Peter Nilluka
Peter Clement Nilluka, 73, of Kingston died Jan. 8, 2000, at Harrison Hospital.
He was born March 13, 1926, in Poulsbo to Mathis and Berit (Sirl) Nilluka. He was raised and educated in the North Kitsap area, graduating from North Kitsap High School.
Mr. Nilluka served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. He later worked for the Washington State Ferry System for more than
20 years as a lead shore maintenance man. He was retired.
He was a member of the Inland Boatman Union, the National Rifle Association and the Laplanders Association.
He married Beatrice Raub on Nov. 19, 1962, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Randal of San Jose, Calif., Gary of Everett, Tony of Bremerton, and Calvin and Mark, both of Kingston; six daughters, Linda Perham of Los Gatos, Calif., Janis Lemieux of Hoquiam, Sandra of San Jose, Wanda Steel of Scottsdale, Ariz., LaVerne Williams of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Leanne of Suquamish; one stepson, Leslie MacDonald of Bremerton; 24 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
Visitation is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo. Burial will take place at the Kingston cemetery.

Helen Lewis
Helen Viola Lewis, 96, of Poulsbo died Jan. 7, 2000, in Poulsbo.
She was born Sept. 26, 1903, in Ashland, Wis., to Frederick and Anna Peterson. She grew up in Seattle.
She married James Lewis in July 1941 in Seattle. He preceded her in death in 1971.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Umstattd of Mexico and Karen Cozza of San Jose, Calif.; one sister, Elizabeth Anderson of Tacoma; four grandchildren, Paul Cozza of Herndon, Va., Kristin Cozza Bick of Durham, N.C., and Jessica and Trevor Harmon, both of Seattle; and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday at Suquamish United Church of Christ. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Martha & Mary Health Care Center, P.O. Box 127, Poulsbo, WA 98370 or to Alzheimer's Research, c/o ADEAR Center, P.O. Box 8250, Silver Spring, MD 20907.

Catherine Pillings
Catherine Dorfuss Pillings, 77, of Poulsbo died Jan. 11, 2000, of brain cancer.
She was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Baltimore, Md.
During World War II, she worked for the secretary of state and the early United Nations in Washington, D.C. After the war, she married Edward Pillings.
Mr. Pillings attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., where Mrs. Pillings was involved in protocol in the office of the superintendent.
She completed her civil service career at the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Station at Keyport. The couple retired to Kitsap County in 1983.
She was a calligrapher, a Master Gardener with the Silverdale Garden Club and a recent president of the retired officers wives club. She volunteered at the Naval Undersea Museum and at Brownsville Elementary School.
Survivors include her husband of 53 years; two daughters, Carol Pillings of Bellevue and Laurie Pillings-Rinker of Corte Madera, Calif.; one sister, Ellen Dickens of Baltimore; and one granddaughter, Alexis Rinker of Corte Madera. She was preceded in death by a son, Gary.
A service is planned for noon Saturday at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton. A service also will be held at Holy Trinity Chapel at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point at 1:30 p.m.
Jan. 28.

Howard Vandeventer
Howard L. Vandeventer, 79, of Port Orchard died
Jan. 11, 2000, at his home.
He was born June 21, 1920, in Perry, Iowa, to John and Golda (Martens) Vandeventer. He grew up in Wilmington, Calif., graduating from Banning High School there in 1937.
Mr. Vandeventer served in the Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945, stationed in San Diego.
He married Ruth Bodily on Oct. 14, 1944, in San Diego.
Mr. Vandeventer worked as a longshoreman in California and in Seattle, retiring in 1985 after 35 years. He had been a foreman with Sealand in Seattle for 18 years.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include his wife; one son, David of Massachusetts; one daughter, Kris Ann Riddle of Port Orchard; one sister, Leila Rhoads of Portis, Kan.; three grandchildren, Marna, Zachary and Sara Riddle, all of Port Orchard; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
A funeral service is planned for 10 a.m. Friday at the Bremerton Stake Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Mullinex Road in Port Orchard. Interment icon will take place at Sunset Hill Memorial Park in Bellevue at 2 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Leah Braget
Leah Emmy Roseann Braget, 18, of Bremerton died Jan. 8, 2000, in Riverside, Calif.
She was born March 27, 1981, in Bremerton to Vicki Carson and Dale Braget. She grew up in Bremerton, attending Bremerton High School and Olympic College.
She had worked at Carter's Nursery in Bremerton in the summer of 1994 and on a fishing boat, the Northern Hawk last summer.
Survivors include her parents; one brother, Vern Hoskins of Bremerton; two sisters, Tina Keene of Kingston and Julie and Jamie Braget, both of Bremerton; and nieces, Lena Andrews and Shawnda Hoskins, both of Kingston.
An open house celebrating Leah's life will be held from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at her mother's home, 1201 Oyster Bay Ave. South, Apt. A, in Bremerton.
Memorial donations may be made to Victims Advocate in Riverside at (909) 955-5400.

Ina Cheyney
Ina Fay Cheyney, 62, of Seabeck died at her home of cancer on Jan. 4, 2000.
She was born March 6, 1937, in Mason City to John and Evelyn (Sumner) Steiner. She grew up in Home, attending Peninsula High School in Purdy.
She married Thorn Cheyney on May 20, 1955, in Lakebay.
Mrs. Cheyney was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Bruce of Port Orchard; three daughters, Arlene Comer of Bremerton, Debra Bell of Port Orchard and Patricia Pallanes of Silverdale; four brothers, John Steiner of Lake Cushman, Fred and John Beglau, both of Key Center, and Jerry Beglau of Auburn; one sister, Sherri Osinski of Tacoma; six grandchildren, Chastity Brown and Amy Kilham, both of Port Townsend, Jesse Shaw of Bremerton, Mike and John Bray, both of Port Orchard, and Noal Hall Jr. of Ronan, Mont.; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thorn "Little Thorn" Cheyney III, by a brother, Robert, and by a sister, Donna.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Friday at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.

Susan Waldron
Susan Marie Waldron, 45, of Eagle River, Alaska, died Dec. 31, 1999, at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma.
She was born March 26, 1954, in Elmhurst, Ill., to Elmer and Dorothy (Deschaur) Dunn. She was raised and educated in California, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana and Alaska.
She married John Waldron on Dec. 13, 1980, in Santa Maria, Calif.
Because of Mr. Waldron's military career, the couple traveled extensively. Mrs. Waldron had worked as a restaurant manager in various locations across the country.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Bryan of Okinawa, Japan, and Michael of Atlanta; her father and stepmother, Elmer and Veronica Dunn of Tyrone, N.M.; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Grandon and Sinette Waldron of Poulsbo; one brother, Tom Dunn of Albuquerque, N.M.; and two sisters, Mary Hix of Lee Summit, Mo., and Elisa Dunn of Lawrence, Kan. She was preceded in death by her mother in 1983.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today at Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel. Burial will take place at Santa Maria cemetery in Santa Maria.

Michael Field
Michael Brian Field, 21, of Bremerton died Jan. 9, 2000, in Bremerton.
He was born Nov. 24, 1978, in Tamuning, Guam, to John and Iris (Celoso) Field. He grew up in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1997 and attending Olympic College.
He recently worked at the Olive Garden restaurant in Silverdale.
Survivors include his parents, now of Bremerton; one brother, Matthew; and grandparents Judy Baker of San Diego and Marieta Celoso of Santa Rita, Guam.
Visitation is scheduled for 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Miller-Woodlawn Chapel on the Hill with a rosary at 6 p.m. Visitation will also be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Bremerton with a rosary at 10 a.m.
Rosaries will be said nightly at the Field home through Jan. 18. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with interment following at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Barbara Avery
Barbara Jean Avery, 68, of Bremerton died Jan. 9, 2000, at her home.
She was born Dec. 26, 1931, in Tacoma to Frederick and May Ann (Gans) Bitterling. She was raised and educated in Tacoma. She had been a resident of Kitsap County for 48 years.
She married Kenneth Avery on Sept. 9, 1950, in Manchester. They would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this year.
Mrs. Avery was a homemaker. She and her husband had worked for the Titans Junior Drum and Bugle Corps in the 1960s and 1970s.
She was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 3694 and the 8/40 Saloon 233.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Dennis of Bremerton and Danny of Alabama; one daughter, Kathleen Bollinger of Bremerton; one sister, LaVern Schmidt of Imperial Beach, Calif.; seven grandchildren, John Bollinger, Trindessa Schneider and Kenneth, Robert, Jarrett, Mellissa and Andie Avery; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel. A funeral service is planned for 1 p.m. Friday also at Lewis Funeral Chapel with entombment following at Hillcrest Mausoleum at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Esther Packer
Esther Marie Packer, 79, of Poulsbo died Jan. 8, 2000, in Bremerton.
She was born May 6, 1920, in Eatonville to James and Ida (Anderson) Carlson. She graduated from Washington State University and received her teaching certificate from Pacific Lutheran University.
She married Stephen Packer in August 1943 in New Haven, Conn. He preceded her in death in 1989.
She was an elementary teacher. She taught in Eatonville in the mid-1960s, later teaching in Hoodsport and Mossy Rock. She retired in the mid-1970s.
Survivors include four sons, Stephen of Portland, Ore., James of Olympia, Charles of Whidbey Island and John of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Marjorie Journey of Boise, Idaho, and Helen Andreef of Seattle; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. today at Hansville Community Church with a reception following at the Hansville Community Center. Arrangements are under the direction of Poulsbo Mortuary, The Stone Chapel.

Willard Doggett
Willard Leroy Doggett, 60, of Port Orchard died Jan. 7, 2000, at Ridgemont Terrace of complications due to cancer.
He was born June 4, 1939, in Wharton, N.J. He grew up in Daytona Beach, Fla., and attended high school there.
He served in the Navy from 1957 to 1961 at Fort Meade in Maryland. He retired from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in 1996 after 28 years.
He married Anita Louise Shook on July 18, 1975, in Port Orchard. She preceded him in death in August.
Mr. Doggett was a member of the Port Orchard Eagles and the V.F.W. of Port Orchard.
He is survived by a son, Jason of Bellevue; two step-sons, Everett Bowling of Seattle and Eric Bowling of Albany, Ore.; two step-daughters, Leonide Martin of Lynnwood and Lynette Burley of Everett; two brothers, Richard of Jacksonville, Fla., and David of Daytona Beach; two sisters, Barbara Clark of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Patty Phipps of Daytona Beach; and six grandchildren, Ryein Bowling, Brittain Bowling, Mitchell Bowling, Alexis Bowling, Renee Martin and Ty Burley.
A funeral service is planned for 2 p.m. today at Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel. Inurnment will take place at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.
