time friend of Jim's, will officiate. Although Jim will be cremated, half of his ashes will be given to Jon to have scattered across the ocean and the other half will be inurned in All Souls cemetery in Vallejo, CA. In lieu of flowers, please make your contributions to Rosehedge AIDS Housing, 12718 15th Ave NE, Seattle, 98125 or to the Seattle Gay Culture Center, 1122 East Pike Street, PMB 1010, Seattle, 98122.
