Virginia Bennett, 69, of Port Orchard died March 24, 1998, at St. Frances Hospital. She was born icon April 3, 1928, in Portland, Ore. She graduated from Highline High School in 1946. On Nov. 24, 1948, she married icon Calvin Bennett. Survivors include one son, Terry of Olalla; one daughter, Jane Frye of Seattle; her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Cora Wahlgren; and two grandsons, Derick Bennett and Travis Frye. Charles Mundt
Charles Wilfred Mundt, 54, of Bremerton died April 27, 1998, in Bremerton. He was born icon July 12, 1943, in Chippewa Falls, Wis. On Sept. 24, 1979, he married icon Sung Chu Choi in Korea. Mr. Mundt served in the Navy, retiring in 1982 as a chief radioman. Later, he worked as a sales supervisor for Lumberman's. Survivors include his wife; one son, Billy of Bremerton; one daughter, Tina of Bremerton; one brother, John of Brewton, Ala.; one sister, Patricia of Atlanta; and his parents, John and Dorothy Mundt of Auburn, Ala. Maura Pilet
Maura Kay (Marler) Pilet, C.N.M., 36, former Central Kitsap area resident, died April 25, 1998. She was born icon June 1, 1961. Mrs. Pilet was a veteran of the Air Force Nurse Corps. Oscar Wilcox
Oscar "Willie" Wilcox Jr., 67, of Port Orchard died April 28, 1998, in Bremerton. He was born icon July 12, 1930, in Kinder, La. On Dec. 6, 1997, he married icon Diann Wilcox in Bremerton. Mr. Wilcox served in the Navy from 1951 until his retirement in 1972, working as an aircraft mechanic. He is survived by his wife. There will be no services. Mrs. LeClair worked as town clerk for Riverside and a sales clerk at a western apparel store. Vera Kincaid
Vera JoAnn Kincaid, 89, of Bremerton died April 28, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She was born icon Jan. 15, 1909, in Wade, Okla. In 1951, she married icon Charles R. Nichols in Seattle. Ms. Kincaid worked as a chef in the food service industry for over 50 years. She is survived by one daughter, Charlotte Puccia of Bremerton; four sisters, Ruby Robinson of Oklahoma and Farrah Haddock, Audine Artz and Nowetta Miller, all of Texas; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. On April 23, 1949, he married icon Helen McPherson in Seattle. Mr. McPherson served in the Navy from 1942 to 1946. Later, he worked as a realator for By the Bay Realty. Owen Buchanan
Owen "Buck" Buchanan, 56, of Gig Harbor died April 27, 1998, at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He was born icon Aug. 30, 1941, in Tacoma. He graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma, attended Pacific Lutheran University, and graduated from the University of Washington. On Oct. 3, 1987, he married icon Marcia Buchanan in Tacoma. Mr. Buchanan served in the National Guard. He was also a businessman at Import City in Bremerton from 1975 to 1988. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Bradi Buchanan of Great Falls, Mont.; one stepson, Donivan Blankenbaker of Bremerton; one stepdaughter, Laura Berg of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Barbara Fay of Sunnyvale, Calif.; his mother, Hazel Buchanan of Tacoma; and three grandchildren. Allan M. Noyes, 72, of Burlington died April 25, 1998, at United General Hospital. He was born icon March 3, 1926, in Framingham, Mass. He graduated from Framingham High School in 1943 and later attended Philadelphia Textile Institute. On Nov. 27, 1946, he married icon Patricia Kowol in Mount Vernon. Mr. Noyes served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946, during World War II. Later, he worked as a nuclear pipefitter for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1975 to 1980, and Trident Refit Facility at Bangor from 1980 until his retirement in 1989. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Karan Dawson of Seattle and Sabra Noyes of Keyport; one sister, Marion "Shirley" Crosby-Greene of Brenham, Texas; and two grandchildren. Arthur Seymour
Arthur "Art" K. Seymour, 77, of Bremerton died April 24, 1998, in Bremerton. He was born icon July 31, 1920, in Toledo, Ore. On April 10, 1942, he married icon Winona Mae Seymour in Elma. Mr. Seymour served in the Army from 1942 to 1945. Later, he worked in construction for Mid Mountain for 30 years until retiring in 1983. He is survived by three daughters, Winona Lynn Hoesche of Belfair, Janet L. LaVigne and Mimi Trueax, both of Bremerton; one brother, Bill of Shelton; two sisters, Molly of Aberdeen and Patsy of Florida; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was a graduate of Chimacum High School, and married icon Jack Dustin on Sept. 14, 1946, in Irondale. She worked as a switchboard operator. Charlie Martin Ormsby, 72, died April 24, 1998, at his home near Colville. Mr. Ormsby, a former Poulsbo resident, served 27 years in the Marine Corps, serving in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Later, he worked as a contract maintenance officer for Seafirst Bank. He graduated from Robert Wesleyan College in North Chili, N.Y. On Aug. 3, 1940, he married icon Alice M. McKay in Rochester, N.Y. Mr. McKay served in the Army during World War II. He also worked as an officer of the Salvation Army, retiring in 1983. He is survived by his wife; five sons, Ronald, David, Erwin, Dale, and Robin; two brothers, Lester and Donald; three sisters, Mildred, Betty, and Loraine; his parents, Lester and Elsie; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Kenneth Van Diest
Kenneth L. Van Diest, 56, of Poulsbo died April 22, 1998, at his home. He was born icon Aug. 26, 1941, in Seattle. He graduated from Eastern Washington University. On Aug. 4, 1990, he married icon Patricia A. Checkvala in Port Gamble. Mr. Van Diest worked at Highline High School in Burien for 31 years. From 1986 to when he retired in 1994, he served as vice principal at Highline High School. He is survived by his wife; one son, Chris of Renton; one brother, Earl Jr. of Port Orchard; one sister, Marilyn Bates of Port Orchard; his mother, Violet M. Van Diest of Tacoma; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. April 26. Myrton Thomas
Myrton Thomas, 87, of Poulsbo died April 21, 1998, at Martha and Mary Nursing Home. He was born icon Oct. 21, 1910, in Bremerton. He attended Silverdale High School. On Jan. 7, 1934, he married icon Gladys Bottem in Silverdale. Mr. Thomas worked as a civilian truck driver for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center at Keyport for 33 years until his retirement in 1965. Survivors include one son, Joel of Poulsbo; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife. At his request, there will be no services. Martin Tarbell
Father Martin W. Tarbell, 74, of Port Orchard died April 20, 1998, at his home. He was born icon May 24, 1923, in Mount Si, Vt. He graduated from Providence Bible Institute in Rhode Island, received his bachelor's degree from Lethbridge University in Canada, and completed his doctoral studies at Great Falls University in Montana. Father Tarbell was ordained Priest of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Church, serving there for 22 years. He is survived by his wife, Joan; three sons, William Paul of Wyoming, David James of Lynnwood, and Robin Roy of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada; three daughters, Peggy E. Ajax of Port Orchard, Ruth E. Henderson and Carrie M. Larson, both of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Josephine, in 1996. Ellen Hickey
Ellen Wendla Johnson Hickey, 82, of Seattle died April 8, 1998, at Greenwood Park Care Center in Seattle. She was born icon March 24, 1916, in Bellingham. She attended North Kitsap High School and graduated from Providence School of Nursing in 1942. Mrs. Hickey worked as a registered nurse, retiring after 40 years as head nurse in delivery at Providence Hospital. Survivors include two cousins, Lillian Hilton of Longview and Sandra Hilton of Arlington; and two nieces-in-law, Faye Nelson of Seattle and Sharon Nelson of Bremerton. Lelah G. Sutherland, 91, of Belfair died April 17, 1998, at Belmont Terrace. She was born icon Sept. 12, 1906, in Sequim. On June 21, 1925, she married icon William B. Sutherland. Mrs. Wieseke worked as an elementary school teacher for many years. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Donelson of Bremerton and her brother, Milo Knudson of Renton. Eugene Rodgers
Eugene James Rodgers, 70, of Poulsbo died April 21, 1998, at Naval Hospital. He was born icon Oct. 3, 1927, in Renova, Pa. He was a high school graduate. On Dec. 31, 1953, he married icon Theresa Ann Devine in Boston. Mr. Rodgers served in the Navy for 20 years, retiring as a Senior Chief's Electrician's Mate in 1966. Later, he worked as an electrical engineer for General Dynamics which he also retired from after 20 years. Rosella Hanrahan
Rosella Hanrahan, 91, of Bainbridge Island died April 22, 1998, in Seattle. She was born icon July 23, 1906, in Ashton, Neb. She was a high school graduate. David Rosencrans
David A. Rosencrans, 41, of Seattle died April 21, 1998, in Seattle. He was born icon Nov. 14, 1956, in Bremerton. He graduated from East High School in 1975 and attended University of Washington. On March 23, 1997, he married icon Ann Kim in Kitsap County. Mr. Rosencrans served in the Peace Corps on Marshall Island from 1984 to 1986. Later, he worked for General Service Administration for 10 years. Donna "Jeanne" Lane-Linton, 66, of Port Orchard died April 19, 1998, at her home. She was born icon Aug. 11, 1931, in Yakima. She graduated from Roy High School. She worked as a financial advisor with Waddel and Reed in Silverdale and as an administrative assistant at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, until retiring in 1991. Later, he worked as a heating and plumbing supervisor at West Point Military Academy until retiring in 1978. Pauline Roberts
Pauline Elizabeth Wiles Roberts, 88, of Port Orchard died April 19, 1998. She was born icon in 1909 in Fultonville, N.Y. In 1929, she married icon Charles Roberts in Potsdam, N.Y. Mrs. Roberts worked as a school librarian at Orchard Heights Elementary School, retiring in 1971. Robert Steinbacher
Robert T. Steinbacher, 80, of Port Orchard died April 22, 1998, at Ridgemont Terrace. He was born icon Oct. 17, 1917, in Fort Benton, Mont. He graduated high school in Fort Benton, Mont. Mr. Steinbacher served in the Air Force during World War II and the Korean War. Later, he worked as an operating engineer in heavy construction until retiring in 1983. He is survived by his son, Steven of Port Orchard; two brothers, Leonard and "Speed", both of Fort Benton, Mont.; one sister, Lillian Nagangast of Fort Benton, Mont.; and one grandchild. Junia Gebhardt
Former Bremerton resident, Junia M. Gebhardt, 77, died April 18, 1998, in Spokane. She was born icon Jan. 30, 1921, in Lewiston Orchards, Idaho. She received her nurse's training at Olympic College. In 1938, she married icon Edward B. Gebhardt. Mrs. Gebhardt worked as a licensed practical nurse at Harrison Memorial Hospital. Survivors include one son, Timothy W. of Hillsdale, Mich.; one daughter, Judith Schoepflin of Spokane; her stepfather, Robert Schafer of Bremerton; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Jack Coonfield
Jack L. Coonfield, 67, of Bremerton died April 20, 1998, at his home. He was born icon May 21, 1930, in Rogers, Ark. On May 12, 1950, he married icon Norma Joan Dahlquist. Mr. Coonfield served in the Marine Corps, retiring as a staff sergeant after 20 years. Later, he worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard Supply Center for 20 years, retiring in 1986. He is survived by his wife; one son, Michael L. of Baltimore; three daughters, Cindy Carroll, Becky Heroux and Dede Christiansen, all of Bremerton; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. James "Bill" Willard Jones, 44, of Port Orchard died April 11, 1998, in Seattle. He was born icon Jan. 21, 1954, in Bremerton. Mr. Jones worked as a shipfitter at Todd Shipyard in Seattle. Richard Stewart
Richard C. Stewart, 76, of Bremerton died April 19, 1998, at his home. He was born icon April 10, 1922, in Hoboken, N.J. On March 25, 1949, he married icon Mary Ellen Hindle in Bremerton. Mr. Stewart served in the Army from 1942 to 1946. He worked as an electrician in Shop 51 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 31 years, retiring in 1973. Survivors include his wife; a son, David of Bremerton; five daughters, Patricia Cleven of Summerland Key, Fla., Cynthia Christensen of Seabeck, Candace Heistand and Michele Stone, both of Bremerton and Teresa Snodgrass of Virginia Beach, Va.; two sisters, Evelyn Wyble and Doris Left; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. April 22 at Crossroads Neighborhood Church, 7555 Old Military Road. Arrangements are under the direction of Tuell-McKee. Harvey Kortman
Harvey H. Kortman, Sr., 75, of Bremerton died April 15, 1998, at his home. He was born icon Oct. 26, 1923, in Humboldt, S.D. He attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago. He married icon his wife, Geraldine, in Montrose, S.D., in 1943. Mr. Kortman served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked in Public Works Shop 07 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for 26 years, retiring in 1988. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Harvey of Alaska, Eugene of Elko, Nev., and William of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two daughters, Kay McNamara of Washington and Bonnie Martin of Peoria, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Alice Card
Alice P. Card, 93, of Oak Harbor died April 16, 1998, at Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville. She was born icon Dec. 20, 1904, in Windemere, British Columbia. She graduated from Coupeville High School and received her teaching certificate from the Bellingham Normal School. She taught at the Cornet Bay School, the Blyn School, the Crosby School and the Chico School. She married icon Victor Card. He preceded her in death in 1950. Mrs. Card worked with her husband in the real estate and insurance businesses Bremerton and Poulsbo until retiring in 1969. Survivors include a nephew, Robert Strong of Oak Harbor; and two grandnieces, Megan and Cynthia Strong. Graveside service will be at 11 a.m. April 21 at Forest Lawn Cemetery icon in Bremerton. William Johnson
William B. Johnson, 89, of Port Orchard died April 18, 1998, in Port Orchard. He was born icon July 7, 1908, in Blackwell, Okla. He was raised in Lamar, Colo. Mr. Johnson worked as a welder at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1940 to 1969. He also owned Brownie's Service Station in Gorst from 1946 to 1951. Survivors include a son, Billie of Port Orchard; five daughters, Fran Paulus and Blanche Radasa, both of Port Orchard, Twyla Johnson and Shirley Paulus, both of Bremerton and Betty Perry of San Diego; 31 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Ellen on Nov. 24, 1997. Visitation will be at Lewis Funeral Chapel from noon to 6 p.m. April 21, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 22, and 9 a.m. to service time on April 23. Verl Gardner
Verl L. Gardner, 68, of Port Orchard died April 16, 1998, in Bremerton. He was born icon March 17, 1930, in Sarcoxie, Mo. Mr. Gardner served in the Marine Corps. He later worked as an engineer for McDonald-Douglas, until retiring in 1986. Edwin Eckley
Edwin D. Eckley, 73, of Bremerton died April 18, 1998, at his home. He was born icon Oct. 7, 1924, in Spokane. He attended Mead High School. On June 18, 1977, he married icon his wife, Gerda Howton-Eckley, in Seattle. Mr. Eckley served in the Army for three years during World War II. He worked in the civil service for more than 20 years, retiring in 1974. Survivors include his wife; three sons, James of Green River, Paul of Silverdale and Jeffrey of Bainbridge Island; a daughter, Carol Bergsma-Reed of Bremerton; a brother, Robert of Spokane; a sister, Sharon of Spokane; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Trauth married icon the former Marian Louise Edwards. He worked as a deepsea diver with the Navy for 22 years, until retiring. Joseph Foster
Joseph Robert Foster, 68, of Sequim died April 17, 1998, at his home. He was born icon Aug. 4, 1929, in Peoria, Ill. He attended school in Enumclaw and finished his education in the Central Kitsap School District. Mr. Foster worked as a brick mason, restaurateur, teamster and retired as a barber in Seattle. Leota Coleman
Leota H. Coleman, 83, of Port Orchard died April 17, 1998, in Port Orchard. She was born icon Aug. 5, 1914, in Dustin, Okla. She earned her master's degree from William and Mary College. She was married icon to her husband, Cliff, for 50 years. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Coleman was a school teacher and counselor for more than 25 years.
