Arthur Schneider
Arthur Gerrit Schneider, 70, of Poulsbo died Nov. 29 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
He was born Dec. 14, 1928, in Yakima to Arie and Wilma (Schut) Schneider. He was raised and educated in Yakima.
Mr. Schneider served in the Navy from 1945 to 1947. He was a fireman second class, stationed in San Diego and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He received the World War II Victory Medal.
After the war, he worked for the Washington State Patrol from 1947 to 1949, inspecting cars in Eastern Washington. In 1949, he moved to Bremerton, becoming an apprentice at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Mr. Schneider returned to Yakima in 1953, to become an inventor. He invented and patented apple packing machines until 1958, when he went to work for Hanford.
After five years at Hanford as a machinist, he started his own company, Ana Craftsman, inventing motorcycle carriers and tire carriers for trucks. In 1973, he returned to Bremerton, working at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1989.
He married Carol Hale on Sept. 13, 1969, in Yakima.
Mr. Schneider was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lodge 4992 in Silverdale and Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Michael of Lake Symington, Steven of Eatonville, Ronald of Brownsville and David of Arkansas; two daughters, Teryl of Florida and Kathy Gibbons of Sacramento, Calif.; two brothers, Lauren of Federal Way and Lee of Canada; three sisters, Shirley Reichards and Donna Calloway of Brigham City, Utah, and Billie Presley of Whidbey Island; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Vinland Lutheran Church. Inurnment will take place at Vinland Lutheran Church cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.
Memorials may be made to Vinland Lutheran Church.

Keith Carden
Glenn "Keith" Carden Sr., 73, of Bremerton died Dec. 4, 1999, in Bremerton.
He was born Oct. 12, 1926, in Acme, Wyo., to James and Besse Carden. He grew up in Acme.
He graduated from Mason City High School in Coulee Dam in 1944, then received a degree in 1948 in electrical engineering from Washington State University in Pullman.
Mr. Carden served in the Army from 1944 to 1945.
He married Ramona Joanne Hink on April 9, 1949, in Coulee Dam.
He worked for Grand Coulee Dam from 1948 to 1952. From 1952 until his retirement in 1974, he was employed by Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in the Public Works Electrical Design Division.
Mr. Carden was a YMCA volunteer in Bremerton for many years. He served several terms on the organization's board of directors and on numerous committees, including fund-raising and building committees.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Glenn Jr. of Bremerton; one daughter, Lori Somerhiser of Bremerton; two brothers, Don of Tacoma and Lloyd of Sun City, AZ; one sister, Zana Hoffman Vermillion of South Dakota; and two grandchildren, Jill Carden and Evan Somerhiser of Bremerton.
A memorial handball tournament is planned for Jan. 7 through 9 at the Bremerton Tennis and Swim Club A celebration of life party will be held in conjunction with the tournament at 7 p.m. Jan. 8.
Arrangements are under the direction of Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to United States Handball Association, Junior Development Fund, 2333 N Tucson Blvd., Tucson, AZ 85716 or Kitsap Family YMCA, 60 Magnuson Way, Bremerton, WA 98310.

Sydney Loucks
Sydney R. Loucks, 81, of Port Orchard died Dec. 6, 1999, in Bellevue.
He was born June 13, 1918, on Vashon Island to Rodney and Vinita (New) Loucks. He grew up in Seattle, graduating from Queen Anne High School in 1938, and attending Edison Technical School in chef training.
Mr. Loucks served in the Army for four years in Africa during World War II.
Following his military service, he worked for the Bremerton Police Department for two years. He then was a chef and meat cutter at Washington State Veterans Home at Retsil for 25 years, retiring in 1974.
He married Elsie Laine on Sept. 12, 1953, in Seattle.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Drew of San Jose, Calif.; one daughter, Nanette Bollman of Enumclaw; one brother, Gordon of Port Orchard; and five grandchildren, Ben and Clark Bollman and Amy, Arron and Adam Loucks.
A private family gathering is planned. Inurnment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to The Care Center at Kelsey Creek, Hospice Unit, 2210 132nd Ave. SE, Bellevue, WA 98005.

Ada Stead
Ada Fern Perry Stead, 95, of Port Orchard died Dec. 4, 1999, in Port Orchard of natural causes.
She was born July 19, 1904, in Westhope, N.D., to Frank and Huldah (Hiatt) Perry. She grew up in the Westhope area.
She married James Edward "Jimmy" Stead on Nov. 21, 1923, in Lyleton, Manitoba, Canada. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Mrs. Stead had worked at the Washington Veterans Home at Retsil. She retired in 1972.
Survivors include one son, Darrell of Port Orchard; five grandchildren, Lorre and Ron, both of Olympia, Craig of Port Orchard, Darwin of Seattle and Kevin of Silverdale; 14 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her siblings and by a great-grandson, Brian Stead.
Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. A funeral service is planned for noon Thursday at Rill Chapel. Private interment will take place at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Heart Association, 4414 Woodland Park Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103.

Ruth Phillips
Ruth A. Phillips, 77, of Port Orchard died Dec. 4, 1999, at Harrison Hospital of heart failure.
She was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Aberdeen, S.D., to John and Ruth (Westlund) Black. She grew up in Harper, graduating from West Seattle High School in 1941.
She married Carl Phillips on June 17, 1944, in Yuma, Ariz.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of Grace Bible Church in Port Orchard.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, John of Seattle, Steven of Belfair and Robert of Hepzibah, Ga.; two daughters, Kerilyn Lemick of Chicago and Ruth Watson of Belfair; one sister, Marion Allin of Tacoma; six grandchildren, Tracy, Shelly, Pamela, Mathew and Lindsay, all of Belfair and Ashley of Chicago; and one great-grandchild. She also was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Black, in 1986, and by a granddaughter, Barbara.
A memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

William Cooper
Former Bremerton resident William W. Cooper, 60, of Sheridan, Wyo., died Nov. 30, 1999, at the Sheridan Veterans Administration Medical Center.
He was born April 23, 1939, in Lewistown, Mont., to Luke and Dortha (Gray) Cooper. He was raised and educated in Casper, Wyo.
Mr. Cooper served in the Army, stationed in Germany.
Following his Army service, he returned to Wyoming and then came to Bremerton, where he worked as a welder and planner at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He retired in 1993.
He married Linda Ulery on June 24, 1988, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Mr. Cooper played bass guitar in his own band for many years. He also was a member of the Eagles.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Allen of Port Orchard; and two stepsons, Daniel and Kenneth Ulery, both of Juneau, Alaska.
Private family services will be held at a later date in Casper. Arrangements are under the direction of Ferries Funeral Home in Sheridan.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Shirley Clement
Shirley R. Clement, 47, of Bremerton died Dec. 3, 1999, in Bremerton of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 11, 1952, in Denver to Raymond Roper and Darlene Koger. She grew up in Denver, graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School there in 1970.
She married Oscar Dean Clement in Denver in 1979.
Mrs. Clement worked as a teaching assistant for 11 years. She also volunteered as secretary for The Storehouse Counseling Center in Port Orchard and served as editor of The Supply Line newsletter, a publication of The Storehouse Church in Poulsbo.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Stephanie of Bremerton and Tiffany of Kennewick; and one sister, Beverly Boyer of Bremerton. She was preceded in death by her parents, her grandparents, Austin and Carrie Koger, and by a brother, Larry Miller.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday at The Storehouse Church on Viking Avenue in Poulsbo.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Clement Family Fund, c/o The Storehouse Church, P.O. Box 3037, Silverdale, WA 98383.

Gertrude Klein
Gertrude Klein, 78, of Port Townsend died Dec. 5, 1999, at her home. She had been a resident of Port Townsend for 45 years.
She was born June 25, 1921, in Bemidji, Minn., to William and Rose (Boulduc) Wagner.
She was a homemaker.
A celebration of her life is planned for 1 p.m. Sunday at The Highway 20 Roadhouse in Port Townsend. Arrangements are under the direction of Kosec Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Carol Preston
Carol Jean Preston, 48, of Poulsbo died Dec. 4, 1999, at Sunbridge Convalescent Center in Bremerton of cancer.
She was born Nov. 13, 1951, in Bremerton, to George and Jean (Tappe) Chrey. She grew up in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1979, and attending Western Washington University in Bellingham.
She served four years in the Air Force, stationed in Mississippi, Louisiana and Alaska.
Following her military service, she returned to Bremerton. She was employed as a clerk at the Naval Undersea Warfare Training Station at Keyport and later as a nuclear inspector at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
She married Richard Preston in Bremerton in 1985.
Survivors include her husband; her parents; one son, Cenneth; three brothers, Bill of Tacoma and Jim and Bryan, both of Seattle.
A memorial service is planned for 3 p.m. Saturday at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, with a reception following.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, 1100 Fairview Ave., Seattle, WA 98109 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
