Patricia Jones
Patricia Jean Jones, 68, of Poulsbo died Dec. 26, 1999, in Poulsbo of cancer.
She was born July 13, 1931, in Goldendale to Robert and Mabel (Lindberg) McEwen. She grew up in Glendale.
Survivors include her companion, Raymond Wood of Poulsbo; four sons, Marcus of Spokane, Stan of Troy, Ala., K.C. of Bremerton and Richard of Poulsbo; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. today at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel on the Hill.

Esther Stewart
Former Bremerton resident Esther Helen Stewart, 80, of Hoquiam died Dec. 24, 1999, at her home.
She was born March 27, 1919, in Spokane to Clifford and Helen Esther (Reynolds) Patterson.
She spent her early years in Spokane. Her family moved to Bremerton in 1929, then to Tracyton in 1935.
She graduated from Silverdale High School, serving as class salutatorian.
She married Arnold Merriman on July 21, 1937, in Tracyton. He preceded her in death in 1943.
She married Norman Stewart on Jan. 5, 1947. The couple became residents of Hoquiam in 1947. They were later divorced.
Mrs. Stewart had been employed for many years as a bookkeeper with Reiner's Sporting Goods Store, as well as other local businesses. Following her retirement, she volunteered with the Senior Companion Program through the Hoquiam YMCA.
Survivors include one daughter, Leslie Stephens of Aberdeen; two sons, Arden Merriman of Alaska and James Merriman of Port Orchard; four brothers, Claude, Frances, Lloyd and Charles Patterson, all of Bremerton; two sisters, Morna Blessing of Bremerton and Barbara Sleiertin of Newport, R.I.; 15 grandchildren, Teri Jones, Arden Merriman Jr., Michele Shilman, David Merriman, Andrew Merriman, Penny Meyer, Chris Patnode, Gretchen Davis, Jill Dickinson, Duane Merriman, Loren Merriman, Robert Merriman, Heather Stephens, Eric Stephens and Blake Stephens; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four brothers.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam. A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hoquiam. A graveside service and interment will follow at 11 a.m. in the Aberdeen Fern Hill cemetery.

Anne Vinaas
Anne Thompson Vinaas, 87, of Poulsbo died Dec. 26, 1999, at Martha & Mary Health Care Center.
She was born May 10, 1912, in Bangor to Anton and Serianna (Sira) Thompson. She was orphaned at the age of four, spending her early years in Bryant, then moved to North Dakota.
She graduated from Bisbee High School in Bisbee, N.D., and from Minot State Teachers' College in North Dakota in 1930. She returned to Seattle in 1932, attending Seattle Secretarial School.
She worked as a teacher in North Dakota, then came to Seattle where she took a position as a legal secretary until her marriage.
She married Melvin Vinaas on June 7, 1940, in Bode, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 28, 1990.
In 1948, her family returned to Washington, settling in Poulsbo. She then became the administrative assistant at Martha & Mary Nursing Home, retiring in 1976.
Mrs. Vinaas was an active member of the Sons of Norway and Poulsbo First Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Joanna Carlson of Poulsbo and Priscilla Wright of Battle Ground; one sister, Selma Netten of Seattle; four grandchildren, Jon Carlson of Bellevue, Anne Leaf of Boise, Idaho, Matthew Wright of Seattle and Brian Wright of Battle Ground; and one great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. A graveside service is planned for 11 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church cemetery in Poulsbo, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at First Lutheran Church.

Mel Mago
Melvin P. "Mel" Mago, 58, of Belfair died Dec. 23, 1999, at his home.
He was born June 14, 1941, in Oahu, Hawaii. He grew up in Hawaii.
Mr. Mago had worked as a heavy-duty equipment mechanic in northern California. He retired in 1988.
He was a member of the Northern California Hawaiian Club.
Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Dee; his parents, Wayne and Grace Mago of Turlock, Calif.; a daughter, Wannetta Spivey of Illinois; a stepson, Christopher Jensen of Belfair; a stepdaughter, Victoria Jensen of Vacaville, Calif.; three brothers, Eugene of Reno, Nev., Henry of Hayward, Calif., and Charles of Turlock; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 2:30 p.m. today at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Donald Damschen
Donald Eugene Damschen, 72, of Poulsbo died Dec. 23, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Jan. 21, 1927 in Havre, Mont., to Roy E. and Myrtle M. (Brockelsby) Damschen. He graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1945.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and continued in the reserves until he retired as a colonel in 1987.
Mr. Damschen began working for the U.S. Postal Service in 1949. He became Poulsbo's postmaster in 1972 and retired from that position in 1983.
He served as the chairman of the Tacoma Management Postmasters Advisory Committee. He was a member of the Sons of Norway, past president of the Poulsbo Noon Lions, and a member of American Legion No. 68 of Bremerton, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Poulsbo Eagles and the Elks. He was a coach in the PeeWee program for many years.
Mr. Damschen is survived by three sons, Dale of San Diego, Brian of Yuca Valley, Calif., and Jeffrey of Silverdale; three daughters, Paula Ryder of Cresskill, N.J., Laurie Johnson of Bremerton and Valerie Giles of Bremerton; a brother, Robert of Poulsbo; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and Dick.
A visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.
A funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sons of Norway, Lodge No. 44, P.O. Box 653, Poulsbo, WA 98370.

Isabel Cruz
Isabel Santos Cruz, 70, of Sinjana, Guam, died Dec. 17, 1999, in Baltimore.
She was born July 2, 1929, in Guam to Mariano Carbullido Santos and Theodora Cruz Babuta. She grew up in Guam and graduated from Western State College of Colorado in 1952. She earned her master's degree in educa-tion from the University of Guam in 1973.
She was a teacher for 40 years on Guam.
Mrs. Cruz is survived by her husband, Antonio Gogue Cruz; four daughters, Beatrice Quinene of Kew Gardens, N.Y., Cecilia Blaney of Port Orchard, Sylvia Burgess of Martinsburg, W.V., and Lucy of Sinajana, Guam; a sister, Regina Santos Sablan of Boulder Creek, Calif.; and eight grandchildren, Brianna and Anthony Quinene of Kew Gardens, N.Y., Shane and Michael Blaney of Port Orchard, and Koty, Isabella, Lucas and Mariana Burgess of Martinsburg, W.V.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Port Orchard. Burial will follow at Sunset Lane cemetery.

Irene Shaw
A. Irene Shaw, 71, of Suquamish died Dec. 22, 1999, in Bremerton.
She was born Sept. 20, 1928 in Wenatchee to Wilfred and Alice (Leckron) Morrison. She graduated from Vancouver High School and attended Clark College. She married Donald Shaw in 1992 on Bainbridge Island.
She worked on cruise missiles and aircraft as a computer specialist at Boeing Co., retiring in 1990.
She was a member of the Kingston Cove Yacht Club.
Mrs. Shaw is survived by her husband; two sons, Kim Matthews of Vancouver and Robert Matthews of Bellevue; a daughter, Deni Lee of Kingston; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Kingston Cove Yacht Club.
Memorials may be made to the Greater Kingston Kiwanis, P.O. Box 830, Kingston, WA 98346.

Thelma Kissinger
Thelma Fern Kissinger, 81, of Bremerton, died Dec. 22, 1999, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
She was born Nov. 24, 1918, in Lincoln, Neb., to Byron and Faye (Hill) Estes. She grew up in St. Joseph, Mo., graduating from high school there in 1936. She graduated from the University of Missouri with an education degree in 1940.
She married Walter Kissinger on May 15, 1942, in Bremerton.
She taught in the Central Kitsap School District for 22 years at Brownsville Elementary, Chico Elementary and Jackson Park Elementary and retired in 1977.
Mrs. Kissinger is survived by a son, Russell of Bremerton; and two grandchildren, Russell Jr. and Carrie Marie of Bremerton. She was preceded in death by her husband.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn cemetery. Arrangements are handled by Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Charles Hinson
Charles Eugene Hinson, 79, of Port Orchard died Dec. 22, 1999, at his residence.
He was born March 7, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., to Charles Percy and Lillian (Walke) Hinson. He grew up in Kansas.
He married Elsie Beverly Borg on Jan. 1, 1988, in Port Orchard.
Mr. Hinson served in the Army from 1941-1945. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and received a good conduct medal, an Asiatic Pacific service medal, an American defense service medal, a bronze star and a Philippine liberation ribbon. He attained the rank of sergeant.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1966 until his retirement in 1983.
He was a Mason.
Mr. Hinson is survived by his wife; two daughters, Cynthia A. Perry of Belfair and Lillian L. Belt of Independence, Kan.; a brother, Robert of Kansas; a sister, Alyce Hobbs of Kansas; three grand-children, Nicole Burns and Rodger Perry of Belfair, and Michelle Rakes of Inde-pendence, Kan.; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

LaVerne McLaughlin
LaVerne Helen McLaughlin, 78, of Poulsbo died Dec. 22, 1999, in Issaquah.
She was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Larned, Kan., to Daniel and Carrie (Kinkel) Tanner. She attended school in St. Louis.
She married Clinton Daniel McLaughlin on July 13, 1945, in St. Louis. He preceded her in death in 1995.
Mrs. McLaughlin was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Suquamish and St. Olaf's Catholic Church in Poulsbo. She volunteered at both churches for charitable events and was a member of the Legion of Mary.
Survivors include three sons, Patrick of Freeland, Tim of Kingston and John of Poulsbo; two daughters, Mary Haws of Poulsbo and Rose Burkette of Redmond; one sister, Ruth Fiesler of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grand-children.
Visitation is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel in Poulsbo, with a rosary following at 3 p.m. at St. Olaf's Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton.
Memorial donations may be made to Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 1117 Callow Ave. N, Bremerton, WA 98312.
