George A. Bell
Former Issaquah resident George A. Bell, 38, died March 3, 2000, at his Algona home. A funeral service was March 10 at Mary Queen of Peach Catholic Church. Burial followed at the Hillcrest Cemetery icon in Kent. He was born icon May 5, 1961, in Seattle, the son of Joan and Sam Bell. The family traveled extensively during his childhood and returned to live in Issaquah in 1974. Mr. Bell made his home in the Seattle area until moving to Algona 10 years ago. He was employed by the Boeing Co. for 19 years as a computer network designer. In addition, he owned Espresso Mia in Auburn. During leisure time, Mr. Bell enjoyed riding Harley Davidson motorcycles, rollerblading, wood building and family. Survivors include his parents; a son, Leo Bell; grandmothers Robbie Bell and Johanna Colby; brothers Sam, Kevin, David and Christian; sisters Tami Rillera, Danna Collingham, KayLee Jaech and Sara Toney. Charlotte Schuller
Longtime Florida resident Charlotte Schuller, 87, died in Issaquah on Feb. 26, 2000. A private family memorial service was conducted. She was born icon on Oct. 3, 1912, in Chicago. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1933 with a degree in art. During the 1930s, she taught school in Wisconsin. Later, she became a travel agent. In 1936, she married icon Charles Schuller. The couple was married icon 59 years and lived in six states and traveled extensively abroad. The couple settled in Longboat Key, Fla., after retirement in 1974. Survivors include two sons, Richard Schuller of Seattle and Reid Schuller of Bend, Ore.; two brothers, Merrill Bennett of Sun City, Ariz. and Reid Bennett of Dallas; and two grandchildren. Rick Sherman
Rick Sherman, 55, of Issaquah, died on March 13, 2000, at Swedish Hospital Medical Center in Seattle. A memorial service was March 18 at the Community Church of Issaquah. Mr. Sherman was born icon on May 15, 1944, in Santa Barbara, Calif. He was raised in Oregon and graduated from high school in San Diego. Mr. Sherman served with the Navy in 1963-64. He married icon Stella Juarez on Aug. 7, 1971, in Reno, Nev. A graduate of California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo, Mr. Sherman worked for IBM in California before moving to the Issaquah area in 1980. He was employed by the Boeing Co. as a computer analyst manager for 20 years. In his leisure hours Mr. Sherman enjoyed hiking, fishing, photography and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of Issaquah; daughters Elisa and Monique of Issaquah; parents Rita and John Hawkins of Ocean Park; and brother Greg Hyde of Springfield, Ore. Christine Lehman
Former Issaquah resident Christine Ellen Lehman, 80, died March 11, 2000, at the Good Neighbors Home in Springfield, Ore. At her request, no services were conducted. She was born icon on April 14, 1919, in Chokio, Minn., the daughter of Clinton and Lila DeCamp. The family moved west and settled in Vancouver, Wash. In 1971, Mrs. Lehman moved to Issaquah. For several years, she was employed by United Control in Redmond. She also worked as an in-home caregiver and had a deep compassion for her clients. In 1985, Mrs. Lehman moved to Lacey, and later to Oregon. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Foreman of Brewster, Wash. and Quartzsite, Ariz.; two grandchildren, Tina Gates of Hayden, Idaho, and Shaun Foreman of Renton; and two great-grandchildren. Mary Ann Hanson
A memorial service for Mary Ann Hanson, 72, of Issaquah, is at 9:30 a.m., April 8, 2000 at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 2650 148th S.E., Bellevue. Mrs. Hanson died April 2 in Seattle. Mrs. Hanson was born icon on Aug. 9, 1927 in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of William and Grace Godejohn. She was raised in Clayton, Mo., and graduated from Clayton High School. She received a bachelor's degree from Washington University in St. Louis. She married icon Arnold Hanson in 1964, and he preceded her in death in 1993. Mrs. Hanson moved to Issaquah in 1994. She was a member of St. Andrews Lutheran Church. Mrs. Hanson is survived by her brother, William Godejohn of Fall City; and two nieces, Ann Godejohn and Paula Pyatt. Eugene O. Johnson
A funeral service for Eugene O. Johnson, 55, of Renton, is at 1 p.m. on April 4, 2000 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home, 540 E Sunset Way, Issaquah. Mr. Johnson died on March 29, 2000. Mr. Johnson was born icon on April 25, 1944 in Palermo, N.D., the son of Palmer and Mabel Johnson. He was raised in North Dakota and moved to the Renton area in the early 1960's. Mr. Johnson was employed by The Boeing Co. as a mechanic. He was a member of the Issaquah Eagles. In his leisure time Mr. Johnson enjoyed carpentry and bowling. He was preceded in death by one brother, Odin Johnson and one sister, Ethel Balch. Mr. Johnson is survived by his son, Scott E. Johnson of Renton; his daughter, Brandi J. Johnson of Federal Way; three brothers, Selmer Johnson of Colorado, Raynold Johnson of Plaza, N.D., and Marvin Johnson of Stanley, N.D.; two sisters, Carol Nichols of Seattle and Beverly Ward of Minot, N.D.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Frederick Lovejoy
Frederick Bentley Lovejoy, 90, of Bellevue, formerly of Issaquah, died on March 29, 2000, at Cascade Vista in Redmond. A private family service was at the Sunnyside Cemetery icon in Coupeville. Mr. Lovejoy was born icon on June 1, 1909, the great grandson of Capt. Thomas Coupe (for whom Coupeville is named), grandson of Capt. Howard Bentley Lovejoy (pioneer settler of Coupeville, Whidbey Island, in 1855), and son of Edwin Owen Lovejoy (boat builder and owner of an early sawmill at Coupeville), and Flora Cranney Lovejoy, granddaughter of Capt. Coupe. Mr. Lovejoy graduated from Coupeville High School and Hall School of Commerce in Seattle and attended the University of Washington. He was a life member of Alumni Association and Sigma Chi Fraternity, and a charter member and past president of the Sahalee Country Club. His first employment with American-Hawaiian Steamship Co. lasted for 15 years until its entire fleet of 28 ships was commandeered for government use in the World War II. Subsequent employment with Everett Pacific Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. (a Pacific Car and Foundry subsidiary) was for 12 years, followed by 14 years at PACCAR's Renton division, from which he retired in 1974. Survivors include his wife, Jane of Bellevue; sons F. Bentley Lovejoy of Bellevue and William Lovejoy of Vancouver; daughter Jane Littlefield of Bellevue; six grandchildren and two great granddaughters. John Wicks
John Joseph Wicks, 79, died on March 25, 2000, at LakeRidge Social Care Center in Moses Lake. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. April 15 at Issaquah Christian Church with pastor Steve Grice officiating. Mr. Wicks was born icon on May 15, 1920, in Star, Ore., the son of the late Joseph and Lois Ione Wicks. He was raised and educated in Cottage Grove and Springfield, Ore., and graduated from Thurston High School. He served in the Army on Adak Island as a firefighter and as a medic on the Aleutian Island Chain during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946. Mr. Wicks married icon Marjie Lea Pruitt on April 25, 1942, in Thurston, Ore. In 1962 they moved to Fall City. She preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 1996. Within the following year, Mr. Wicks moved to Moses Lake to be near his son. Mr. Wicks was an active member of the Christian Church in Issaquah, and also had been active in the Preston Baptist Church and the Thurston Christian Church before moving to Fall City. In his leisure hours, Mr. Wicks enjoyed hunting, gardening, fishing, building and fixing various items and old cars, and spending time with the fellowship and friends in the church. Survivors include sons Bennie Wicks of Ellensburg, Peter and wife Susan Wicks of Moses Lake, John and wife Barbara Wicks of Alderwood Manor, and Stanley and wife Pam Wicks of Woodinville; daughters Christine and husband Jim Nichols of Stanwood, and Marilyn and husband Jerry Ronnei of Chewelah; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert Brauer
Sammamish resident Robert Joseph Brauer, 85, died on April 8, 2000, at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. A funeral service was conducted on April 14 at the Rockman Funeral Chapel in Chester, Mont. Burial followed at the Whitlash (Mont.) Cemetery. Mr. Brauer was born icon on July 29, 1914, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Rudolph and Marjorie Brauer. He attended school in Oakpark, Ill., before earning an engineering degree from Grinell (Iowa) College. Mr. Brauer worked in the purchasing department of Seattle's Union Oil Company for more than 20 years. He began his own business in 1964, working as a manufacturer's representative for Besco Building Specialties in Bellevue and Issaquah. His business manufactured signs and identifying devices. Mr. Brauer married icon Lois Schafer on Dec. 27, 1966, in Bellevue. The couple lived in the Redmond/Sammamish area for most of their married icon life. Mr. Brauer sold his business and retired in 1981. In his free time, he enjoyed stamp collecting, fishing, gardening, reading, card playing and raising German shepherd dogs. Mr. Brauer is survived by his wife of Sammamish; a niece, Carrie Engstrom of Sammamish; and two nephews, Mark Engstrom of Whitlash, and John Leonard of Seattle.

Manley Jenkins
Manley Jenkins, 87, of Trenton, N.C., died at home on April 10, 2000. Funeral services were April 14 at Friendship Free Will Baptist Church in Jones County. Rev. Don Fader and Dr. W. Burkette Raper officiated. Mr. Jenkins was born icon and raised on a farm in Jones County, N.C. He and his wife Mildred moved to New Bern, N.C., in 1941 to start a family. Although he worked for the state for more than 25 years, he remained a farmer all his life, first on the farm he bought in 1949, and later on the family farm in Jones County. Mr. Jenkins was a longtime member of Friendship Free Will Baptist Church, the Farm Bureau and a Weyerhaeuser Tree Farm Family. In his leisure hours, he enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren riding behind his tractor, digging potatoes, and caring for pigs, cows and chickens. He was a helpful man, devoted to his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 59 years; daughter Martha Jenkins Bernabeo and her husband Rick of Hartford, Ct.; sons Ron Jenkins and his wife Susan of Coats, N.C., Don Jenkins and his wife Ann of Sammamish, Dan Jenkins and his wife Martha of New Bern, N.C.; brother Ray Jenkins of New Bern, N.C.; sisters Rachel Daugherty of Kinston, N.C., and Elizabeth Jenkins Davis of Trenton, N.C.; and eight grandchildren. Thomas Webber
Thomas Paul Webber, 43, of Issaquah, died on March 31, 2000, in Lake Forest Park. A funeral mass was April 17 at Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church on the Sammamish Plateau. A committal service followed at Upper Hillside Cemetery icon in Issaquah. Mr. Webber was born icon July 4, 1956, on Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, Ill., the son of Paul and Barbara Webber. He was raised primarily in Endicott, N.Y. In 1973 he and his family moved to Redmond. Mr. Webber graduated from Lake Washington High School in 1974. He attended Bellevue Community College before pursuing a career in sales. In April of 1984, he moved to Issaquah. In his leisure time Thomas enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and colleagues, playing softball, cycling and hiking. Survivors include his parents of Issaquah; brother William Webber and his wife, Bonnie, and their four children of Enumclaw. Arrangements are by Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home.

Jean Marie Ruscoe Hess
Jean Marie Ruscoe Hess, 80, of Phoenix, Ariz., died on April 16, 2000. Services will be conducted April 27 at St. Michael's All Angels Episcopal Church, 325 S.E. Darst St. in Issaquah. Mrs. Hess was born icon on March 4, 1920, in Watefield, Kan., the daughter of Horace Ruscoe and Lena Ogle. She married icon Leroy Hess on April 17, 1947. Mrs. Hess was a member of St. Michael's Church in Issaquah for 41 years. She and her husband resided at Providence Point for a time. Survivors include her husband; daughters Christine and Dena; son Ronald and his wife, Christine; and sister Dorothy Wyss of Junction City, Kan. Arrangements are by Arizona Aftercare.

Carolyn Van Nisbet
A memorial service for Carolyn Van Nisbet, 94, of Issaquah, is 1 p.m. April 30, 2000, by Sammamish Congregational United Church of Christ, located at Trinity Lutheran College (formerly the Lutheran Bible Institute). Mrs. Nisbet died at home on April 11. Mrs. Nisbet was born icon on Jan. 23, 1906, in Cass City, Mich., the daughter of Harry Pearl and Lucy Glendora Lee. She was raised in Cass City, where she graduated from high school. Following high school she attended Pratt Institute of Fashion Design in New York City. On Sept. 26, 1931, she married icon Allan Botha Dirkse van Schalkwijk. He preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1970. On Oct. 9, 1971, she married icon Herbert J. Nisbet. He preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 1979. Mrs. Nisbet was a dress designer, manager and buyer in the retail clothing industry. In May 1990, she moved to Providence Point in Issaquah. She was a member of Ikenobo Ikebana Society of America and various garden clubs, including at Providence Point and in Skokie, Ill., and Bloomfield Hills, Mich. Her special interests included spending time with her family and friends, genealogy, Ikebana flower arranging and gardening. Mrs. Nisbet is survived by two daughters, Deborah V. McConnell of Sammamish and Carolyn V. Schroeder of Sequim; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Virginia Amarant
A funeral service for Virginia Amarant, 78, of Providence Point, is at 11 a.m. on May 18, 2000, at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. A Burial will follow at Tahoma National Cemetery icon in Kent. A time of visitation for family and friends is 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. on May 17 at the funeral home. Mrs. Amarant died on May 15 in Seattle. She was born icon on Oct. 9, 1921 in Arkansas City, Kan., the daughter of William and Velva Walters. The family moved to California when she was 6 years old. She was a graduate of San Ramon High School, and she married icon her high school sweetheart, Norman J. Amarant, in June 1940. In 1998 she and her husband moved to Issaquah. Mrs. Amarant enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and also playing bridge. She was preceded in death by her brother, Billy Walters. Mrs. Amarant is survived by her husband of Issaquah; two daughters, Sandra Carlos of Las Vegas, Nev., and Pamela Crayton of Bellevue; brother Howard Walters of Sacramento, Calif.; sister Mina Jo Reis of Sonora, Calif.; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Jewel E. Bergstrom
Jewel E. Bergstrom, 71, of Preston, died at home on May 3, 2000. A memorial service was May 12 at the Preston Baptist Church. Mrs. Bergstrom was born icon on March 30, 1929, in Whitewater, Mont., the daughter of John and Margaret Jenson. At an early age she and her family moved to Oroville, where she was raised. She graduated from Othello High School in 1947. She married icon Dean A. Bergstrom on May 8, 1950, in Preston. They made their permanent home in Preston in 1951. For 25 years Mrs. Bergstrom was employed by the Issaquah School District in food services. She was a member of the Preston Baptist Church, Vasa Lodge, Washington School Food Services Association and the American School Food Services Association. In her leisure hours she enjoyed cooking and hospitality. Survivors include her husband of Preston; sons Dean Eric Bergstrom of Issaquah and Dan Arnold Bergstrom of Easton; daughter Ann Karine Armstrong of Preston; brother Michael Jenson of Anacortes; sisters Anna Karine Leibrand of Scobey, Mont. and Margie Helen Barth, of Spokane; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Robert J. Findlay
Robert J. Findlay, 81, of Maple Valley, died at home on May 13, 2000. Funeral services were May 16 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Bellevue. Private burial was at Tahoma National Cemetery icon in Kent. He will be interred in St. Olaf Cemetery icon in New Richland, Minn. Mr. Findlay was born icon on March 6, 1919 in Braceville, Ill., the son of Robert and Pearl Findlay. He was raised in Illinois and married icon Eleanor Marie Sallade on Aug. 21, 1941 in Lemont, Ill. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific. He was a master carpenter all his life and enjoyed gardening in his leisure time. He moved to Redmond in 1954 and then to Issaquah in 1975. He had lived in Maple Valley since 1979. He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 24, 2000. Survivors include his daughter, Gloria R. Dorothy D. Frost
Dorothy D. Frost, 86, of Preston, died on May 3, 2000 in Duvall. A memorial service was held May 13 at the Preston Baptist Church. Mrs. Frost was born icon on April 19, 1914, in Olympia, the daughter of David and Emaline Morris. She married icon Merton Harold Frost on May 18, 1937. The family moved to Preston in 1944. She was a member of the Preston Baptist Church. In her leisure time she enjoyed sewing and assisting her granddaughter with her horses. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975. Dwight V. Hall
Dwight V. Hall, 93, of Issaquah, died on May 11, 2000, at Providence Marianwood in Issaquah. A reception in his memory will be at the Issaquah Senior Center. Mr. Hall was born icon on Oct. 24, 1906, in Guthrie, Okla., the son of Orville and Nona Hall. He was raised in Oklahoma City and attended the University of Oklahoma. He married icon Mary Zigar on Feb. 13, 1955 in Las Vegas, Nev. The family lived in Southern California for many years, where he worked for Douglas Aircraft. He moved to Issaquah in 1995. In his leisure hours Mr. Hall enjoyed riding motorcycles, restoring old cars, and spending time with his friends and family. Survivors include his wife of Issaquah; daughters Susan Garfield of Los Angeles and Julie Kato of Issaquah; sister Eleanor Achgill of Houston, Texas; and five grandchildren. Irvin N. Knutson
Irvin "Bud" Neprud Knutson of Issaquah died of cancer on May 12, 2000 at his Providence Point home. He was 84. He was born icon on Sept. 25, 1915 in Blair, Wis., the son of Irvin N. and Minnie (Neprud) Knutson. He spent his youth living in Coon Valley, Wis., and graduated president of his class from nearby Westby High School in Westby, Wis. After attending St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., he was employed by the Westby-Coon Valley State Bank. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin School of Banking. He married icon Ruth H. Romine of New Richland, Minn., in Rockford, Ill, on Nov. 9, 1935. After living several years in Coon Valley and Westby, he moved his family in 1954 to Kirkland, where he was manager of the Citizens Bank of Kirkland. He joined the National Bank of Commerce (now Bank of America) in 1955 and served as manager for branches in Ellensburg, Clarkston, Renton and Seattle before retiring from RainierBank in 1980 as a vice president and loan officer. He lived in Bellevue for 36 years before moving to Providence Point in 1997. Mr. Knutson was an Eagle Scout. He served on several boards and was a charter member and past council officer of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Bellevue. He also was involved in Rotary and the Chamber of Commerce of Renton. Preceding him in death was his wife of 60 years. He is survived by three sons, David R. Knutson and wife Marilyn of Tacoma, Dr. Dennis D. Knutson and wife Mary Ann of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Dean P. Knutson and wife Jill of Issaquah; daughter Jean E. Greif and husband Frank of Seattle; two brothers, Lincoln V. Knutson of Westby, Wis. and James E. Knutson of Coon Valley, Wis.; a sister, Genevieve Weigel of Sunnyvale, Calif.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Virginia Sloan
Virginia "Ginger" R. Sloan, 81, of Issaquah died on May 11, 2000, at The Care Center at Kelsey Creek in Bellevue. A memorial is May 17 at Sheldon Sloan's home, 3903 Meadow Ave. N. in Renton. Mrs. Sloan was born icon on Oct. 16, 1918, in Centralia, the daughter of David and Manda Self. She was raised in Centralia where she graduated from high school. She married icon Ken Sloan in 1937 in Seattle. She and her husband moved to Issaquah in 1968. Mrs. Sloan was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Centralia before moving to Issaquah. In her leisure hours she enjoyed working in her garden, and taking care of her cat. She was preceded in death by her husband in December of 1996. Elsa Hussey Young
Elsa Hussey Young, 90, died on April 26, 2000, at Providence Marianwood in Issaquah. A service was May 5 at Snoqualmie United Methodist Church. Officating at the ceremony were Rev. Mary Brown and Rev. Earl Dean. Mrs. Young was born icon on July 6, 1909, on the family farm in Roxbury, Maine. She was raised in Roxbury and Canton, Maine, and then traveled to New York as a young woman to work as a nanny. She married icon Howard Young on Oct. 24, 1930, in Brooklyn, N.Y. They returned to Maine to live and work with their parents on their farms. In 1945 they moved to Bremerton. During World War II, Mr. Young worked in the Naval Shipyard, and with the end of the war the family moved to the Snoqualmie Valley. Mrs. Young served on the board of directors at Mount Si Senior Center and Snoqualmie Methodist Church. She played the organ and sang in the choir at the Methodist Church. She also managed the food and clothing Bank in North Bend. In her leisure hours Mrs. Young taught Sunday school, worked on fundraisers with the "Ladies Aide," and spent many mornings preparing a "country breakfast" for friends and family. She was preceeded in death by her husband in 1977. Survivors include four sons, Sam and wife Masako Young of Silverdale, Frank and wife Sandy Young of Pensacola, Fla., Jim and wife Jan Young of Snoqualmie, and Bob and wife Deb Young of Pensacola, Fla.; daughter Sally and her husband Larry Van Kirk of Issaquah; sister Wilma Richards of West Brook, Maine; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchilden; and numerous nieces and nephews.
