Amelia Benson
Amelia Benson, 83, of Bremerton died Oct. 4, 1998, of heart failure.
She was born March 24, 1915, in Yankton, S.D., to Peter and Magdalena (Nuss) Schock. She attended schools in South Dakota.
On April 3, 1970, she married Bruce Benson.
She worked on her family's farm as a beauty operator, in several retail positions and in a hospital kitchen. Most recently, she made her living as a tool room attendant in Shop 6 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, retiring in 1971 after 20 years.
Survivors include her husband; a stepson, Donald of Benton City; two daughters, Sharon (Cheri) Powers of Edgewood and Barbara Kluge Manica of Silverdale; a sister, Ann Beaber of Chehalis; six grandchildren, Terry and Tammy Kluge of LaPeer, Mich., Mark and Laurie Kluge and Robert and Barbara Kluge, all of Bremerton; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 17 at Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Frank Shepard
Longtime Bainbridge Island resident Frank L. Shepard, 82, died Sept. 29, 1998, at Swedish Hospital in Seattle.
He was born July 3, 1916, in Seattle to Dr. Frank Shepard and Charlotte (McEown) Shepard. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1934 and was the last surviving member of the 1933 district champion basketball team. From 1934-37, he attended Willamette University in Salem, Ore., and was a member of Sigma Tau fraternity. He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in business administration, and was a member of Chi Phi National Fraternity.
After high school, he worked as a deck hand on the Hanna C., transporting island strawberries to Ballard. He worked in Wrangle, Alaska, on the cannery tenders Reliance and La Tooshe. From 1939-43, he was purser/freight clerk for the Alaska Steamship Company, and sailed on the Aleutian, Baranof, Mt. McKinley, Columbia and SS Alaska, and became a charter Merchant Marine. From 1944-53 he was an American Mail Lines accountant and agent in Portland, Ore., and San Francisco; and from 1953-60 was owner of the American Transfer Co. He later worked as a real estate agent with Julia Minnick and Frank Dusek; as a contractor for Cedar Homes; was treasurer for the city of Bremerton from 1968-72, and director of finance for the city of Auburn from 1972-75. He retired to Bainbridge Island in 1975, where he continued to sell real estate for JRO Realtors, Wm. A. Eastman and Co., and Bainbridge Properties.
He was an active member of the Sigma Tau Alumni Association and Alaska Steamship Seafarers Alumni; past member of Multnomah Athletic Club, Portland; Washington Athletic Club, Seattle; Eagle Harbor Congregational Church; and Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, of Bainbridge Island; two daughters, Barbara Jean Black of Snohomish, and Charlotte Shepard of Bainbridge Island; three sons, Capt. Frank L. Shepard of Bainbridge Island, Dr. Mark F. Shepard of North Easton, Mass., and the Rev. John M. Shepard of Edmonds; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at noon Oct. 10 at Hillcrest cemetery, Old Mill Road, Bainbridge Island. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
Remembrances may be made to the Bainbridge Island Historical Society, or the Sigma Tau Scholarship Fund, Willamette University, 900 State St., Salem, OR 97301.

Lucille Doherty
Lucille Beatrice Doherty, 77, of Bremerton died Oct. 4, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 13, 1921, in Bainville, Mont., to Oval and Olga (Smith) Shower. She was raised in Missoula, Mont., graduating from high school in 1939.
On Nov. 18, 1939, she married Merl Doherty in Missoula, Mont. He preceded her in death in 1978.
After high school, Mrs. Doherty stayed home and worked as a housewife until her children were old enough for her to return to work. She worked for Harrison Memorial Hospital as a business office director and was known throughout the medical community. She finished her career at Olympic Anesthesiology.
She was a member of a bridge club in Bremerton and was a longtime volunteer at the Discovery Shop (American Cancer Society), also in Bremerton.
Survivors include a son, Howard of Issaquah; two daughters, Terry Bohannon of Port Orchard and Diane Horan of Silverdale; a sister, Laura Wontor of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Cremation will be at The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove.
Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 718 Lebo Blvd., Bremerton, WA 98310.

Eddie Jordan
Former longtime Port Orchard resident Eddie R. Jordan, 68, of Ocean Shores died from brain cancer Oct. 4, 1998, at his home.
He was born April 4, 1930, in Sedro Wooley to Bert and Blanche (Stratton) Jordan. He was raised in Acme, Wash., graduating from Mount Baker High School in 1948.
On Nov. 28, 1949, he married Dolores Willis in Mount Vernon.
Mr. Jordan served in the Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1968 as a master chief electrician. He later made his living as a staff chief engineer for 24 years with the Washington State ferries, until his retirement in 1992.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association in Bremerton, the Grays Harbor Gun Club and the NRA.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steven and Kenneth, both of Port Orchard; a daughter, Kathleen Shelton of Port Orchard; a brother, Merrill of Bellingham; a sister, Della Johnson of Bellingham; and five grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 9 at Wynooche cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Harbors Home Health and Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Neda Heng
Neda M. Heng, 77, of Retsil died Sept. 19, 1998, in Bremerton of natural causes.
She was born May 19, 1921, in Scotts Bluff, Neb., to Alva O. and Myrtle B. (Nickens) Williams. She was raised in Scotts Bluff.
On Feb. 14, 1958, she married Arndt J. Heng in Bremerton. He preceded her in death in 1993.
Mrs. Heng was a homemaker.
She headed the Cancer Drive, was active in Port Orchard/Retsil Parks and Recreation and was a member of the Women's League.
Survivors include two sons, Virgil of Felton, Calif., and Donald of Renton; two brothers, Eldon Williams of Parkridge, Ill., and Harvey Williams of Portland, Ore.; four grandchildren, Debbie Nigro of Bellevue, David of Prosper, Texas, Lolly Vann of Silver Springs, Md., and Theresa of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 2, with a funeral service to follow, both at Rill Chapel. Interment icon will be in Clay County, Minn.
Arrangements are by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Kitsap Unit, P.O. Box 2383, Bremerton, WA 98310.

James Kenney
James Kenney, 83, of Bremerton died Sept. 29, 1998, of heart failure.
He was born June 26, 1915, to Joseph Kenney and Nancy (Chance) Alzonia. He was raised in Harrison, Ark.
In 1953 he married Dorothy Dodds in Kodiak, Alaska.
Mr. Kenney served in the Navy from 1934 to 1954. He served in the Pacific and retired as a chief boatswainmate. During his career, he served aboard the USS Houston that was sunk in the Java Straight shortly after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a prisoner of war for the remaining three and a half years of World War II. He retired in 1974 after nine years at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
He was an active member of both the Fleet Reserve and the Ex-POWs.
Survivors include his wife; a son, George of Los Angeles, Calif.; a brother, John of Texas; three sisters, Erma Edwards and Imogene Cartwright, both of Arkansas, and Theresa Powell of Oregon; and one grandchild, Kristofer Kenney of Los Angeles, Calif.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 2 at the Family of God Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be at Miller Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to your favorite charity.

Lucille Wolcott
Lucille D. Wolcott, 86, of Bremerton died Sept. 30, 1998.
She was born May 4, 1912, in Ann Arbor, Mich. She was raised in Whitmore Lake, Mich., graduating from Eastern Michigan University in 1936.
On July 26, 1934, she married Clarence E. Wolcott. He preceded her in death in 1994.
Mrs. Wolcott was an elementary school teacher.
Survivors include a daughter, Carole J. Rasmussen of Silverdale; three grandchildren, Leif A. Rasmussen of Roy, Rick Rasmussen of Social Circle, Ga., and Kirsten McCall of Santa Monica, Calif.; and one great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by a son, John, in 1974.
There will be a private memorial service at a later date.
Arrangements are by Miller Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Central Kitsap Presbyterian Church.

Jean Neuer
Jean Elizabeth Neuer, 75, of Bainbridge Island died Nov. 24, 1998, after a long illness.
She was born Dec. 12, 1922, in Sacramento, Calif., to Harold and Elgeane (Leal) Norton. She was raised in California.
On Sept. 5, 1943, she married John Neuer.
Mrs. Neuer was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband; a son, John Jr. of San Jose, Calif.; two daughters, Lee-Ann Holland of Bainbridge Island and Patricia Best of Naples, Texas; and two grandchildren, Theresa Schmid of Suquamish and Liz Holland of Lake Tahoe, Calif.
A private service will be conducted.
Arrangements by Kass Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 111 Queen Anne Ave. N, Suite 300, Seattle, WA 98109.

Darlene Leaf
W. Darlene (Bradford) Leaf, 63, of Bremerton died Nov. 24, 1998, after a long illness.
She was born May 10, 1935, in Helena, Mont., to John and Loma Lee (Bowen) Bradford. She was raised in Bremerton, graduating from Bremerton High School in 1953.
On Sept. 27, 1986, she married Les Leaf in Bremerton.
Mrs. Leaf was a homemaker. She was a member of the Kitsap Peninsula Mycological Society.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Steve Lewis of Rockport, Texas, and Lee Lewis of Port Orchard; a daughter, Loma Rockwell of Bellevue; two stepsons, Kevin and Karl Masters; two stepdaughters, Kimberly Demming and Kathy Fish; six grandchildren, Cody, Jonathan, Darin and Kylie Lewis and Alex and Austin Rockwell; and seven step grandchildren, Tony and Amy Fish and Jessica, Casey, Benjamin, , Griff and Jordan Masters.
Visitation will be from noon to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 27, with a service immediately following, both at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2225 Perry Ave.
Arrangements by Tuell-McKee Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
