Gunvald R. Foss
Gunvald R. Foss died May 21, 2000, at his Issaquah home. He was 91. At his request, no services will be conducted. Mr. Foss was born icon on April 20, 1909, in Norway, the son of Christian and Inga Foss. He was educated in Norway, graduated from high school and later from Oslo Music Conservatory, specializing as a school music teacher. He also worked as an organist for the Norwegian Lutheran Church. While in Norway he also served with the Norwegian Royal Guard. He came to the United States with his wife and children in 1951. In this country, he worked at various jobs, the last being at Clark Elementary School in Issaquah. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Marie, of nearly 64 years, of Issaquah; three children, Rick Foss of Wapato, Vickey Jacobson of Issaquah and Inge Stovner of Fairfax, Va.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Edward W. Kortnik
Former Issaquah resident Edward W. "Ed" Kortnik, 76, of East Wenatchee, died May 14, 2000, at his home following a brief illness. Funeral services were May 18 at Telford's Chapel of the Valley, with Pastor Jerry Beebe officiating. Interment icon followed at Evergreen Memorial Park. Mr. Kortnik was born icon on July 12, 1923, in Cle Elum, the son of Matt and Johanna Kortnik. He was raised and attended school in Cle Elum. Mr. Kortnik joined the United States Army and served as staff sergeant under Gen. George Patton. He served in France, Germany and Austria before receiving his honorable discharge in 1946. He went on to graduate from Washington State University with a degree in civil engineering. He married icon Gayle Barkley Headley on Jan. 23, 1954, in Shelton. They lived in the Seattle, Bellevue and Issaquah areas for nearly 30 years before moving to East Wenatchee in 1984. Mr. Kortnik spent a year working for the Bureau of Reclamation in Ephrata, four years working for the Washington State Highway Department in Yakima, and 26 years with the City of Seattle Engineering Department. He retired in 1977 and spent several years working part time as an engineering consultant. In recent years Mr. Kortnik volunteered at Central Washington Hospital and worked for the East Wenatchee Safeway. He served as past commander of VFW Post No. 3436 in Issaquah, past charter member of BPOE Lodge No. 2546 in Issaquah and past president of the Washington State Chapter of APWA. He also was a member of the Wenatchee First Assembly of God, and the WSU Cougar Club and Alumni Association. His wife preceded him in death in 1990. Survivors include cousin Mrs. G.H. Hemmen of Fullerton, Calif.; niece Kathi Neva of Mill Creek, nephew Rian Patterson of Puyallup; brother-in-law Lee Barkley of Minnesota; and special friends the Johnson family of Rock Island. Sarah Fay
Sarah Fay, 104, of Issaquah, died on May 26, 2000, in Easton. A graveside service was held on June 2, 2000 at Hillside Cemetery icon in Issaquah. A reception followed at the Issaquah Senior Center. Mrs. Fay was born icon on Sept. 30, 1895, in White Sulfur Springs, Mont., the eighth of nine children born icon to Murray and Idella (Reeves) Crowe. When she was 4 years old, the family moved to Washington. Mrs. Fay graduated from Granite Falls High School. She married icon Earl R. Fay on June 30, 1913, in Everett. She and her husband owned and operated several restaurants and cafes in Leavenworth, Cle Elum and Easton. They moved to Easton in 1936 and on to Issaquah in 1956. At the time of her death she was residing at Beaver Lake. She was an avid lodge worker belonging to several organizations including Century Chapter No. 66 Order of Eastern Star, Zora Temple #5, Daughters of the Nile, Western Washington Grand Representatives, International Grand Representatives, Gilman Rebekah Lodge No. 59, International Order of Odd Fellows, Snohomish Ladies Encampment Auxiliary No. 25, Skagit Auxiliary No. 30 Ladies Auxiliary of Patriarchs Militant, Royal Neighbors of America, Cle Elum Auxiliary, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Issaquah Valley Grange No. 581, Beaver Lake Community Club and Issaquah Valley Senior Citizens. She was Past Matron of Roslyn Chapter, Grand Page in 1956, Grand Representative of Montana in 1959, all of the Order of the Eastern Star; Past Noble Grand of Gilman Rebekah Lodge and recipient of the Decoration of Chivalry. In her leisure hours, Mrs. Fay enjoyed cooking and gardening and general yard work. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl, and her daughter Lylia Walters. Survivors include son Rex of Easton; a granddaughter, great-granddaughter, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy Ida Hart
A funeral service for Dorothy Ida Hart, 88, of Issaquah, was held on June 5, 2000, at Flintofts Issaquah Funeral Home. Mrs. Hart passed away on June 2 in Bellevue. Mrs. Hart was born icon on Dec. 29, 1911, in Columbus, the daughter of Orville and Nettie Kellogg. She was raised in the Hobart area and attended school in Taylor and Neukirchen, which was between Issaquah and Hobart. On Jan. 6, 1929, she married icon Frank Hart in Tacoma. The family moved to Monohan, where she lived in the early 1960s. She then moved to Issaquah.In her leisure time she enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, raising Africian Violets, canning, and taking care of people needing help. She was preceded in death by a son, Jim Hart, in 1972.

Lee Root
Lee Root, 81, of Issaquah, died on June 1, 2000, at Overlake Hospital Medical Center. A funeral service was held on June 5 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Burial followed at the Hillside Cemetery. Mr. Root was born icon on Feb. 4, 1919, in Russia. When he was a young man the family immigrated to the United States and settled in West Seattle. Mr. Root graduated from West Seattle High School. In 1985 he moved to Redmond with his wife, Rose, who preceded him in death in 1988. At the time of his death Mr. Root was a production manager for Blaser Die Casting in Seattle. He was a two-time champion for Pacific Rim International Model Engineering Society. Mr. Root was a member of the Burien Elks and several other organizations, and he also was associated with Chrysler, General Motors and Ford Motor companies as a historian and technical model builder. In his leisure time Mr. Root enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling. Survivors include daughters Rhetta Hopfauf of Issaquah and Jean Winthrop of Seattle; son Al Root of Seattle; sister Ariadne Morris of Seattle; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Calvert Moulton Mattern
Calvert Moulton Mattern of Black Diamond died on June 8, 2000 at Valley Medical Center in Renton. He was 81. Interment is at Mountain View Cemetery icon in Auburn. At his request, no services were held. Mr. Mattern was born icon on April 19, 1908, in Portland, Ore. He was married icon to June E. Middeke on Aug. 24, 1946, in Seattle. Mr. Mattern was employed as an engineer at The Boeing Co. for 37 years, retiring in 1981. In his leisure time he enjoy camping with his family, picking wild berries, swimming in mountain lakes and skiing. He is survived by his wife of Black Diamond; son John Calvert Mattern of Auburn; daughter Jill Marie and her husband Jerry Mays of Issaquah; and two grandsons. Dixie G. Forney
Dixie G. Forney, 67, died June 13 in Issaquah. At her request no services will be held. Mrs. Forney was born icon on Dec. 21, 1932, in Riverton Heights, the daughter of Curtis and Marjorie Skinner. She was raised on the Eastside and attended one year of business school in motel and hotel management and computer training. After living in California for a few years she returned to Issaquah in 1994 to work as a care giver at Dees Adult Family Home. Mrs. Forney was a former resident of Hutchison House and a longtime member of the Issaquah Eagles. Mrs. Forney is survived by her son, William Lee Harlan; and a brother, Toliver Skinner of Costa Mesa, Calif. Arrangements are by Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home.

Barbara F. Laine
Barbara F. Laine, 55 of Fall City, died June 18 at University Hospital in Seattle. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. June 23 at Flintofts Issaquah Funeral Home. A reception will follow at the Issaquah Elks. Mrs. Laine was born icon on May 21, 1945, in San Angelo, Texas, the daughter of Sidney and Alyne Jones. She was raised in Texas and graduated from high School in Dreau, France. She married icon Frank E. Laine on June 13, 1964, in San Angelo. They moved to Issaquah in 1964 and then to Fall City in 1974. She was a senior claim representative for Farmers Insurance Group of Companies. She was a member of Emblem Club of the Issaquah Elks and the Issaquah Guild of Childrens Hospital, and volunteered for the March of Dimes. Survivors include her husband of Fall City; a brother, Tommy Jones,of Orlando, Fla.; and a sister, Kay Billingsley of San Antonio, Texas. Samantha E. Lehr
A gathering of family friends in memory of Samantha E. Lehr, 36, of Issaquah, will be at noon on June 24, 2000 at her mother's home in Snohomish. Ms. Lehr died at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue on June 18. Ms. Lehr was born icon on May 12, 1964, in Lodi, Calif., the daughter of Wilbur and Shirley Lehr. She was raised in Lodi where she graduated from Tokay High School. In the fall of 1992 she moved to Washington and later to Issaquah. Ms. Lehr worked as a nurses aid at Mt. Si Transitional Health Center in North Bend for a few years, and prior to her death she was working as a home health care aid. In her leisure time she enjoyed doing needle point, gardening and was an avid reader. Ms. Lehr is survived by her mother and step-father, Shirley and Randy Schmit of Snohomish; a brother, William Schmit of Lodi, Calif.; a sister, Renee Ferreira of Bothell; and longtime companion Michael Geels of Issaquah. John "Jack" W. Reid
John "Jack" W. Reid, 79, of Issaquah, died on June 13, 2000, in Bellevue. A funeral service was held on June 16, 2000, at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Burial with military honors followed at Tahoma National Cemetery icon in Kent. Mr. Reid was born icon on May 25, 1921 in Boynton, Florida, the son of John and Beatrice Reid. He married icon Eva G. Tanner April 19, 1944, in Seattle. He served with the United States Army and Navy from 1940 to 1945. The family moved to Issaquah in 1963. Mr. Reid was a member of the 41st Infantry Division Association, Seattle Chapter and the Issaquah Elks. He was a retired Colonel and life member of the Army Reserve National Guard Officers Association. He retired from Boeing in 1986. Survivors include his wife of Issaquah; daughters Terry Landis of Pacific; Sharon Benoit of Moss Beach, Calif., Jackie Wallace of Charlotte, N.C. and Louise Bursey, of Auburn; brother Dave Reid of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; sisters Frances Cole of Coeur D Alene, Idaho, Camille Simon of Silverdale, Mary Folden of Missoula, Mont. and Delores Reid of Escondido, Calif.; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Shelly E. Soltis
A memorial service for Shelly E. Soltis, 40, formerly of North Bend, will be at 11 a.m. on June 24, 2000 at Flintofts Issaquah Funeral Home. She died on June 16 in Ocala, Fla., after a long illness. Ms. Soltis was born icon on Oct. 15, 1959, in Glendale, Calif. She moved with her family in 1972 to the Snoqualmie Valley, where she attended school in Carnation and North Bend. She moved to Florida in 1985. She was preceded in death by her father, George Hill,in 1993. Survivors include her mother, Rose E. Hill of Pahrump, Nev.; three sisters, Diane Link of Spokane, Cheri Schmitt of Port Angeles and Sharon Day of Spokane; and four brothers, Steve Robinson of Duvall, Terry Hill of North Bend, Randy Hill of Kirkland and Mort Hill of Columbia Falls, Mont. Agnes M. Beers
Agnes M. Beers, 86, of Seattle, died on July 4, 2000, at home following a long battle with Parkinsons Disease. Mrs. Beers, the daughter of Ole Haglund and Maria Liljemark Haglund, was born icon on Jan. 20, 1914, in Sweden. She immigrated with her family to America in 1914, settling in Preston. She attended school in Preston and graduated from Issaquah High School in 1932. Following graduation she married icon her high school sweetheart, George L. Beers, who preceded her in death in 1989. The couple lived in the West Seattle area for many years before moving to the Burien area. They returned to west Seattle in 1987. Mrs. Beers was active in Eastern Star, Amaranth, White Shrine and Rainbow Girls. She was a charter member of Crown Chapter No. 249, OES, and served as Worthy Matron in 1969, initiating the custom of the Traveling Jewel. She represented Crown Chapter as a grand officer in 1970 and 1972, served on the Rainbow Board for Southgate and West Seattle Assemblies, and received the Grand Cross of Colors in the International Order of Rainbow. Mrs. Beers was an active member of the Boulevard Park Presbyterian Church, serving as deaconess, Sunday school teacher, organist and youth leader. She was involved with her daughters in Girl Scouts and school activities. Her family always came first. In the last few years, due to failing health, Mrs. Beers was house bound, but she continued to enjoy her roses and her family. She is survived by two daughters, Mona Valley and husband Carl of West Seattle and Marla Osinski and husband Patrick of Chatham, N.J.; brother Harold Haglund and wife Cecelia of Federal Way; grandson Ken Holland and wife Jennie; and two great grandsons. Elsie M. Engeset
Elsie M. Engeset, 88, of Seattle, formerly of Issaquah and Vashon Island, died Friday, June 30, 2000. A memorial service was held July 6 at Providence Mount St. Vincent Nursing Center in Seattle. Mrs. Engeset was born icon on Nov. 17, 1911 in Seattle, the daughter of Frank and Julia Wicklund. She was raised in Seattle where she graduated from high school and business college. On June 12, 1937, she married icon John Carlson. They made their home in Enumclaw where they raised their family. Mrs. Carlson was employed as an office secretary for Gunderson Furniture. Following her husband's retirement they built a home on Vashon Island. In 1984, she married icon Eric Engeset, also of Vashon Island. The couple were members of Vashon Lutheran Church. They moved to Providence Point on Feb. 21, 1985, and later became members of Sammamish Hills Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by Mr. Carlson in 1980 and by Mr. Engeset in 1998. Mrs. Engeset is survived by son Gary Carlson of Vashon Island; daughter Julie Winecoff of Marysville; brothers Gunnar Wicklund of Bainbridge Island and Carl Wicklund of Seattle; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Earl Thomas Gibson
Earl Thomas Gibson, 88, died July 2, 2000, after a short illness. A memorial service was held July 7 at University Presbyterian Church in Seattle. Mr. Gibson, a descendent of the Gibson family that settled in Issaquah in the 1880s, was born icon on Aug. 3, 1911, in Seattle. He lived in Issaquah in the early 1920s on his grandfather's farm. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1930 and the University of Washington in 1934. Mr. Gibson served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He retired with the rank of commander. Mr. Gibson was a partner in Gibson-Soots, a men's clothing business on the site now occupied by Bellevue Square. He was an avid traveler and has visited all of the continents and nearly every country in the world. He was a member of the University Presbyterian Church, the Nile Temple and past president of the Kiwanis Club in Seattle. He was preceded in death by his son, Richard. John Kauzlarich
John Kauzlarich, 86, of Renton, died on July 3, 2000, in Kent. A rosary was held July 6 at Faull-Stokes Mortuary. A funeral mass was held July 7 at St. Anthony Catholic Church with a burial following at Greenwood Memorial Park. Mr. Kauzlarich was born icon on May 29, 1914, in Roslyn. He worked as a mechanic until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Croatian Fraternal Union of America Lodge. In his leisure hours, Mr. Kauzlarich enjoyed smiling and making friends. He also liked hunting, fishing, golfing and watching sports, especially baseball. Survivors include sons David Kauzlarich, Vince Kauzlarich and Larry Kauzlarich of Kent, John Kauzlarich of Seattle, Steve Kauzlarich of Duvall, and Tom Kauzlarich of Renton; daughters Judy Jarvis and Chris Troy of Renton, Barbara Trube of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Mary Laliberte of Kent; sister Olga Arnone of Renton; 31 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. John Kelly
A memorial service for John Kelly, 85, of Issaquah, will be at 2 p.m. July 16 at Kelly Ranch in Issaquah. An Irish wake follows from 2:30-8 p.m. Mr. Kelly died peacefully at home on July 9, 2000, from a stroke. He was born icon on Nov. 27, 1914, in Lisbon, Ireland. He arrived in the United States in 1924 at 10 years old. He married icon Violet O. Fredrickson on March 15, 1945, in Clarkston. The family lived in West Seattle, where he worked as a bread salesman for Golden Rule and Langendorf/Wonderbread. In 1957, the family moved to four acres in Issaquah adjacent to Sunset Elementary School. This is the original location of Kelly Ranch, started in 1960. In 1970, the ranch was moved to its present location on Renton- Issaquah Road. Mr. Kelly's favorite pasttime was creating lasting friendships with people who came from all over the world to visit the Kelly Ranch. He officially retired in 1990 at age 75. At age 74, he took a trip to Ireland to visit his old family home and to look up old friends. In his leisure time he enjoyed his morning coffee with the boys at Issaquah Cafe, and lunch - 11:30 a.m. sharp - was spent at his favorite restaurant where he enjoyed socializing. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur in 1978 and Martin in 1985. Mr. Kelly is survived by his wife; daughters Colleen Kelly Kronk of West Seattle, Nancy Kelly of Bellevue and Teresa Bradley of Issaquah; sons Danny Kelly of Snoqualmie Pass and David Kelly of Issaquah; eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Lucille A. Erickson
Lucille A. Erickson, 95, of Issaquah, died on July 21, 2000, at the Issaquah Care Center from heart disease. A funeral service was July 25 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Private entombment was at Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Bellevue. Mrs. Erickson was born icon on May 12, 1905 in Glenwood, Minn., the daughter of Herman and Jeannette Berry. She was raised in Glenwood and graduated from Glenwood High School. She graduated from Mankato Teachers College. She started her teaching career in 1929 in a one-room school house in Glenwood. She married icon Gaehart Erickson on July 1, 1929, in Windom, Minn. She continued teaching in Windom until 1942, when the family moved to Seattle. The family moved to West Lake Sammamish in 1943 and she started teaching in Medina in 1944. She taught at Clyde Hill until 1970, when she retired. Mrs. Erickson enjoyed singing in church choirs both in Minnesota and Bellevue, gardening, reading and spending time with her family. Survivors include son Rodney Erickson, of Issaquah; sister Dora Bowden of Lodi Calif.; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Georganna P. Green
Georganna P. Green, 70, of Bellevue, died on July 12, 2000, at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center in Kirkland. A memorial service was July 15 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Ms. Green was born icon on Nov. 14, 1929, in Los Angeles, Calif., the daughter of Phillip and Ella Green. She was raised in Pasadena and Santa Barbara, Calif. She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of New Mexico. In 1969, Ms. Green moved to the Bellevue area, where she raised her four children. In her leisure time Ms. Green enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, attending the ballet and other fine-art programs. She also enjoyed playing bingo and visiting casinos. Survivors include daughter Susan Roselle of North Bend; sons Mark Fleisch of Redmond, David Fleisch of Kirkland and Scott Fleisch of Issaquah; brother Tom Green of Del Mar, Calif.; and five grandchildren. Marlene P. Lazzeri
Marlene P. Lazzeri, 46, of Issaquah, died on July 13, 2000, at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland following a long bout with cancer. A celebration of her life was July 17 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Ms. Lazzeri was born icon on June 14, 1954, in Stockton, Calif., the daughter of Albert and Jacqueline Lazzeri. In 1964 her family moved to Gilroy, Calif., where she continued her schooling and graduated from Gilroy High School. She married icon Joseph Rodney Mueller in Morgan, Calif. They settled in Stockton. In 1980, she moved to San Jose and later to Grass Valley where she worked in sales for several different service-oriented businesses. She moved to Issaquah in 1993 and worked in computer sales. In her leisure hours Ms. Lazzeri enjoyed home decorating, running, biking, hiking and weight lifting. She also enjoyed travel and spending time with her family. Survivors include her parents of San Jose, Calif.; son Joshua Mueller of Bothell; daughter Jennifer Mueller of Issaquah; brother Craig Lazzeri of Auburn; and sister Charmaine Pokriots of San Jose, Calif. Ruth H. Sweney
Ruth H. Sweney, 89, of Issaquah, died on July 22, 2000, at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue. At her request no services were held. She was born icon on Dec. 10, 1910, in Lorain, Ohio, the daughter of J.H. and Flossie Hogan. She was raised and attended school in the Midwest. She married icon Fred Sweney on June 13, 1937, in Wellington, Ohio. In the early 1950's she and her family moved to Sarasota, Fla., where they settled and raised their family. She was a homemaker while her husband worked as a noted wildlife artist and teacher at the Ringling School of Art. In 1980 they moved to Issaquah. She was preceeded in death by her husband in 1996. She is survived by son Bill Sweney of Duvall; granddaughter Shawna Sweney of Pompano Beach, Fla.; and grandson Greg Sweney of Seattle. Arrangements are by Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home.

Keith Floyd Warden, 44, died on July 15, 2000, in Ketchikan, Alaska. A memorial service was held on July 20 in Ketchikan. Mr. Warden was born icon on Nov. 17, 1955, in Seattle and grew up in Issaquah. A 1974 Issaquah High School graduate, he was an all-state wrestling champion and earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Washington, where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Mr. Warden moved to Alaska in the late 1980s. He logged in the southeast, crabbed in the Bering Sea, fished commercially, and finally settled in Ketchikan and became a carpenter. He was a general contractor and co-owner of Alaska Acoustical with his longtime friend, Brad Holm. In his leisure hours, Mr. Warden enjoyed martial arts and spending time with his family and friends. He was sensei of the Ketchikan Judo Club and assisted teaching judo to the Kayhi Wrestling Team. Survivors include his longtime partner Dorene Demmert; sons Brandon and Colton Warden; stepson Chris of Alaska; stepdaughter Vanessa of Alaska; parents Herman and LaNell Warden; and grandmother Dolly Firestone.
