Ted Freemantle
Frederick William "Ted" Freemantle, 88, of Bremerton died May 31, 2002, of cancer at Naval Hospital Bremerton.
He was born Feb. 18, 1914, in Wallingford, Conn., to F.W. and Lillian (Sanderson) Freemantle.
He married Audrey McFee on Aug. 12, 1944, in New York City. She preceded him in death in 1999.
Mr. Freemantle served in the Navy from 1935 until his retirement as a chief warrant officer in 1955. He worked with submarines, seeing duty in the Pacific during World War II.
He worked many years at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Shop 56 as a pipefitter. He retired in 1971.
Mr. Freemantle enjoyed travel. He attended Bremerton Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Freemantle of Olympia and Ted Freemantle of Mill Creek; two daughters, Helene Dietzman and Dianne Freemantle, both of Bremerton; six grandchildren, Drew, Lori, Angela, Kyle, Jason and Scott; and six great-grandchildren, Nolan, Zoe, Zack, Katlin, Adam and Josie.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bremerton Church of the Nazarene, 924 Sheridan Road in east Bremerton.
Memorial donations may be made to Gideons International.

Jack Matzat Jr.
Former Bremerton resident Jack Robert Matzat Jr., 55, of Tacoma died June 1, 2002, in Tacoma.
He was born Aug. 17, 1946, in Bremerton to Jack and Dorothy (Vettleson) Matzat Sr. He grew up in Bremerton, graduating from West High School in 1965 and from Tacoma Community College in 1978.
Mr. Matzat served in the Air Force from 1966 to 1969, achieving the rank of sergeant. He was awarded the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Air Force Commendation Medal.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 22 years, retiring in 1995. He was a sheetmetal trainer.
Mr. Matzat enjoyed sports and politics.
Survivors include his father, now of San Jose, Calif.; three sons, Jason of Maple Valley, Joshua of Tacoma and Beau of Puyallup; two sisters, Deborah Shumake and Diane Fletcher, both of Bremerton; and one grandchild, Jacob. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Abrahamson.
A graveside service with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. June 19 at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Alice Pauw
Alice Janet Pauw, 87, of Poulsbo died June 8, 2002, in Poulsbo.
She was born Dec. 19, 1914, in Denver to Robert H. and Georgia A. (Dille) Abbott. She received her high school diploma from Colorado Women's College in 1932.
She received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Colorado in 1937 and earned her teaching certificate from Missouri University in 1972. She was also the recipient of a Phi Beta Kappa Award.
She married Adrian Pauw on May 30, 1941, in Denver. He preceded her in death in 1976.
Mrs. Pauw worked as a draftsman and artist.
She was a member of the Kitsap Spinners and Weavers Guild. She enjoyed woodworking and genealogy.
Survivors include three sons, M. John Pauw of Poulsbo, Derrick Pauw and his wife Nancy of Ottawa, Kan., and Peter Pauw and his wife Susan of Spokane; a daughter, Janet A. Adams and her husband Chris of Poulsbo; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert H. Abbott Jr., and her sister, June Abbott.
At her request, no services will be held. Cremation is under the direction of The Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.

Nori Hood
Lenora Ann "Nori" Hood, 38, of Bremerton died June 8, 2002, of thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura in Seattle.
She was born Feb. 11, 1964, in Bremerton to Robert Dean and Josephine Joyce (Theroux) Bradley. She completed her education in Bremerton and continued to live in Bremerton throughout her life.
She married Rolland Arness Hood on July 1, 1981, in Bremerton.
Mrs. Hood had worked as a tailor at Millie's Tux and Bridal for many years.
Survivors include her husband; her parents; two sons, Robert William Bradley and Richard Lee Hood, both of Bremerton; a daughter, Christina Marie Hood of Bremerton; and six sisters, Lavonne Peele, Lorraine Kay Deyo, Loretta Fay Brown, Lora Jean Zinter and Levita Marie Bradley, all of Bremerton, and Linda Jean Gross of Maryland.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at Lewis Funeral Chapel followed by a 1 p.m. funeral service also at Lewis and a graveside service at Forest Lawn cemetery.

Marcia Spring
Marcia Jean Spring, 80, of Allyn died June 7, 2002, at Orchard Pointe Memory Care Community in Port Orchard.
She was born Sept. 4, 1921, in Tacoma to Dukes and Margaret (Sharp) Towneson. She graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma.
She married Everett D. Spring on June 16, 1951, in Seattle.
Mrs. Spring had worked as a bookkeeper for Westinghouse at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport and with Deschamps Realty on Bainbridge Island. She retired in 1985.
She enjoyed flower gardening.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Cheryl Spring of East Bremerton; and a grandson, Marshall Loria.
Services are private. Arrangements are under the direction of Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County, P.O. Box 3416, Silverdale, WA 98383-3416 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Al Johnson
Former Bremerton resident Allen R. "Al" Johnson, 75, of Gig Harbor died June 5, 2002, at his home. He had lived in Bremerton for more than 40 years.
He was born March 6, 1927, in Helena, Mont., to Roy and Jesse (Nelson) Johnson. He graduated from high school in Oakland, Calif., in 1944.
Mr. Johnson served in the Navy from 1944 to 1952, achieving the rank of electrician's mate third class. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and a medal for service in the Korean War.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 35 years, retiring in 1982. He had also served as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician in the Bremerton area for more than 20 years.
He married M. Lynne Beffa on Jan. 10, 1985 in Bremerton.
Mr. Johnson enjoyed history and had been a docent at the Pioneer State Park in Utah. Other interests were hiking, scuba diving and exploring the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Johnson of Klamath, Ore., and Dan Johnson of Bremerton; a daughter, Laurie Gonzalez of Bremerton; three stepchildren, Doug of California, Eric of Texas and Holly of Silverdale; 27 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four foster daughters. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marion (Tally) Johnson, in 1984.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 8002 Rosedale in Gig Harbor. Inurnment will be at Miller-Woodlawn Memorial Park.

George Benbennick
Former Bremerton resident George L. Benbennick, 91, of Seaview died June 7, 2002, in Astoria, Ore.
He was born Oct. 5, 1910, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Michael and Tillie Prucha Benbennick. He was raised and educated in Bremerton.
He married Madeline Bardouche on Dec. 26, 1957, in Tennessee.
Mr. Benbennick lived and worked in Bremerton for most of his life. He was employed in automobile and mobile home sales and also operated a gas station.
Following his retirement in 1975, he and his wife moved to Seaview.
He had been an active Mason for more than60 years, with membership in Bremerton Masonic Lodge 117, Occident Masonic Lodge 99 in Ilwaco, Bremerton Demolay, the Scottish Rite of Seattle and the Shrine Nile of Seattle. He was also a member of Bremerton Elks Lodge 1181 and the Ocean Park Eagles Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; three stepdaughters, Sally Paulus of Wooster, Ohio, and Margie May and Nancy McInroy and her husband Richard, all of Long Beach; four nephews, Larry Emel of Elkton, Ore., Al Emel of Clatsakanie, Ore., and Steve Wooley and Tom Wooley, both of Drain, Ore.; a grandnephew, Russell Emel of Drain; a cousin, Vince Benbennick of Seaside, Ore.; and several other great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David Benbennick, and a stepdaughter, Jane Cox.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Occident Masonic Lodge 99, Spruce and Williams streets in Ilwaco. Arrangements are under the direction of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria.
Remembrances may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children.

Virgil Slade
Virgil Henry Slade, 86, of Bremerton died June 7, 2002, in Bremerton of heart failure.
He was born March 7, 1916, in Roberts, Idaho, to Claude P. and Ada Gladys (Pace) Slade.
He married Goldie Stone.
Mr. Slade was employed as a cabinet maker at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 31 years, retiring in 1972.
He enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by his wife. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharlot Slade.
Visitation was held Tuesday at Lewis Chapel followed by a graveside service at Forest Lawn cemetery in Bremerton. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. June 30 at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on Sheridan Road in Bremerton.

Dale Allen "Britt" Brittingham
Born April 2, 1922, in Hollister, California, Dale Allen Brittingham passed away at home on June 7, 2002. He is survived by Evelyn, his loving wife of 56 years, by his daughter, Lynn, son David, grandson, Travis, and nieces, Judy Van Schoiack and Pamela Cohen.
Dale was born on a fruit and dairy farm in Hollister, California, on April 2, 1922, to Walter and Eva Brittingham. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, James and William. His artistic talents were evident at an early age, and he was very proud to have some of his original work displayed at the 1935 California-Pacific International Exposition in San Diego. That was quite an accomplishment for a 13-year-old.
He graduated from High School in 1941, where he studied art and stagecraft. He did commercial sign work for local stores while in school, which then led to employment as a traveling sign and display man for a chain of fountain restaurants out of Watsonville, CA.
Dale joined the Navy in the fall of 1942, and served as an artist in the Visual Training Department at Farragut Naval Training Station, Idaho. This was followed by 2 and a half years as an artist at the C.V.E. Pre-Commissioning School at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, in Bremerton. While in the Navy he worked weekends for the Thomas Sign Co., and upon discharge was hired by them full time.
On May 10, 1946, he married Evelyn Filer at the First Christian Church in Bremerton, where both were active members and workers in the youth department. He continued to serve his church throughout his lifetime, and was an elder for many years.
In 1950 he entered into a business partnership with Art Goud, which lasted for 10 years as Art & Britt Sign Co. 1960 saw Britt going out on his own as Britt Signs and Commercial Art Service, which concluded with his retirement in 2001. During the '60s he also taught lettering and layout at night school for Olympic Community College in the Distributive Education Department.
Dale was known in the Bremerton area as a man of great skills, creativity, and moral integrity. It would be hard to look anywhere in the community without seeing a visible reminder of his talents. He was a man of deep Christian faith, and willingly served his church by sharing his time and God-given gifts.
A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church, 811 Veneta, on Saturday, June 15, at1 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to First Christian Church in Dale's name, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
We will miss your quiet manner and dry sense of humor, Dad, but we take comfort in the faith we share in a Heavenly home at the end of our Earthly journey.

Barbara "Pat" Wiles
Pat Wiles was born in Tacoma on April 3, 1919, and died at her home in Gig Harbor on June 4, 2002. She had lived in Gig Harbor most of her life.
All agree Pat was an amazing woman who lived a very full life. She was an active community volunteer in support of her four children and served in her church as choir director and soloist for a number of years. Pat started a long and successful career in 1956, and went on to work for a number of firms, including McDonald Real Estate and Harbor Pump & Drilling. In 1979, she became President of Harbor Water Company, and a whole new chapter of her life began. Under her leadership, this company grew to be one of the most successful privately owned water companies in the state. Pat was active in Home Builders Association of Kitsap County and the Building Industry Association of Washington, and was a founding member of the Independently Owned Water Utilities Association. She also served on numerous state and local commissions dealing with water quality issues. Following her retirement in 1984 as president of Harbor Water, she continued to serve the company as a consultant for regulatory and governmental affairs for private utilities until June 2001, when she fell ill.
She was widely recognized in the building and utilities communities, and received numerous awards, including Life Director for HBA of Kitsap County. In 1998, Pat was the first woman and non-builder inducted into the BIAW Hall of Fame.
Pat was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Luther "Ted" Wiles and her granddaughter, Alison Litzenberger. She is survived by her children, Caroline Litzenberger (Portland, OR), Gayle Erickson (Tacoma), Jack Wiles (Klamath Falls, OR), and Mary Bowlby (Tacoma), nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church at South 12th and Jackson Ave. in Tacoma at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 27, 2002. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the charity of your choice.
