James Nichols
James LeRoy Nichols, 66, of Poulsbo died Oct. 16, 1999, in Poulsbo.
He was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Yakima to Elmer and Josie (Witt) Nichols. He grew up in Washing-ton.
Mr. Nichols served in the Marine Corps Special Forces from 1951 to 1954. His military honors included the United Nations Medal, the Korean Service Medal with two stars, the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
After leaving the military, he went to work for Aero Jet General in California, where he worked on many of their space missions. In 1966, he became a field engineer with Lockheed. He was the Lockheed technical representative to Squadron 17 at the Naval Submarine Base at Bangor.
In 1992, Mr. Nichols was the first in his department to receive the Willis Willoughly Reliability, Maintain Ability & Quality Assurance Award. Throughout his employment with Lockheed, he received other awards and many letters of appreciation. He retired in 1998 after 31 years.
Mr. Nichols was a member of the Sons of Norway and the Eagles in Poulsbo, the Elks in Bremerton and the North Sound Brewers Club. He was also a certified NAUI instructor.
Survivors include a son, James of California; a daughter, Susan Doyle of Illinois; and two grandchildren, Jonathon Doyle of New York and Marcy Doyle of Illinois. He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Mudd Mixon, in 1997.
A private family service will be held. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Heart Association, 4414 Woodlawn Park Ave. N, Seattle, WA 98103-7499.

Emilia Camacho
Emilia Q. Camacho, 71, of Bremerton died Oct. 19, 1999, at her home.
She was born Aug. 21, 1928, in Agana, Guam. She was raised and educated in Guam. She had lived in Bremerton for the past four years.
She was a homemaker and an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton.
Survivors include five sons, Frederick, Raymond, and Scott, all of Bremerton, and Floyd and Joseph, both of Yona, Guam; four daughters, Gloria Rivera, Diana Salas, Victoria Santos and Ruth Baza, all of Bremerton; 36 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service and burial will take place in Leyang Barrigada, Guam. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Elna Baker
Elna Rosalie Baker, 89, of Bremerton died Oct. 21, 1999, at Forest Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born March 20, 1910, in Black Diamond, Wash., to Vitalis and Clothilde (DeMan) Marckx. She attended schools in Black Diamond and in Franklin, graduating from Franklin High School in Seattle in 1928.
In 1937, she married Leslie H. Yeast in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 1941.
She married Robert A. Baker in Seattle in 1945. He preceded her in death in February of this year.
Mrs. Baker had owned and operated a small business, Draperies by Elna, in West Bremerton for a number of years. At that time, she was active in many business, professional and social organizations.
Survivors include two sons, Clyde of Bremerton and Ralph of Gresham, Ore.; a daughter, Carol Burk of Bremerton; a brother, Jack Marckx of Seattle; two sisters, Regina Whitehill and Ada Marckx, both of Seattle; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial celebration for both Robert and Elna Baker will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Illahee Manor. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel with cremation at Cherry Grove Memorial Park.

Jean Schmitt
Jean A. Schmitt, 66, of Port Townsend died Oct. 19, 1999, in Port Townsend.
She was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Whitehall, Mont.
She married William J. Schmitt on Jan. 17, 1952, in Anchorage, Alaska.
She and her husband owned and operated a construction business. She retired in 1976.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Donald of Redmond, William of Everett and Edward of Arlington; four daughters, Linda Thomas, Susan Wastell and Katy Fishel, all of Juneau, Alaska, and Anna Shields of Port Angeles; three sisters, Donna Casper of Vancouver, Wash., Lee Maddock of Kent and Harriett Walthour of Corona, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael, a sister, Billie Harrington, and a brother, Ed Muldoon.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. today at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church of Port Townsend. Arrangements are under the direction of Kosec Funeral Home in Port Townsend.

Lee Goninan
Clarence "Lee" Goninan Jr., 67, of Port Orchard died Oct. 20, 1999, in Yuma, Ariz., after a battle with cancer.
He was born March 20, 1932, in Brainerd, Minn., to Helen (Erickson) and Clarence Goninan Sr. He moved with his family to Washington in 1942. He was raised and educated in Poulsbo.
Mr. Goninan served in the Army for 22 years, achieving the rank of sergeant major. He served two tours of duty in the Korean War and three tours of duty in the Vietnam War.
He received 13 Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, a Silver Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Korean Service Medal.
After his retirement from the Army, Mr. Goninan worked as an auto mechanic until working at Fort Lewis Army Base as a director of instructors. Eight years later, he transferred to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, working in Shop 02 as a heavy duty mechanic. He retired in 1994.
He married Shirley Payseno Bunnell on March 20, 1981, in Bremerton.
Mr. Goninan was a past president of Eagles Aerie 2338 in Port Orchard, a past president of Ramblin' Eagles RV Club, had served as vice commander of the Military Order of the Purple Hearts, was past governor of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1538 and had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2669, American Legion Post 30, American Vets Post 4, Disabled American Veterans and the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife; his father and stepmother, Clarence and Beryl Goninan Sr. of Lebanon, Ore.; two sons, Clarence III and Stanley; a daughter, Therresa; an adopted son, Roger of Tacoma; an adopted daughter, Lorraine of Tacoma; four stepdaughters, Donna Lunsford, Deanna Olson, Sherri Mathews and Susan Amende of Port Orchard; a stepson, Roy Bunnell Jr.; two brothers, Robert of Poulsbo and David; a sister, Nancy Campbell of Silverdale; several grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A funeral service is planned Monday at Sunset Vista Funeral Home in Yuma. Interment icon will follow at Sunset Vista cemetery with full military honors.

Ole Olson
Retired Navy Capt. Clarence Everett "Ole" Olson, 84, of Port Ludlow died Oct. 6, 1999, at Jefferson General Hospital in Port Townsend.
He was born Feb. 8, 1915, in Lake Park, Minn., to Carl and Hilda (Erickson) Olson. The oldest of four children, he lost his parents when he was 9 years old and was raised by his grandparents. He graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., majoring in pre-med.
He married Pauline Mihalak on July 28, 1945, in Washington, D.C.
Capt. Olson served in the Navy from 1937 to 1969, during World War II, in Korea and in Vietnam. He was a naval aviator, participating in the Battle of Midway, flying rescue missions and submarine patrols.
He was part of a secret project called the IFF system (identifying friends or foe), as well as working on radar in its early years. During the Cold War, he was chief of staff of the Iceland Defense Force in Keflavik, Iceland, and also a naval attache' at the American Embassy in Oslo, Norway. He later became commandant of the Naval ROTC at the University of Wisconsin during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Karen Laubenstein of Palos Verdes, Calif., Kirsten Johnson of Hartland, Wis., Lauren Spallino of Maui, Hawaii, Jeannie Olson of Port Townsend and Susan Schafer of Mount Vernon; a sister, Ethel Burnside of Hawley, Minn.; and 11 grandchildren, Brittany and Michael Laubenstein, both of Palos Verdes, Ross and Claire Johnson, both of Hartland, Wis., Thomas and Christian Spallino, both of Maui, Tyler and Andrew Brahe, both of Port Townsend, and Tara, Chad and Evan Schafer, all of Mount Vernon.
A memorial service was held at Grace Lutheran Church in Port Townsend. Memorial donations may be made to Diabetes Research, Virginia Mason Research Center, 1100 Ninth Ave., Seattle, WA 98101.

Lorraine Loebner
Lorraine (Renstrom) Loebner, 80, of Bremerton died Oct. 17, 1999, in Everett. She had lived on Naval Avenue in Bremerton for more than 46 years.
She was born Jan. 19, 1919, in Huxley, Iowa. During her high school years, her parents, Blanche and Eugene Foy, moved their family to the Bremerton area.
In Bremerton, she met George Renstrom, marrying him in January 1938. He preceded her in death in 1981.
She was later married to Ernest Loebner. He preceded her in death in 1992.
She was a homemaker and an active member of the Olympic chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Irene Greenleaf Guild of Children's Hospital.
Survivors include a son, Mark Renstrom of Bremerton; a daughter, Jan Wiszmann of Edmonds; three grandchildren, Andy Cole of Everett and Steven Cole and Samantha Wiszmann, both of Edmonds; and a brother, Richard Foy of Medford, Ore.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Masonic Temple in Bremerton.
Memorial donations may be made to Seattle Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 5371, Seattle, WA 98105-0371.

Paul Skogstad
Paul H. Skogstad, 82, of Union died Oct. 20, 1999, in Union.
He was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Eleva, Wis.
He and his wife, Gladys, were married July 8, 1939. She preceded him in death in 1987.
Mr. Skogstad served in the Army from 1944 to 1945. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
He was retired from a career as a sheet metal worker at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Survivors include a son, Pete of Union; three daughters, Hope Hood of Satsop, and Mary Lou Downey and Julie Young, both of Union; two brothers, Morris Ausen and Bud Skogstad, both of Eau Claire, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at McComb Funeral Home in Shelton. A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday at Hope Chapel in Shelton. Burial will take place at Shelton Memorial Park.
