Hjormund Kummen
Hjormund Kummen, 84, of Issaquah died on July 28 [2000] at Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue. A memorial service for Mr. Kummen will be at 2 p.m., Aug. 3, 2000, at the Eastridge Christian Assembly, 5025 Issaquah-Pine Lake Rd. S.E. He was born icon Feb. 6, 1916, in Nordberg, Gudbransdal, Norway, the son of Gregor and Ragna Kummen. He was raised and attended school in Norway. In 1938, he graduated from the Swedish Technical School with a degree in mechanical engineering. Following college he joined the Royal Norwegian Air Force as a Sergeant Mechanic. During the German occupation of Norway, Mr. Kummen was captured twice and escaped each time; his second escape lead him through Russia to Canada. In Canada he was stationed in Toronto where Lt. Kummen trained as a pilot. While there, he also met his future bride, Charlotte Robinson. On March 11, 1944, they were married icon in Toronto. In 1946, they returned to Norway. Two years later, they returned to Canada, where he took a position with the Canadian Department of Defense. In 1959, the family moved to Issaquah, where they settled on Cougar Mountain. Mr. Kummen worked for Pacific Car and Foundry, retiring in 1982 as a design engineer. In his leisure time he enjoyed travel, especially to Norway, reading, and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife of Issaquah; son Jon Kummen of Fall City; daughters Rondi Martin of Pasadena, Calif., and Nancy Kummen of Issaquah; sisters Ronaug and Gudrun of Norway; and one grandson, Christopher Kummen. Holly Marie McDougal, 18, of Issaquah, died on Aug. 7, 2000, near Preston, from injuries sustained in an auto accident. A funeral service was held on Aug. 12 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Miss McDougal was born icon on June 6, 1982, in Minneapolis, Minn. At the age of 6, she and her family moved to Renton. In 1992 they moved to Issaquah where she attended Issaquah High School and worked for several local businesses. Survivors include her parents Rick and Barbara Kuecker of Issaquah; brothers Steve McDougal of Minneapolis, Minn., and David and Robert McDougal of Issaquah; and numerous other family members. Melvin G. Swanson
Melvin G. Swanson, 78, of Issaquah, died on August 6, 2000, at Valley Medical Center in Renton. A graveside committal service with military honors was held on Aug. 10 at the Maple Valley-Hobart Cemetery. Mr. Swanson was born icon on Feb. 13, 1922, in Hobart, the son of John and Emma Swanson. He was raised in Hobart and graduated from Tahoma High School in 1940. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army-Air Corp. On May 28, 1948, he married icon Ilene Malmassari in Seattle. They moved to Issaquah (Lake Sammamish) in 1948. During the Korean Conflict he was a radio operator in the Merchant Marine. Mr. Swanson was a truck driver for Graystone in Seattle, Kent and Bellevue. He was Post Commander for Albert Larson Post #3436 VFW in Issaquah. Survivors include his wife of Issaquah; son Jim Swanson of Issaquah; daughter Carol Benn of Spanaway; five grandsons; and one nephew. He was preceded in death by son Robert Swanson in 1997. Lenora June Wurtz, 74, of Issaquah, died on July 31, 2000, of heart failure. A memorial service will be held on Sept. 2 at the lower pavilion at CCC Lake in Perry, Okla. In case of inclement weather the service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Perry. There will be a private internment at Grace Hill Cemetery., Mrs. Wurtz was born icon on April 11, 1926, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the daughter of Horace and Harriet Tefteller. She graduated from Perry HIgh School in 1943 where she was football queen and a member of the school marching band. Mrs. Wurtz attended A&M University. She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church and volunteered in numerous youth groups. Survivors include daughter Sandra Sue Wurtz of Alexandria, Va.; son William Wurtz of Issaquah; uncle Earl Van Bebber of Tracy, Calif.; numerous cousins; and her former husband of Joplin, Mo. Paul Lee Citron
Paul Lee Citron, 55, formerly of Issaquah, died on Aug. 14, 2000, at his home in Ellisforde. A private family memorial service was conducted. Mr. Citron was born icon on Nov. 28, 1944, in Sharon, N.D. He was raised in Seattle, and moved to Issaquah to raise his family. Eventually he moved to Ellisforde to share his retirement dream of orchard ranching with his wife, Patricia. Mr. Citron was preceded in death by his father. Survivors include his wife; mother Myrtle Rose Citron; sister Midge Hanson; children Jon, Andy, Eric, Christine, James and Sean; and seven grandchildren.

Grace Wills Gunning
Grace Wills Gunning, 83, of Bellevue, died on Aug. 18, 2000 at the Issaquah Care Center. At her request no services will be held. Mrs. Gunning was born icon on March 16, 1917 in Murphy, N.C., the daughter of Marshall and Grace Bell. She was raised in Murphy and graduated from Murphy High School at the age of 16. She graduated from North Carolina Women's College in Greensboro, N.C., and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She married icon Harvey Dade Gunning on Sept. 1, 1937 in Murphy. Her family remembers that she most enjoyed homemaking, entertaining, reading and the opera. She moved to Kirkland in 1978 and to Bellevue in 1988. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983. She is survived by daughters Mary W. Wacker of Issaquah and Sarah Gunning Moser of Bellevue; son Dade Gunning of Corpus Christi, Texas; sister Mary Frances Hazelman of Greensboro, N.C.; and two grandchildren. Debra K. Harkey, 47, of Issaquah, died of pneumonia on Aug. 17, 2000, at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center in Kirkland. Vernon Lawrence Paulson Vernon Lawrence Paulson, 83, of Seattle, died on Aug. 17, 2000, at Providence Mt. St. Vincent in Seattle. An open house will be held at the family home from 2-6 p.m. Aug. 26. Mr. Paulson was born icon on June 19, 191, in Edgecomb. He was a veteran of World War II, and went on to work for the U.S. Postal Service in West Seattle until his retirement in 1975. He and his wife, Edna, were married icon for 54 years. Mr. Paulson was a member of the Ark Masonic Lodge No. 126 F&AM for 58 years. He also was a Shriner. In his leisure hours, Mr. Paulson enjoyed fishing, motor-homing, gardening and relaxing at Lake Limerick with his family. Mr. Paulson was preceded in death by his son, Greg. Eleanor A. Stangler
Eleanor A. Stangler, 64, of Shelton, formerly of North Bend, died on Aug. 13, 2000. A memorial mass was Aug. 17 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Issaquah. Mrs. Stangler was born icon on March 15, 1936 in LaMoure, N. D., the daughter of Lewis and Hazel Maddocks. She was raised in Lisbon, N.D., where she graduated from high school. She also attended Valley City Teachers College. She married icon David W. Stangler on Nov. 19, 1957, in Lisbon. Mrs. Stangler worked in several occupations, her last being a caregiver. In her leisure hours, she enjoyed cooking, baking and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on June 27, 1997. John W. Ward
John W. Ward, 51, of Issaquah, died on Aug. 16, 2000, at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center in Kirkland. At his request, no services were held. Mr. Ward was born icon on May 26, 1949 in Issaquah, the son of Vaughn and Phyllis Ward. He was raised in Issaquah and graduated from Issaquah High School in 1967. He became employed by Pacific Northwest Bell and retired in 1999 following 30 years of service. He married icon Vicki Lynn Rowe in Bellevue in 1988. They made their home in Issaquah. Mr. Ward enjoyed hunting, fishing and making spaghetti for the trips. He was preceded in death his mother, Phyllis, in 1999. Adeline M. Donaldson
Adeline M. Donaldson of Issaquah, died on Aug. 25, 2000 at The Care Center at Kelsey Creek. She was 91. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be at 6 p.m. Sept. 10. She was raised near Princeton, where she attended schools. Prior to moving to Issaquah in 1957 she resided in California for 20 years. Mrs. Donaldson worked for Clampitts Cleaners in Issaquah and the Clothes Rack Cleaners in Bellevue. In her leisure time she enjoyed fishing, crocheting, gardening and yard work. She was a member of TOPS. Mrs. Donaldson is survived by one son, Joseph J. Carlson of Sparta, Tenn.; sisters Marjorie Snow of Jackson, Minn., Verna Ady of Zimmerman, Minn., and Ida Mae Haugen of Minneapolis, Minn.; one grandson, two granddaughters and numerous great-grandchildren. Jeanne M. LaCasse
Jeanne M. LaCasse, 51, of Issaquah, died on Aug. 22, 2000 at home. A memorial service was held on Aug. 25 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Miss LaCasse was born icon on Feb. 11, 1949 in Missoula, Mont., the daughter of Pierre and Ruth LaCasse. She was raised in Spokane and moved to Issaquah in 1988. Rex P. Seil
Rex P. Seil, 77, of Maple Valley, passed away suddenly in Conconully, Wash., while on a fishing trip. Mr. Seil was born icon on Sept. 5, 1922 in a log cabin on Tiger Mountain near Issaquah, the son of Edward and Josephine Seil. He was raised in Issaquah and graduated from Issaquah High School. He was known as the "sparkplug" of the high school football team. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy. On April 12, 1946 he married icon Joyce M. Booren in Issaquah. Mr. Seil served as a chairman of the Issaquah Labor Day Parades. He also served as town marshall of Issaquah in the late 1940's. He retired from King County Department of Public Works as a foreman in 1984. The family lived in Issaquah until 1989. In his leisure time he enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, and traveling. Survivors include his wife Joyce; son Edward Seil of Fall City; daughter Nancy Seil of Woodinville; three brothers, Walt and Jack Seil, both of Issaquah, and Chet Seil of Hoquiam; two sisters, Keturah Ward of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Mabel Junevitch of Hobart; and three grandchildren. Caroline L. Shope, 96, of Bellevue, died on Aug. 25, 2000, in Bellevue. Private family services were held. Mrs. Shope was born icon on June 27, 1904, in Minot, N. D., the daughter of Charles and Katherine Lehnert. When she was very young the family moved to Corvallis, Ore., where she was raised and attended schools. She married icon Herman A. Shope in 1923 in Corvallis. They made their home in Oregon. Mrs. Shope worked as a book binder first starting in her family's business and later worked for several book binding firms including the University of California and the University of Washington. She retired to Washington to be near her family. In her leisure hours Mrs. Shope was an avid reader, and she enjoyed gardening, sewing and crotcheting. Albert Starrett
Mr. Albert Starrett, 68, of Issaquah, died Aug. 28, 2000 at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. A gathering of family and friends was held on Sept. 2. Mr. Starrett was born icon on Sept. 30, 1931 in Seattle, the son of Albert and Faith Starrett. He was raised in Seattle, where he graduated from high school. Mr. Starrett served in the U.S. Air Force. He owned and operated Al Starrett Painting in Bellevue and also was a wallpaper hanger. He was a resident of Bellevue for many years prior to moving to Issaquah in 1990. In his leisure time Mr. Starrett enjoyed fishing and boating. Marjorie M. Arnold
Marjorie M. Arnold, 62, died on Aug. 12, 2000, at a care center in Las Vegas. Graveside services were held at Palm Valley View Memorial Park in Las Vegas. She was born icon on Nov. 3, 1937, in Medhow. A retired hairdresser, she was a two-year resident of Las Vegas and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In her leisure hours Mrs. Arnold enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint, camping, and canning fruits and vegetables. Survivors include daughters S. Renee Hoban and Ruth Adams, both of Las Vegas; son Jimmy Warden of Washington; mother and stepfather Lorraine Graver-Davidson and Forest Davidson of Issaquah; sisters Pauline James and Alice Donnet, both of Seattle; brothers Charles Graver of Ellensburg, and Walter Graver of Spokane; and five grandchildren. Robert D. Besecker Sr.
Robert D. Besecker Sr., 74, of Issaquah, died on Sept. 1, 2000, at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. A memorial service was held on Sept. 6 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Mr. Besecker was born icon on Sept. 23, 1925, in Laura, Ohio, the son of Lester and Treva Besecker. He was raised in Ainsworth Hot Springs, British Columbia, and graduated from Kaslo High School and Gonzaga University in Spokane. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He moved to Issaquah in 1960. Mr. Besecker retired from Boeing Co. in 1989 as an engineer after 33 years of service. In his leisure hours Mr. Besecker enjoyed playing bridge at the Renton Senior Center, traveling and spending time with his family. Survivors include sons Dana Besecker of Bellevue, Karl Besecker of Issaquah, Andrew Besecker of Deland, Fla.; daughter Pamela Reibnegger of Berwick, Australia; brother Dana Besecker of Spokane; and seven grandchildren. Former Issaquah resident Charlotte Gerber, 80, of Roseville, Calif., died on Aug. 28, 2000. A memorial service will be held on Sept. 15 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. Private inturnment was held at the Lower Hillside Cemetery. Ms. Gerber was born icon on Aug. 26, 1920, in Portland, Ore., the daughter of William and Violet Gerber. She was raised in Portland where she graduated from high school. For many years she was employed by Greenbergs and Sons as a receptionist in San Francisco. Later she worked for the federal government as a clerk. Ms. Gerber was known to be a person who thoroughly enjoyed cleaning her home. Survivors include daughters Patricia "Hartley" Graham of Bellevue, formerly of Issaquah, and Nancy Jennings of Roseville; son William Johnston of Roseville; seven granchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Margaret A. Hanson
Margaret A. Hanson, 85, of Issaquah died on Sept. 1, 2000, at Mount Si Transitional Care Center in North Bend. At her request no services will be held. Fred Hassler, 56, of Redmond, died on Sept. 4, 2000. Services were held on Sept. 10. Mr. Hassler was born icon on Aug. 17, 1944, in Phoenix, Ariz. He began teaching in the Issaquah School District in 1971. He most recently taught at Pine Lake Middle School. Survivors include his wife, Ann Killian of Redmond; daughters Cara and Marie Hassler of Redmond; mother Nell Hassler of California; and brother Jim Hassler of California. Hildred Jones, 85, of Issaquah, died on Aug. 29, 2000, at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. At her request there were no services. Mrs. Jones was born icon on Aug. 27, 1915, in Seattle to Nils Olson and Hildi Karlin Olson. She graduated from West Seattle High School in 1935. She married icon Elmer Jones on March 23, 1940, in Seattle. They moved from Seattle to the East Lake Sammamish area in 1961. On March 23, 2000, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. In her leisure hours, Mrs. Jones was an avid golfer and an artist in watercolor and oil painting. Survivors include her husband of Issaquah; brother Elmer Olson of Seattle; one niece and two nephews. Verne McCullough
Verne McCullough, 58, of Issaquah, died Sept. 3, 2000, at his home from an accident. Mr. McCullough was born icon on April 4, 1942, in Flint, Mich., the son of Vernon and Henrietta McCullough. He was raised in Flint and graduated from Southwestern High School and Michigan State University. He married icon Mary M. Howard, his high school sweetheart, on July 21, 1962, in Flint. He moved to Bellevue in 1967, and then to Issaquah in 1988. He was a self employed marketing consultant. He was a member of the Classic Chevy Club and the Seattle Yacht Club. In his leisure hours Mr. McCullough enjoyed working on his classic 1957 Chevrolet, gardening, camping, bicycling, reading, collecting Aladian Oil Lamps, service station and drag racing memorabilia, and spending time with wife and friends. Carl E. Soderstrom
Carl E. Soderstrom, 92, of Issaquah, died on Sept. 4, 2000, at Overlake Hospital in Bellevue. A memorial service was held on Sept. 8 at Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home. A private burial was held at Preston Cemetery. Mr. Soderstrom was born icon on Aug. 29, 1908, in Bow, the son of Edward and Amanda Soderstrom. He was raised in Bow and moved to Issaquah (High Point) in 1922. He married icon Marcia Lee Holmberg on Sept. 18, 1948, in Seattle. During his working career he worked at a turkey ranch in Oregon, The Preston Mill, The Rockwood Corporation in Preston, and then the Issaquah School District from 1965 until his retirement in 1978. In his leisure time he enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with his family. He was an active 72-year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and an active member of Trinity Evangelical Church of Issaquah. Survivors include his wife; son Edward (Ted) Soderstrom of Kootenai, Idaho; daughters Margaret Soderstrom of Issaquah, Linda Lund of La Vista, Neb.,and Jeanne Boyd of Seattle; brother Oscar Soderstrom of Yakima; and seven grandchildren. Frederick D. Wagner, 87, of Issauqah, died on Sept. 1, 2000. A memorial serivce was held on Sept. 8 at the Sammamish Hills Presbyterian Church. Mr. Wagner was born icon on Oct. 27, 1912, in Amarillo, Texas, the son of Henry and Mary Wagner. He was raised in Kansas and graduated from the University of Kansas, a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. During World War II Mr. Wagner served in the Pacific Theater in the Navy, leaving the service as a Lt. Commander. Following the war he moved to Chicago where he met and married icon Florence Peterson. The next 18 years he and his wife lived in La Grange, Ill. with their son David, who was born icon in 1949. Mr. Wagner worked for Argonne National Laboratory as a mechanical engineer. They moved to the Pacific Northwest in 1971 where he did consultant work until his retirement. Following his retirement he and his wife traveled extensively. They were among the first families to move into Providence Point. Mr. Wagner performed volunteer work for Providence Point and Providence Point Kiwanis. He was a member of Sammamish Hills Presbyterian Church Survivors include son David of Honolulu; sister Dorothy Chase of Issaquah; and nephew Bill Chase of Eugene, Ore. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1994. The family suggests remembrances to the Providence Point Kiwanis. Arrangements are by Flintoft's Issaquah Funeral Home.
